Kool Carers
Kool Carers supports young carers and their families aged 8 - 18 years in Essex’s Brentwood and Basildon boroughs, improving the life chances of young carers.
We are currently supporting 142 young carers and with their immediate families this equates to 500+ people.
We provide tailored respite youth groups, trips, counselling and advocacy for young carers and their families, in addition to offering support groups for parents/ carers and grandparents. The programmes that are facilitated are developed and designed with young carers. In addition to these programmes, we offer specialist workshops, which have included cookery, drama, film making, photography, creative writing, sports related activities including personal training and intergenerational yoga.
The vision is for young carers to be encouraged and inspired to no longer care in the shadows, but with support they will gain the confidence to have a voice and make society listen and understand the realities of their lived experiences, creating wider societal awareness.
Kool Carers works effectively in partnership with other providers to deliver personalised holistic support for young carers and their families. Our innovative work aims to improve the skills and aspirations of young carers and we campaign for change, promoting young carers’ voices and experiences.
We have won numerous awards for our work including, BBC Essex Best Community Group in Essex Award 2022, Active Essex, Active & Inclusive Award 2022, Basildon Active Award, 2022, High Sheriff’s Cup 2023 and we were highly commended at the Children and Young People Now Awards 2021 for our work in supporting young carers.

Non-Court Resolution Options
Court proceedings come at a significant financial and emotional cost. Agreed arrangements are more likely to succeed in the longer-term.
Here are some alternative options Louise Buttery at Family Law Partners can guide you through.
Arbitration
Ask an arbitrator to resolve a discrete issue, or the dispute as a whole. They will make a legally binding decision, but it avoids the delay of court proceedings.
Agreeable
Instruct the same solicitor to advise you both and work with a family consultant to deliver bespoke solutions for you.
Collaborative Law
All discussions take place with both of you and your collaboratively-trained solicitors at round-table meetings. Each of you can seek legal advice from your own solicitor whenever you wish.
Early Neutral Evaluation
Ask an experienced barrister to give an indication as to what they believe the court would consider an appropriate outcome to be.
Mediation
Narrow the issues and discuss options between you with the help of a mediator, who can give information (not legal advice) to help you agree an outcome.
Solicitor-Led Negotiation
Ask solicitors to negotiate on your behalf via correspondence, telephone discussions or round-table meetings. You remain in control - no proposals are made/accepted without your agreement.

Tree felling in Fairfield
In line with the annual tree inspection, last year IFPC arranged a survey about the condition of the trees in Fairfield, Seymour Field and at the Fryerning Cemetery.
The survey was undertaken in September 2022 by a qualified and trustworthy body and was needed to assess the state of local trees. The results came back in October 2022 where three trees that needed work had been identified – IFPC were informed that there was an unacceptable level of internal decay, precisely fungi in the roots, in two oak trees, and dead wood in a red oak which is overhanging the footway and highway.
On the day of receiving the results, IFPC contacted Cllr Lesley Wagland as the trees in question are responsibility of Essex County Council and have been maintained by ECC since their planting in 1968. The works were originally meant to commence in March, but due to wet weather were postponed.
IFPC and ECC both hold responsibility for public safety, and, though we are deeply regretful of any trees having to be cut, the decision to fell the trees was deemed as the safest solution – if they were to fall, it would affect both the property, the rail line and the main footpath to the station causing danger for residents.
Had IFPC received more advanced notice, we would have notified residents using Fairfield during the school summer holiday sooner. The area along the path has now been cleared; the orange tape near the other oak tree is still in place, and is expected to be removed, along with the cut wood.
Updates on the state of trees in Fairfield, Seymour Field and Fryerning cemetery are part of every meeting of the Facilities Committee.
During the last committee meeting, a Tree Management Policy was proposed; it was later adopted at the Full Council and can be viewed via www.ingatestonefryerningpc.gov.uk/wp-content/ uploads/2023/08/Tree-policy-2023.pdf
The next meeting of the Facilities Committee will be held on 18th September at 7:30 pm.

Anti Social Behaviour Down By 30%
Incidents of anti-social behaviour (ASB) in Essex have dropped by 31.3% in the past year, with 8,562 fewer offences recorded.
Community policing teams across the county have been working closely with councils and local partners to combat issues including nuisance vehicles, street drinking, disruptive and intimidating behaviour, and the reckless riding of bikes and e-scooters.
There were 18,771 ASB offences recorded in the year to the end of May 2023. This compares to 27,333 ASB offences over the same period 12 months earlier. In the same timeframe in 2017-18, there were 49,444 ASB incidents recorded. The most recent figures represent a 62% drop from this level.
Deputy Chief Constable Andy Prophet, who is also the NPCC lead for anti-social behaviour, said:
“From high streets to seafronts, transport hubs to parks and local housing estates – ASB is not something we should see as ‘low level’ or acceptable. It is not, it ruins lives and blights communities.
“The public should continue reporting incidents to us. Policing is one part of the solution but where it is not a policing matter, we will work with local authorities and other agencies to effectively combat ASB and the underlying causes.” Learn more about ASB and how to report it: www.essex.police.uk/advice/ advice-and-information/asb/ asb/antisocial-behaviour

NHS launches new programme to help residents to lose weight and stay healthy
Local residents are set to benefit from the launch of a new 12-week self-referral programme that is free and easy to access.
The Mid and South Essex Integrated Care Board (MSE ICB) has prioritised tackling obesity as a key factor in looking to improve the long-term health conditions of local people.
65% of adults in mid and south Essex have obesity or excess weight, which is higher than that of both East of England and England. The 12 week programme is launching initially in Thurrock where rates of adult obesity are the highest in mid and south Essex at 69.4%.
“We know that some groups and communities are more likely to be facing higher risks of ill health due to obesity, particularly younger adults in our black, Asian and ethnic communities.
“This new programme will offer a range of benefits, such as dietary advice, physical activity guidance and support to help them achieve a healthier lifestyle.
“As part of this work we hope to better understand the barriers to accessing existing support so that we can tailor future care and support.”
Dr Peter Scolding, Assistant Medical
Director at Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System.
To access the programme, participants must meet the following criteria:
• Age 18 or over.
• A BMI (Body Mass Index) greater than 30. The BMI threshold will be lowered to 27.5 for people from black, Asian, and ethnic minority backgrounds, who are at an increased risk of conditions such as Type 2 diabetes at a lower BMI.
It is easy for residents who meet the criteria to sign up, via public.wmp.nhs.uk

Unlock the Potential of Your Home: The Benefits of Equity Release
Are you a homeowner struggling with the cost-of-living crisis?
Did you know that your home could be the key to accessing a substantial amount of cash without having to sell or downsize? Equity release is a financial solution that allows homeowners aged 55 or over to tap into the value tied up in their homes while still living in them.
There are two main types of equity release schemes available: lifetime mortgages and home reversion plan… we look at some benefits below.
Financial Freedom:
One of the most significant advantages of equity release is the ability to access a tax-free lump sum or regular income. Whether you want to fund your dream retirement, support loved ones, embark on home improvements, or simply enjoy your golden years to the fullest, equity release provides the means to make those aspirations a reality.
No Repayment Worries:
Unlike traditional mortgages or personal loans, equity release plans typically do not require monthly repayments. Instead, the loan, including any interest accrued, is repaid when the homeowner passes away or moves into long-term care. This can alleviate financial stress and provide peace of mind, knowing that you can enjoy your retirement without the burden of ongoing repayments.
Flexibility to Choose:
Equity release plans offer flexibility in tailoring the release of funds to suit your specific needs. You have the freedom to take a lump sum, regular payments, or a combination of both, depending on your financial goals.
Staying in Your Home:
Equity release allows you to remain in your cherished home while unlocking its potential. You continue to live rent-free, enjoying the familiar surroundings and cherished memories you’ve built over the years; making the most of your property’s value without the need to downsize or sell.
Inheritance Protection:
Many equity release plans offer an inheritance protection feature, enabling you to ringfence a portion of your property’s value as an inheritance for your loved ones. This means you can still leave behind an inheritance while accessing the funds you need to enjoy your retirement. It’s a win-win situation that provides financial security for both you and your family.
Expert Guidance and Regulation:
To ensure the safety and well-being of homeowners, equity release is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). This regulatory oversight provides consumer protection, ensuring that equity release providers adhere to strict guidelines and operate with transparency and fairness. These products are not suitable for all house owners. Moreover, different products can offer very different benefits and costs. It is very important, therefore, that you obtain advice from an experienced product advisor and a specialist solicitor. Disclaimer:

3. Place salmon fillets in a baking dish and brush them with the teriyaki mixture.
4. Bake the salmon in the preheated oven for about 12-15 minutes, or until the salmon flakes easily with a fork.
5. While the salmon is baking, steam or blanch the broccoli florets until tendercrisp.
6. In a separate skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the steamed broccoli and sauté for 2-3 minutes to enhance the flavour.
7. Serve the teriyaki salmon over cooked quinoa, accompanied by the sautéed broccoli. Garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions.

Anglo European School
1973 – 2023 50th Anniversary.
Ingatestone County Secondary School, a product of the post-war baby boom, built with the one main teaching block which is now demolished, was completed by Spring 1959 along with most of the housing in Willow Green. The school initially took a small number of pupils from other local schools that Easter, under the Headteacher Mr L A W Moss 2. The first full intake was in September 1959. I attended the school from the First Year (Year 7) in Autumn 1964 to the Upper Sixth, leaving in July 1971 3. I can vividly remember that in my first school year, by January 1965, I think I knew the names of most of the pupils!
By 1971 the school was at risk of closure, the pupil intake having fallen for several reasons. We in the Upper Sixth were at the barricades in Summer 1971 when printing that year’s issue of Ingazette, the annual school magazine, stamping “SOS” (Save Our School) on the front cover. The County Education Committee in June 1971, had come to some agreement to try to save the school, under pressure from the Head, Staff, Governors, and Parents. Ironically, bearing in mind the events of 2016 and Brexit, the UK’s entry into the EEC in 1973 saved our local secondary/comprehensive school. We already had a small intake of European children of the employees of Ford of Europe and this may have given the
1
Education Committee the idea that such a new “European School” could be a good idea.

After all that has happened since the 40th anniversary events in 2013, with Brexit, and now the threat of ticket office closures at the station which could impact on the safety of some c500 pupils who come in by train each school day, the school remains as a focus in our village, and something, after all those fraught times in the early 1970s, to be proud of.
1. Thanks to the school and Jody Gee for permission to use the “Anglo Stars” in local history projects
2. “Mossy” had previously been the history teacher in Hertfordshire, of a certain Harry Webb (Cliff Richard), who presented our school prizes, including mine, in 1966. He was also my history teacher up to 1969 and O levels
3. My Sixth Form year from 1969 to 1971 consisted of just three pupils. I was the only pupil in the Sixth Form Art and Art History A Level class

10. An earlier version of this article, with photos, was included at the Summer Show 15 July 2023 with the IFHAS displays. I was delighted that the adjacent Ingatestone Choral Society 75th anniversary stand included references to my old music teacher at Willow Green 1964-1966, Bruce Pennick, who is now in his 90s

As a leading domestic glass replacement company for more than 16 years, Cloudy2Clear windows are the leading name in the industry. If you have a failed glass unit, it may not provide you with the protection you need or be as energy-efficient as it once was. Take a minute to check your home to see if any double glazing has failed? Taking action now can prevent future financial problems.
When talking to the Manager of Cloudy2Clear windows Chris Miller it became clear that these
values have been held dear for a number of years. Since starting the business some years ago Cloudy2Clear have remained true to their core values of supporting the local community by providing a service that saves the public money.
The Cloudy2Clear service only requires the glass to be replaced and not the whole window once the unit has failed. Chris commented “Cloudy2Clear were able to assist our community through the last savings that can be made in using our service. Unfortunately we might be going through something similar again soon and the public can rest assured that we will be there to help once again”.
