A Greeting from the President...

Dear Alumni, Community Members and Friends of KC, As the leaves of the trees begin to change color and the fall season approaches, I am hoping you had a wonderful summer and are preparing for the approaching holiday season. This message is to carry greetings from the Kaskaskia College family to you and yours, and to update you on the very exciting and encouraging undertakings ongoing at KC. We are very pleased to announce that Kaskaskia College is currently in the 2nd consecutive semester of increased enrollments. This past year, we have strategically sharpened our focus on doing what we do best: teach. Providing high quality and affordable education is what we strive for. We have many strong qualities at Kaskaskia College, and I wish to share with you just a few of the many positive things that have occurred the past year: • For the 2nd year in a row, KC was selected as the #2 Community College in Illinois by Wallethub. com.

• For the first time ever, Illinois Community Colleges were ranked #1 in the nation for baccalaureate completion percentage of community college transfer students.

• The Kaskaskia College Foundation continues to foster and assist our students, as the Foundation awarded close to $250,000 in scholarships last year!

• For the 11th consecutive year, Kaskaskia College was recognized as a military friendly institution of higher learning.

• 39 student athletes received Academic All American Honors by the NJCAA. • Kaskaskia College continues to work with area partners such as the VANDALIA ONE PROJECT, whose overall goal is to improve the quality of life in the Fayette County area, as well as we continue to work with SCIGA (South Central Illinois Growth Alliance) to promote awareness to our public of the critical skills gap in the vocational trades and to highlight the lucrative career opportunities associated with these trades.

I am very proud of the staff and faculty of Kaskaskia College, as they work tirelessly to provide our students with the skills and knowledge they need to be successful in their lives.

In closing, we offer this report to the community as an update and booklet for all that has happened, or is happening at our premiere institution. We hope you enjoy this update, because after all we are your community college!

ACCREDITATION Kaskaskia College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (hlcommission.org), a regional accreditation agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Accreditation certifies the education provided by KC meets national standards, and ensures students are obtaining a quality education. Several of KC’s programs have institutional accreditation for the same purpose, to show future employers these programs are meeting the highest industry standards, thus making our graduates highly marketable for future employment.

DUAL CREDIT - A VALUABLE SERVICE TO STUDENTS! Each year hundreds of area high school students and their parents save hundreds of thousands of dollars in college tuition costs through Kaskaskia College’s Dual Credit Program. Through this program, high school students earn high school and college credit while still in high school. Kaskaskia College is one of the few remaining institutions in Illinois that waives tuition and fees for dual credit courses. Studies show that students who earn dual credit while still in high school are more likely to be successful in their post secondary studies.

ILLINOIS ARTICULATION INITIATIVE In 1993, the Illinois Board of Higher Education, the Illinois Community College Board, and the Transfer Coordinators of Illinois Community Colleges and Universities brought together faculty from public, independent, associate, and baccalaureate degree-granting institutions across the state, to develop the Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI). The IAI includes a statewide general education package, the IAI General Education Core Curriculum (GECC). Completion of this package fulfills the lower-division general education requirements for any participating institution, which eases a student’s transfer from one participating community college or university to another. In addition, the IAI includes recommendations for students wanting to study in a particular major, but are unsure as to where they might complete a baccalaureate degree.

Additionally, to further improve articulation, transfer, and reduce the overall cost and excess academic credit hours taken by students, the Illinois General Assembly passed the Higher Education Articulation Act in 2017 (P.A. 99-636).

This Act requires all public community colleges and universities to participate in the IAI

statewide transfer agreement, which ensures transfer of general education and core major courses. These courses are transferable among more than 100 participating community colleges and universities in Illinois.

It is through the IAI that all public community colleges and universities are equal partners in providing the first two years of baccalaureate degree programs in Illinois, which ultimately saves students money and time to degree completion.

“I graduated high school in 1993 knowing I wanted to pursue a career in chiropractic. Kaskaskia College was an instrumental step in that process. Prior to enrolling at Kaskaskia College, I coordinated with Logan College of Chiropractic and the counselor at KC to determine which prerequisites I would need to transfer so I could obtain my Bachelor of Science in Human Biology degree at Logan prior to entering the Doctor of Chiropractic program. I was able to attend Kaskaskia College for 2 years as a full-time student taking classes both on campus and at satellite centers, while working 3 part time jobs. I was blessed with affordable tuition, the ease of commute, and the flexibility to work and earn money while living at home. While I knew Logan College of Chiropractic was going to be a huge investment in time and money, I was also fortunate enough to enroll at Logan without any student loan debt. I had classmates at Logan transferring from a four year University with over $100,000 in student loan debt even prior to the additional $140,000 in student loan debt that many of us were about to incur.

In addition to KC being a part of my educational process, the college has certainly been an asset to my business as well. I currently work with instructors at the college for job placement to employ students enrolled or graduating from the college. We have been very fortunate to work directly with the instructors of the Physical Therapy Assistant program to help with job placement by offering part-time employment for students currently enrolled in the program. These students are able to gain experience in the field while having an income to help offset educational costs. The administration at KC has been a great resource to network with and works tirelessly to help fulfill the needs of small businesses in the community. The Kaskaskia College district comprises all or part of nine counties in southern and central Illinois, covering 2,231 square miles with approximately 130,000 residents. The main campus is located outside Centralia, Illinois with education and extension centers providing services in Greenville, Nashville, Salem, Trenton, and Vandalia. KC serves approximately 7,500 individuals annually through credit and noncredit courses, as well as adult education classes. KC also provides credit and noncredit contract training to assist business and industry.

FOUNDATION INITIATIVES KASKASKIA COLLEGE’S WINTER GALA, “PLAY AMONG THE STARS”

Saturday, December 8, 2018 at Hidden Lake Winery - Aviston. This event is being held to specifically raise funds to assist KC students in need.

KC FOUNDATION AFTER SCHOOL COLLEGE PROGRAM

This program is supported by the KC Foundation to help offset dual credit offerings to area high schools that were lost due to the faculty credentialing change administered by the Higher Learning Commission.

COMMITTED TO GROWING THE DISCRETIONARY SCHOLARSHIP FUND

This fund was established with the intent of assisting students nearing the end of their schooling at Kaskaskia College who need financial help with college expenses.

COMMITTED TO GROWING THE SPECIAL ASSISTANCE FUND

This fund supports students who find themselves needing assistance beyond books and tuition costs. This fund helps with car expenses, bus tokens, cafeteria tokens, childcare expenses, course-related supplies, etc.

THE KASKASKIA COLLEGE FRIENDS OF THE FINE ARTS believes the arts play a vital role in the general campus

life of the college, in the lives of district residents and their communities and in the lives of students participating in arts education. The Friends organization supports all of these groups through touring artist events, student scholarships, student enrichment grants, special capital projects, and visual arts activities.

In recent years, the Friends organization has successfully led efforts to restore the College’s Steinway concert grand piano and to extend the depth of the auditorium stage to accommodate the music department’s growing ensembles as well as larger professional touring acts. The group has also awarded numerous scholarships and cash grants for students to travel and experience professional theatre, art, and music.

THE KASKASKIA COLLEGE SPORTS ASSOCIATION is celebrating its 15th year of existence and have proudly raised over $1,200,000 for the KC Athletic Programs. The KCSA’s current focus is on athletic facility beautification with plans to make drastic changes to the Kaskaskia College Gymnasium in the next two years with new gym wall padding and scoreboards.

The KCSA continues to hold several fund raisers throughout the year including their Annual Par-3 Golf Tournament, the sale of team schedule posters, and a large trivia night held each spring.

KCSA coordinator, Cathy Karrick, continues to also oversee an athletic letter writing campaign that consistently brings in over $25,000 each year to the organization.

THE KASKASIA COLLEGE ALUMNI AND FRIENDS is committed to several initiatives in the coming year to benefit

KC. These plans include raising funds to purchase benches, gazebos, and custom designed boulders to be placed around the campus to create a more student friendly, comfortable atmosphere. Alumni and Friends are also committed to provide additional scholarship opportunities for students, as well as help provide funds for those who need assistance beyond books and tuition.

One way the association does this is through its annual Valentine’s Day Dinner & Dance. This year’s dance is scheduled for Saturday, February 9, 2019 at Bretz Wildlife & Winery in Carlyle.
