“This year Bailey achieved his full license, Search and Rescue Dog not just for the UK but for UK International Bailey special feature in a Search and Rescue too. His training is always continuing to ensure he stays at the book for Dogs Trust top of his game. A Search and Rescue Dog from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service (ECFRS), specialising in live scent search has been featured in The Little Dog That Laughed book for the Dogs Trust. Being described as unruly, untrainable, and unsociable, Bailey was taken in by the Dogs Trust in Loughborough back in 2021. After spending some time with Bailey, the team at the Dogs Trust saw that he had potential. The charity contacted the UK International Search and Rescue (UKISAR) and other services to ask if anyone was looking for a new search dog. Graham Currie, who is a Watch Manager and Dog Handler for the Service said:

“I’d been looking for a dog for just under a year when I saw the plea from the Dogs Trust. So, I went up to Loughborough the following day to see what Bailey was like. “After testing his drive for a tennis ball and

checking he had no aggression towards other dogs or people, I offered to take him on a six-week trial.” Now two years on, Graham describes Bailey as the most natural search and rescue dog, and his inspiring story has been featured in The Little Dog that Laughed book for the Dogs Trust.

Graham adds: “Bailey was quite a handful to begin with, as he had little to no training and was very head strong.

“The biggest challenge was, as I call them now his ‘Fenton moments’, chasing rabbits or deer and disappearing over the horizon. But some Primula cheese spread, and a lot of patience has seen Bailey turn his life around.

“Bailey has fallen on his feet and has got a purpose in life and who knows how many lives he may save over his career.” A spokesperson from the Dogs Trust said: “From the first time Bailey arrived at Dogs Trust Loughborough, it was clear that he was destined for greatness.

“Initially found as a stray, he quickly adapted to life at Dogs Trust and successfully passed all his tests. Bailey’s hard work and unwavering resilience has landed him a job at the Essex Country Fire and Rescue Service, where he continues to show his determination and goodwill through supporting the local community.”

Trauma Survivors Across Essex Launch Film to Improve Uptake of Cervical Screening Healthwatch Essex have launched a film produced in collaboration with our Trauma Ambassador Group showing the impact a cervical screening can have on those who live with the effects of trauma. With nearly 1 in 3 people not attending their cervical screening appointments, the Healthwatch Essex Trauma Ambassador Group (TAG) recognised a need for sharing the unique challenges that trauma survivors may experience. Working with the group, Healthwatch Essex produced a short film in a clinical environment to demonstrate the trigger-points for trauma survivors and educate professionals on how appointments can be improved to make patients more comfortable. Staff at Beacon House in Colchester kindly provided the space for an ambassador to walk through the process of a cervical screening appointment with a nurse, Michelle, demonstrating a number of trigger-points within an appointment, ranging from the language used, to the setup of the room and the often-rushed feel of an appointment. One of the main suggestions for trauma survivors from the ambassadors included holding and using the Healthwatch Essex Trauma Card. Della (pictured left) is a member of the Trauma Ambassador Group. She was instrumental in the creation of the film, and features in it: “Too often women are given scare tactics around cervical screening “you could die” type comments and data. We know that already. We need to be heard and supported and have trauma informed clinics available or a Trauma Card that is understood by practitioners.”

Sharon Westfield-de-Cortez, Healthwatch Essex Information and Guidance Manager, created the Trauma Ambassador Group. She said: “We understand that everyone is unique, and that other factors may influence people’s feelings around the screening process, such as having experienced domestic abuse or female genital mutilation, and that these can create additional barriers. We would encourage anyone in this situation to contact the surgery or clinic they will be accessing to request a conversation about this prior to the procedure, so that they can ask the questions you need to and receive appropriate reassurance. Alf Dove Award Six new recipients of prestigious Alf Dove Award The recipients of the award were announced in a presentation at a meeting of Full Council on Thursday 19th October 2023.

A commemorative plaque will be placed among recently planted trees in Gloucester Park, Basildon and the recipients received a replica plaque and a framed image.

The Alf Dove Award is presented to members of the local community to recognise and mark the significant community service they have given to the Borough.

Mayor of Basildon, Cllr Luke Mackenzie, presented the nominees with their awards: “It’s an absolute pleasure to recognise individuals who go above and beyond to represent their borough with such passion.

For 2023, six recipients were selected to receive the award. Each individual was nominated by a Basildon Borough Councillor. News Around New opportunities for young people with SEND

Essex County Council have added more than 60 new activities, clubs and groups to the Essex Local Offer. This means even more children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), and their families, can benefit from inclusive opportunities across the county. The Essex Local Offer gives information about support available to children and young people aged between 0 to 25, and their parents and carers. This includes information on learning, health and wellbeing, and what to do if you think your child needs help. You can also use the Local Offer directory to search for support services, groups and activities in Essex. The improved Essex Local Offer website launched last year. Since then, we have continued to increase the number of opportunities on the website for children and young people with SEND in Essex. A recent campaign aimed at getting more businesses, clubs and charities to join the free online directory has seen a sharp increase in the number of opportunities available to Essex residents. Healthwatch Essex raise awareness of the dangers of nitrous oxide balloons

In their Hidden Voices podcast, Healthwatch Essex recently released an episode concerning the worrying trend of nitrous oxide/balloons. This podcast captures stories and experiences across health and social care that we are less likely to hear, no topic is off limits, and issues that are less talked about and explored are the focus with an aim to understand them more. Titled “Don’t Follow This Path – Addiction to Balloons” the episode heard Josh tell his story about being addicted to nitrous oxide balloons, the side effects and dangers involved and how it has affected his life. A huge thanks goes out to the Wickford Christian Centre for temporarily hosting the Churches Together Wickford Foodbank for the last few months. The Foodbank will now be back at the Salvation Army, Jersey Gardens, serving guests weekly from 10am – 11:30am.

Essex Highways to start winter service

Crews have been familiarising themselves with gritting routes in preparation for the colder months. Routes prioritise main roads, access to emergency facilities and busy bus routes. They also prioritise areas where frost and ice have caused accidents. Essex Highways’ 49 gritters, plus two mini gritters, cover approximately 2,000 miles of roads across Essex. This is about 40% of the network. Last winter, around 20,500 tonnes of salt were used on Essex’s roads, with the gritters out on the network approximately 70 times.

Wickford Town The drivers gritting the roads are the same as those carrying out road and pavement repairs across Essex. When the weather is particularly wintry, gritting the roads and making them safe for people to travel becomes the priority. £800,000 to help Essex schoolchildren get on their bikes

Essex County Council have secured a grant of £800,000 to provide cycle training to primary school children. Funding will be used over the next two years. It comes from Bikeability Trust UK, which administers the national Bikeability programme. This is on behalf of Active Travel England. Bikeability is the government’s national cycle training programme. It gives young people practical skills and confidence to safely cycle on roads. Qualified, expert instructors deliver training all year round. Almost 4,000 sessions were delivered to primary school children in 2023. This summer, over 200 young people took part in 42 different Bikeability courses in Essex Councillor Tom Cunningham, Cabinet Member for Highways, Infrastructure and

Sustainable Transport, said: “A generation of young people in Essex will now have the confidence to cycle and be able to make safer, greener and healthier travel choices thanks to this new funding. Our ambition is to make sure that no child leaves primary school in Essex without the knowledge, confidence and opportunity to ride a bike. Essex County Fire and Rescue Service celebrates Long Service and Good Conduct Awards

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service (ECFRS) honoured staff for their long service, commitment, and dedication at a special awards ceremony. Colleagues, friends and families gathered at Colchester Community Stadium on Thursday 19th October to recognise fire service staff who have completed more than 20, 30 and 40 years and beyond of exemplary service. The event was opened by Chief Fire Officer/ Chief Executive Rick Hylton and Roger Hirst, Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner. His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Essex, Mrs Jennifer Tolhurst along with Deputy Chief Fire Officer Moira Bruin and Assistant Chief Fire Officer Andy Smith presented the awards and medals to the officers. Essex County Fire and Rescue Service prides itself on recognising the achievements of all of its colleagues and values the contributions everyone makes.

Find Your Active with Pieces of the Puzzle Finding your active is like putting together a puzzle and sometimes we need to try different pieces to see what fits! Trying new and different activities is how we do this and it may take a while to find the right fit. The journey to complete the puzzle should be fun and trying something new is always a good way to boost confidence and make new connections. One way to explore what’s available to you is by using the Find Your Active Activity Finder, an online tool that helps narrow down the search to a certain area or activity. This tool has a wide range of groups and clubs so you can find what interests you like playing football or getting active in nature! Local groups and clubs who help others are an inspiration and are an incredible asset to the local community. Whether that’s setting up a team supporting residents living with a disability, looking for a way to get active and make friends, to a group that helps young people relax and disengage from daily stresses through movement. The Move With Us campaign recognises how important movement can be for young people. The campaign offers great advice to encourage increased activity like putting on your favourite song or playlist to motivate you to

move! Music and activity can reduce stress and support wellbeing. Sometimes getting active means more than just physical activity and November’s mental health focus should highlight how beneficial activity can be for looking after mental wellbeing. Getting outside with a friend or colleague for a walk can be protected time for a chat that encourages important conversations about how you’re doing. November brings focus to men’s mental health and recognises how important it is to prioritise mental and physical wellbeing. For men, adding movement into their routine could be the missing puzzle piece to a healthier lifestyle because this is dedicated time to support their mental health. Seeing the benefits of added movement and protected time for wellbeing activities can

encourage men to maintain this routine and also invite others to join their journey. Mental health issues affect us all and that’s why it’s important to encourage people to use physical activity to boost the positive hormones associated with movement to feel more confident and happier. The Able like Mabel campaign recognises this and promotes gentle exercises that not only build strength and resilience in older residents but make them feel more positive as many may be facing isolation.

The Reflection Garden Friends of the Wickford Memorial Park Volunteer Group Continuing articles on the Wickford Memorial Park - this month we will be reporting on our Open Day for the new Reflection Garden.

The main project was funded by the National Lottery and funds from Essex County Council for the Cherry Trees. But the creation of the garden is all down to the hard work of the volunteers and Basildon Council Parks and Countryside Team. The Friends wished a big thank you to: All who attended and the support they have had from the community; To all the volunteers whether you were there or not, such hard work by all to make this project happen; And the parks staff for believing in the project and helping with making the vision come to life which also wouldn’t have been possible without them. The Friends of the Wickford Memorial Park are very proud of the Reflection Garden which has been a huge undertaking and four years in the planning, fundraising and planting.

The Reflection Garden has now been officially finished and opened. Park staff as helpful as always providing a gazebo and supporting the group.

We have met some amazing people this summer. Every outing has been enjoyable and it’s been so heart-warming to hear so many lovely comments about our displays.
