Pylons Again On the 23rd November, Alex Burghart held a public meeting in Ingatestone Community Centre to update residents on the current situation with National Grid’s proposed super pylon route that could cut across Ingatestone, Mountnessing and Hutton. Nearly 100 residents attended. Alex was supported by Louise McKinsley Deputy Leader of Essex County Council responsible for Levelling Up & Communities and also Borough Councillor for Hutton, and Lesley Wagland who is Ingatestone & Mountnessing’s County Councillor accountable for Major Infrastructure Projects and Borough Councillor for Ingatestone and Mountnessing. Alex said since our last meeting in January, all the MPs of the counties effected had joined together to question the need for this 50-meter-tall pylon route and had commissioned an independent report. This showed National Grid’s basic assumptions were wrong! In fact, the report concludes that the need for the Norwich-BramfordTilbury overhead line can be deferred by 5 years and Councillor Wagland added that the section that goes through Essex can be delayed until 2037. Councillor Wagland went on to say that the previous two consultations were informal and very soon, probably in the

spring, National Grid will launch a formal consultation and we would need to respond to that as fervently as we did over the closure of ticket offices. Which we won. She also added that the timings were very important as new technology was being developed all the time, so by the mid-2030s they may be no need for pylons (a technology that was over 100 years old already – she added). There were a number of questions, about other power sources such as mini nuclear or tidal, Alex said that he was pushing for these to be part of the solution as well. Ingatestone & District Camera Club Happy Christmas! We are an active Camera Club based in the village of Ingatestone. Our core membership is made up of both experienced photographers and those new to photography. We meet in person between September and May on Friday evenings at 8pm at the pavilion at Seymour Field, New Road, Ingatestone, CM14 0HH. Our meetings are varied with photographic competitions, talks given by both outside speakers and members, as well as practical evenings. Established members are always pleased to share their skills with others as well as being open to new ideas. The subjects of our competitions are either open or themed and can be prints (both mono and colour) or digital images. These can be taken on cameras, phones or tablets, etc. 1

2023 Fun Walk Smashes Fundraising Goals Fun walk exceeds £1.5 million raised since inception. At a special celebration evening attended by many local charities and community groups, John Baron MP shared that with the 2023 annual walk, the Fun Walk has now reached a phenomenal milestone, as the total raised since it was founded in 2002 has now exceeded £1.5 million. This year’s Fun Walk raised over £85,000 with an estimated 2,000 supporters taking part in sponsored walks across Essex. The funds will be used for a wide variety of local charities and good causes including those supporting young people, mental health, disability, environmental, educational, community sporting and advocacy groups. John Baron MP and Chair of the Fun Walk Trustees said: “I’d like to congratulate all of the Fun Walk participants who have taken the time to fundraise for their local charities and community groups. £1.5 million is a huge achievement and we are so pleased and proud to have reached this milestone. “We couldn’t have done this without the generous support of local businesses, whose donations this year allowed us to pay a 40% bonus over and above the money each organisation raised themselves. Our 2023 sponsors include Swan Housing, IFE Global Logistics, Greater Anglia, Reactive Integrated Services, Anisha Grange Care Home, Butyl Products Group, Tunnelcraft, Mr Barrie Stone and others.” SNAP Fundraising Assistant Fiona Townsend said: “Thank you so much for the bonus SNAP will be receiving from the Trust. Essex schools invited to access apprenticeship funding Essex schools can now access Essex County Council’s underspent apprenticeship levy. This can be used to offer new learning and development opportunities to teaching and non-teaching staff members. The apprenticeship levy is paid by employers with a payroll of over £3 million. It covers apprenticeship training costs and can be transferred to a non-levy payer if not used. Using the funding, schools can cover training costs for a range of apprenticeships. These include: Level 5 Operations or Departmental Manager; Level 4 Associate Project Manager; Level 2 Facilities Services Operative; Level 3 IT Solutions Technician; Level 5 Children, Young People and Families Manager; Level 2 Early Years Practitioner. By offering apprenticeships, Essex schools can expect to attract and retain highquality talent. These opportunities will also improve the quality of teaching and learning around Essex. Regardless of the apprenticeship, learners will need to spend 20% of their time on purposeful off-the-job training. This could include developing their curriculum
knowledge or shadowing another staff member.

Ingatestone Christmas Market 10th December 2023
Despite the initial rain, a bumper crowd attended Ingatestone’s Christmas Market on Sunday 10th December. Many of the popular stalls were back, Sticky Pickle, Chock Shop and others, this year there were four choirs and our tenor John Pierce, entertaining. Plenty of stalls with gifts and food, plus inside the community centre Father Christmas! Along with gifts from the Brownies and more craft stalls.
The shops along the High Street did well, with impromptu stalls around Market Place, ranging from the bus shelter acting as a champagne bar, candy floss, face painting and other stalls. Brentwood Connected supplied a giant snow globe which amused the children and inside Patrick Greens Elsa from Frozen was to be found, doing her thing for the kids and there were warming drinks for the adults at the Country Café.

Ingatestone, Fryerning Can you lip read Merry Christmas?
Certainly, the members of Ingatestone’s lip reading classes can. Just before Christmas they included in the last lesson a Christmas social, each student brought something to eat or drink and whilst enjoying the food they took time to discuss why they come to this class. The students agreed that the main reasons were that the lessons are safe, secure, supportive and our teacher, Jacqui, made it such fun! One student surprised us, saying that whilst here her hearing has got “better”! What she meant was in respect of being able to understand what is being said. Lip reading lessons give you confidence, so one lip reads automatically and that makes one’s hearing seem better. Are you, or a member of your family finding it hard to hear? Why not join one of the courses from the 15th January 2024? We’re an accommodating group and the lessons are all held at Seymour Pavilion (free parking), New Road, Ingatestone, CM4 0HH, from beginners to improvers on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and there is even a sign language class on Monday evenings. New inclusive versions of picture book series published
Essex County Council’s We Care, You Share series is designed for children receiving support from social care. Developed with children and young people, the books were written by author James Henry and illustrated by Valeria Valenza. Preheat oven to 180°C. 2. Sauté onion and garlic until softened. Add mushrooms, spinach, thyme, paprika, salt, and pepper. Cook until the moisture evaporates. 3. Stir in cooked brown rice and mix well. 4. Fill pepper halves with the mixture, top with grated cheese (if using), and bake for 25-30 minutes until peppers are tender.
Method 1. In a bowl, mix olive oil, minced garlic, lemon zest, lemon juice, parsley, salt, and pepper. Marinate chicken breasts for 30 minutes. 2. Vegan Lentil and Sweet Potato Curry Ingredients 1 tablespoon coconut oil 1 onion, diced 3 garlic cloves, minced 2 teaspoons fresh ginger, grated 2 sweet potatoes, peeled and diced 1 cup dried red lentils 400ml can coconut milk 400ml vegetable broth 2 tablespoons curry powder 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon ground turmeric Salt and pepper to taste Fresh coriander for garnish Method 1. Heat coconut oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add diced onion, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Sauté until softened. 2. Add diced sweet potatoes, red lentils, coconut milk, vegetable broth, curry powder, cumin, turmeric, salt, and pepper. Stir well. 3. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20-25 minutes until sweet potatoes and lentils are tender. 4. Adjust seasoning if needed and serve the curry hot, garnished with fresh coriander.
Baked Lemon Salmon with Asparagus Ingredients 4 salmon fillets 2 lemons (1 sliced, 1 for juice) 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 teaspoon dried dill Salt and pepper to taste 400g asparagus spears, trimmed Lemon wedges for serving Method 1. Preheat oven to 200°C. 2. Place salmon fillets on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Arrange lemon slices on top of each fillet. 3. In a bowl, mix olive oil, minced garlic, dill, juice from one lemon, salt, and pepper. Brush this mixture over the salmon. 4. Place asparagus spears around the salmon on the baking tray. Drizzle them with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. 5. Bake for 12-15 minutes until the salmon is cooked through and flakes easily with a fork, and the asparagus is tender. 6. Serve the baked lemon salmon and asparagus with lemon wedges.

Nicola is an independent art historian specialising in British art of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. She studied at the University of York and Birkbeck College, London. Formerly a curator at Tate Britain she has curated a number of exhibitions and has published widely on J.M.W. Turner, including contributions to the forthcoming online catalogue of the Turner Bequest. She is also co-editor and author of How to Paint Like Turner (Tate
Publishing, 2010). In addition, she has published on Walter Richard Sickert and is co-author of Tate’s catalogue of works by the Camden Town Group. This is the story of the epic rivalry between the two giants of British art, J.M.W. Turner and John Constable. As unlike in background and temperament as their paintings were in style, these two creative geniuses transformed the art of landscape. This lecture/study day sets them headto-head and examines their differences, their similarities, their battles and their shared triumphs. But who will ultimately be crowned star painter? As well as giving an overview of Turner and Constable, the subject provides an enjoyable overview of the British art world during the nineteenth century. Coffee/tea served from 7:30pm. Food recycling in Essex Did you know, roughly 25% of waste thrown away in the general rubbish bin is food? In the United Kingdom alone, statistics have suggested that approximately 270,000 tons of food are thrown away during the festive period, which includes Christmas. This wastage often encompasses leftover food from Christmas dinners, unused ingredients, excess packaging, and items reaching their expiration dates. Not only is this a waste of money but it’s also damaging the environment. This is why Essex County Council are working in partnership with local councils across Essex to increase the amount of food being recycled at the kerbside.
How we’re tackling food recycling rates in Essex
If you live in participating areas, you have a wheeled general rubbish bin, and a food waste recycling collection service, you may receive: • a new sticker secured to your wheeled general rubbish bin • a one-off delivery of a roll of compostable food caddy liners • an information leaflet
If your sticker has been posted through your door, please feel free to stick this on your wheeled general rubbish bin. All residents with a wheeled rubbish bin have received the sticker and your rubbish will still be collected. The sticker just acts as a gentle reminder for you and your neighbours to make the most of your food recycling service and help the environment! Over a year-long plan, we have been delivering the same items to all eligible households across Essex in three phases: • Phase one (July - August): Braintree, Colchester & Epping Forest • Phase two (September - October): Harlow, Tendring & Uttlesford • Phase three (January 2024 - February): Basildon, Maldon & Rochford The aim of this project is to reduce the amount of food thrown away in the general rubbish and encourage the use of food recycling caddies and the food recycling collection service.

Why you should recycle your food When food is sent to landfill, it doesn’t just safely breakdown. Instead, it lets off harmful greenhouse gases which contribute to climate change.
However, when food is recycled at the kerbside, it is transformed into energy and fertiliser. It’s amazing to think that recycling just six tea bags will generate enough energy to boil a kettle to make another cuppa! Disposing of food in the general rubbish is also costly. In fact, it’s costing Essex taxpayers £9 million a year to dispose of! By recycling food, you will be helping to save money that could be spent on other essential services.

What happens to the food recycled by Essex residents?
In Essex, most food recycling is collected by your local waste and recycling crews and taken to local processing plants. Anything that is not food, such as caddy liner bags or packaging, is then separated from the load. The food is then processed and transformed into a biogas that is rich in methane, and fertiliser. This biogas is used to generate energy that can be used across Essex. By using this energy, it reduces our need to use fossil fuels.

Redstones FC 60th Anniversary In 2024 Redstones Football Club from Ingatestone will be 60 years old making them one of the oldest Sunday Football Clubs in England. Redstones FC were formed in 1964 by a group of young men from Ingatestone who wanted to play organised football on a Sunday morning. For their first season of 1964/65 the Club played a series of friendlies before joining the Chelmsford Sunday Football League
at the start of the 1965/66 season. The Club are still members of the League and compete in the Premier Division. Home matches are played in Ingatestone village at Seymour Field on a Sunday morning kicking-off at 10:30am.
