Initiatives offering energy efficiency improvements
Eligible residents encouraged to apply for initiatives offering energy efficiency improvements to homes.
Brentwood Borough Council is working in partnership with Essex County Council, Better Housing Better Health (BHBH) and the National Energy Foundation (NEF), to bring residents energy efficiency grants ECO4 and GBIS.
Applications are now open, providing residents with opportunities to enhance energy efficiency in their homes.
The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) and The Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) aim to assist low-income families by enhancing the energy efficiency of their homes while reducing carbon footprint. Through these programs, residents can apply to have solar panels, heat pumps, and other energy-efficient measures installed at little to no cost.
ECO4 and GBIS are available to homeowners and tenants, with landlord permission, with a household income below £31,000 and Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) between D and G. Residents with a property tax band between A and D can also apply for the GBIS. Both schemes are also available to residents with a qualifying benefit or health condition.
No income limit is applied to those with a qualifying health condition.
Eligible residents could save energy costs and improve their EPC rating with insulation, boiler replacements, low-energy lighting, air source heat pumps and solar panels. This will help families phase out high carbon, fossil fuel heating and reduce fuel poverty.
Councillor Barry Aspinell, Chair of the Clean and Green Committee said, “We are pleased to offer these schemes to assist our residents with improving their energy efficiency, reducing their bills and keeping their homes warm for less. Alongside other support such as the Home Upgrade Grant (HUG2), this demonstrates our commitment to helping the vulnerable in our community. If you or anyone you know would benefit from the ECO4 or GBIS schemes, I would urge you to enquire with our partners immediately.”
For more details and to find out if you are eligible for either ECO4 or GBIS visit www.brentwood.gov.uk/energyefficiency-for-your-home-grants-andschemes
Both schemes will run until 31st March 2026.

We would like to thank each and every one of you for your continuing support, we couldn’t continue to feed so many local people without you.
Thanks to your help we have had a good response to our recruitment drive and have already taken on some new volunteers.
There is sadly still such a great need by so many people who are needing help with being able to feed themselves and their families. We are seeing new clients every session who feel ashamed and humiliated at having to ask for help.
We do our very best to make them welcome and in many cases, we can signpost them to other organisations that can help them, for example CAP (for debt) or Peabody (for housing and benefit issues).
This is only possible because of your kindness and generosity and we hope and pray that you will still be able to support us.
Kind regards
Dave (Foodbank volunteer)

Harmony Brass celebrate at the Village Hall.
The popular Essex based brass ensemble Harmony Brass are preparing for their next visit to Stock Village Hall on Saturday 8th June at 7:30pm, when they will be celebrating the ensemble’s 40th Anniversary by presenting a special concert for the occasion.
The event will include the usual eclectic and popular mix of music for all tastes, and will feature a selection of audience favourites enjoyed by the group’s supporters over the past 40 years.
To mark this important milestone, Harmony Brass have chosen to donate all of the profit from the evening to a well deserving local charity, Remus Horse Sanctuary, which celebrated its own 40th anniversary in 2023. The sanctuary has approximately 200 animals in its care at their wonderful home at Buttsbury, and never turn away new arrivals who may be
suffering from abuse, abandonment, injury or non-coping owners.
The income needed to fund this magnificent work comes solely from donations and sponsors and, after a reduction of both during COVID, income has not yet returned to pre-COVID levels. The cost of everything has rocketed and Remus has had to deal with serious increases in veterinary costs and winter feed, as well as general running costs.
Please, if you can, come and join our fantastic and friendly Village Hall audience on 8th June. Bring your own drinks and nibbles. Tables for up to eight are provided for our club style seating arrangements.
Tickets £20, are on sale now from: The Box Office, telephone 01277 622456

Will Writer’s Words of Wisdom Red for Danger / Green for Safety
A beneficiary or their spouse should not be a witness to a Will, or they will disinherit themselves
Unless it has a contemplation of marriage clause, marriage or re-marriage invalidates a Will, requiring a new arrangement
Without a Will, spouses and civil partners are NOT automatically entitled to all of the estate assets on death
Without a Will, the Government could inherit your estate if you die with no surviving traceable relatives
If a couple dies simultaneously, the elder is deemed to have died first - s184 Law of Property Act 1925, leaving only the younger spouse’s family to inherit
Without a Will, the Rules of Intestacy, ie ‘The Government Will’, could land the children with a 40% IHT (Inheritance Tax) liability
Even if an estate is less than £5,000, Probate may still be required re lifetime gifts in the preceding 7 years, so take legal advice
If you have no surviving parents, siblings, grandparents, uncles or aunts, then under the Intestacy Rules, the whole estate goes to the Crown or the Duchy of Lancaster or the Duke of Cornwall
Although divorce does not invalidate your Will, marriage/re-marriage will indeed invalidate your Will, unless a marriage clause has been embedded
A properly worded Will could ensure that half the value of your home is potentially protected against Local Authority care home fees
Always appoint charities as your final beneficiaries, to avoid your estate being claimed by the Government
By the use of a Property Protection Trust, you can ensure that if you pre-decease and your spouse re-marries and has more children, your own children benefit from your share of your home, and not the new spouse
If children have special care needs, an appropriate ‘Disabled Discretionary Trust’ could avoid loss of State benefits on inheriting your estate
If you own property abroad, you should arrange a Will in that country, to avoid costly fees and Probate delay
The estates of current or retired members of the Armed Forces are entitled to exemption from Inheritance Tax if they die on active service, or if their later death was caused by an injury or disease that was received or aggravated while they were on active service. This was extended in the 2014 Budget to members of the police, fire and ambulance services and emergency service personnel and humanitarian aid workers
There is no Inheritance Tax liability if the deceased spouse has left their entire estate to their surviving spouse or civil marriage partner
Provide in your Will for continuity of your business on your death

Essex welcomes new High Sheriff
Taking on a role that is steeped in history and making it relevant and a force for good in modern times is a challenge being met with enthusiasm and determination by David Hurst.
He is joining the ranks of men and a few women who, over the past 982 years, have been appointed as High Sheriff of Essex. Armed with an impressive amount of experience in the business and voluntary sectors, David is aiming to make the most of his year of office and will travel the county, helping to highlight its attributes and its needs.
David has been involved in his own community as a volunteer for decades and has been chairman and trustee with several charities. He is currently president of Southend Round Table 106 and his charitable fundraising efforts over the years led to him becoming chairman of the Southend Community Fund, which is managed by the independent charitable trust, Essex Community Foundation (ECF).
As High Sheriff of Essex, David, who was born and bred in the county, will be raising money for the High Sheriffs’ Fund, also run by ECF, with the aim of promoting crime prevention and community safety in Essex.

Festivals of art hit the High Streets with the return of the popular Brentwood Art Trail
This year’s Brentwood Art Trail from Brentwood Connected, the new Business Improvement District (BID) across Brentwood, Shenfield and Ingatestone, takes place between 1st - 30th June.
The long-running annual event will be bigger than ever with support from the Brentwood Connected BID, which is funded by Town Centre businesses to improve the visitor experience in Brentwood, Shenfield and Ingatestone. The event continues to be supported by Baker Labels, Blue Serif and Brentwood Borough Council.
Running for an entire month, Art Festivals will take place in each High Street, while the Trail will celebrate the work of 70 local artists by showcasing their art in pop-up galleries in Brentwood, Shenfield and Ingatestone. Throughout June, 60 businesses, including Bennetts Funerals, Hey Joe Music & Coffee, Jasmine Bleu, Kennadys, Sienna’s Restaurant, The Ginger Tree, Tees, Tom Howley Kitchens, Waterstones, Woodland Coffee Shop and all three branches of Beresfords, will take part. A Brentwood Art Trail Pop-Up Gallery will also be open at the Baytree Shopping Centre for the duration of the Trail, supported by Q-Mix Concrete.
Emma Thurgood of Sincerely Yours in Shenfield will host artist Becky Wash’s crafts during the Trail. Emma said, “We’re always excited about the Brentwood Art Trail and love being a part of such a successful creative event which supports local businesses and brings the community together. We’re looking forward to welcoming lots of people into the shop this June, and can’t wait to see everyone admiring Becky’s work in the window.”
Featured artists include Brentwood-based Amelia Hart, who has worked with the internationally renowned artist Damien Hirst; Lucia Hardy and John Ball, who have experienced success on Sky Arts’ Landscape Artist of the Year; Carole Windham, who trained at the Royal College of Art and has had work displayed at Tate Britain; and members of the Brentwood & District Photographic Club, which was established in the area over 70 years ago. More than 1,000 local primary school children will also have the opportunity to display their art after taking part in a special Brentwood Art Trail online lesson
Walk, Talk & Create sponsors Lindsay Wildgust (L) and Sue Mills (R) of Create Yourself Calm, who will host an event at Butterfly Meadow.

A Scribble Board Art Jam, encouraging collaborative creativity, will take place in all three High Streets with artist Mike Young.
ponsored by Chicken Frog Bookshop, Guided Learning and Kip McGrath.
Free Art Festivals will take place on the first three Saturdays of the Trail - bringing creative, fun, familyfriendly events to the three High Streets.
Starting on Saturday 1st June, a Guided Tour will take place in Brentwood to launch the Trail, followed by a Plein Air Art Experience at the Chapel Ruins, led by Amelia Hart and Lucia Hardy. This will be accompanied by a Portrait Painting Demonstration with Nancy Walker in the Pop-Up Gallery, Chalk Drawing in Crown Street, and a Scribble Board Art Jam with artist Mike Young, where visitors will be invited to make their mark on a collaborative piece of artwork which will travel between the High Streets during the Trail’s Saturday Art Festivals. Special events in Shenfield and Ingatestone include more Guided Tours, an exciting Live Street Art Event with urban artist Penfold at foureighty on Saturday 8 June, and a special Artisan Ingatestone Artists’ Market on Saturday 15th June.
Throughout the Trail, free Walk Talk & Create events take place, visiting locations like Butterfly Meadow, Merrymeade Country Park, Warley Place Nature Reserve and Weald Country Park.
These give visitors the opportunity to enjoy the outdoor spaces in the borough, before creating some artwork under the tuition of an artist. This year’s Walk, Talk & Create events are sponsored by Create Yourself Calm and the Brentwood Arts Therapy Centre. There will be other artistled workshops throughout the Trail, plus a special screening of ‘Midnight In Paris’ at Brentwood Theatre.
Local artists are also looking forward to the event, particularly Sue Mills. She will be displaying work in Liquorice in Shenfield, teaching an online art lesson for primary schools, and hosting and sponsoring Walk, Talk & Create sessions with qualified counsellor Lindsay Wildgust and their mindful art business, Create Yourself Calm. “I’ve been a part of the Brentwood Art Trail for many years now, and I love the way it brings people together in Brentwood, Shenfield and Ingatestone. From the minute all the artists are revealed on social media, to the final day in June, it’s a really exciting time to be part of the creative community here, showcasing work and engaging with people through art.”

s your home phone ready to go digital?
The UK’s
telephone
network is changing.
By 2025, traditional phone lines will be replaced by a digital landline service. This means that calls will be made over a broadband line.
For most people, this change will be straightforward. Before your phone line changes, your telephone provider will contact you. Depending on your provider, this could be a letter, text, email, postcard or leaflet.
It’s important to respond to your provider and discuss what you need to do to keep using your phone line.
Who isn’t affected by the switchover?
Nothing will change if you:
• do not have a landline
• only use mobile phones in your home
• already use a digital phone line
How to make sure your landline stays switched on
If you already have broadband set up at home
This should be a simple change. Your home phone will be plugged into your broadband router instead of the wall-mounted socket. You will also keep your phone number.
If you do not already have broadband set up at home
To continue using your landline, you will
need to switch to a digital phone line. Your telephone provider should contact you to let you know what you need to do to make sure your service isn’t affected. If you have any concerns, contact your telephone provider.
When to contact your telephone provider
If any of the following apply to you, or someone you know, contact your telephone provider.
• you do not use broadband at home
• you use a personal alarm or healthcare device
• you have additional needs
• you live in an area with no mobile signal
• you have concerns or questions about what you need to do to make sure your phone line isn’t affected
Your telephone provider will tell you what you need to do to keep using your phone line, and help you take extra steps to prepare.
How do I find out who my telephone provider is?
To find out who your telephone provider is, check your phone bill. Your bill should include the provider’s name and contact details. If you have recently moved into a property and are not sure who provides the land line, you can dial 150 to find out.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
I have already told my provider that I have a personal alarm and/or additional needsdo I need to do anything else?
You do not need to do anything else if your telephone provider already knows you have additional needs, use a personal alarm/healthcare device or are vulnerable. Your provider will contact you before anything changes.
What will happen during a powercut if I have a digital phone line?
Digital phone lines rely on a power supply, so if there is a power cut, you will need to use a mobile phone. If your area has poor mobile signal, or you have no mobile phone for emergency calls, your provider will give a solution to allow calls to be made in emergencies.
Are there any costs for the switchover? Your telephone provider will not ask for money to switch you to a digital line. Be aware of fraud – if you receive any requests for money, report it on the Action Fraud website or call 0300 123 2040.
Where can I get more information from? If you have concerns or questions about the switch to a digital phone line, contact your telephone provider.
You can also find information on the Which and the www.gov.uk websites.
