Meet the Governors On Saturday 23rd September, at Ingatestone Library Brentwood’s elected governors for our local hospitals, Dr Eric Watts and Martyn Hart held a public surgery. Hospital governors represent the interests of the public in how our hospitals are run. They met 12 people and the main concerns were: Buses to the acute hospitals (Basildon, Chelmsford and Southend) one person pointing out that it takes 2.5 hours each way if you need to go from Ingatestone, Mountnessing or Margaretting to Basildon Hospital! A number mentioned the confusion over where blood tests should take place and missing appointment letters. Also 3 people asked what was happening about Brentwood Community Hospital as it seems to be getting emptier. A suggestion was made that the Chelmer Park & Ride should be extended to Broomfield.
A&E was remarked on as excellent twice (one even suggested outstanding!). All said their experiences of clinical procedures was very good once they got to have them. There were numerous comments about Stoma bag training, where a patient has had to stay longer in hospital because the specialist training nurse was not available. 5 people mentioned this, others talked about similar experiences for Pelvic Floor muscle training (piles). Some suggested that perhaps such training could be carried out before the operations? We took all the points away and we will bring them up at the appropriate Governors meetings. Hopefully we can make a difference.

Host of initiatives recognised in 2023 health and care awards for mid and south Essex teams Innovative ways of working are making a real difference for patients in mid and south Essex and are catching the eye of judges as this years’ awards season gets under way. Partners in Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System have won and been recognised in multiple awards in recent weeks for work that is making a real difference to our communities. The Innovate Awards which are run by the Academic Health Science Network (AHSN) and the NHS Confederation, held Thursday 21st September saw Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System win Innovative Health System of the Year. Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust also won the ‘Diversity in Innovation Award. “The growing number of people living longer and with long-term conditions is leading to ever-increasing demands on health and care services. Continued innovation is vital to enable us to meet these demands and continue to offer patients the support they need to live well. “I’m very proud that within mid and south Essex we are at the forefront of some of these developments and that the hard work of teams within our health and care services is being recognised.”

Essex set to extend residual waste disposal contracts Essex County Council is seeking cabinet approval to extend its current residual (black bag) waste disposal contracts by a year, to the end of March 2025. The extension comes in the wake of a tender earlier this year for a Medium-Term Residual Waste Treatment contract for which there were no compliant bids. The tender for Essex County Council’s contract for Medium-Term Residual Waste Treatment will continue to be progressed and will be relaunched in January 2024, the Council has announced. The council will continue to engage with the market in coming months ahead of the launch of the new tender in January.
“We will use the next few months to work with potential bidders to develop the final drafting and make the contract as appealing as possible, allowing sufficient time for a thorough procurement process. “I would encourage all residents to have their say on the proposed longer-term plans for waste management in Essex by taking part in the current consultation.” Residual waste in Essex is currently being sent to landfill. The council aims to send zero waste to landfill by 2030.
A new long-term draft Waste Strategy for Essex was unveiled earlier this month by the Essex Waste Partnership and is currently out for consultation.

The consultation closes on 22nd November 2023. Councillor Peter Schwier, Climate Czar and Cabinet Member for Environment, Waste Reduction and Recycling said: “We hope to continue working with our current waste disposal contractors in the short term, while we run our tender for medium-term arrangements in the new year. “I would like to thank potential bidders for the medium-term tender for their patience and we look forward to further engaging with them in coming months. “

The surgery recently said a fond farewell to Pauline Ensor, our very long serving Practice Nurse who retires after a combined 53 years working in Essex Hospital settings and latterly 35 years at our Surgery. Sue comes from a local District Nursing background and will be upskilling herself to provide the full range of services that our nursing team offer. Sue looks forward to widening her career with us in Primary Care. Finally, we welcome Priya Sharma as our new Physicians Associate. Priya has a good level of experience in her clinical field from previous work in the outer London area and will be able to support the full clinical team with a wide range of services. She replaces Dexter who left us in July.
Mountnessing Senior Citizens Club
This club has been running since 1985 in Mountnessing Village Hall. It’s open to
everyone regardless of its name, and every new member will be made very welcome. We meet every second and fourth Thursday of the month at 2pm where we enjoy bingo, raffle and an easy quiz. But most important we enjoy chatting over a cuppa, where friends get together and new friends are made. Ingatestone Litter Pick – 14th October 2023 Around 20 people, Parish and Borough Councillors, members of the public, boys and girls volunteered for the Litter Pick. The Parish Council provided black rubbish bags, pickers, high visibility jackets and gloves. Paul Jeater the Chairman of the Parish Council, allocated areas for each picker or teams of pickers to go to.
However, Borough Councillor Hugh Gorton had the fullest bag, almost too heavy to lift, most of which he picked up at the other side of the A12 at the bottom of Little Hythe Lane.
Some 25 bags of rubbish were collected, but many pickers commented on how the streets and alleys were clean, compared to last time, with cigarette ends the most common form of rubbish.
The Parish Council thanked all the volunteers for doing a great job and Ingatestone’s Community Centre for arranging the collection of the rubbish bags.

Autumn Harvest Chicken Casserole Ingredients 4 bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 carrots, sliced 2 parsnips, sliced 2 cups butternut squash, cubed 1 cup Brussels sprouts, halved 2 cups chicken broth 1 teaspoon dried thyme Salt and pepper, to taste Fresh parsley, for garnish
Butternut Squash and Chickpea Curry Ingredients 1 butternut squash, peeled and cubed 1 can (400g) chickpeas, drained and rinsed 1 onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 can (400ml) coconut milk 2 tablespoons curry paste (adjust to your spice preference) 1 tablespoon olive oil Salt and pepper, to taste Fresh cilantro, for garnish Cooked rice, for serving
Method 1. Preheat your oven to 180°C 2. In an ovenproof skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Season chicken thighs with salt and pepper and sear until golden brown on both sides. Remove from the pan and set aside. 3. In the same pan, add chopped onion and garlic. Sauté until softened. 4. Add carrots, parsnips, butternut squash, and Brussels sprouts. Cook for a few minutes until they start to brown. 5. Return the chicken to the pan and add chicken broth and dried thyme. 6. Cover the skillet and transfer it to the preheated oven. Bake for about 30-35 minutes until the chicken is cooked through and the vegetables are tender. 7. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving. Method 1. In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and garlic, sauté until softened. 2. Stir in curry paste and cook for a minute. 3. Add butternut squash and chickpeas, stir to coat with the curry paste. 4. Pour in coconut milk and simmer until the squash is tender, about 20-25 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. 5. Serve over cooked rice, garnished with fresh coriander.

How animals are changing lives in Essex Horses, dogs, goats and many other animals are all playing their part in projects to improve and enhance the health and well-being of people in Essex. Whether it is a wheelchair user feeling freedom through horse riding, a donkey visiting people in hospice care, someone in a care home cuddling a greyhound or a teenager with anxiety building confidence by working with creatures great and small, there is no doubt about the therapeutic power of being with animals. Spending time with any animal can help reduce feelings of loneliness and stress, overcome trauma and make a positive difference to mental health. Animals provides comfort and distraction to those who may be feeling low and can also be a benefit to anyone with social barriers, including people with learning disabilities or autism. Essex Community Foundation (ECF), the independent charitable trust which distributes around £4.5 million in grants to local charities each year, has supported a wide range of voluntary organisations with projects that utilise animals to improve the lives of local people. An example of this… Barrow Farm Riding for the Disabled provides riding and carriage driving to 120 disabled children and adults every week.
The charity is a purpose-built riding centre in rural Essex, between Chelmsford and Brentwood, making riding accessible for people who may otherwise be unable to learn. Anne Mitchell, Trustee, whose family founded the charity, said:” Spending time with horses and ponies is proven to help improve both mental and physical health and well-being. For many of our participants the time spent at Barrow Farm may be the only exercise, and time spent in a countryside environment that they get. For them, learning a new skill builds confidence and self-esteem and the chance to make new friends. I see the benefits every day from the smiles on their faces and from the pride of their parents watching their riders achieve.” One parent said: “Riding at Barrow Farm has increased my son’s core strength, his balance and his coordination. It has also helped hugely his social and emotional well-being. It has been a real game changer, not only for him but for our whole family.”

The charity has been able to employ a part-time riding coach, thanks to a grant of £6,000 from ECF. Research shows that: • Spending time with animals increases levels of serotonin and dopamine, promoting calm and relaxation • Owners of pets are less likely to have depression • Pets improve the quantity and quality of socialisation, providing conversation points • Hugging and stroking an animal provides almost immediate relief from stress and anxiety

‘Membership of the Arts Society Brentwood District has been a lifeline’, is a sentiment frequently expressed by members attending meetings. Having recently moved into the village a couple of years ago I stumbled across the Ingatestone Bowls Club and found not only a new great game to play in the fresh air and something I really enjoyed doing, but I also met a great bunch of guys and ladies who were so welcoming. This must be the best kept secret in and around Ingatestone. Even as a beginner there was great fun to be had plus plenty of coaching. I would whole heartedly recommend anybody who wants to get out of the house and meet new friendly locals (who don’t bite) to pop up to the club behind the Tennis club at the Community Centre in the High Street OR have a look at the website. www.ingatestonebowlingclub.co.uk
