Hello readers So 2017 is now in full swing.

Many of us will have started the new year with excitement, some with sadness, some with trepidation and others with a ‘so what, it’s just another year.’

My husband and I had a lovely time over the festive period but as a result of buffet overload, I’m now in ‘keep fit and lose weight’ mode … which definitely places me firmly in the ‘trepidation’ bracket. Is it normal to be afraid of a tiny piece of plastic that’s going to track my activity? It will count my steps, count how many flights of stairs I’ve climbed and it will even track me while I’m asleep. Sleep seems to elude me at the moment, so that’ll be an interesting one … will it send my tracker into premature meltdown? Unfortunately not, and I’ve only got myself to blame; I requested this tiny piece of plastic in my letter to Santa and bless him, he obliged and left it under the tree for me. Now I suppose I’ve got to be a good girl and make use of it!

Money Matters: Inheritance Tax Someone famous once said “Every advantage has its taxation” and creating personal wealth over a lifetime to pass on to your family upon your demise seems very relevant.

Former Chancellor of the Exchequer, Roy Jenkins, also said in 1986, “Inheritance Tax is, broadly speaking, a voluntary levy paid by those who distrust their heirs more than they dislike the Inland Revenue.”

Whilst the above quote may be a slight exaggeration, there is certainly no need to pay more IHT than you have to. That’s why it’s known as the UK’s only ‘voluntary tax’. With the benefit of careful planning, IHT can certainly be reduced or even avoided completely.

Tax year 2015/2016 saw record receipts to HMRC of £4.65bn. 2016/2017 is already 6% higher than this. Once upon a time it was thought that only the rich would pay IHT. Until recently, it was thought near to 1% of estates were affected but, by 2021, HM Treasury was expecting this to be nearer 10% of estates despite some forthcoming changes to the IHT Nil Rate Band of £325,000.

So IHT is a tax that raises valuable funds for the Treasury. However, reflecting Chancellor Jenkins views in 1986, it is something that could be avoided or reduced (marginally). Tax is payable at a rate of 40% above the Nil Rate Band for a single person, but this is increased to £650,000 for those married or in a civil partnership. For these people the Nil Rate Band is transferrable to a surviving spouse/civil partner.

April 2017 sees the introduction of a new supplementary Residence Nil Rate Band which will be phased in gradually over the next 4 tax years.

This will effectively in some cases increase the Nil Rate Band to £500,000, but only £175,000 (the new Residential Nil Rate Band), will be for use against the value of the main residence with those people with direct descendents. It cannot be used with any other properties such as a holiday home or any investment property. If you have no residential property, then your NRB will stay at £325,000.

Many people still pay IHT unnecessarily. Usually because they leave it too late in their lives, or are under a misapprehension that a married couple already has £1,000,000 Nil Rate Band available to them! Other reasons for not acting is fear over losing control of their assets by either giving them away to family or Trusts, leaving them worried that they may need the money for their own use in their remaining lifetime. Some people are simply now too concerned to act at all because of the recent negative press on the Government’s clampdown on tax avoidance.

IHT can be reduced or avoided legitimately with careful financial planning. Speak to your independent financial and legal advisers.

Short Story The Science of Snow Shovelling Maurice laced his boots up eagerly, pleased with himself for remembering to get the snow shovel out of the shed last night.

Thanks to a thick blanket of snow, this Sunday morning was the perfect opportunity to win back the favour of Mrs Harby, his comely neighbour. What woman could resist a man with a shovel? And when it came to snow and the shovelling of it, Maurice considered himself quite the expert.

Dale returned with a freshly boiled kettle.

“Out the way,” he said, “I’m going to pour this.”

He opened his front door and was met with an unwelcome sight. Mrs Harby’s teenage grandson, Dale, was already pacing her drive wielding a shovel of his own. Maurice’s last encounter with Dale had ended with a line full of Mrs Harby’s sheets going up in flames.

The boy was a menace, and, by the looks of things thought Maurice, his snow shovelling technique was a disgrace. Rather than methodically working down the driveway, Dale was randomly throwing snow everywhere.

“Don’t,” Maurice said. “It’ll just make matters worse.”

“Can I give you some advice young man?” Maurice called over. “You’re going about that all wrong.”

If it works I’ll eat my shovel Maurice thought.

“Nah, I’m alright,” Dale called back.

“You’re just making more work,” Maurice said. “I’m sure your grandmother would like to get her car off the drive at some point.”

“Yeah,” Dale said, hacking at the ground. “She’s going out for Sunday lunch.”

“Anywhere nice?” Maurice liked to keep abreast of all Mrs Harby’s comings and goings.

“I didn’t ask.” Dale kicked a pile of snow.

“I’d better lend a hand.” Maurice strode purposefully across with his shovel. It was time to impress the lady by taking control of the situation.

“You know what would get this done quicker?” Dale said, stumbling into a snow drift. “Chucking down some hot water.”

“That’s where you’re wrong,” Maurice said. “The only way to clear this drive is with hard work. Hot water will do more harm than good.”

“Yeah, right,” Dale said sarcastically, throwing down his shovel. “I’m off to get some.”

Good lord, Maurice thought, don’t they teach them anything at school these days? At least with the boy gone for a few minutes he could get on with the job properly.

“Course it won’t,” Dale said.

“Just to prove it, do a patch test,” Maurice said. “Pour a small amount somewhere that your grandmother won’t tread and see what happens.”

“Good plan,” Dale said. “But if it works we’ll pour it everywhere.”

“Somewhere she definitely won’t tread?” Dale said. Mrs Harby opened the front door, elegantly dressed for her lunch date.

“Morning!” Maurice gave a dignified bow. “We’re conducting an experiment.”

“How lovely,” she said. This is wonderful Maurice thought, not only will she be pleased with me for clearing her drive, she’ll be impressed by how I’m educating her grandson.

“Go ahead lad,” he said indulgently. “Whenever you’re ready.”

Dale stood next to his grandmother’s car with the kettle held high, a cloud of steam coming out of the spout.

Then, before Maurice could stop him, Dale poured the scalding water all over the windscreen. There was a sickening crack as the glass shattered into a thousand irreparable fragments.

Maurice’s face drained of all colour.

“Oh mate!” Dale laughed. “You were totally right.”

Mrs Harby scowled and stormed back inside the house, slamming the front door behind her.

Maurice’s next challenge to impress Mrs Harby was how to get a windscreen replaced on a snowy Sunday morning. And the less Dale was involved in that the better.

Just a Thought...

Coffee Scream!

A few days ago I realised why I married my husband. Aside from the obvious, we are the Yin to the other’s Yang when it comes to confectionery. We’d been bought a box of chocolates and so one evening while watching a film I opened them. I divided them up between us and it dawned upon me how easy this was.

He, you see, likes all the strawberry cream, caramel heart type creations. I, on the other hand, am much more partial to the praline or coconut style choccies. So with ease the box was divided. There was one left. One solitary morsel. I didn’t even need to reference the selection list, I just knew it – it was the coffee cream!!

Days out with Dennis Go by Bus? Why Not??

Burton-on-Trent is one of mine and Barbara’s favourite places and although it is easy to do the straight run down the A38, this outing takes a little longer. The traveller, however, is well rewarded by the quality of the countryside and scenery that is traversed.

We start with Trent Barton’s The Sixes to Belper from outside ‘Tonkers’ in Ripley at 10:32. Leave that bus in Belper bus station and walk into King Street to catch Your Bus service 113 at 11:10 from outside the Iceland shop, arriving in Ashbourne bus station at 11:47.

Travelling via Shottle, Turnditch and Hulland Ward, it also passes through the quaintly named ‘Cross o’ th’ Hands’. From Ashbourne bus station Trent Barton’s Swift at 11:57 will take you to Uttoxeter bus station, arriving there by 12:41. Uttoxeter is pronounced as ‘Uchetter’ by the locals. The bus station is compact, has toilets and is close to the shopping area.

The service onward to Burton-on-Trent is operated by Midland Classic. Their buses are usually painted yellow and red. We used service 403 leaving at 13:08 because I believe a double deck bus is usually scheduled and the best views can be had from upstairs.

Burton-on-Trent is reached by 14:00 and it is there that we normally take a break.

Returning to Derby then: walk up New Street with the Coopers Square shopping centre (where there are toilets) on your left, round

It must be some ‘Sugar Federation Inclusion Policy’ that keeps them there, because frankly no-one likes them! I can just about understand the Turkish Delight’s purpose – though you could paste chocolate onto a freshly deodorised armpit and achieve the same taste and texture. The coffee cream, however, really is just there to be obtuse, obnoxious almost.

The distress it caused that we, the stupendous sweetie dream team could not fully share a box of chocolates. If we couldn’t who could? And then I remembered that half the world is starving and couldn’t care less about coffee creams and I had a moment of clarity and perspective and moved on ... I may still write a letter though!

Ticketing: as usual bus pass holders travel free. Fare payers should buy a Derbyshire Wayfarer on the first bus. This is accepted on services to Uttoxeter and back from Derbyshire destinations.

An additional fare will need to be paid for the Uttoxeter to Burton-on-Trent section.

At the time of writing, Derby City Council are ‘considering’ imposing a levy on ‘Bus Pass’ passengers on the X38 and possibly on the Comet which intending travellers should be aware of.

The Better Life Cutting it Fine The crisp and sometimes frosty mornings now don’t deter nature. It whispers, ‘spring is coming - honest - it’s just stuck in traffic.’

There’s work to be done, and plenty of it. To begin with, Anne decided more snowdrops would be just the thing, so she carefully lifted the clumps and divided them before replanting. My contribution was to go and put the kettle on.

This is a time of year for taking stock in the garden and for preparing to restock. Inevitably, there are casualties; even perennials have their limitations and our perpetual chard has finally reached the end. We’ll definitely plant out more though, as perpetual chard is the gift that keeps on giving.

It’s also time to start onions and spring salad leaves under cover.

The tail end of winter - fingers crossed at time of writing - also marks that point where firewood stocks are running low and it’s time to bring out Charlie the Chainsaw. When I first acquired the saw it spent a long time in the shed with its blade pristine, despite Anne constructing a sawhorse that looked like something out of The Krypton Factor.

There are also repairs to consider. The roof of the coal bunker is more plastic sheeting than wood now, so every storm is followed by my own version of rooftop Russian roulette. Similarly, the shed door is surviving by a single, ailing hinge. It will all require time, effort and skill - luckily, I know just the neighbour. Speaking of which, we had a visitor recently - a former neighbour who moved away a year ago. He said he was just passing and asked if he could borrow our wheelbarrow. Unfortunately for him, we don’t have one. As it almost says in Hamlet, “Neither a lender nor a barrower be.”

I’m afraid my reputation where pointy things, electricity, heat or water are concerned is well deserved. My initial worry with the chainsaw was that I’d be all fingers and thumbs. Fortunately, it’s a small, electric model, so no risk of anything involving the words whirring and ladder. Even so, the first time I used it I somehow managed to slip the chain from the mechanism. It’s all in the preparation: read the booklet first and then watch the clips on the Internet.

Cutting up firewood can be immensely satisfying when you’ve lugged it up from the woods or rescued it from a lay-by. Okay, it might not be up there with building an igloo or trekking through the Amazon but it’s still working in harmony with the environment.

The whole garden gets a bit of a spruce up now, although we leave the anti-frost fleece around the vulnerable plants until warmer weather is assured. Our tools receive some much-needed attention as well, and I generally clean out the dried grass from the lawn mower that I promised myself I’d do before Christmas.

Travel Bergen, Norway Nestling between the Seven Mountains and a sprinkling of islands in the North Sea, Norway’s second city is one of the prettiest towns on the south-west coast.

Bright and colourful, it shines whatever the weather, old and new jostling side by side, just steps away from the scenic wonders of a pristine natural world.

Laced with inlets and bays, Bergen is the gateway to the fjords, the perfect base to catch a glimpse of this enticing world, maybe sailing for a few hours on Sognefjord, the longest and deepest, or Osterfjord encircling an island where myriad waterfalls tumble down the cliffs. It’s sheer magic; a hidden paradise which lingers in your mind long after you return to harbour.

Highly rated by cruise ships and yachts, Bergen’s maritime vocation dates back to medieval times, enjoying its golden age from the 14th century onwards when the Hanseatic League brought trade and prosperity. Today the finely restored merchants’ houses are the city’s most iconic image, their wooden façades painted in vibrant colours, rising gable to gable along the old Bryggen wharf.

It’s a world heritage site and the most atmospheric part of town, with wooden alleyways festooned in rickety steps and overhanging galleries and craft shops tucked in every corner. Just minutes away at the water’s edge, stalls tempt visitors with succulent summer berries and reindeer sausages half a metre long, while the fish market serves simple but delicious meals under the awnings. When the sun shines on a long summer’s day, restaurants spill out onto the cobbled quay and it feels almost Mediterranean.

It’s easy to stroll around Bergen from the medieval fortress to the gleaming high street, from the tip of the peninsula to the esplanade leading down to the lake. Sculptures and fountains pop up here and there and sometimes the sound of violins drifts under the arcades, remembering the local virtuoso Ole Bull, or it could be the haunting echo of a Grieg melody. Both artists were born in Bergen.

Meanwhile, in the elegant district above the old town, white weatherboard houses climb up the slopes along the steep meandering lanes or gather higgledy-piggledy in secluded courtyards. Roses bloom in cottage gardens and the higher you go, the better the views. Now and then the funicular railway makes its way up the mountain where you look across the city and fjords to the islands in the distance. Up there, rambling trails head through forests and heathland dotted with lakes, rocks and cliffs rise above the treeline and when you reach the top of Rundemanen at 568 metres, mountains roll as far as you can see. In these highlands haunted by mysterious trolls, you could encounter a wolverine, a lynx or a bear but visitors who come to see the city lights do not stray far after dark.

But according to a local saying, ‘you haven’t been to Bergen if you haven’t been to Ulriken’ – at 643 metres, the highest of the seven mountains. As visitors step out of the cable car many linger on the viewing platform, overwhelmed by the panorama and the cool mountain air, but when the last shreds of mist melt away, the more adventurous head for the summit strewn with boulders and rocks. There are bogs and ponds, wild rabbits, mossy grass, but in this wild open land the mountains are as stunning as the city glistening far below, garlanded in fjords and islands.

Beer Beers of the Month: February Beers of the Month: March February, of course, is St Valentine’s Day,

parsnips?! You’ll like this. Not at once, maybe, but you’ll like it.

book-ended by a couple of fortnights in which nothing much happens except that it rains a lot and once every four years an utterly superfluous day appears which nobody wants as their birthday.

March is spring. It may not always feel like it, but the hares are boxing in the fields and daffodils and magnolias and crocuses and whatnot are blooming their heads off and the hedges are heavy with pussy willow, so it’s definitely spring. And to celebrate it, here are two classic pale ales for you.

But if you’re young and in love, the deep mysterious thrill that comes with opening that anonymous card more than makes up for the rest of the month’s dreariness. So here’s a beer for St Valentine’s Day that’s doubly full of love.

Timothy Taylor Landlord at 4.1% alcohol is from a long-established family-owned brewery in Keighley, West Yorkshire.

Founded in 1858, Taylor’s rubbed along for more than a century, like dozens of similar neighbourhood breweries up and down the country, on the back of a tiny tied estate and what free trade it could get within spitting distance of its own front door.

In the 1950s, local breweries like Taylor’s started selling up as their owners were made offers they couldn’t refuse by bigger competitors. Taylor’s, though, opted for independence, and distanced itself from its accountant-led rivals by refusing to cut corners and building a reputation for quality. Landlord, launched in 1952 as a best bitter following the end of wartime malt rationing, quickly established a name for itself and in more recent decades has won CAMRA’s Champion Beer of Britain competition four times. It’s a complex yet beautifully balanced ale, with aromas of both toffee and fruit, a light and spritzy body, a hoppy and quenching palate, a long, dry, hoppy finish. Open a bottle on the first really nice day of spring!

Lovestruck – yes, it’s the name that makes it a beer for Valentine’s – is a 4.4% alcohol pale ale from the Madness Brewing Company.

Its nose is very fresh, with that classic new-mown hay aroma that properly belongs to a good pale ale and an overtone of summer fruits. The mouth feel and flavour are almost as light and spritzy as a Prosecco (so right for St Valentine’s!) while the finish has the merest hint of hoppy bitterness. But there’s more to love in Lovestruck than just the label. It’s one of a trio of beers made by West London’s recentlyestablished Portobello Brewery for the nutty boys themselves – and who, even after all these years, doesn’t love Madness?

InfraRed from another newly-founded craft brewer, Hardknott of Millom, Cumbria, is a different prospect altogether. At 6.2% alcohol it has a chill-banishing warmth to it, along with a mixed bundle or aromas and flavours of almost baffling complexity. The brewery says it takes its inspiration from America and Belgium – but this, being an authentically hoppy, strong India Pale Ale but with a few buckets of crystal malt shovelled in for luck, is a one-off. The appearance is a deep ruby with an oddly straw-coloured foam. The nose is floral but in an old-lady way – parma violets, lavender, garden-centre soap. Then the flavour is intensely, shockingly hoppy but with a hint of fennel/ liquorice sweetness, while the finish is very, very long and very, very bitter and carries an intriguing note of...

Ridley’s of Chelmsford was superficially similar to Taylor’s but with a larger and more scattered pub estate. It, too, tried to survive; but in 2005, weighed down with debt, the family sold up. Greene King, which bought the firm, closed the brewery but kept on brewing what had become its flagship beer: Old Bob strong pale at 5.1% alcohol, an example of what used to be called a Burton ale. It’s darker than landlord – almost bronze – and much sweeter, with biscuit malt on the nose, a rich, warm, slightly caramel, but clean palate, and a lingering hop bitterness developing in the finish. Similar in some respects to Landlord – but for a colder day!

Recipe

Caramelised Onion and Goat’s Cheese Pizza This is a tasty alternative to the classic cheese and tomato pizza. Serve with a simple mixed green salad dressed with balsamic vinegar and olive oil.

Serves: 4 Ready in: 1 hour Ingredients: 3 tbsp olive oil, plus extra to drizzle 2 large onions, peeled and thinly sliced 2 tsp brown sugar 2 x 145g packets pizza base mix 2 tsp fresh chopped rosemary leaves, plus 1 tbsp small sprigs 2 x 100g round goat’s cheeses, sliced 5 cherry tomatoes, halved Method: Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan and add the onions. Fry over a gentle heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened.

Add the sugar and fry for a further 10 minutes until golden brown. Leave to cool.

Preheat the oven to 220C, Fan 200C, Gas Mark 7. Empty both sachets of the pizza base mix into a large bowl and stir in a

large pinch of salt and the chopped rosemary leaves. Stir in 200ml hand-hot water and mix to a soft dough. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Roll the dough out to a 30 x 45cm oblong.

Place on a greased baking sheet and turn up the edges of the base. Spread the caramelised onions over the base, then top with the sliced goat’s cheese, cherry tomatoes and rosemary sprigs. Leave in a warm place for 10 minutes.

Drizzle with olive oil and season with a little salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper.

Bake for 15-20 minutes until the base is golden brown.

Instead of the caramelised onions, spread the pizza base with sun-dried tomato paste then top with some cooked and drained spinach.

Scatter over diced mozzarella cheese, grated parmesan cheese and some fresh chopped oregano.

Tom Goes Shopping After working so hard on her GCSEs, Hannah deserved a reward. A slap up meal with some of her mates perhaps?

I decided to consult Sarah for guidance. The look on her face told me that my reasoning was completely off beam. How had I managed to stagger through to my early middle years without exposure to that most terrible of transatlantic imports – The Prom?

“Tom, it’s a very important milestone in a girl’s life.”

“Yes but she didn’t go to Rydell High and her name’s not Sandra Dee.” “Don’t be silly. Now jump in, we’re off to choose the dress.”

“I can’t believe my opinion is of any value.”

“It isn’t, but you’re paying.”

is on first name terms with the Headmaster so I’m sure if he put in a good word…”

“Tom, it’s got nothing to do with that. It’s so girls from the same school don’t turn up in the same dress. Now, the shoes.

Hannah, go and show him your shoes.”

Hannah disappeared and, after a pause, tottered back into view wearing a strange pair of glittering stilts.

“Now Tom, aren’t they gorgeous!”

“Where’s this prom being held? Billy Smart’s Circus? And how on earth are you supposed to walk in those?”

Unconvinced, I eased the Mondeo into town. Eventually, we arrived outside a compact boutique catering for tastes that were distinctly sophomoric. Upon entering I was immediately overwhelmed by chiffon and silk. Gingerly I fingered a price tag. The figures swam before my eyes. I was approached by a formidable woman sporting sparkly spectacles secured around her neck by means of a gold chain. Concerned that she might have seen me balk at the price and afraid of appearing a miser I said, “This one looks lovely. That’s my daughter over there; will you have it in her size?” The woman flipped on her specs and gawped at the Apple Of My Eye, then at the dress. “Yes we have her size. Which school is she at?”

My nemesis with the glittering glasses interjected, “Oh, they’re not for walking in sir, they are what is known as a dinner shoe.”

Dinner shoe? Nonplussed, I decided to press on. “I see, so how much would a pair in which you can actually put one foot in front of the other cost?”

“Rydell – sorry, Rainford High.”

Safely home (after a lie down) I was offered a restorative cup of tea (two sugars). “Right, that’s the Prom Dress sorted.

Now we just have to sort out her After Prom dress.”

The smartly dressed lady motioned for me to follow her to the desk where she licked her finger and then ran it firmly down a list. Snapping off her gigs she looked me in the eye and without hesitation said, “No.” “No what?” I asked.

“No. You cannot buy that dress for your daughter.”

“Why not?”

“Because of the school she goes to.”

I felt my hackles rise. “Madam, I cannot believe that in this day and age, what school you attended is any impediment to free choice. Why am I being discriminated against?”

At this point Sarah intervened. “Tom we’ve found the dress.

Here, look.”

And then from behind a curtain appeared Hannah – a vision of blossoming beauty. I turned to the proprietress. “Now Madam, I know we are from lowly stock but my Uncle Henry

“Oh, they would be much cheaper.”

It was at this point that I felt my grip on reality slipping away.

“Look Tom, let’s just pay and I can talk you through it all later.”

Gently, Sarah extracted the wallet from my jacket and helped me over to the card terminal.

I jumped up and ran behind the sofa. From the safety of my temporary redoubt I said, “I don’t have to go back there again do I?” “No Tom, relax, we’ll sort that out.”

“And then is that it?”

“Yes. Apart from the After Prom party.”

“Now I’ve heard of them, is that where a load of giggly drunk teenagers descend on some poor parents house and trash it?”

“Come on Dad,” said Hannah, “we won’t trash anything, promise.”

“Now Tom, don’t worry, leave everything to us, and stop crying...”

Derbyshire Walking: Belper to Kilburn Walk Type: Hilly countryside with several steep climbs Distance: 7.2 miles (11.6 km) Time: Allow 3.5 – 4 hours Waymarking: Routeway 11 OS MAP Explorer 259 (1:25,000) Derby OS Map: Explorer 259 (1:25,000) Derby Start: Belper Railway Station car park (Grid Ref. 347 476). Alternatively the Coppice Car Park and join the walk at section 2 (Grid Ref. 350 474) Belper is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 and was a market town based on local agricultural activity. With the arrival of the Strutt family in the 18th century, textile milling became the chief occupation and the haphazard layout of streets and buildings was replaced with a more formal arrangement.

The Route 1. Follow the signs towards the railway platform. Walk down the right-hand side of Poundland on to King Street, the main shopping street. Turn left to go up the hill. At the top, turn left and cross at the lights.

2. Bear diagonally right to cross the old market place and go through into a large car park heading for the woodland. Go down the steps and follow the path over the footbridge. You are now in Belper Parks Local Nature Reserve, a former medieval deer park and once part of the Duffield Frith. Bear left to travel through the reserve all the way to Mill Lane.

3. Turn left, down the hill, and cross at the bend and go into the recreation ground. Immediately turn right (do not go over the footbridge) along the footpath with the brook on your left. Follow this path all the way to a field.

Go through the squeeze stile and continue uphill over two fields until you reach the bridleway (single track).

4. Turn left along the bridleway and through the gate. Stay on the bridleway all the way to the road.

5. Turn left and cross the road (beware of traffic). After 100 metres take the footpath on your right which travels between Sandbed House and the hedge. Go over the stile and turn left, keeping to the hedge on your left. Travel over 5 fields.

6. At the sixth field do not go down the track but continue along the footpath which travels to the right of the track.

At the main road turn left uphill. Cross the straight section (beware of traffic). As the road bends left, take the alleyway on the right which passes in front of Ireton Houses. Climb the stile and cut across the field bearing diagonally left towards the bridleway.

7. Go across the track, through the hedge and turn right along the bridleway. At the next gate, bear left and follow the bridleway downhill. Cross the footbridge over the A38. Once across, continue ahead down the track, heading towards the trees. Follow the track as it turns to the right, keeping the hedge on your right. Continue following the path through the trees for a considerable distance.

Health, Beauty & Fitness 8. Before you reach the old metal railway bridge, turn right at the sign and follow the path to cross the stream on the footbridge. Cross the next field and go through the gap in the hedge. Turn right and follow the tarmac path alongside some houses. Continue ahead, travelling parallel with the railway line (on your left) on the tarmacked path.

At the junction turn left to cross over the disused railway.

Continue straight on over the footbridge to the road.

9. Cross the road (beware of traffic) and turn right. After 150 metres take the footpath on the left which travels through a field. Cross the road and continue over the footbridge and up through the field to a kissing gate at the top. Walk along the street past the schools. At the junction, turn right down the road. At the roundabout turn left.

10. After 150 metres cross the road opposite to the marked footpath by the bus stop. Follow the path as it passes through a field, keeping the hedge on your right, until you reach the main road. Turn right at the road and after a short distance cross the road (beware of traffic), opposite the footpath, and continue forwards. At the junction turn left to follow the former railway.

On a good day there are good views of Alport Heights. Its 314 metre peak is 7.5 kilometres away, topped by an array of aerials.

13. Cross the road (beware of traffic) and turn left down the road. After 50 metres take the footpath on the right next to house number 28. Follow the footpath, keeping to the hedge on your right, over two fields and across the third field. Go through the two farm gates close together and walk along the track with Wildersley Farm on your right. Continue along the farm track all the way to Holbrook road.

On the left are Stephenson’s Tower (a sighting tower built in 1839) and airshafts from the Derby Sheffield railway.

14. Cross the road and turn right. At the top of the road (after approximately 150 metres) turn left and follow the alleyway all the way until you come to a crossroads of footpaths. Again continue ahead; the path part way along becomes tarmac.

15. At the end of the surfaced path with handrail, continue ahead bearing right down through the trees. The path cuts to the back of a playing field and through a hedgeline.

Turn left to continue straight down the hill with the two churches on the skyline. The path joins a tarmac path, which goes over a stream and all the way to New Breck Road. Cross the road and the next (Queen Street) heading up into Belper. At the main road turn left (turn right up the hill onto the market place and into the Coppice car park if walk started here). Cross at the lights and turn right. After 20 metres turn left through the arched doorway into the Memorial Gardens. At King Street turn left downhill. Turn right next to ‘Poundland’ to lead you back to the starting point.

11. Go through the tunnel and continue for 200 metres.

Turn right once you reach two metal poles and go over the stile. Continue ahead with the hedge on your right.

12. Go over a stile and cross the footbridge and continue uphill with the hedge on your right. At the brow cut across the narrow section of field to a stone stile in the hedge. Continue diagonally across to the far right corner and into the green lane and up into Holbrook. Turn left out of Brown’s Lane. At the junction turn right up Pond Road. At Makeney Road turn right and after 50 metres cross the road opposite a footpath. Follow the path over a stile, continue ahead over the brow of the hill and then bearing diagonally to the right through the gap in the hedge. Continue ahead with the hedge on your right.

Motoring LA Auto Show James Baggott takes a look behind the scenes of America’s motor show in the Sunshine State.

For a land known for its love of excess, the LA motor show is a relatively bijou affair. Small, compact and easy to get around, it’s the polar opposite of the city that hosts it.

It makes little sense launching cars in a metropolis that’s smothered in a layer of smog, crammed with traffic and needs more cars like the ozone layer needs a bigger hole in it, but America being America does it anyway.

of cheetahs and chopsticks that were being used to demonstrate Mazda’s new design direction, the manufacturer showed off a rather smart looking SUV. It’s the best-selling model in Europe for the firm and its new nose, which has more than a hint of Jaguar F-Pace about it, points to the future look for all Mazdas. It also comes in a new red, which is redder than the last red.

Understood? Good.

Jaguar was another manufacturer that had decided to grab some early motoring show headlines, revealing its futuristic electric I-Pace to the world in its own unique style two full days before the event opened. Using virtual reality headsets it simultaneously launched the car in LA and London, with car designer Ian Callum showing off the firm’s first foray into electric vehicles (EVs).

Unlike the vast, monolithic motoring expos of Frankfurt and Paris, LA does things in bite-sized chunks. The stands are more compact, the press corps less stressed and fewer in numbers, and the new car launches less frequent.

But that doesn’t mean there wasn’t big news out there in the States – some manufacturers, especially those with a presence on this side of the pond, or with aspirations to have one, take the event pretty seriously.

LA was an apt showcase for a model that will sell 50 per cent of its volume in the States, and with a range of 310 miles on a single charge chances are those buyers will be queuing up to get hold of one when it goes into production next year. Finally a Tesla rival from Britain? We hope so.

Other notable launches included a world premiere for the largest of all Minis, the Countryman, and the new Volkswagen e-Golf with a range of 186 miles on a charge – up 50 per cent on its predecessor.

Alfa Romeo is one such ambitious car maker. The Italian firm showcased its new Stelvio SUV with a launch in a tent outside the main halls. It was so packed, the overzealous American fire regulations meant most journalists couldn’t even get in. Fortunately, this rival to the Porsche Macan and Jaguar F-Pace was quickly moved to the Alfa stand where we got a proper look.

Rumours suggest it will arrive in the UK late in 2017 with a diesel engine first, with a bi-turbo 2.9-litre V6 packing 503bhp following soon after. Some Italian flair in a sector not known for it will be most welcome.

Elsewhere, the Germans gave the clearest signs yet that another recession was imminent with the unveiling of the why-do-we-need-it Mercedes-Maybach S650 Cabriolet.

Just 300 of the 621bhp monsters will be produced and, although pricing is yet to be released, don’t expect much change from £200,000.

However, it was the real Americana that caught our eye in the subterranean halls under the main event. Dubbed ‘the garage’, they contained a host of modified motors that were a welcome relief from the corporate frontage of the manufacturer stands upstairs. Modified Ferraris, Gulf-liveried Fords and big-wheeled classics were among the delights hidden away below the show’s huge halls.

Just like the city then, proving if you scratch beneath the surface a little you’ll find the real treats.

Homes & Gardens Very smelly substances, such as mole smokes, can work against moles. These are like fireworks and, inserted into the run, produce unpleasant smoke.

However, with these and other smelly deterrents, once the smell has subsided the mole may return.

Traps are available from some garden centres or online stores. They must be correctly set and you must wear gloves as the moles will avoid the trap if they detect human scent. It is much more effective to employ a specialist mole catcher who is adept at trapping them and, since they often charge only on the basis of moles caught, it need not be too expensive a process either.

Gardening Velvet Underground They may be known as ‘velvet coated gentlemen’, but if you have a problem with moles in your garden, it is highly unlikely you will call them anything so polite!

So what can you do if your lawn becomes decorated with mounds of finely turned soil, or if plants start to disappear beneath soil level as subsidence occurs within the flowerbed, or an entire row of vegetables is excavated from below?

Moles can do a lot of damage to a lawn, largely because the fine soil acts as an excellent seedbed for weeds and can make the lawn surface slippery.

Mole runs beneath your lawn, flowerbeds or vegetable plots can occasionally cause the plants to suffer from drought, as the soil is no longer in contact with the roots. Often, when the tunnels collapse, subsidence occurs and plants can literally fall over.

Moles can sometimes be deterred by high-pitched sounds or vibrations. Try inserting children’s windmills over the mole infested areas, as the vibration that passes down these into the soil is said to send moles scampering away. Similarly, you can plunge glass bottles into the soil with the neck protruding. The noise and vibrations created as the wind whistles over the mouth of the bottles may also discourage moles.

Moles do eventually decide to go elsewhere, and although this does not imply that your garden will then remain free of moles, if the problem has been very bad one year it may not be quite so severe the next.

Some say that the plant caper spurge (Euphorbia lathyrus) will deter moles and as it does seem to work for some gardeners and the plants are fairly attractive it is worth giving it a try!

Some gardeners report success with ultrasonic devices that can be inserted into the ground.

Once again, I am afraid that it seems the majority of you find these ineffective and indeed I will never forget once seeing a molehill which appeared directly around the base of one of these gadgets in a friend’s garden – so they are not a method I recommend.

If all else fails, and attempting to look at this problem in a positive light, bear in mind that incredibly finely turned soil can be useful and many gardeners I know, including the wonderful ‘grandfather of gardening’ Geoffrey Smith, used the soil as a medium in which to grow an excellent crop of seedlings!

The Diary of a Local Mum Do As I Say (Not As I Do) I’ve just gone the full length of the dining room on my face, having tripped over a bag that had been carelessly discarded on the floor. As I hauled myself up, I was chuntering “Why don’t you kids EVER PUT ANYTHING AWAY!! You just fling things down wherever you happen to be standing, and leave it wherever it lands.

Well, it’s going to have to ... Oh ...” at which point I realised, to my shame and embarrassment, that the offending article was (ahem) my handbag.

“Yes, well, we all need to be a bit more careful about where we leave things. It’s not only untidy, it could be dangerous.” As if my face-plant hadn’t been funny enough, my subsequent rant and poor attempt at backtracking proved utterly hilarious to my kids, and my credibility plummeted straight through the floor that I’d just been in such close contact with.

But I’m definitely not the only one in our household who says one thing but does another.

In fact, Dad wins the medal in that department by a clear margin – and it has certainly not gone unnoticed. “Mum, why does Dad say no phones at the table and then answer his when it rings?

The other day he ate his WHOLE TEA while he was on the phone!” “Erm, well, because he’s a grown-up and sometimes grown-ups have important things to do that just can’t wait.”

(Knowing full well, from hearing one side of the conversation, that it definitely wasn’t a work call – and there’s no doubt that I wasn’t the only person to have picked up on that.) The same excuse couldn’t be applied when, having just been told not to drink milk from the cereal bowl, it was reported that “I’m only doing it because that’s what Daddy does!” Hmm, not so much of a grown-up then.

We spend our lives trying to teach our children the rules of polite society – what’s right and wrong, what’s courteous and acceptable, what’s sensible, healthy and safe. What we fail to tell them though, is that it’s an adult’s prerogative to flout these rules (well, some of them anyway) as and when we see fit – as long as, on some level, you know what they are. It’s a difficult concept to get your head around and it’s even harder to explain. When our contradictory behaviour is highlighted, we resort to the poor defence: “because I’m a grown-up so I’m allowed”. A total cop-out, not to mention a confusing mixed message.

The thing is, when you become a parent what you don’t realise is you’re required to set a good example and do the right thing. All. The. Time.

It’s difficult, it’s boring and, on occasion, the suppressed rebel in you (come on, admit it – we’ve all got one, to some degree) just wants to shout ‘Ner-ner-ner-ner-ner!’ and bend those rules just a little. Which is why, in a terrible display of hypocrisy, I have been known to hide my face in a kitchen cupboard while I quickly gobble down a chocolate biscuit just moments before tea’s ready (shocking!) or why I frequently stay up reading or watching TV way past my bedtime (which can safely go unnoticed, until the following day when I’m unreasonably grumpy) or why I sometimes choose to wear shoes that are neither sensible nor fit for the conditions, just because I want to (and usually instantly regret it). They’re not heinous crimes, I know, but I do feel guilty that I’m telling my children it’s important to do one thing, whilst sneakily doing the exact opposite.

I do, however, take solace in the fact that I’m certainly not alone in this inconsistency. We all do it – because we’re grown-ups, so we’re allowed.

Local History The First of the Many As we mark off the 100th anniversaries of the events of World War 1, many people’s thoughts turn to the names on the War Memorials.

One of the most touching stories is that of John Samuel Knowles, the first man from the town to die.

John Knowles (he rarely seemed to use the Samuel) was born in 1882 in a cottage at the corner of Riley Lane in Pentrich, the son of Joseph, a labourer, and Martha. He had 11 brothers and sisters.

He appears to have first joined the army in 1902, enlisting in the Dragoon Guards in Leicester. However, his record shows that, 6 weeks after joining, he was discharged, “having been claimed as an apprentice”. Whoever he was apprenticed to (and it might well have been the Butterley Company) objected to him joining up, and claimed him back. He apparently joined up again later, however, since he was discharged on 11th August 1905, with a reference as “a most reliable man” and was put on the reserve list.

He became a lay preacher and wrote notes for sermons, becoming very involved with Wood Street Methodist Church. In 1909 he started a football team called the Wood Street Primitives.

He also managed to buy a postcard of Le Havre on arrival in France.

The text read:

Dear Wife, We are now in France at Le Havre the place you see on card it’s very hot here but am first class only sea voyage upset me.

From loving husband John.

The postcards, eight of them, survive, and are followed by one field card, dated 9th September, an official card where the soldier crossed out alternatives. He declared himself “quite well”.

He died, aged 32, on 14th September, only 41 days after war was declared, leaving a widow and a five-year-old daughter.

He was by then a fettler, that is someone who was The Wood Street Primitives football team 1914-15 responsible for trimming off waste on mouldings, almost certainly at Butterley again.

Later he went back to mining, at Britain pit.

He was mobilised on the outbreak of war, as a lance corporal in the Coldstream Guards, and told to report to Chelsea barracks, a railway warrant for three shillings being provided for that purpose. He even managed to obtain a photograph of his battalion parading at Chelsea Barracks.

By the middle of August, his unit had been transferred to France.

He took with him to war a supply of postcards, and wrote regularly to his wife

Springtime is on its way and in this edition of All Things Local your local Safer Neighbourhood policing team would like to share their top tips to help you to protect your gardens and sheds.

• Ensure that valuables are kept out of view from passers-by and consider covering your windows from the inside to prevent thieves from taking a look;

With the weather improving you might be thinking about digging out the tools, and turning your attention to the garden but before you do, please give some thought to security around your sheds, garages, outbuildings and gardens.

• Don’t leave items in your garden that could make the life of a thief any easier. For example, a ladder left out in your garden could be used to get into the upper floor of your home or onto the top of your shed. Likewise, other tools and gardening equipment left outside could be used to break into your home.

Just taking a few minutes to lock these items away will greatly increase your security.

Many people will store valuable tools, bicycles, and barbecues in their sheds, which can make them more vulnerable to thieves. There are things you can do to reduce the risk of becoming a victim though, and these tips will help you to protect your belongings: • Fit a good quality lock to secure your shed, garage or outbuilding and make sure that it is appropriate to the strength of the door and frame;

• Mark all valuables with a property marking system such as SmartWater. This makes your belongings much less attractive to thieves as they realise that the goods can easily be identified as stolen and traced back to the original owner;
