Spring bulb planting One of the Town Council’s initiatives has been to increase the amount of tree planting in the town. Whilst this can be quite restricted it was decided to order a number of spring bulbs – 35,000 in total! During November, at various locations in Wickford – Radwinter Avenue, Nevendon Park and Road, St Peters Terrace and Riverside Walk, volunteers and Councillors have been busily planting bulbs.

On Thursday 23rd November we were joined by school children from Wickford Primary School, Council officers to plant whips provided by County Councillor Malcolm Buckley. More spring bulb planting days were planned for December. Check our website or Facebook page for more information.

We Will Remember Them In November the Town Council contributed to the Remembrance Parade. The parade was organised by the Wickford branch of the Royal British Legion and Basildon Borough Council by affixing a number of ‘Tommys’ to street lamp columns along the High Street and Runwell Road to the entrance at Wickford Memorial Park. Thank you to the Wickford branch for organising this great event for the town.

Essex schools invited to access apprenticeship funding Essex schools can now access Essex County Council’s underspent apprenticeship levy. This can be used to offer new learning and development opportunities to teaching and non-teaching staff members. The apprenticeship levy is paid by employers with a payroll of over £3 million. It covers apprenticeship training costs and can be transferred to a non-levy payer if not used. Using the funding, schools can cover training costs for a range of apprenticeships. These include: Level 5 Operations or Departmental Manager; Level 4 Associate Project Manager; Level 2 Facilities Services Operative; Level 3 IT Solutions Technician; Level 5 Children, Young People and Families Manager; Level 2 Early Years Practitioner.

By offering apprenticeships, Essex schools can expect to attract and retain high-quality talent. These opportunities will also improve the quality of teaching and learning around Essex. Regardless of the apprenticeship, learners will need to spend 20% of their time on purposeful off-the-job training. This could include developing their curriculum knowledge or shadowing another staff member.

Wickford Town Council Christmas Christmas Tree Festival The Town Council has participated in this year’s Christmas Tree Festival at Christ Church Wickford. All the trees on display can be viewed until the New Year.

Remembrance Sunday Poppy Displays Friends of the Wickford Memorial Park Volunteer Group

Over thirty ladies knitted or crocheted the poppies over a ten-month period and produced more than 3000 poppies. These were then tied onto panels of mesh and installed around the Beacon railings and extra panels on the bridge railings. Special thanks go to Margaret Clarke who organised the knitting group.

Continuing articles on the Wickford Memorial Park - this month we will be reporting on our installations of Poppies around the park. The Friends of the Wickford Memorial Park installed a knitted poppy display around the Beacon and plastic poppies around the Remembrance Avenue Trees and the Civilians Another group worked over the Garden Trees. ten-month period making plastic poppies on sticks to go around the Remembrance Ave Trees and around the Civilians Garden Trees.

On the installation Day there were 28 volunteers and 10 children from Wickford Church of England School. They installed crosses and flags supplied by the Royal British Legion and the Wickford War Memorial Association. It was a fantastic display - we found it very emotional. Live music helping improve patients’ recovery Professional musicians playing for hospital patients could help improve their experience in critical care, which is an inspiring idea that has just finished being trialled at Basildon Hospital. String instruments like the lute and violin have been played to over 100 patients to see if they help reduce stress levels and inspire calm through the power of music. Jose Rojas, a Junior Charge Nurse in Critical Care, said: “There’s is evidence that suggests there is improved patient outcomes with music, so we wanted to explore to see this was a ‘sound’ idea ourselves.

Over £135,000 awarded to support public health projects The first organisations to benefit from the Essex County Council Public Health Accelerator Bids (PHAB) small grants programme have been announced. A range of organisations will benefit from a total of £136,366. This will be used to support a variety of projects aimed at improving the physical and mental health of residents across the county. The first successful organisations are: • UTurn4Support: to launch a project combining sporting activity and theoretical mentoring to achieve positive health and social outcomes for young people. • The Art Ministry: to run twice weekly creative sessions over two years for people with mental health issues as well as disadvantaged and disabled residents.

• SEND the Right Message Charity (STRM): to employ a community engagement officer working with residents in Canvey, Benfleet, Hadleigh, Hockley, Ashingdon, Great Wakering, Canewdon and Hullbridge. • Urban Support CIC: to provide a supported learning programme in partnership with local schools, focusing on assisting children with learning difficulties by providing access to physical activities and mentoring. • Over 50s Black Men Forum CIC: to host a Mental Health Seminar in Chelmsford and provide five mental health workshops over a 36-week period for older black men across Essex. • Making It Mindful: to host “dance and dine” sessions for women and families, combined dance and cooking workshops. • Yoga4all Group CIC: to deliver children’s yoga classes in Basildon.

• Let’s Get Out C.I.C: to create the Every Acorn Project Forest School, which will utilise the therapeutic benefits of nature to improve mental wellbeing. • Barnardo’s Essex Child & Family Wellbeing Service: to work with Thurstable School to offer young people suffering anxiety up to age 19 two blocks of six-week yoga sessions. • Ferriers Barn: to provide two fitness classes weekly at Ferriers Barn, a day centre for adults with disabilities, and a weekly sound gong session. • Canvey Island Youth Project (Yellow Door): to employ a sessional counsellor specialising in supporting young people who are neurodiverse or who present as younger than their years. • Ace Music Therapy CIC: to host two inclusive 12-week music workshops for adults and children, as well as a community performance at the end of the programme.

Councillor John Spence, Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Health, Adult Social Care and ICS Integration, said: “There is no one-size-fits-all approach to impactful public health interventions, and I’m really pleased to such a diverse range of projects and organisations benefit from the first PHAB small grants.

“Small grants from the programme are still available, and I would urge other organisations across the county to consider submitting a bid – the money you could receive can make a real difference.” The £7.5 million Public Health Accelerator Bids (PHAB) programme offers organisations the opportunity to bid for funding across two grant funding streams. These are: small grants under £15,000 and major grants over £15,000. Applications for the small grants scheme can be made on a rolling basis. News Around £121m for Essex road maintenance Essex will receive £121 million of Government funding for road repairs and resurfacing between now and 2034. The funding has been reallocated to Local Authorities across England from the HS2 scheme. Essex County Council already receive funding from the Department for Transport (DfT) each year. This includes extra funding announced in March for pothole repairs. The new funding will ensure there is financial support for road repairs until 2034. It will allow Essex Highways to deliver more repairs and resurfacing across Essex. It follows the extra investment we have allocated to highways in this year’s budget of £17.4 million. This is providing works across the county that might not have otherwise taken place. Essex’s allocation includes: £30.6 million existing annual allocation in 2023/24 (highways maintenance block funding, plus Pothole Fund); £7.6 million of additional funding over the next 2 years; £121 million of funding between 2023 and 2034. A new website has been launched to raise awareness of air pollution. EssexAir highlights simple actions people can take to reduce emissions. Essex County Council have created the website on behalf of the Essex Air Quality Consortium. This is a partnership of the 12 district, borough and city councils in Essex, as well as the county council and two unitary councils. The website features: • a dedicated school zone with resources, activities and games • an air pollution map • tips to reduce your exposure to air pollution • advice on changing travel habits to lesson exposure to pollution Air pollution is the largest environmental risk to public health in the UK. It is linked to up to 36,000 deaths each year. It can cause cardiovascular and respiratory diseases and lung cancer. It can also exacerbate existing health conditions, such as asthma. In Essex almost 900 deaths in 2021 were attributable to air pollution. Food recycling in Essex Did you know, roughly 25% of waste thrown away in the general rubbish bin is food? In the United Kingdom alone, statistics have suggested that approximately 270,000 tons of food are thrown away during the festive period, which includes Christmas. This wastage often encompasses leftover food from Christmas dinners, unused ingredients, excess packaging, and items reaching their expiration dates. Not only is this a waste of money but it’s also damaging the environment. This is why Essex County Council are working in partnership with local councils across Essex to increase the amount of food being recycled at the kerbside.

How we’re tackling food recycling rates in Essex If you live in participating areas, you have a wheeled general rubbish bin, and a food waste recycling collection service, you may receive: • a new sticker secured to your wheeled general rubbish bin • a one-off delivery of a roll of compostable food caddy liners • an information leaflet

If your sticker has been posted through your door, please feel free to stick this on your wheeled general rubbish bin. All residents with a wheeled rubbish bin have received the sticker and your rubbish will still be collected. The sticker just acts as a gentle reminder for you and your neighbours to make the most of your food recycling service and help the environment! Over a year-long plan, we have been delivering the same items to all eligible households across Essex in three phases: • Phase one (July - August): Braintree, Colchester & Epping Forest • Phase two (September - October): Harlow, Tendring & Uttlesford • Phase three (January 2024 - February): Basildon, Maldon & Rochford The aim of this project is to reduce the amount of food thrown away in the general rubbish and encourage the use of food recycling caddies and the food recycling collection service. The best thing we can do with our food is enjoy it. If it can’t be eaten and enjoyed, then it should be recycled. Don’t forget that reducing the food you throw away can save you up to £60 a month!

Why you should recycle your food When food is sent to landfill, it doesn’t just safely breakdown. Instead, it lets off harmful greenhouse gases which contribute to climate change.

It’s amazing to think that recycling just six tea bags will generate enough energy to boil a kettle to make another cuppa! Disposing of food in the general rubbish is also costly. In fact, it’s costing Essex taxpayers £9 million a year to dispose of! By recycling food, you will be helping to save money that could be spent on other essential services.

To find out more information about your food recycling service, please visit the Basildon Borough Council website. You will be able to find out more information including what can and cannot be put in your caddy, and what time to present your food recycling for collection. You will also be able to order a replacement caddy if yours has been lost or broken.

What happens to the food recycled by Essex residents? In Essex, most food recycling is collected by your local waste and recycling crews and taken to local processing plants. Anything that is not food, such as caddy liner bags or packaging, is then separated from the load.

Essex praised by climate change expert The Essex County Council third bi-annual climate summit took place recently. The summit focused on how to improve nature and build climate resilience in Essex. The aim was to support collaboration between local and national experts. During the event, several climate change experts were welcomed to deliver key-note speeches. The council already working to improvethe natural world in the county. Work is ongoing through the Essex County Council climate focus area and local nature recovery strategy. The Essex Forest Initiative has also seen more than 240,000 new trees planted in Essex. There are plans to plant another 100,000 trees by 2025. Chair of Natural England, Tony Juniper CBE, spoke at the event. He praised leaders in Essex for their proactive approach to improving nature. He said: “I’m hugely inspired by the leadership being shown in Essex.” Among the other experts who attended the summit was Rt. Hon. Lord Deben, former chair of the Climate Change Committee and Dr Simon Lyster, Chair of the Essex Local Nature Partnership. Dr Lyster chaired a panel

discussion exploring nature recovery, regeneration and resilience in the county. Councillor Peter Schwier, Essex County Council’s Climate Czar and Cabinet Member for Environment, Waste Reduction and Recycling, said: “I’m delighted that we have been able to host another successful climate summit and pleased the work we are doing in Essex has been recognised.” These summits allow us to bring together experts from across the nation to collaborate and share ideas on how Essex can mitigate the effects of climate change. Official opening of new Aldi store Mark Francois officially opens expanded Aldi supermarket in Wickford. Rayleigh and Wickford MP, Mark Francois, officially opened the newly refurbished and expanded Aldi store in Wickford, which had been previously closed for some 9 months. Aldi’s refurbished store will have a 28% increase in floor space, over 100 parking spaces, including for disabled customers, and four new, free, electric vehicle charging points. It will also provide around 50 local jobs (about fifteen more than previously.)

Commenting on the opening of the new expanded Aldi, Mark said: “After a long wait, on behalf of my constituents in Wickford, I am absolutely delighted to have cut the ribbon to officially reopen the expanded and refurbished Aldi Supermarket in Wickford.

“This is a very important asset for my constituents, many of whom have had to travel elsewhere in order to do their weekly shop. I would also like to thank Aldi for this major investment in my constituency, which will I am sure will be extremely popular with local residents. I wish the store and all its staff the very best for the future.”

Mark had previously met with Aldi’s Regional Managing Director, Graham Heatherington and their Regional Development Director, Roland Stanley, back in July to stress the importance of keeping to their original schedule of the 30th of November. This was because the store was being rebuilt at the same time as the old Co-op was closed, therefore during this interim period, Wickford residents had no access to a local supermarket, other than the small Iceland on the high street. Thus, importantly, with Aldi having kept to their original timescale, there will now be a much a wider range of choice for Wickford residents.

More than 800 attend Basildon Skills Show to explore skills and career opportunities The Basildon Skills Show, held on 17th October at the Towngate Theatre, provides advice and support to young people making decisions on their future. Basildon Council organised the event, which was sponsored by Gold Sponsor USP College and Silver Sponsor ACL Essex. The event saw a huge variety of stallholders all available to talk visitors through a variety of industries, from the public sector, finance, tech, construction, health and social care, and many more. In addition to meeting stallholders, young people were also able to hear talks from providers of further education such as colleges and universities as well as local employers to give them an insight into their future options. Stallholders at the event included Essex Police, BasildON Creative People and Places, Leonardo, The NHS, Morgan Sindall Property Services, Ford, DVR Limited, The Advice Store and many more.

Young people also took up the opportunity to have 1:2:1 appointments with a careers adviser and seminars on topics such as university applications, careers in finance, and an overview of apprenticeships. The event also included a dedicated hour for young people with additional needs to meet providers in a quieter environment. Ponds There are three ponds in this northern section of the wood which contain valuable communities of aquatic life. The pale pink flowers of the water violet can be seen covering the surface in early June along with bog-bean and skullcap around the margins. Also look out for damsel and dragonflies with their whirring transparent wings and brightly coloured bodies.

Trenches The network of trenches, dating from the First and Second World Wars, stretch from the north to the south of the eastern part of the wood. They were dug by the London Defence Volunteers who used this long stretch of the large medieval wood bank as part of the inner London defence line. During the Second World War the wood was also used for army manoeuvres and ammunition storage. Look out for smooth and palmate newts which can often be seen floating in the flooded ditch next to the first bridge during Spring time.

Hazel Plantation This area was planted to increase the amount of hazel in the wood after the 1987 storm. Clusters of brown nuts in Autumn help identify this plant along with the distinctive long yellow male catkins which shed their pollen in February. Heather has also developed on this site, where light is able to reach the woodland

What to do in the garden in January

January is the beginning of the gardening year – a time for fresh starts, renewed energy, and grand plans for the twelve months ahead. Jobs in the garden this month are mostly about keeping things trim and tidy, and getting ready for the year to come. If you’re itching to get growing, there are a few things you can do besides the obvious planting bare root roses, chitting first early potatoes and starting off your sweet pea seeds.

Timely Tips It might be cold outside, but there are still plenty of jobs to do in the garden this month. Here are the main ones: 1. Put your new-year enthusiasm to good use by cleaning pots, tools, water butts and greenhouses in preparation for spring. It’s not the most glamorous of tasks, but it will set you up for a great growing season. 2. Start planning what you want to do with your garden in the months to come. Now is the time to order seeds and plants from the comfort of your armchair (see next page). 3. Check your winter protection is still working for you — survey any stakes, supports and ties that might have been damaged in bad weather. 4. Continue looking after wildlife — put out wild birdfood for hungry birds and continue to leave some areas of your garden uncut for shelter until the spring.

In the flower garden Deadhead winter-flowering pansies to prevent them from going to seed. Here are your main tasks to do in the flower garden this month: Pruning and tidying • Prune your wisteria by cutting back whippy summer growth, leaving only 2 or 3 buds. • Prune rose bushes this month while they are still dormant. Cut branches back to just above a bud, making sure to remove any crossing or dead branches. • January is the month to start pruning rhododendrons. Read our guide to learn more. • If your honeysuckle is very overgrown, now is the best time to prune and cut back hard to encourage healthy, new growth this spring. • Cut back ornamental grasses. Clip back the old foliage from before new growth begins cut back to within a few centimetres of the ground. • Tidy up perennials. Cut down the old stems of perennial plants like sedum - be careful of any new growth. • Remove old hellebore leaves to expose the new blooms as they emerge this spring. • Cut back willow trees. Remove any damaged or diseased stems. Take out the oldest stems of brightly coloured willows, and thin out any overcrowding. • Remove any faded flowers from your winter pansies to stop them setting seed. Preheat oven to 180°C. 2. Sauté onion and garlic until softened. Add mushrooms, spinach, thyme, paprika, salt, and pepper. Cook until the moisture evaporates. 3. Stir in cooked brown rice and mix well. 4. Fill pepper halves with the mixture, top with grated cheese (if using), and bake for 25-30 minutes until peppers are tender. 42

Method 1. In a bowl, mix olive oil, minced garlic, lemon zest, lemon juice, parsley, salt, and pepper. Marinate chicken breasts for 30 minutes. 2. Grill chicken over medium heat until fully cooked, about 6-7 minutes per side. 3. Cook quinoa according to package instructions and let it cool. 4. In a large bowl, combine cooked quinoa, mixed salad greens, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, and red onion. 5. Drizzle with balsamic vinaigrette dressing and toss gently. Vegan Lentil and Sweet Potato Curry Ingredients 1 tablespoon coconut oil 1 onion, diced 3 garlic cloves, minced 2 teaspoons fresh ginger, grated 2 sweet potatoes, peeled and diced 1 cup dried red lentils 400ml can coconut milk 400ml vegetable broth 2 tablespoons curry powder 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon ground turmeric Salt and pepper to taste Fresh coriander for garnish Method 1. Heat coconut oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add diced onion, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Sauté until softened. 2. Add diced sweet potatoes, red lentils, coconut milk, vegetable broth, curry powder, cumin, turmeric, salt, and pepper. Stir well. 3. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20-25 minutes until sweet potatoes and lentils are tender. 4. Adjust seasoning if needed and serve the curry hot, garnished with fresh coriander.

Baked Lemon Salmon with Asparagus Ingredients 4 salmon fillets 2 lemons (1 sliced, 1 for juice) 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 teaspoon dried dill Salt and pepper to taste 400g asparagus spears, trimmed Lemon wedges for serving Method 1. Preheat oven to 200°C. 2. Place salmon fillets on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Arrange lemon slices on top of each fillet. 3. In a bowl, mix olive oil, minced garlic, dill, juice from one lemon, salt, and pepper. Brush this mixture over the salmon. 4. Place asparagus spears around the salmon on the baking tray. Drizzle them with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. 5. Bake for 12-15 minutes until the salmon is cooked through and flakes easily with a fork, and the asparagus is tender. 6. Serve the baked lemon salmon and asparagus with lemon wedges.

2023 Fun Walk Smashes Fundraising Goals Fun walk exceeds £1.5 million raised since inception. At a special celebration evening attended by many local charities and community groups, John Baron MP shared that with the 2023 annual walk, the Fun Walk has now reached a phenomenal milestone, as the total raised since it was founded in 2002 has now exceeded £1.5 million. This year’s Fun Walk raised over £85,000 with an estimated 2,000 supporters taking part in sponsored walks across Essex. The funds will be used for a wide variety of local charities and good causes including those supporting young people, mental health, disability, environmental, educational, community sporting and advocacy groups. John Baron MP and Chair of the Fun Walk Trustees said: “I’d like to congratulate all of the Fun Walk participants who have taken the time to fundraise for their local charities and community groups. £1.5 million is a huge achievement and we are so pleased and proud to have reached this milestone.
