Popular Artisan Market Returns, Bringing Handmade Crafters And Creators To Ingatestone
This year’s Artisan Ingatestone Winter Market takes place on Saturday 9th November between 10am and 4pm.
The popular event is supported by Brentwood Connected, the Business Improvement District (BID) in Brentwood, Shenfield and Ingatestone, and Ingatestone & Fryerning Parish Council. The market will bring more than 25 independent local artisan businesses to the Ingatestone Community Centre and encourage people to discover the High Street with special offers and activities hosted by businesses.
There will also be live music throughout the day, in collaboration with Brentwood’s independent music shop, Hey Joe Music & Coffee.
This is the seventh Artisan Ingatestone Market to take place, after a record-breaking Spring market in March and a special artists’ market as part of the Brentwood Art Trail in June. The event is the perfect opportunity to ‘support local’ and stock up on early Christmas gifts, discovering independent creators and taking advantage of unique gift-buying opportunities from handmade artisan makers. Stallholders will include Alpaca Products, Bear & Buddy, Last Jar and Kate Mayo Ceramics, all based in Brentwood or Ingatestone, plus Dainty London Jewellery, Jean Genie Denim, Little Black Cat Jewellery, Retro From Scratch, and some new additions. Ingatestone’s High Street retailers will also host activities and special offers especially for Artisan Ingatestone Market day to encourage visitors to explore the village.
If you’re planning to attend Artisan Ingatestone, please note there is free parking on the day available at Anglo European School, located on Willow Green, Ingatestone CM14 0DJ.

Support to upgrade household heating ahead of cold winter months
You can now register your interest in making your home’s heating more efficient and eco-friendly with reduced cost.
Air source heat pumps can cut carbon emissions by 44% each year. Their efficiency ratings also typically reach 300%.
As a result, air source heat pumps can save on energy bills over time. However, they can also come with a high upfront cost.
Switch Together is able to keep the cost down for Essex homeowners through group buying. This involves:
• Register your interest for free and without obligation by 1st November 2024
• A list of vetted installers compete by bidding to work with interested local residents. They offer their most competitive price without compromising on quality
• Receive a personalised offer via email. This details all costs and specifications tailored to your home. There is still no obligation to proceed
• Review the offer at your own pace. If you choose to proceed, the installer will schedule a survey and complete the installation
• Telephone and email help desks are available throughout. This helps you make an informed decision in a hassle-free environment
Essex County Council are helping deliver Switch Together in partnership with iChoosr which are behind the successful Solar Together programme.
Councillor Peter Schwier, the Essex County Council Climate Czar and Cabinet Member for Environment, Waste Reduction and Recycling, said: “Household heating accounts for about 14% of the country’s CO2 emissions. Considering how energy bills have risen, it is in everyone’s interest that modern and efficient air source heat pumps are made more accessible to Essex homeowners.”
You can significantly reduce your carbon footprint by making the switch to more efficient heating and water.
You must be a homeowner in Essex to benefit from Switch Together. To find out more and register your interest visit www.switchtogether.com/heat-pump
You could make further savings with a £7,500 grant from the Boiler Upgrade Scheme towards a new heat pump installation. Heat pump installations are also currently VAT-exempt. To apply for the boiler upgrade scheme visit www.gov.uk/apply-boiler-upgradescheme

Marie Curie need Essex volunteers
Would you be happy to spare a little time to support your local area for Marie Curie?
We are actively looking for volunteers to support with all things fundraising.
Planned are some collections around Essex towards the end of the year and then for our annual Daffodil appeal between February and April. There is help needed with organising collections and contacting existing collectors in the area to produce a rota for the collection day. There is no experience needed for this! Just a sense of humor, a little bit of time and enjoying doing something worthwhile in your local area that will benefit patients and families at the end of their life, that need support, with a service that is free to everyone involved when it is needed the most.
We are also looking for support with collection tins and daffodil box placements, this could be a business that is wanting to support or individuals that can spare some time every 8-12 weeks with changing over, banking and liaising with your fundraiser.
If you are aged 18 and over and are interested in becoming a Marie Curie supporter, please contact Angela Taylor on 07872 503670 or email: angela.taylor@mariecurie.org.uk
Thank you!

Update from New Folly Surgery September 2024
The surgery is prepping for flu season with the help of new staff.
Flu Season 2024/25
New Folly Surgery will start delivering winter flu vaccinations to all the appropriate health groups from October 2024 with 2 Saturdays being set up for the walk in sessions (5th and 12th October) - more details will be released via the practice website in mid September. There will also be weekly flu clinics with the practice nurses and these are being coordinated to start in early October.
Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Immunizations
The newly NHS introduced RSV vaccinations will also be delivered from the Surgery in September and throughout the autumn, mainly with the flu vaccinations. This new vaccination is designated for patients over 75 years and older and pregnant women and helps protect against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). RSV is a common cause of coughs and colds.
We are ordering the new vaccine stocks and will update the website and send comms messages when we are ready to start vaccinating.
New Staff
Sarah, our trainee Advanced Nurse left the Surgery in August. We will be recruiting a new clinical member of staff to support the GPs and Nursing team in due course. Josh, our Clinical Paramedic continues to support us on a regular weekly basis. Lorraine, one of our long serving reception staff retired in September and we wish her well. Surabhi, our placement student during the last year has left for medical school and has been replaced by Gio who will be with us until August 2025 as one of the clinical coders. Viki is also joining us in October as part of the care navigation team.

Brentwood Connected helps the business community to combat crime together
The Brentwood Connected Business Improvement District (BID), Essex Police and the Shop Safe team have been visiting local branches of national stores to deliver TownLink radios to combat crime.
Staff in Brentwood High Street shops including Boots, Cancer Research UK, Claire’s, Greggs, Holland & Barrett, Iceland, Marks & Spencer, Poundland, Robert Dyas, Sports Direct, Superdrug, Tesco and Waterstones have been equipped with radios, with plans to involve more businesses in the coming months and include Shenfield and Ingatestone.
The Shop Safe scheme works with Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), safety partnerships and local authorities across the country in the fight against town centre crime. The TownLink radios directly link to both Brentwood Borough Council’s CCTV control room and the Brentwood Connected Town Rangers, enabling businesses to share vital information and keep the area well managed and safe.
PC Alex Plakhtienko, of Essex Police’s specialist Business Crime Team accompanied Sarah Walmsley, Brentwood Connected’s Business Improvement District (BID) Manager, to deliver Shop Safe radios to businesses in Brentwood High Street and train staff on their use. He says, “We’re pleased to work with Brentwood Connected to help business owners and retailers keep themselves, their staff and their premises safe and secure. The TownLink radio scheme makes it easy for staff to communicate with other businesses in the area and to discuss issues of concern. We look forward to rolling them out to retailers in Ingatestone and Shenfield next.
“We encourage businesses to continue working together and, through our ‘Open For Business, Closed For Crime’ campaign, we encourage them to report criminal behaviour to us. This allows us to target our operational activity and also identify emerging crime trends, which means we can provide tailored crime prevention advice and work together with Brentwood Connected and individual businesses to make our high streets safe, friendly and welcoming places to live, shop and work.”
Rianna from Greggs with Brentwood Connected BID Manager Sarah Walmsley and PC Alex Plakhtienko

W hat to do in the garden in October
October is a beautiful month of autumnal colours and first frosts.
Crisp, blue-sky days are the perfect time to tidy up and cut back in the garden. If you grow fruit and veg, there’s still plenty to harvest and store for the cold winter months ahead.
T imely Tips
• If your greenhouse is fairly empty, now’s a good time to clean and disinfect it. This lets in more light, and prevents pests and diseases from over-wintering.
• Protect half-hardy plants with fleece or bring them into a frost-free greenhouse.
• Sweep up any fallen leaves that harbour fungal spores and provide ideal hiding places for slugs and snails. Use them to make leaf mould for the garden.
• Lift and divide any overcrowded herbaceous perennials whilst the soil is still warm.
L ooking after your lawn
• Clear up fallen leaves regularly to allow light to the grass.
• A last mowing can be made this month before leaving your lawn for the winter.
• Recut any lawn edges if needed. Install lawn edging to make future maintenance easier.
• Aerate your lawn with a garden fork to avoid waterlogging and compaction over winter.
• Rake any thatch from the surface and repair dead patches. There’s still time to lay fresh turf if required.
In the vegetable garden
• If you plan to grow peas and beans next year, start preparing the site by digging trenches and filling with manure or kitchen waste.
• Harvest pumpkins and squashes before the first frosts. They quickly turn mushy if left outside!
• When you harvest your cabbages, leave the root in the ground and make a cut across the stem to encourage a flush of smaller leaves.
• Hang any tomato plants and pepper plants with green fruits upside down indoors to ripen.
In the flower garden
• Prune rambling and climbing roses once they’ve finished flowering, and tie in the stems before autumn winds cause damage.
• Clear up fallen rose leaves to prevent diseases such as black spot from over-wintering. To avoid the spread of damaging fungi, don’t compost the leaves.
• Clear overhanging plants from pathways to maintain access around the garden.
• Cut back perennial plants that have died down. Alternatively leave the dead foliage in place to shelter friendly wildlife.
• After tidying borders, mulch with bark chips, well-rotted manure, leaf mould or spent mushroom compost to insulate plant roots for the winter and keep weed growth in check.
• This month is the ideal time to plant hedges, edible hedging, and move trees and shrubs.
Remember to check for hedgehogs before lighting any bonfires!

Meet and Paint Group Display
In Ingatestone Library there is a display of the work from Ingatestone’s Meet and Paint Group artists. The paintings are very varied and range from abstract to animals to a sketch of “Scotts” believed to be the oldest residence in Ingatestone. Contact details of the group are shown with the art work, if you are interested the artists get together every Monday afternoon at 2PM in the Pavilion on Seymour Field. There is no tuition or demonstration just artists painting, talking about their work, with tea and coffee of course.
Heritage Days
Displayed in Ingatestone Library are several panels connected to Ingatestone’s rich heritage. Illustrated here is the display by Ingatestone’s Pedallers social cycling group, leader Robert Fletcher, of their J A Baker cycle ride, showing the map and places associated with Baker, who lived locally and wrote the book
“The Peregrine” which is widely regarded as one of the most outstanding books on nature in the twentieth century.
Anglo European School Heritage
As part of the Heritage exhibition in Ingatestone library is a display about the Anglo European School, which celebrated its 50th anniversary this year. A panel put together by Robert Fletcher (who actually went to the original school, but before it became the AES) shows the development of the school over time. An interesting fact is that Ingatestone library itself celebrates 50 years in the
current building, there has been a library in the village for over 88 years now.
Car parking improved and extended
The car park for the Pavilion and Seymour Field, well known for its ruts, tree roots and other challenges to drivers has been repaired and extended! It now has a flat surface with marked out bays, this was made possible by money received by the Parish Council from recent building developments to spend on infrastructure.
Outdoor Gym - Official Opening
On Saturday 7th September the Outdoor Gym in Seymour Field (near the Pavilion) was officially opened by Parish Council Chairman Paul Jeater and Councillor David Kendle of Brentwood Borough Council. Both said a few words about the

importance of fitness, how the gym can benefit the community and the importance of this had been recognised by the UK Government’s shared prosperity fund who had paid for it.
Lloyd from Freshair Fitness then explained and demonstrated how to use the equipment safely and effectively with Councillor Marilyn Marsten acting as his Guinea pig. She said that the experience was very enjoyable and that it showed that this was both an opportunity to keep fit and have fun!
Council maintains active travel rating
Essex County Council have maintained their strong rating for delivering active travel across Essex.
Active Travel
England has confirmed the council continue to have a capability rating of two. This represents ‘visible local leadership and support with an emerging network’. The rating reflects the council’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure and policies which encourage cycling and walking.
It also signifies strong local leadership, clear plans with some active travel elements in place. This includes the Healthy School Streets programme on Sawyers Hall Lane in Brentwood and a two-way cycling facility on Head Street in Colchester. The council also recently
consulted on a new draft cycling strategy for Essex. Find out more about the Active Travel England ratings at www.gov.uk/government/organisations/ active-travel-england
Mysterious Space Spotted
Captured by Freddie Norton in September this mysterious space appeared in the front section of Patrick Green’s hardware store and Country Café. Many shoppers were asking why? But the staff at PGs were keeping mum. Speculation is that it is to take on new lines of products or maybe a Father Christmas Grotto? Perhaps even a virtual reality experience? We will have to wait and see, but knowing the go-ahead nature of the owners it will be worth waiting for!
Council awarded over £40,000 funding for swimming Poolpod at the Brentwood Centre
A ‘Poolpod 3’ will be installed in the swimming pool at the Brentwood Centre, thanks to successful grant funding by Brentwood Borough Council, in partnership with Brentwood Access Group.
A Poolpod is a submersible platform lift that provides a flexible and dignified means of entering and leaving a swimming pool for a person with limited mobility. It is suitable for adults and children living with a disability, customers with young children, and older customers who may not consider themselves disabled but who may benefit from easier access.
The Poolpod will be installed at the Brentwood Centre swimming pool later this year.

Breathing in the fresh air, taking in natural light and surrounding oneself with nature significantly reduces stress and enhances our connection with the world around us. Boosted clarity and focus can have further effects on family and work life. From one change to our routine, a bounty of positive effects can occur!
If we educate young people and teach them the invaluable lesson of how beneficial activity is for wellbeing, this will help their development and carry a love of activity through to adulthood. Currently in Essex, 36,000 young people aged between 5 and 18 years old experience mental health challenges.
Harnessing the benefits of physical activity could be key to improving this statistic and projects like Active Essex Foundation’s Youth Sport and Mental Health project understand that intervention is needed. To reduce expensive clinical treatment and waiting times, the project aims to create safe active spaces for young people to find something that works for them and
supports their wellbeing. This could be achieved through boxing, martial arts, dance and many other forms of movement!
Exploring different sorts of movements depending on ability is important for adding daily active minutes into a routine. Long term health conditions and disabilities can often appear as barriers to leading an active lifestyle but there can be joy found in discovering something that makes you feel happy and healthier.
Active Essex have a health and wellbeing webpage that assists those managing a range of health conditions. It’s of vital importance to Active Essex and the deliverers they work with that inclusive and accessible spaces are created for people to find their active and experience the health benefits from whatever they discover. It could be that a new online seated exercise class or a walking group is the catalyst for improved mental and physical wellbeing.
However you prioritise your health, make sure to find and commit to something you love as you will discover the positive changes to your wellbeing that follow.

Stones over 65 Walking Football
The team have won the second division of the Essex Walking Football League in their first season.
This division included teams from Leyton Orient, Billericay Town, Chelmsford City etc. – so a great achievement from a village team of local players.
Stones played 16 league games from April to September and remained unbeaten throughout the season.
On the final day of the season Stones were 4 points behind leaders Eastwood Falcons with 4 games to play (including a game in
hand), but saving their best performance of the season until the last day, they manged 3 wins and a draw – winning the title by 4 clear points.
So, congratulations to Paul Draper, Stephen Coussens, Martin Edwards, Andy Fox, Mark Haigh, Graham Henderson, Rob Jackson and Doug Blabber who all made a magnificent contribution to winning the league and who are all looking forwarded to taking part in the top flight next season.
