Reunite with the Anglo European School on 21st June
Calling all members of our extended Anglo Family - from ex-parents, ex-students, ex-staff, to our beloved local community!
We’re thrilled to invite you to a memorable gathering where we’ll reminisce and celebrate our shared history. Explore historical artefacts from the Essex Record Office and other fascinating exhibits of our local area, generously shared by our friend and alumni, Robert Fletcher.
We are also putting together a memory wall featuring unforgettable school visits and exchanges. So, if you were a student and remember
going on a school visit or exchange, have a rummage through the loft and share your cherished memories with us by emailing enquiries@aesessex.co.uk. Let’s create something special together as we honour the journeys and experiences that have shaped our community over the years. Spread the word and mark your calendars - it’s a celebration you won’t want to miss.
This event is free, please email enquiries@aesessex.co.uk to register your attendance.
New digital support hubs in Brentwood
Four existing community hubs in Brentwood will soon offer digital support services.
These new hubs will ensure no one misses out on digital opportunities due to a lack of connectivity. They can help residents access vital support online, such as the NHS app and council services.
They come from a collaboration with Brentwood Borough Council using £10,000 of Local Community Funding.
St Peter’s Church is the first site to launch its digital hub. It can now support residents with digital devices and skills. Three more sites will add digital support to their resident offer over the coming months. These are Maple Hall, Brentwood Theatre and Ingatestone Library.
Essex County Council have helped each hub join the National Digital Inclusion
Network. This lets them provide free preloaded SIM cards through the National Databank.
They will also be able to provide free digital skills training using Learn My Way. This is an online platform that helps people gain basic digital skills.
The platform delivers bite-sized modules on topics such as creating an email account; video calling; social media; and online safety and scam awareness.
The digital hubs will also use the pilot digital triaging tool which we are rolling out in June.
Residents that might need help getting online can visit St Peter’s Church and make the most of the support.

Where to find defibrillators in Essex
A defibrillator gives a high energy shock to someone who is in cardiac arrest. It helps get the heart beating again when it has stopped.
Cardiac arrest can happen to anyone at any time. The importance of these amazing devices, and knowing where to find them, cannot be understated.
You should always call 999 and begin CPR when someone is in cardiac arrest. Do not stop CPR to find a defibrillator. If possible, send someone else to find one.
Knowing the location of your nearest defibrillator is the first step in potentially saving someone’s life. Fortunately, the British Heart Foundation has created an online Defib Finder: www.defibfinder.uk
It lists a number of defibrillator sites in Essex. It is worth familiarising yourself with those nearest to your home and place of work.
No formal training is required to use a defibrillator. Simple instructions come with every device.
The British Heart Foundation also provides comprehensive guidance about defibrillators and their usage available on www.bhf.org. uk/how-you-can-help/how-to-save-a-life/ defibrillators/understanding-defibrillatorswhat-they-are-and-how-to-use-them
Essex County Council Deputy Leader, Councillor Louise McKinlay, recently met with the East of England Ambulance service and a local resident to raise awareness around the use of defibrillators.

New funding for life-saving bleed kits
Essex County Council are funding 60 new, life-saving bleed control kits.
The kits include the materials needed to stem life-threatening bleeding following an injury. This could be a traffic accident or serious fall. They have also been used to help victims of violent crime.
ECC are working with local campaigner, Julie Taylor, to distribute the new kits. Julie’s grandson, Liam, 19, was tragically killed in Writtle in 2020. Julie set-up The Liam Taylor Legacy in his memory. The local scheme raises money to fund and distribute bleed kits across the county.
The new kits will be available at different locations and venues in Essex. These include shops, pubs and schools. Billericay Town Football Club is one of the latest businesses to receive a kit.
Funding for the new kits is one part of the council’s ongoing community safety work – they have also recently launched a new £100,000 Community Safety Initiatives Fund. Local groups can apply for grant funding to invest in initiatives that promote public safety. The aim is to benefit communities and address issues around violence and vulnerability.

Brentwood Borough Council’s Mayor opened the event
Cheeky Parker!
one
One passer-by said that they know Patrick Green does a lot to help the community, like the refill station and country music but is this an attempt to add a parking space? Another thought that maybe the driver believed that it was a drive-in coffee bar. Rumour has it that the police weren’t impressed, so we wouldn’t encourage anyone else to try it out!
New shop opens in Ingatestone
One attempt in reversing the High Street trend is a new shop called Space Brentwood, which opened on 23rd March just off Ingatestone High Street in the Old Forge (at the rear of 53 High Street). It is a high energy Pilates shop, which we believe is the first of its kind, and offers a unique approach to Reformer Pilates. Blending exercise, wellness and beauty all in one space!
It is run by Lauren and Izzy who have almost 19 years’ combined experience in the industry, and are extremely knowledgeable; in fact, founder Lauren and co-founder Izzy are experts in Pilates, HIIT, Strength Training and more.
The shop runs small intimate classes of 6, meaning you will benefit from their expertise in one-to-one relationships, while still enjoying a supportive and friendly group class environment. Call in to see them or look at their website www.spacebrentwood.co.uk

Dementia Action Week
Dementia Action Week is an awareness raising campaign. Each year, the Alzheimer’s Society works with individuals and organisations across the UK to encourage people to act on dementia. Watch out for displays in the shops along Ingatestone High Street celebrating Action Week, which runs from 13th to 19th May 2024. There will be an extra special presentation in the shop opposite Patrick Green’s (formally La Pomme) put on by Ingatestone’s Rotary Club.
Robot pets bringing joy to residents in Essex
You may never have thought that robotic pets can have a therapeutic effect. However, a pilot being undertaken by the Essex County Council adult social care team in mid Essex is demonstrating that they can.
The pets are being used to support people with learning difficulties and those with dementia.
The benefits of the pets include:
• providing company and companionship

Get your blood pressure checked
Cardiovascular disease (CVD), is a general term for conditions affecting the heart or blood vessels and causes 1 in 4 deaths in England.
High blood pressure is the largest single risk factor for CVD and can increase your risk of serious and potentially life-threatening health conditions, such as heart attacks, stroke, kidney disease and vascular dementia. However, as high blood pressure usually has no symptoms, it is estimated that 4.2 million people in England have high blood pressure without knowing it.
New data has revealed that worrying numbers don’t know the potentially fatal effects of high blood pressure – with four in 10 (41 per cent) unaware that, if left untreated, high blood pressure can lead to heart disease, and over a fifth (22 per cent) being unaware that it can cause strokes and heart attacks.
The only way to know if you have high blood pressure is to get a blood pressure test, which is a free, simple, non-invasive procedure.
If you’re aged 40 and over, you can get a free blood pressure check at your local participating pharmacy, without needing to book in advance.
Find a pharmacy that offers free blood pressure checks near you by searching “pharmacy blood pressure check” online or visit the NHS website at www.nhs.uk/conditions/blood-pressuretest

More support for unpaid Carers in Essex
Essex County Council have launched a new five-year offer for the estimated 124,000 unpaid carers in the county.
The new and enhanced offer provides information and support to unpaid carers in Essex.
A key focal point of the new offer is a central online contact point for carers run by the Essex Wellbeing Service. People can also call 0303 303 9988 for information, advice and guidance.
More specialist support will be available from Action for Family Carers in west or north Essex.
In mid or south Essex it will be Carers First. This support includes:
• help with practical solutions to address specific challenges
• support of emotional wellbeing
• connecting carers with others in their position for mutual support
Alongside this new offer, the council has allocated £1.75million to support unpaid carers of all ages, through local projects.
We have worked with carers while developing the new offer. One of the carers involved is Peter Blackman from South Woodham Ferrers (pictured).
“
Peter has been a carer for his wife for around 25 years. He explains why working with carers to develop the support available has been so important. He said:
It is really beneficial for carers to be involved in this kind of work. I feel that the council has listened to us and the ideas or concerns we have had have been heard.
“
The new offer has taken into account what carers really want and need, it is now a much more personalised service. It has been a positive experience as I believe that by being involved it will help carers to get the best possible support for their own situation. We will be keeping a close eye on how this goes, monitoring performance and continuing to be critical friends.
“If you are looking after someone, there is help and support out there for you, you are not on your own.”

Two Brentwood athletes scoop medals in Special Olympics GB’s first National Winter Games
Athletes from the South East have won a clutch of medals at the inaugural Special Olympics Great Britain National Winter Games in Folgaria, Italy.
Representing Special Olympics South East Ski Group, 12 local athletes with intellectual disabilities competed in the week-long competition (January 27th / February 3rd) that featured both alpine skiing and figure skating competitions.
Colin Dyer, chief executive of Special Olympics GB, said: “Huge congratulations go to all athletes on their success at this first National Winter Games.
“Given the daily challenges that people with intellectual disabilities face throughout their lives, it’s a great achievement to be here competing and proudly representing their region at a national sporting event, let alone winning a medal.
“Events in the Special Olympics GB movement bring together so many people and give our athletes new levels of
confidence. However, it wouldn’t be possible without the support of our Event Partners Dreams, Gallagher and Sure, along with our stable of Corporate Partners.”
Special Olympics GB is also being supported in the delivery of the National Winter Games by The Ski Company and Alpe Cimbra, whilst Inclusive Skating is leading the figure skating competitions. Across the country, Special Olympics Great Britain is the largest provider of sports training and competition for children and adults with an intellectual disability.
Operating in England, Scotland and Wales, the charity has more than 6,600 athletes benefitting from opportunities in 27 different sports, which are delivered by a devoted team of 3,800 volunteers.
The results for 2 local athletes who competed for Brentford were as follows:
