Welcome to the October/November issue of All Things Local, as we move into autumn after a scorching hot summer.

While the sun and dry weather hasn’t been without its difficulties and nature is certainly crying out for some rainfall, we were able to enjoy some lovely weather and, despite a few occasions where it all got a bit much and we had to hide from the heat, it has afforded us plenty of opportunities to enjoy outdoor living and exploring our beautiful local area.

Autumn of course brings darker nights and usually more inclement weather, but there’s still a lot to look forward to!

This transitional season is associated with delicious foods and fruits, star gazing, autumnal walks, beautiful colours and, of course, the celebrations of Halloween and Bonfire Night.

Whether you go all out for a huge Halloween pageant as they do in America or prefer something a bit lower-key, you can enjoy all kinds of activities and events from fancy dress parties to carving pumpkins, bobbing apples or ‘Trick or Treating’.

Please be aware that not everyone celebrates this occasion and some may feel intimidated by it so, if you’re Trick or Treating, please only knock on doors where pumpkins are displayed. Likewise, while Bonfire Night is enjoyed by many, some people and pets can be fearful so please be considerate

of others when planning your events. Oh, and don’t forget to put your clocks back an hour on 30th October, otherwise you’ll be an hour early for your Halloween and bonfire parties!

So, to those who wish to throw themselves into trick or treat then I say have a spooktacular time (3!). If you wish to be present in a more pagan observance, then I wish you plentiful pumpkins and a happy harvest. And, to those who just wish it was November already and Halloween had been and gone, I truly respect your fears and want you to have the confidence to convey them.

Tell a friend, don’t be alone, pop a notice on your door and feel no shame. Let us all respect the wishes of others and enjoy our wants and needs kindly.

Ok, I will come down from the silly step. Halloween is a time of year that evokes a lot of different emotional responses. For some it is a time of fabulous fun, dressing up, trick or treating and copious amounts of sweetie eating. For others it is more traditional, drawing on the Gaelic festival of Samhain, marking the end of the harvest season and celebrating what has been while honouring the winter to come. There are those that it creates fear for, those with anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges. The elderly or those living alone may also feel scared by an unexpected knock at the door or a passing crowd of horror-clad kids. For me it is the time to demonstrate the fullness of our generosity of spirit (actually didn’t intend a pun there!). What I mean by this

7. Protective parents Octopuses are committed to the survival of their species.

Shortly after mating, the male octopus will die. After using up all their energy for growing and mating, they fade away.

The female octopus is so focused on the survival of her young that she neglects to feed herself. She protects them from predators and provides them with oxygen until they hatch. Shortly after, she will die.

Fans can look forward to spending 24 hours in admiration of these charming cephalopods.

The popular Netflix film, My Octopus Teacher, documented the relationship between the filmmaker and an octopus he visited daily. This eye-opening portrayal gave viewers an insight into the lives and abilities of these eight-limbed creatures.

So what makes the octopus so fascinating?

Here are 8 facts about them: 1. They’ve got big brains Considered to be very intelligent, captive octopuses have managed daring and clever escapes from their tanks. They can navigate mazes and even unscrew jars. In the wild, they construct elaborate hiding places and protective barriers.

Paradoxically, for a creature of such intelligence, they live relatively short lives. Most octopus species only live for one or two years.

2. There are many species The octopus is a cephalopod. The word cephalopod means ‘head foot’ in Greek, given that their heads and feet are connected. This group of marine invertebrates also includes squid, cuttlefish and nautilus along with other species. In fact, there are over 800 recorded species so far with more to be discovered.

3. Graceful movers Like other cephalopods, the octopus propels itself through the ocean using jets of water. They fill their body cavity with water then squirt it through a syphon. They can also walk or crawl on the ocean floor using their strong tentacles. The common octopus can swim at speeds of nearly 25 miles per hour!

4. Fascinating anatomy The octopus uses its suckers for grabbing prey, manipulating objects and even tasting. They also have three hearts. Their powerful beak lets them crack open shells with ease. Their lack of skeleton means they can squeeze into the smallest of spaces. The blue-ringed octopus is venomous and known to be one of the most deadly creatures in the sea.

5. Camouflage experts Octopus skin changes colour to help them blend in with their surroundings. The mimic octopus goes one stage further. It impersonates other sea-dwelling creatures to protect itself from predators. Amongst others, it can disguise itself as a sea snake, a lionfish and an eel.

6. They regenerate arms If they lose a limb, they grow another one. Sometimes an octopus sacrifices a limb to escape the jaws of a predator.

8. Different sizes There are a huge variety of octopuses. The giant Pacific octopus is the largest species in the world. They can measure over 15 feet long and weigh up to 50 kilograms.

The smallest octopus is octopus wolfi. This little specimen can sit on the tip of your finger and weighs less than a gram.

The most commonly used plural for the octopus is octopuses, but using octopi is perfectly acceptable.

Often considered as the aliens of the sea, they are definitely different.

Word on Wine I was recently introduced to a new, local wine from Amber Valley Wines with grapes grown by Barry Lewis on his vineyard in Wessington near Alfreton.

In 2020 he made an experimental batch of wine at home, using an old technique which successfully produced an interesting wine. Barry took a bottle to the vintners at Three Choirs, who have made and bottled his wine in previous years. They liked it so much that they agreed to take a quantity of Barry’s white grapes and replicate the wine.

As it was an unusual wine they also decided to make a batch with their own grapes, resulting in their version of the wine which has since been awarded a trophy in the Wines of Great Britain 2022.

The wine is called ‘Amber’, not after the vineyard, but the technique which originated in Armenia and Georgia possibly 6000 years ago. This area of Asia is believed to be where wine making started, using indigenous grape vines of the region.

The ‘Amber’ wine, sometimes referred to as ‘Golden’, is made by allowing the white grape skins to be oxidized during the fermentation of the wine. Over a period of time the skins, which turn brown, are pushed down into the wine allowing different skins to surface, giving the wine an amber/golden colour. This wine has a third of the wine aged in oak barriques

and is naturally unfiltered or unfined at bottling. The wine can be a bit of a ‘marmite’ wine, as the finished dry wine will have the slight smell and taste that we sometimes associate with wine that is undrinkable.

Beer: Beer Speak Many beer drinkers have learned to navigate a tap list or an array of pump clips to get the beer they want, but our discussion around beers usually starts and ends with “What would you like?” and “Yeah, it’s great.”

I believe that people inside the craft beer bubble vastly overestimate the public’s knowledge and interest level. The word ‘session’ is a great example. In the UK it is often used as a term to indicate a low-ABV beer. When I’m standing with a friend in front of a beer list they’ll often idly ask the meaning of an unfamiliar word, but I’ve generally lost them halfway through my explanation!

I’d guess people understand maybe a half-dozen beer terms, and all incompletely. Lager is shorthand for ‘regular beer.’ It applies to domestic, green-bottle European and Mexican beer.

If someone orders a doppelbock and later learns it’s a lager, they will probably be confused. It’s nothing like Budweiser!

They know IPAs will have a particular flavour profile and have learned whether they like ‘hazy’ or ‘west coast’ for ordering purposes. In most cases they won’t know the flavours they like come from hops or, if they do, they won’t know whether they come from kettle additions or dry-hopping – and they won’t care, no matter how fascinating you find biotransformation.

If IPA isn’t their favourite style, they’ll know the word for the beers that are. That might be a style (porter, pilsner), but it might also be a beer (Blue Moon, Guinness).

I get why they don’t know; craft beer is insanely complex.

Looking at a tap list is a bit like scrutinising a foreign language.

There’s a Saison, a Vienna lager, a Helles, a Baltic porter, an ESB, something called a DDH DIPA and a wine-barrel-aged “mixed-ferm” wild ale. Really, mixed-ferm? Few beer geeks really understand that garble, I would guess.

The one thing I would say to brewers, as an emissary from real Beerlandia, is that if you do choose to put ‘session’ on your label, just know that customers won’t understand that term in the way you do. The vast majority of regular beer drinkers just want a tasty pint and the shortest conceptual route it takes to get there.

Recipe Fish Stew Hearty and wholesome, this vibrant fish stew makes the perfect midweek meal.

Serves: 4 Preparation time: 8 minutes Cooking time: 15-20 minutes Ingredients: 1 tbsp sunflower oil 225g carrots, peeled and cut into small pieces 1 onion, peeled and thinly sliced 1 clove garlic, peeled and chopped 1 x 400g can chopped tomatoes A handful of pitted black olives 1 bay leaf Salt and freshly ground black pepper 550g skinned and cubed white fish (cod, coley, pollock, hake) 115g mussels, debearded and cleaned Chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley, to garnish Crusty bread, to serve (optional) For more seafood and fish recipe inspiration, visit seafish.org.

Method: Heat the oil in a saucepan, add the carrots, onion and garlic and cook for 2-3 minutes.

Stir in the chopped tomatoes, olives and bay leaf, and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Add the fish cubes and cook for another 8-10 minutes.

Discard any of the cleaned mussels that do not close when tapped, or that are damaged or broken. Add the remaining mussels to the pan and cook for 2-4 minutes to heat through. Discard any mussels that remain closed.

Pile into a large warm serving bowl, sprinkle over the chopped parsley and serve with lots of crusty bread.

Serve hot or cold.

Fitness Matters What Are the Benefits of Exercise for Older Adults?

There are many reasons why we tend to slow down and become more sedentary with age. It could be health problems, weight or pain issues, concerns about falling, or perhaps you think exercise simply isn’t for you?

However, as you grow older, an active lifestyle becomes more important than ever to your health.

A recent Swedish study found that physical activity was the number one contributor to longevity, adding extra years to your life - even if you don’t start exercising until your senior years. But getting active is not just about adding years to your life, it’s about adding life to your years.

Getting moving can help boost your energy, maintain your independence, protect your heart, and manage symptoms of illness or pain as well as your weight. Regular exercise is also good for mind, mood, and memory. It’s never too late to find simple, enjoyable ways to become more active and reap the physical and mental health benefits of exercise.

As you get older you may find you have more barriers to overcome when starting to build exercise into your routine.

These can include discomfort and pain in your joints, limited mobility, or maybe a chronic condition such as arthritis or heart disease. I’d recommend speaking to a health care provider if you’re thinking of taking up exercise, although most doctors will encourage you to do so as many conditions benefit from regular exercise, including joint discomfort.

Don’t let fear of injury hold you back as balance and strength training can help to reduce the risk of falling, or swimming can help build up your confidence and fitness. If you’re affected by loneliness or isolation, group fitness activities or classes are a great way to help with your health whilst meeting like-minded people.

I really do hope that this motivates even one person to realise that it’s not about how old you are. Age is just a number – you can still have goals you want to achieve and go for it; I have a few older generation clients and they inspire me!

Derbyshire Walking: Baslow Edge and Wellington’s Monument Distance – 3.5 miles / 5.7 km Ascent – 450 feet / 136 metres Time – 2 hours 10 minutes Grade – Easy Author – Lou Johnson Start – Ordnance Survey Grid Ref SK262747 Postcode S32 3YR (approx location only) what3words start: acquaint.perplexed.drifting This short Peak District walk is an ideal introduction to the gritstone edges of the Peak District and can easily be completed in a couple of hours. There is a small car park (grid ref. SK261747) sited just back from Baslow Edge on the lane that climbs east out of Curbar towards the A621 Baslow to Sheffield main road. Alternatively you can park on the roadside in the immediate vicinity.

Even before you start you get a good idea of what the walk will be like. The views to the west are open with the River Derwent meandering through the valley below.

The walk is much easier to complete than to describe so please bear with me if the description seems rather complex!

The Route 1. From the car park head west down the lane towards Curbar village for a few hundred metres.

On the left is a footpath sign pointing south. In reality there are a number of parallel paths; follow one of these in the direction of Baslow village for nearly a kilometre.

2. Ignore the path veering right towards the Edge and go through the gate, following the path which crosses meadows to eventually pick up a track leading to Lady Wall Well.

3. There is a trough on your left and just after this turn left up a track, taking a left fork shortly afterwards. This leads upwards to reach the boundary of ‘Open Country’ to pass a quarry.

4. Quite quickly you are on the Edge with the moorland plateau stretching east towards Sheffield. Wellington’s Monument is a local landmark and it has been in view from just before the quarry. From here there are good views south towards Chatsworth and beyond.

5. After taking in the view turn around and head north using the path that follows the Edge, ignoring any path on your left that descends off the Edge.

After a pleasant stroll on level ground you are soon back at your car.

Footnotes We really do take our feet for granted don’t we? After all, they are only feet aren’t they? Perhaps we should think a little bit more about what these unglamorous parts of the body do for us!

Each foot contains 26 bones – that’s 52 bones between them or, in other words, over a quarter of the body’s 206 bones. The way that these bones work with each other gives approximately 40 joints in each foot! The joint behind the big toe takes approximately one and a half times your bodyweight each and every time you take a step.

Not bad for a joint not much bigger than an Oxo cube.

They give us constant feedback about the surface we are walking on and, thanks to all those bones, joints and untold ligaments and muscles, both in the foot and the lower leg, enable us to walk and balance safely on very uneven ground. Even the toenails have an active role by protecting the toes and helping with balance. The skin is three to four times thicker on the heel and ball of the foot than anywhere else on the body, offering protection to the bones and muscles of the foot in everyday use. We even have a pad of fat under the foot which acts as a natural shock absorber which again protects the underlying tissues.

Motoring The Best Used Hybrid Cars worth Checking out Today Though there’s a real push toward full-electric vehicles, for many people a hybrid vehicle is a great fit. Combining an internal combustion engine with an electric motor and battery means a traditional engine to fall back on, but with the opportunity to benefit from the lower running costs that electrification brings.

Fortunately, hybrids have been on sale for a little while now, so there is a reasonable number available in the used market. Let’s take a look.

Honda CR-Z The CR-Z arrived in 2010 as a sporty hybrid and thus featured an eye-catching exterior design and a relatively compact body. It combined a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and battery and, strangely for a hybrid, had a six-speed manual gearbox.

But today, with prices hovering around £5,000, the CR-Z makes for an inexpensive left-field hybrid choice.

It’ll return over 52mpg and cost just £20 to tax.

Lexus CT Lexus has been using electrical assistance in its cars for quite some time now and has the technology down to a fine art. The CT, a slightly elongated hatchback with a typically sharp Lexus design, is a ‘regular’ hybrid with a 1.8-litre engine and an electric motor and battery.

Later models use a 1.8-litre engine – compared with the older 1.5-litre version – but you’ll still get a very respectable 70.6mpg combined, so it’s ideal for reducing fuel bills.

Mitsubishi Outlander The Outlander was one of the ground-breaking hybrid models, and the plug-in hybrid is the go-to choice as it offers super-efficient motoring and the chance of seeing up to 156mpg providing you keep it topped up with electricity.

Prices are competitive, with second-generation cars built around 2015 standing at around £17,000. It’s a big, practical car for the money.

Volkswagen Golf GTE Fancy something a little sportier? The Golf GTE aimed to combine Golf GTi driver involvement with the efficient running of a hybrid. With a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine and an electric motor with a battery, this plug-in hybrid can slot into everyday life easily.

First-generation cars – built around 2015 – can be had for as little as £12,000, though expect to pay slightly more for lower-mileage, higher-spec versions.

It’s exempt from London’s Ultra Low Emissions Zone charge, too. Early, high-mileage examples can be had for around £5,500, but reasonable-mileage versions with plenty of equipment are around the £10,000 mark.

BMW 530e The BMW 530e could be a great more-refined option.

It’s as comfortable and spacious as the regular 5, but has that efficient petrol-electric hybrid setup to help reduce fuel bills.

Toyota Prius There are few better-known names in the hybrid world than Prius and it’s now a very tried-and-tested option. There are plenty of used examples, too, with

Gardening Garden Tasks and Treats for October As we dip into the mellow days of autumn, it’s a good time to reach for the camera.

The light levels are often perfect for photography in the garden. Capture those glistening spiders’ webs and moisture droplets that decorate leaves. Soak up every moment of the golden times when long shadows make great shots. There is generally less pollution in autumn due to cooler weather, and skies tend to be clearer.

October can catch you out. There are days that feel like an Indian summer, with bright blue skies and sun that warms, but also unexpected frosts. Protect vulnerable plants by moving them to sheltered sites, or cover them in horticultural fleece.

During this magical month, don’t miss the petrichor!

It’s a real treat, and is the scent of rain that arises from damp earth after it falls on dry soil. This is a time to savour the daylight, knowing it will be seeping gradually away. But rather than mourn the loss of longer days, there’s work to be done outdoors as you need to get your garden in order to make it winter-ready.

• Stop and think before you cut things back during autumn pruning. Many plants have high feed value for garden birds. The seeds provide food and the leaves and stems offer shelter for birds, small mammals and mini-beasts. Leave them in situ if you can.

• Collect seeds for propagation. Many of them can be sown right away, but some can be scattered later. Check the preferences of each type of seed, as some require ‘cold stratification’, where they need to undergo a cold period before they are likely to germinate. They include many acer trees, most shrubs such as cornus (dogwood) and forsythia, clematis and perennials including lavender, nepeta, sedum and rudbeckia.

• This is a perfect pruning time for certain climbers and shrubs. Beware of cutting into old wood on lavender and rosemary, however. You can prune shrub roses and soft fruit bushes. Cut hedges without too much fear of disturbing bird nests and consider giving your hedge a mulch around the base. Always check before adding fresh wood chippings, however.

Some newly shredded wood can change the pH value of the soil and others might deplete nitrogen levels in the ground underneath.

• Lawn lovers will be in their element during October, as this is a good time to rake out the thatch and apply autumn lawn fertiliser. Trim the lawn edges to give it a crisp shape that should last until spring.

• Before leaves are filling up every crevice and corner, remember to cover ponds using fine mesh. It will

Property Matters Don’t Delay, Act Today!

Things Always Take Longer Than You Think We’ve noticed over the years that homeowners want their extension finished and ready for the summer, or by Christmas – and you can understand why. Unfortunately, however, most homeowners start to think about things a couple of months too late. We get calls in early January from customers wanting a summer completion when they really needed to start the ball rolling in November or December. Similarly we get calls in the height of summer when Easter is a better bet for a Christmas completion.

Here’s why: 1. Design lead in – even in these times any designer worth his salt has some work on his books. Be suspicious of someone who can start right away. At least two weeks lead in is reasonable 2. Survey and design time – Your designer needs to make a measured survey of your house, then discuss your needs and wishes, draw up a design and amend it a couple of times until you’re happy with it. This can easily take two to three weeks.

3. Planning application – The finished design will often require planning permission. If it goes smoothly this can take up to eight weeks.

4. Production drawings – You should always wait for planning approval before proceeding with the more detailed technical drawings as these can be difficult and expensive to change should the planners require any amendments to the layout. These drawings can take another two weeks to produce.

5. Building Regulations approval and tendering – You can run these concurrently, but they will both take more or less another three weeks.

6. Construction phase – Depending on the size and complexity this can vary from 6 weeks to 6 months, but on average most extensions are built in ten to twelve weeks.

This gives you a total of between six and seven months from start to finish.

So, don’t delay! If you’re planning on an extension that is going to require planning approval, give us a call today in readiness for completion in the summer months.

Parenting: Do Try This at Home…

Fun science experiments that the whole family will enjoy!

A homemade lava lamp

This lava lamp is short-lived, but pretty magical.

You’ll need: • A glass • Vegetable oil • Water • A bright food colouring (e.g. red or green) • An Alka-Seltzer tablet What to do: Fill the glass to about halfway with vegetable oil. Add around a fifth of a glass of water. Add around 10 drops of food colouring. Drop in the Alka-Seltzer tablet and watch the marvel unfold.

Why it works The flowers ‘drink’ the water and move it to the petals.

Runaway milk

Don’t worry, this is a lot less messy than it sounds!

Why it works: The oil floats on the water. When you drop the tablet in, it reacts with the water to make carbon dioxide bubbles. They carry the coloured water to the top, before popping and sinking back down.

You’ll need: • A plate or wide, shallow bowl • Full fat milk • Food colouring (ideally three different colours) • Washing-up liquid

Colour changing flowers

What to do Pour some milk into the plate. (You only need it to be around a centimetre deep.) Add a few drops of food colouring in different areas. Not too many, there should be large gaps between each one. Dip a finger in the washing-up liquid and then touch one of the spots of food colouring. Repeat with other spots of food colouring. The colour will swirl away from your touch.

This one requires a bit of patience but minimum effort.

You’ll need: • White flowers (ideally largish ones, rather than daisies) • Glass jars or drinking glasses • Food colourings (ideally at least three different ones) • Water What to do Fill each jar half-full with water. Add at least 10 drops of food colouring to each jar, so each one has different coloured water. Cut each flower stem

Why it works The milk and washing-up liquid can’t mix. What you’re seeing is the fat particles swirling away from the washing-up liquid. Don’t have food colouring?

Try touching a felt tip pen to the milk instead.

Coast to Coast Sponsored Bike Ride The average individual conducting a longdistance bicycle tour will cycle between 40 and 60 miles (64-96 kilometres) each day.

40 to 60 miles is the average daily distance recommended for most bicycle tourists, but if the start point is somewhere that is unfamiliar, it is strongly advised that this distance is cut down significantly, to account for any delays and mishaps that may occur. Seemingly, this was not going to limit one of our Belper students in a cycling challenge of a lifetime.

James Bridges, a sixth form student at Belper School and a keen cyclist, decided to push his cycling limits to undertake a coast to coast bike ride from Liverpool to Skegness in a limited time frame. During the half term break, in addition to studying for mock exams and completing coursework and work deadlines, James wanted to add another task into his already full schedule.

It seems having a week off from study after a demanding first year of A Levels was never on the cards!

In total, this was James’ largest ever trek of 196 miles over a course of just 3 days – what a challenge! Alongside the challenge of the journey, James wanted to raise some vital funds for a local charity: Blue Box Belper. The charity is hoping to raise £350,000 to build a new community centre in the Belper Parks estate which will be used for numerous groups and activities, such as the Blend Youth Group (for

11-18 year olds) and social groups for local residents to improve our community and lives.

Onward with the challenge! James’ previous cycling record was 67 miles and his training has been built through cycles with his local cycle group, getting up to 40 miles. So this challenge was his toughest, but equally most rewarding yet. He set off from Liverpool at 11am on Thursday 2nd June and made it to Langley, near Macclesfield. His second day, in James’ words, was ‘by far the hardest’. Dealing with fatigue and pain was tough, but making it to Belper and having lunch after 41 miles certainly spurred him on to continue and make a further 30 miles – 71 miles in one day is no mean feat, especially with one more day to go. Tuxford was the beginning of the last day’s ride. 60 miles to go and, perhaps more importantly, a fish and chip lunch awaiting! The latter certainly pushed James to get to Skegness sea front for his strong finish.

From Belper School and the community, congratulations, James, on not only achieving a momentous goal, but also for raising over £1,000 (and counting) for the Blue Box Belper charity.

What an inspiration! Also, a big well done to James’ family for transiting James to and from his start and end points so that he could rest at home in between days.

The Diary of a Local Mum Picking up the Pieces

There are undeniably lots of highs of parenthood. Those happy moments, memories to treasure, times when your heart swells to bursting with pride… but, as we all know, with the highs come plenty of lows. There are points in the parenting journey where you pause and think ‘Really?!? Is this my life?’

Usually this realisation hits pretty hard within the first few days of becoming a parent as you’re wading zombie-like through sleepless nights and endless days, or dealing with your first poonami (seriously, how can all that mess come from something so small and cute?!?). Then, there are the glory days of cleaning up sick or endless nit-combing … this parenting lark is certainly not all glamour!

But, nothing is as bad as when things go wrong for your kids. Whether it’s losing their favourite toy or blanket, grazing their knee in the playground, falling out with friends, having their heart broken, not making the team or missing out on that grade, there are so many times in life when things just don’t quite go our way, and seeing it happen to your kids is like torture.

If you could swap places and absorb the pain yourself, you would.

As a parent, your first instinct is to try and ‘fix’ the problem but often it’s sadly not quite that easy. Tempting as it is, it’s not always possible or, even if it is, it’s not always the right approach.

Life can be cruel and sometimes your role is just to be there to help them weather the storm, learning how to navigate their own way through the inevitable ups and downs. Most of us would love for our kids to experience a life full of endless sunshine but it’s just not practical.

Part of our role as parents is to help them learn what to do in the rain and, at the risk of taking this metaphor too far, we can’t always be there with an umbrella!

However, giving kids of any age a helping hand when times are tough is challenging in itself.

How far do we go to intervene? Knowing we can’t take their pain away entirely is hard, so to what extent should we try to alleviate it? Is being there as a shoulder to cry on enough? And what do we do when they push us away? Sometimes they want their own space to deal with things … but give them too much time and space and they’ll feel like they’re alone. Conversely, intervening too much can make them feel stifled.

It’s a minefield! We know, rationally, that they need to grow and learn – we’ve all had to do it – but standing on the sidelines as your child copes with difficult situations is so, so hard.

Sometimes, with the benefit of life experience, you can see that the problem isn’t actually all that huge – having been on this planet for many more years then they have, you know that, in the grand scheme of things, this ‘catastrophic event’ is a mere bump in the road that will be forgotten in a few hours/tomorrow/next week (or, in the case of a toddler who’s inconsolable because their favourite spoon is in the dishwasher, just a few minutes!). But telling a child of any age that whatever’s rocked their world is ‘unimportant’ is categorically NOT the right thing to say! In their mind it’s allconsuming, so we have to respect the way it’s making them feel, with no judgement.

Whatever life throws at them, knowing that you’re a solid, reliable rock within their sea of uncertainty will help. As parents we can’t always prevent things from being broken, but we can be there to help pick up the pieces.

Local History

Belper People of the Past: Elizabeth Grummit Kiddy Ashton Near the top of the Market Place is an imposing three-storey building, now a hairdresser and beauty salon. For many years it was a druggists (the old name for a pharmacy) owned by Samuel Kiddy. Elizabeth Grummit moved there when she married Samuel in 1855.

Elizabeth was born in 1828 into a farming family at Elsthorpe Grange, Lincolnshire. At the age of 27 she accepted a marriage proposal from the fifty-year-old Samuel Kiddy. Samuel had his finger in many pies.

He held a position on Belper Waterworks, was a Guardian at Belper Workhouse, a churchwarden at St Peter’s and served on the Carnival Committee.

He was a Freemason, a dealer of nails and lead and rented land near the station from the Strutt Estate where he was complemented on the excellence of his turnips. In the recession of 1855, together with other businessmen, he set up a soup kitchen for the poor which he promised would continue every week “so long as trade continues in so depressed a state”.

Elizabeth would have enjoyed being the wife of an influential Belper businessman. In an age when women’s prospects were limited she had found a new way of life away from the farm and had a comfortable life above the shop with a servant. Years before his marriage Samuel had taken in his young nephew, John Ashton, to train as an apprentice. Later John took over management of Samuel’s second shop in Ripley and married Ellen Hall. They had six children but five died in infancy and one child, Arthur William, survived.

Unfortunately in 1878 John’s wife Ellen died, leaving him to bring up the five-year-old boy.

Elizabeth and Samuel had 24 years of marriage, but no children. Samuel died in 1879 at the age of 74 and was buried with all honours in St Peter’s Churchyard.

After Samuel’s death John took over the Belper shop, something he and his uncle may have been working towards since John’s childhood.

The widow Elizabeth moved to Rotherhithe, London where she had friends or family. Then things moved quickly. Within a year of Samuel’s death John proposed to her and they were married in Rotherhithe in 1880. He was five years her junior and they had known each other for about 25 years.

Belper eyebrows would have been raised at the speed of their marriage after their spouses’ deaths, but it was very convenient for both parties. It must have been gratifying to Elizabeth to come back to her old home on the Market Place. They re-named the business Kiddy & Ashton, but sadly the couple had little time together as John died in 1882. She arranged for his burial in Belper Cemetery next to his first wife with a memorial inscription to Ellen and their five lost children: “They are without fault before the throne of God.”

Elizabeth promptly sold the business and moved with her stepson Arthur into Ashton’s old house on New Road, supported by a couple of servants. The Census of 1891 is the last record I can find for her. Arthur flourished as a farmer, married Emily Adshead of Fenny Bentley Hall, then later became a druggist like his father. A daughter was born in 1905 but Arthur was killed in the First World War. Elizabeth Ashton disappears from the records and in spite of help from a researcher more skilled than I am, her subsequent life remains a mystery.

Charles Southern bought the business from Elizabeth.

He also married a widow – but that’s another story…

Upbeat Variety of Scams Reported in Derbyshire Technology is an important part of our lives, but sadly it can make us vulnerable, too. We do see a variety of scams in Derbyshire, with some targeting people who perhaps aren’t as confident using technology. However, it is important to remember that these cons can be sophisticated and catch out even the most tech-savvy of people.

One tactic is messages, often on Whatsapp, beginning ‘Hi Mum’ or ‘Hi Dad’. The scammer pretends to be a friend or family member who has broken their phone and is messaging from a new number. They will urgently ask for money transferring to pay for a replacement or general bills. These scams can be quite convincing, and there have been cases nationally where the victim transferred multiple amounts of money before realising the recipient wasn’t who they thought.

Detective Constable Tammy Barnes, Fraud Protect Officer, said: “Being contacted urgently by a relative is always

concerning, and the desire to help in an emergency is what the criminals are relying on. If you ever get a message from a friend or family member that you think is suspicious, especially when they ask for money or personal details, always call them and confirm their identity before doing anything else.”

We’ve also seen cases of fraud by buyers on Facebook Marketplace presenting fake screenshots to prove payment and leaving the sellers out of pocket. If you are selling something, always check your own bank account to make sure the money has cleared before parting with any goods. If the purchase is online, use trusted web links and not those supplied by the buyer.

Technology, for most, makes our daily lives easier.

Unfortunately, this is also true for criminals. Follow Action Fraud’s Take Five to Stop Fraud to protect yourself: 1. Stop – Take five minutes to stop and think before parting with your money or information.

2. Challenge – Could it be fake? It’s okay to reject, refuse or ignore any requests. Only criminals will try to rush or panic you.

3. Protect - If you think you’ve been a victim of fraud, contact your bank immediately and report it to Action Fraud online or by calling 0300 123 2040.

Despite being retired Carole still continues this work to ensure that the children she works with receive the support they need.

She does all this whilst also carrying out charity work & helping her neighbours, friends & family with whatever she can. She carries out charity work for numerous organisations but mainly for Nepal & homeless charities. Carole is never someone to ask for anything for herself & always puts everyone else first, so I think it would be wonderful if she was the person receiving something for a change.
