What drew you into industrial design and fine arts?

I was drawn to the arts very early on. My parents had a book about art reproductions on the coffee table when I was little. I would spend hours looking at the images. I also remember drawing from as early as I could hold a pencil. I enjoyed it and would do it for hours, building up practice, fine motor skills, observation - that is really all it takes to draw. So going into fine arts was always a certainty for me. I was also a builder, who loved to make things out of paper, cardboard, then wood, and other materials. When I went to study fine arts, I realize that being a painting artist or illustrator wasn’t going to fulfill my tinkerer inspirations. Industrial design was one of the option offered in my school and it seemed to blend both of my passions. I realized later that my true inspiration was to become an architect. Things change as we mature...

What kinds of marketing material do you use for your design firm? I use very little marketing materials. The real effort I put into marketing is writing a beautiful and hand written New Year notes to my clients at the end of the year. Otherwise, most of my clients find me through word of mouth. I am terrible at posting anything on social media, as I find that it distracts me from doing more in-depth work. I’m probably a bad example when it comes to marketing... What kinds of marketing material have you seen to be most effective? Of course I created a logo, a web site and these are essential to running a business. Besides these, my clients have written reviews for me that have been incredibly helpful because they are authentic. What do you think graphic marketing offers that video marketing doesn’t? Being someone who has done a fair amount of graphic work, I have an appreciation for great composition. Graphic marketing is very direct as it doesn’t require time, which a video does. What do you think video marketing offers that graphic marketing doesn’t? I like videos to show the spaces I design once in a while. That is a great tool to give a full appreciation of the work I do. Videos also give a true sense of who a business owner is. You come across as knowledge, personable, and dependable. Or you don’t. I think being authentic and loving what you do is one of the most powerful things you can communicate about your business.

What drew you into animation work? I loved cartoons and art making growing up and eventually I figured out that I wanted to make it into a career of some kind.

Do you have experience doing marketing with animation? Could you describe your experience? I have used social media for promoting my work, mainly Facebook and Instagram. Submitting my films to film festivals could also be counted as “film marketing” I try to post and share work as much as possible and enter my films into as many festivals as possible. There is a saying “a jug fills drop by drop” and I would say that’s how it’s worked for me. Just continually working at it bit by bit. What kind of role do you think animation has in marketing? It’s used widely for advertising, raising awareness, and spreading information. What do you think graphic marketing offers that video marketing doesn’t? What is “graphic marketing” anyway? still images? I’m going to assume so - maybe that it can be printed and placed places where video cannot go? What do you think video marketing offers that graphic marketing doesn’t? Video is motion based - making moving images may grab someone’s attention over a still image Is there anything else you have to say that might help with my research project? Social media is one of the best places for advertising these days. The “metaverse” may another great platform but is still to be determined!
