A GREETING FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, I hope this salutation finds you in good health and prosperity! I am both energized and incredibly enthusiastic by all that has taken place this past year and all that lies ahead for Kaskaskia College. In a year marked with several achievements, continued innovation and enrollment growth, we have expanded upon established traditions and added some new ones as well. We have much to look forward to at KC. As was reported last year, KC continues to “buck the trend” of enrollment declines in higher education, as we are very pleased to announce that Kaskaskia College is currently in the 5th consecutive semester of increased enrollments. Providing high quality and affordable education is what we strive for. We have many strong qualities at Kaskaskia College, and I wish to share with you just few of the many positive things that have occurred the past year: •

For the 3rd year in a row, KC was selected as the #2 Community College

in Illinois by Wallethub.com.

The past year Kaskaskia College has increased its transfer agreements with

four-year universities from 39 to 149!

•

The Kaskaskia College Nursing Program and Allied Health Programs achieved an average 94% percentile passage rate on their state

licensure examinations!

•

The college celebrated the ribbon cutting of the grand opening of the Kaskaskia College Veteran and Military Family Service Center.

•

Twenty-six student athletes received Academic All-American Honors by the NJCAA.

•

The KC Men’s Basketball team won their regional tournament and represented KC at the NJCAA National Tourney in

Hutchison, Kansas.

•

The KC Men’s Tennis team qualified for nationals in Tucson, Arizona!

•

Kaskaskia College continues to work with area partners such as the VANDALIA ONE PROJECT, whose overall goal is to improve

the quality of life in the Fayette County area, as well as we continue to work with SCIGA (South Central Illinois Growth Alliance)

to promote awareness to our public of the critical skills gap in the vocational trades and to highlight the lucrative career

opportunities associated with these trades.

I am very proud of the staff and faculty of Kaskaskia College, as they work tirelessly to provide our students with the skills and knowledge they need to be successful in their lives. They truly are a family and I am humbled to work side by side with them.

In closing, we offer this report to the community as an update for all that has happened, or is happening at our premiere institution. I hope to see you on campus soon. At KC there is something for everyone, so please come and visit, take in a ballgame, attend a concert, watch one of our amazing theatrical productions or simply just stop by to say hi. Kaskaskia College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (hlcommission.org), a regional accreditation agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Accreditation certifies the education provided by KC meets national standards, and ensures students are obtaining a quality education. Several of KC’s programs have institutional accreditation for the same purpose, to show future employers these programs are meeting the highest industry standards, making our graduates highly marketable for future employment.

A MILITARY FRIENDLY INSTITUTION! Kaskaskia College staff and faculty members give back to our troops! As a prime example, this past year the entire campus gathered and shipped several care packages and KC swag to Technical Sergeant Ian Becker (husband of KC Vice President, Dr. Ashley Becker) and his unit deployed in Iraq.

Serving Our Past, Present And Future Military Population In April 2019 members of the public and Kaskaskia College proudly cut the ribbon to officially open the KC Veteran & Military Family Student Center. Located on the main campus, the Veteran Center offers space for military veterans and their families to enjoy the same level of camaraderie and support they received during their service.

At the same time, it assists in their transition from the military to the classroom.

Funded entirely by donations, The Veteran Student Center showcases the generosity of the KC Family and solidifies the college’s commitment to the men & women who have served in uniform.

DUAL CREDIT - A VALUABLE SERVICE TO STUDENTS! Each year hundreds of area high school students and their parents save hundreds of thousands of dollars in college tuition costs through Kaskaskia College’s Dual Credit Program. Through this program, high school students earn college credit while attending high school. Kaskaskia College is one of the few remaining institutions in Illinois that waives tuition and fees for dual credit classes. Studies show that students who earn dual credit while still in high school are more than likely to be successful in their post-secondary studies.

Introducing the KC Snack Station The Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) team, in coordination with Student Services, launched the “KC Snack Station� during the Spring 2019 semester. This resource is available to KC students and employees who are dealing with food insecurity. Student hunger has been well documented, and the Kaskaskia College administration has identified a strong need for this service. Many colleges and universities in Illinois offer food assistance support of some kind. It is difficult to focus and be successful when you are hungry. Our goal is to provide a small snack to those who are hungry.

The Snack Station has received almost 2,000 donated food units and over 300 toiletry items!

KC Engineering students toured the Olmstead Locks and Dam near the confluence of the Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers.

Spring showers didn’t dampen the College’s Annual Spring Picnic.

KC graduate Lauren Stengel’s article “Why We Need Fantasy Literature”, was originally written for her class. However, the article written, about the importance of fantasy literature, was later picked up by the Areo Magazine based in the U.K.

KC Theatre Guild students performed the children’s play “Goldilocks on Trial ” before more than 1,500 area school children.

SUPPORTING THE COMMUNITY As in previous years, KC students, faculty and staff were once again out in force in the community, lending a hand and contributing their knowledge, skills, and expertise to a number of charitable and community-based projects—all with the goal of making south central Illinois a place where all may thrive and develop to their fullest potential.

Kaskaskia College was proud to host a United States Naturalization Ceremony in the Lifelong Learning Center. Approximately, 67 people from 27 different countries took the oath of citizenship that day. The youngest was 21 and the oldest was 80!

The Kaskaskia College Engineering Association took part in cleaning up a two-mile section of Route 50 west of Sandoval as part of the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Adopt a Highway Program. Students and KC faculty collected enough debris to fill more than 20 large garbage bags.

Kaskaskia College and the South Central Illinois Growth Alliance (SCIGA) hosted the 2019 Critical Skills Gap Summit 2.0 on the main campus. The forum featured industry leaders from the KC District and the metro-east area highlighting the vocational skills gap many companies face.

Kaskaskia College hosts a number of community education classes for the young and young at heart. Pictured above are students who took part in a “Bugs and Butterflies” class through KC’s Kids in College at Kaskaskia (KICK) program.

KC played host to the Illinois Community College Trustees Association (ICCTA) regional meeting in March. Community college leaders from throughout Southern Illinois attended to discuss issues facing higher education.

SUPPORTING THE COMMUNITY

Dr. Deanna Blackwell of Lincoln Land Community College was the keynote speaker at KC’s 2019 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration.

More than two hundred people turned out to help Kaskaskia College celebrate various cultures from around the world during its annual Celebration of Diversity. KC Culinary Art students prepared food from seven different countries.

KC Cosmetology students visited several area nursing homes in the spring to provide free services to residents.

KC’s volleyball and soccer teams taking part in the 2019 Bond County Fair Parade in Greenville. KC faculty, staff and students participate in many parades and festivals throughout the year to support local events and to make new friends.

KC Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) students worked in early spring to renovate the restrooms at Hannah’s Playground in Breese. The students installed heat in the restrooms at the playground, which accommodates children with disabilities.

Each year Kaskaskia College Cosmetology students host a blood drive for the American Red Cross. [ 12 ]

ON THE ROAD TO NATIONALS! The 2018-19 athletic season was a time to shine for the KC Blue Devils as both the men’s basketball team and the tennis team headed for their respective national tournaments. The Blue Devils basketball team, under head coach Brian Hancock earned a berth to the (NJCAA) National Junior College Basketball Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas in exciting fashion. The Blue Devils finished the regular season with a 20-10 record and earned the trip to the National Tournament by defeating #4 Olney Central College, #2 Wabash Valley College and #1 Vincennes University to claim the District 16 and Region 24 Championships. The Devils made it to the Sweet 16 before falling to the third-ranked team in the nation.

The Blue Devils Tennis Team headed to the nationals after defeating Lewis and Clark Community College to win the Region 24 Championship. The team then traveled to Tuscon, Arizona to represent Blue Devil pride.

AWARDS AND RECOGNITION

KC Board Chair Bill Hawley was recognized by the Illinois Community College Trustees Association for more than 30 years of service

Adult Education instructor Terry Chappell was recognized by the City of Salem as its “Educator of the Year” in recognition of his passion for offering students second chances by teaching High School Equivalency (HSE), formerly known as GED, classes.

Alzheimer Association President and CEO Harry Johns (L) was named KC’s 2019 Distinguished Alumnus.

Under John’s leadership the Alzheimer’s Association has increased awareness and understanding of this disease as well as developed support for patients and their caregivers.

Physical Therapy Assistant Program Coordinator Michelle Wessel and Philosophy Professor Dr. Scott Crothers were named Full Time Faculty of the Year.

KC Blue Devils Basketball Coach, Brian Hancock, was named the 2019 Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) Junior College Co-Coach of the Year and Region 24 and District 16 Coach of the Year.

KC Board Trustee Jim Beasley is just the fifth Illinois community college trustee to receive the Linden A. Warfel Trustee Education Award from the Illinois Community College Trustees Association.

The Kaskaskia College district comprises all or part of nine counties in southern and central Illinois, and covering 2,231 square miles with approximately 130,000 residents. The main campus is located outside Centralia, Illinois with education and extension centers providing services in Greenville, Nashville, Salem, Trenton, and Vandalia. KC serves approximately 8,600 individuals annually through credit and noncredit courses, as well as adult education classes. KC also provides credit and noncredit contract training to assist business and industry.

The Foundation’s 2019 Golf Tournament was held at the Salem Country Club. This year’s tournament, which raised over $24,000 towards student scholarships, was named in memory of Jo Beckemeyer, who started and organized the tournament for more than 20 years.

PLAY AMONG THE STARS!

The Kaskaskia College Foundation hosted its first annual Winter Gala in December 2018 to raise funds for various student initiatives. More than one hundred area business, community, and education leaders joined college and foundation members to ring in the holiday season, raising more than

The Kaskaskia College Friends of the Fine Arts held a reception on the stage of the Jane Knight Auditorium in recognition of the major donors who helped with the Steinway Piano Restoration project. The Friends, in association with the KC Board of Trustees, funded a $45,000 project to completely restore the College’s 93-year-old piano. [ 24 ]

KC Foundation After School College Program Because of the commitment of the KC Foundation, and with the cooperation of several area high schools, in 2018 the college established the After School College Program to replace lost college credit by offering these courses at no charge.
