FILLING THE SKILLS GAP A skills gap is defined as “a significant gap
between an organization’s skill needs and the current capabilities of its workforce”. The skills gap is a growing crisis happening all across America and is expected to get worse as current laborers near retirement. There aren’t enough new laborers entering the trades to fill their place. AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY The Automotive Technology program will provide you with the needed skills for successful entry into a career in the automotive industry. With many opportunities for employment, skilled automotive technicians are high in demand. Employers are willing to pay well due to the shortage of skilled technicians. There is currently not enough workers to fill industry demands. At Kaskaskia College we offer a college-level program that is certified by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF). CARPENTRY Kaskaskia College’s Carpentry Occupations program allows students to explore the many facets of work encompassed within the carpentry profession. This program offers 15 unique classes that cover basic skills needed to be successful in this high demand trade. We cover everything from safety precautions, understanding of materials and tools, on-site plan development, and layout work through final construction. Courses will cover site work and site layout, concrete, metal studs, wood framing, finish work, cabinet making, exterior trim, siding, roofing systems, and more. We give you all the training necessary to build a great future in carpentry. This program is designed to help you prepare for a career in the building trades and requires dedication to learning and understanding of all aspects of building dynamics. You will have many opportunities to apply your knowledge, and will gain real world experience through hands-on projects.

ARCHITECTURAL & ENGINEERING DRAFTING Today almost everything imaginable is manufactured. Meaning, someone has to take those ideas and develop them into a set of working drawings for individuals to be able to manufacture or construct. This process is done by using specific 2D & 3D drawing software. If you are a visual problem solver then the Architectural & Engineering Drafting Technology program is the right choice for you. HEATING, VENTILATION, AIR CONDITIONING This program prepares students to install, service and repair residential and commercial air conditioning, refrigeration and heating systems. Students will study physical, mechanical, and chemical principles of refrigeration and air conditioning with emphasis on electrical controls and motors. Students will also gain proficiency in blueprint reading, sheet metal construction, proper ventilation, installation, heating and cooling diagnosis and installation of residential and commercial equipment.
Job outlook
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Employment of heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers is projected to grow 15 percent from 2016 to 2022, faster than the average for all occupations. Candidates familiar with computers and electronics and those with good troubleshooting skills will have the best job opportunities, as employers continue to have difficulty finding qualified technicians to work on complex new systems.
