Trauma Survivors Across Essex Launch Film to Improve Uptake of Cervical Screening Healthwatch Essex have launched a film produced in collaboration with our Trauma Ambassador Group showing the impact a cervical screening can have on those who live with the effects of trauma. With nearly 1 in 3 people not attending their cervical screening appointments, the Healthwatch Essex Trauma Ambassador Group (TAG) recognised a need for sharing the unique challenges that trauma survivors may experience. Working with the group, Healthwatch Essex produced a short film in a clinical environment to demonstrate the trigger-points for trauma survivors and educate professionals on how appointments can be improved to make patients more comfortable. Staff at Beacon House in Colchester kindly provided the space for an ambassador to walk through the process of a cervical screening appointment with a nurse, Michelle, demonstrating a number of trigger-points within an appointment, ranging from the language used, to the setup of the room and the often-rushed feel of an appointment. One of the main suggestions for trauma survivors from the ambassadors included holding and using the Healthwatch Essex Trauma Card. Della (pictured left) is a member of the Trauma Ambassador Group. She was instrumental in the creation of the film, and features in it: “Too often women are given scare tactics around cervical screening “you could die” type comments and data. We know that already. We need to be heard and supported and have trauma informed clinics available or a Trauma Card that is understood by practitioners.”

Sharon Westfield-de-Cortez, Healthwatch Essex Information and Guidance Manager, created the Trauma Ambassador Group. She said: “We understand that everyone is unique, and that other factors may influence people’s feelings around the screening process, such as having experienced domestic abuse or female genital mutilation, and that these can create additional barriers. We would encourage anyone in this situation to contact the surgery or clinic they will be accessing to request a conversation about this prior to the procedure, so that they can ask the questions you need to and receive appropriate reassurance. Update from New Folly Surgery 23 October 2023 We are happy to report we now have what we term as a full clinical team again comprising 2 GP Partners, 3 Salaried GPs, a Physicians Associate and 3 Practice Nurses, of which one is coming to the end of year 1 of her Advanced Clinical Practitioner Course. We also have our excellent Clinical Pharmacist Nikita who covers a wide area of Medicines Management work. Pauline retired in September and was good enough to help us out at both the recent Saturday Flu Open Days and the odd locum session. We are lucky to have ex District Nurse, now Practice Nurse Sue Rogers on the team. We aim to open up the Travel Flu Clinics again close to the end of the year as the Nurses have qualified in their training but need some GP supervision as part of the overall course. We also expect to take back doing our own Extended Hours clinics which we had to give back to the GP hub, ACE Limited earlier in the year due to manning issues. We have new Anglia Ruskin University medical students with us again 2 days a week from the end of the year as part of our official medical student training programme. We also have a new Physicians Associate student with us early in 2024, similar to the medical student programme. Along with the rest of the NHS and Primary Care, we went live on 31st October with the “Access to Clinical Records (Prospective)”

programme; this means for those patients with online access or those who wish to have online access, they will be able to read and see their patient notes and letters going forward from 31st October as part of the full role out of this UK wide programme. We have our bi-annual Safeguarding Audit at the end of November where a number of the staff are working hard, engaged in reviewing all the wider areas of adult and child safeguarding procedures and policies. All our staff are trained from Levels 1 to 3 in Adult and Child Safeguarding as part of the induction process which led to a Safeguarding Awareness and Training afternoon on Tuesday 7th November at an NHS/ICB Time to Learn Session. Finally, ACE Limited our GP hub in Brentwood are completing their housebound flu and covid booster vaccination visits as well as vaccinating the residents of Ardtully Care Home. They are also putting on the Sunday COVID vaccination clinics for those in the risk categories to have booked appointments at the Brambles Clinic in the old Highwood Hospital grounds.

Search and Rescue Dog Bailey special feature in a book for Dogs Trust A Search and Rescue Dog from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service (ECFRS), specialising in live scent search has been featured in The Little Dog That Laughed book for the Dogs Trust. Being described as unruly, untrainable, and unsociable, Bailey was taken in by the Dogs Trust in Loughborough back in 2021.

After spending some time with Bailey, the team at the Dogs Trust saw that he had potential. The charity contacted the UK International Search and Rescue (UKISAR) and other services to ask if anyone was looking for a new search dog.

A spokesperson from the Dogs Trust said: “From the first time Bailey arrived at Dogs Trust Loughborough, it was clear that he was destined for greatness.

Graham Currie, who is a Watch Manager and Dog Handler for the Service said: “I’d been looking for a dog for just under a year when I saw the plea from the Dogs Trust. So, I went up to Loughborough the following day to see what Bailey was like. “After testing his drive for a tennis ball and checking he had no aggression towards other dogs or people, I offered to take him on a six-week trial.” Now two years on, Graham describes Bailey as the most natural search and rescue dog, and his inspiring story has been featured in The Little Dog that Laughed book for the Dogs Trust. Graham adds: “Bailey was quite a handful to begin with, as he had little to no training and was very head strong. “The biggest challenge was, as I call them now his ‘Fenton moments’, chasing rabbits or deer and disappearing over the horizon. But some Primula cheese spread, and a lot of patience has seen Bailey turn his life around. “This year Bailey achieved his full license, not just for the UK but for UK International Search and Rescue too. His training is always continuing to ensure he stays at the top of his game.

New interactive toolkit to inspire intergenerational connections Essex County Council have launched a new resource looking to inspire ideas for bringing different generations together. The Essex Age-Friendly Collaborative Toolkit showcases projects which have been building intergenerational connections across Essex. It explains the positive outcomes which these have achieved. It features Memory Cafes in libraries, virtual reality technology projects and more. It is designed to inspire groups in Essex to come up with their own ideas for intergenerational activity. Bringing different age groups together helps build care and compassion in communities. The toolkit shares a range of age-friendly activities that have been making a difference in Essex. It also explains how groups can get involved themselves. Councillor John Spence, Cabinet Member for Health, Adult Social Care and ICS Integration, said: “By helping people of all ages and backgrounds to come together, everyone can have their life enriched.

“Young can learn and be inspired by old, while older generations can have spirits uplifted, memories refreshed and learning enhanced from those in younger age-groups. “The excellent examples highlighted in the toolkit show how this can be achieved and we hope it inspires organisations and communities across Essex to get involved in the intergenerational movement.” Councillor Tony Ball, Cabinet Member for Education Excellence, Lifelong Learning and Employability, said: “Children and young people coming together with older people in their community, has numerous benefits. The Arts Society Brentwood District 2023-2024

‘Membership of the Arts Society Brentwood District has been a lifeline’, is a sentiment frequently expressed by members attending meetings. The warm welcome, plentiful supply of tea/coffee, biscuits and attractive raffles together with stimulating and entertaining illustrated talks all cater to our growing membership. Forthcoming sessions include ‘Turner versus Constable: the great British paint-off’ (17th January), ‘The Glories of Anglo-Saxon England’ (21st February) and ‘Treasures of Prague’ (20th March). Ingatestone Community Cinema Phantom of The Open – 14th December The remarkable true story of Maurice Flitcroft, who managed to gain entry to the 1976 British Open qualifying, despite never playing a round of golf before. ‘The Phantom Of The Open’ is an uplifting and moving comedy drama about pursuing your dreams and shooting for the stars, no matter what hand you’re dealt. The doors open at 2pm with the film starting at 2:30pm. Tickets are £4.00 for IFCA members and £6.00 for non-members and can be purchased from the IFCA office or call 01277 352064. Office opening hours are 10am to 1pm, Monday to Thursday.

Ingatestone, Fryerning Healthwatch Essex raise awareness of the dangers of nitrous oxide balloons

In their Hidden Voices podcast, Healthwatch Essex recently released an episode concerning the worrying trend of nitrous oxide/balloons. This podcast captures stories and experiences across health and social care that we are less likely to hear, no topic is off limits, and issues that are less talked about and explored are the focus with an aim to understand them more. Titled “Don’t Follow This Path – Addiction to Balloons” this episode we hear Josh tell his story about being addicted to nitrous oxide balloons, the side effects and dangers involved and how it has affected his life. This will fund a pilot to recruit, vet, train and deploy six Transport Safety Officers (TSOs) across Greater Essex. TSOs are specially trained staff who deal with low-level nuisance and disorder. They will patrol targeted routes and locations, working in coordination with Essex Police and the British Transport Police. The initiative is also supported by the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Essex, Roger Hirst. The areas in Essex which will be covered are: • Basildon train and bus stations • Chelmsford train and bus stations • Colchester train station • Clacton train station The pilot in Essex is being implemented following the successful roll out of a TSO scheme by Transport for West Midlands. New Transport Safety Officers for Essex

Front-line safety officers will be rolled out in Essex to help stamp out anti-social behaviour on public transport. As part of a partnership including Thurrock Council and Southend-on-Sea City Council, Essex County Council have been awarded £490,000 by the Department for Transport (DfT).

DigiGo will cost no more than £2 for a single fare until the end of next year. The on-demand public transport service lets Essex residents pre-book shared minibuses through the TravelEssex app. Users have enjoyed up to 75% off travel since the government’s Bus Fare Cap Grant began in 2021. £250 million is being put into physical activities to tackle place inequality across England. Sport England announced its investment from Canvey Island. Fire Service issues charging safety advice for Electrical Fire Safety month

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service (ECFRS) is issuing charging safety advice ahead of Electrical Fire Safety month. In the last 12 months, ECFRS have been called to 267 fires, all which have been started by an electrical device or charger. Temporary Head of Live Safe, Andrea MacAlister said: “Sadly, this year we have seen several serious incidents, nationally and regionally, which have resulted in fatalities due to charging issues. “There are a number of things you can do to avoid having a fire while you charge your devices. For example, not leaving items on charge unattended overnight and

19 continuously for long periods of time. “When you are charging a device, making sure it’s on a flat, solid and stable surface rather than your bed or under your pillow. It’s also a good idea to check if your charger is hot which means it’s probably time to replace with a new one from a genuine supplier. “The best advice we can give you is to make sure you have smoke alarms on every level of your property. Apply now for 2024 primary school places

Primary school applications are now open for 2024. Children can start primary school in the September after their fourth birthday. Parents and carers of children born between 1st September 2019 and 31st August 2020 need to apply. Applications are open from Monday 6th November, until Monday 15th January. This is the national closing date. Applications received after 15th January will be considered after on time applications. This means applying late could reduce the chance of getting a place at a preferred school. Councillor Tony Ball, Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Education Excellence, Lifelong Learning and Employability, said: Starting school for the first time marks an exciting milestone in a child’s life and we want to ensure the application process is as smooth as possible for parents and carers. Record Breaking Winter Artisan Market

Held on Saturday 11th November, this year’s winter Artisan Market attracted nearly 1,240 attendees! A record over last year’s 1,100. Again, there were some 20 craft stalls inside the Community Centre and 7 outside, with musicians playing outside. The stalls were very busy with all the stall holders saying they had a good day and wanted to be back for the next Artisan Market. Ingatestone Artisan is especially designed to include the shops along Ingatestone High Street and they too reported a record day – very much needed in these days of online retail.

Many shoppers said it was the fact they could see and feel the goods they were buying that was important to them, they also liked how they felt shop keepers looked after them and made them feel special. Ingatestone High Street has some many independent shops, as well as 11 cafes, restaurants, pubs and a wine bar, many of these stayed open until late with shoppers.

Ingatestone Remembrance Sunday 12th November 2023 On a wet and grey Sunday, Ingatestone held its annual parade and service to remember and honour members of the Armed Forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their country. It started from the library and marched down to St. Edmund and St Mary’s Church, dodging road works that had appeared overnight and considerable traffic on diversion from the A12. Bravely halted for the parade by members of the community.

The parade contained contingents from the Scouts and Guides, Parish Council, local schools and local charitable organisations. The priest in-charge, Canon Lee FrancisDehqani, gave a sermon stressing forgiveness and that we should never forget those who gave their lives so we could live ours. PHOTO CREDIT Freddie Norton

After the service wreaths were laid at the War Memorial, firstly the Rainbows and then by the others, there was two minutes silence followed by a final prayer.

Festive Turkey and Cranberry Pockets Ingredients 350g turkey mince 1/2 onion, finely chopped 1 garlic clove, minced 100g cranberry sauce 1 teaspoon dried sage Salt and pepper, to taste 1 pack of ready-made puff pastry 1 egg, beaten, for glazing Festive-shaped cookie cutters

Vegetarian Recipe: Christmas Tree Veggie Platter Ingredients A variety of colourful veggies (e.g., bell peppers, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, carrots, celery) Hummus or dip of your choice Edible glitter or coloured sugar (optional) Wooden skewers

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (180°C fan). 2. In a pan, sauté the chopped onion and minced garlic until soft. 3. Add turkey mince and cook until browned. Drain any excess liquid. 4. Stir in cranberry sauce, dried sage, salt, and pepper. Simmer for a few minutes. 5. Roll out the puff pastry and use festiveshaped cookie cutters to create shapes. 6. Spoon the turkey mixture onto half of the pastry shapes. 7. Place another pastry shape on top and seal the edges by pressing with a fork. 8. Brush with beaten egg for a golden finish. 9. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Serve as festive pockets. Method 1. Wash and prepare the veggies by cutting them into bite-sized pieces. 2. Thread the veggie pieces onto wooden skewers, creating colourful combinations. 3. Assemble the skewers in the shape of a Christmas tree on a platter. 4. Place a small dish of hummus or dip at the base of the “tree” as a decorative tree trunk. 5. For extra festive sparkle, sprinkle edible glitter or coloured sugar over the veggies (optional). 6. Serve this fun and healthy Christmas tree veggie platter as a snack or appetizer.

In a food processor, combine rolled oats, dried cranberries, and orange zest. Pulse until finely chopped. 2. Add maple syrup, almond butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Blend until the mixture comes together. 3. Roll the mixture into bite-sized balls. 4. Roll each ball in desiccated coconut to coat. 5. Chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes to set. 6. Serve these festive energy balls as a healthy and delightful Christmas snack.

Christmas Chocolate Yule Log Ingredients 4 large eggs 100g caster sugar 65g plain flour 25g cocoa powder 300ml double cream 100g dark chocolate, chopped Icing sugar, for dusting Festive decorations (e.g., edible holly leaves, snowflakes) Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan). 2. In a bowl, whisk eggs and caster sugar until thick and pale. 3. Sift in the plain flour and cocoa powder, then fold gently. 4. Line a baking tray with parchment paper and spread the mixture evenly. 5. Bake for 10-12 minutes until springy. 6. Lay a clean tea towel on a work surface, dust with icing sugar, and turn the sponge onto it. 7. Gently roll the sponge with the tea towel and leave to cool. 8. Unroll, spread with whipped double cream, and scatter with chopped dark chocolate. 9. Roll up again and decorate with festive decorations. 10. Dust with icing sugar before serving.

History of Hot Chocolate With the colder weather drawing in, there are few things cosier than snuggling up on a dark evening with a hot drink. Whatever your tipple of choice, a perennial favourite for young and old has to be hot chocolate, and with good reason – it’s a drink that has been around for thousands of years and remains as popular now as it ever was. However, the hot chocolate we know today is very different to its original form, and drinking the earliest recipe might seem more of a chore than a comfort for modern consumers. It was the Mayans, around 3,000 years ago, who started drinking ground up cocoa seeds in a concoction with cornmeal, water, and chili. This cocoa, called xocōlātl, was drunk cold, and was an important part of Aztec culture, with some wealthy Mayans choosing to be buried with their cocoa drinking vessels. When the Spanish began invading Mexico in the early 1500s, the conquistador Henan Cortez discovered cocoa beans and brought them back home with him. In Spain the recipe changed, and the drink began to be served hot and sweet, and it became very popular among Spanish nobility. For many years it remained thefavourite drink of the Spanish court, but gradually news spread across Europe, gaining more fans among French royalty, with Marie Antoinette loving it so much she had her own personal chocolatier. By the 1700s, chocolate had arrived in England, and chocolate houses – the 18th Century forerunner to Starbucks – sprang up in cities around the country. The hot chocolate served here was a luxury item, rich and heavily spiced, and the decadence of the drink sometimes encouraged similarly decadent behaviour, with chocolate houses becoming infamous as hotbeds of crime, vice, and political resistance.

A notable ingredient sometimes added to chocolate at this time was ambergris, a waxy substance produced in the digestive system of sperm whales. Aged ambergris has a sweet smell, and as well as its culinary uses, it was also used in making perfumes and medicines. Chocolate changed rapidly over the course of the next century, with 1828 seeing the invention of the cocoa press to produce cocoa powder, and in 1847, the British company J.S. Fry & Sons created the first chocolate bar. In the 1870s, Swiss chocolatiers Daniel Peter and Henri Nestlé added powdered milk to cocoa to produce the very first milk chocolate bar, and in America Milton Hershey brought out his Hershey milk chocolate bars in 1900. The evolution of hot chocolate is saga enough to impress Charles Darwin, and it’s fascinating to think that the thousands of people enjoying their comfort drinks this winter are taking part in a tradition that stretches back through so many centuries.
