Hello readers Welcome to the autumn edition.

Well, a lot has happened since I last checked in with you.

The Rio Olympics were fantastic and our home-grown athletes gave us all something to celebrate and be positive about. Well done to Team GB! How many young, local people will have been inspired by such incredible talent?

Whilst the Olympics were in full flow, a lesser-known and rather whacky ‘worldwide’ competition took place in our very own county; The World Hen Racing Championships!

This is an annual affair hosted by The Barley Mow public house at Bonsall. It’s a great family afternoon out and the competing hens really do seem to enjoy their very own day at the races! It’s held on the first Saturday in August – a date for next year’s diary already!

Roy and I have expanded our property portfolio …

OK, that’s a bit of an exaggeration since we still only have the house we live in … but we’ve now bought a caravan so does that count??! We’re getting to the age where crawling on hands and knees in and out of tents and sleeping on airbeds that choose to deflate of their own accord (usually in the middle of the night) isn’t as much fun as it used to be! I have such happy memories of caravanning as a child, and all those great memories came flooding back as soon as we spent our first weekend in ‘Major Tom’ our very own tin can. Roy’s idol was David Bowie …

Money Matters: Dedication, Research, Goals and Talent The Olympics are over for another 4 years. In just over 2 weeks, years of hard work by the athletes, sports men and women saw Team GB realise a record haul of 67 medals. Of course the results speak for themselves but behind the results went a lot of planning, effort and commitment by the team, their coaches, mentors and families.

Significant financial results also require much planning and effort too. Sound planning and financial principles can hopefully result in you achieving retirement and savings goals. You need it next to you during the five minutes it’ll take you to read this. However, it should be lucrative. Our wallets are a treasure trove of financial information.

One of my party tricks is to take a look at someone’s and save them £100s in minutes – and now I want to do it for you. This is my wallet workout, a self-inspection of contents to save you cash.

1. Pull out your debit card – do you have a winner?

A debit card reveals where you bank; and mistakes there are aplenty.

Do you pay a monthly fee? If so, work out its annual cost (£15/month = £180) and then ask yourself if the ‘extras’ the bank gives are worth this. If not, cancel it. Plus, if you were flogged it or told you had to have it, you may be able to reclaim all packaged bank account fees (see www.mse.me/reclaimpackagefees).

Does your bank make you happy? If not, then www.FirstDirect.com is worth considering switching to. It’s a fee-free account (as long as you pay in £1,000 a month), pays switchers £100 and has a linked 6% savings account. It’s won every service poll I’ve ever done, with 92% of its customers rating it ‘great’. Or www.Co-operativeBank.co.uk is giving £150, plus up to £5.50 if you qualify for its Everyday Rewards scheme, and 70% of its customers rate it ‘great’.

Are you overdrawn? Debit cards can be debt cards too, and sometimes costlier than credit. For small overdrafts, you can switch again to www.FirstDirect.com which gives a £250 0% overdraft, and the £100 switch bonus will help clear some of it. Or the www.Nationwide.co.uk FlexDirect gives a 0% overdraft for the first 12 months. For larger amounts, you can use special 0% credit cards to clear it - see www.mse.me/ moneytransfers Do you have savings? If so, use your bank account to max the interest, as some now pay by far the highest interest on savings. The top picks are www.Santander.co.uk’s 123, which pays 3% on up to £20,000 and www.LloydsBank.com’s ClubLloyds, which pays 4% on £4,000-£5,000. There’s also the www.Tsb.co.uk Classic Plus, which pays 5% on up to £2,000, plus up to £5-a-month cashback on contactless purchases.

2. Pull out your photo driving licence – is it valid?

A whopping 2.2 million licences have a picture that’s out of date. To check yours, look at section 4b on your photocard licence, it’ll show the expiry date. If you don’t and it’s expired, you risk a fine of up to £1,000. You can renew it online at www.gov.uk/renew-driving-licence or at the post office.

3. Got a credit card(s) that you pay interest on? STOP It’s possible to save £100s or even £1,000s a year by getting a 0% balance transfer credit card – that’s where the new card pays off debt on old cards for you, so you owe it instead, but at 0%. This means more of your repayments clear the actual debt rather than just paying the interest, making you debt-free quicker.

There’s up to 40 months 0% available with a fee, or 24 months 0% fee-free. My full best balance transfers guide at www.moneysavingexpert.com/bts includes a free eligibility calculator which gives card-by-card odds of which you’re most likely to get – so you can home in on your winner.

Savings can be huge, as Victoria tweeted me: “I got my fiancé to transfer his credit card balances to a 0%, saved £1,500 interest.”

4. Do you have a donor card?

It’s a big decision, but joining the Organ Donor Register could mean you save or improve up to nine lives. If it’s for you, sign up at www.organdonation.nhs.uk or call 0300 123 23 23.

5. Got a credit card and always repay in full? Make it PAY YOU Every time you use a card, the retailer pays the card firm a transaction fee. With a cashback card, you effectively get this put back in your pocket. As new regulations have cut these fees recently, cashback’s been cut too, yet Amex cards are mostly exempted, so still pay a good whack.

The fee-free www.AmericanExpress.com Everyday pays 5% cashback (max £100) for the first three months, then tiered up to 1.25% after. The best non-Amex is http:// money.asda.com Mastercard which pays 0.5% cashback (1% in Asda). As Anna tweeted me: “@MartinSLewis Glad I read about Amex cashback card: I’ll get over £200 paid.”

Yet only do this if you’ll set up a direct debit to repay IN FULL each month or you’ll pay 22.9% (Amex) or 18.9% (Asda) rep APR interest, which more than wipes the cashback gain.

6. Sign up for a myWaitrose card for FREE daily tea and coffee Get the www.waitrose.com loyalty card – then in most stores you can get a totally free takeaway hot drink, every day from the self-service machine without buying anything.

7. Not got a credit card…? You’re less protected Pay using a credit card and you get extra protection under the ‘Section 75 law’ – which means buy something costing between £100 and £30,000 on a credit card, and pay for any of it (even 1p) on it, and the card firm’s jointly liable with the retailer for the entire amount.

This get-out-of-jail-free card is hugely powerful if the retailer goes bust or won’t play fair, as Michelle found. She tweeted: “Successful Section 75 credit card claim, refunded £125 for non-delivery of phone order, used template on your website, thanks.”

PS: If you’ve been burnt with credit cards in the past, or have little financial discipline, then ignore this point. Better safe than sorry.

Just a Thought...

The Art of Sharing Sharing is a concept many of us are familiar with and some are inherently better at it than others. It’s something that we are usually introduced to as small children, being told by our parents to ‘play nicely and share our toys’. It is an essential skill for life and one that can bring much joy to all parties involved.

I have fond memories of sharing rather decadent desserts with friends, the feel good factor being palpable. I’ve often shared a secret with a close friend and sometimes a worry too and in both cases the act of sharing has brought clarity to an otherwise clouded situation.

However, it has recently occurred to me that there is an etiquette, nay, an art to sharing.

Whilst doing my food shopping this week I

was privy to a rather ‘interesting’ conversation between two women. Exchanging life’s issues with other people is like breathing, it is an absolute must to ensure life thrives. This conversation, however, was probably shared a little too fully.

I’ve no objection to hearing about Sandra’s husband’s medical issues, but being talked through the somewhat graphic results of his various allergic reactions and the variety of ensuing bodily fluids is, I feel, a bridge too far. They say there is a time and a place for everything and, dear ladies, this was definitely not it. Please do not stop sharing things you hold dear, but maybe some things shouldn’t be shared in the queue at the Co-op!

The Better Life The Joy of Camping We Better Lifers love to bask in the reflected glory of a productive garden, water butts and compost bins all present and correct, and a house that whispers “Eco-friendly.”

However, come the summer (when we get one) a mania overtakes us; we succumb to the notion that leaving it all behind for a week or two under canvas is just what the doctor ordered. If the doctor were a sadist, that is.

First there’s the frantic search for all the equipment you swore you’d never need again. The same equipment you helpfully dispersed into as many cupboards and rooms as possible. Then, when you’ve located everything – or given up the ghost and bought replacements – you draw up a to-do list for your neighbour: tend to the cat, irrigate the garden (it sounds much more accomplished than ‘water’) and fight the good fight against marauding molluscs.

After that, with a clear conscience and green-tinted glasses, you can pack up and head into the wilderness.

Well, a wilderness with a toilet block, shower facilities, recycling area and an Internet café. Okay, I may have exaggerated about that last one.

The days of alfresco eating (or wasp ballet), donating blood to the local mosquitoes and accidental nettle stings – are there any other kind? – effortlessly blend and, before you’re ready, the last day arrives.

The rubbish is removed, along with any litter you see on the way; the tent wrestled back into its bag and the postcards you forgot to send are posted on the way out.

These are mostly to people you’ll be telephoning when you get home.

Then, as you survey the pallid grass where your temporary home used to stand, one of you will amiably suggest that, all in all, it was great fun – same time again next year?

Why not, the other will agree, adding an extra touch of citronella for the journey home, why not indeed?

What could be more relaxing than the peaceful sounds of the countryside? Although the dawn chorus – from nearby tents – of snoring, hayfever and other noises is like a trumpeting ensemble to the gods. Sometimes, when you tuck into your farm-made yogurt, seated on recycled wooden pallet benches, you can even catch harmonies.

Those same delightful neighbours may wander back late from the village pub, drunk and incoherent, whispering louder than a jet engine. And what camping experience would be complete without the melodic drone of someone on a mobile declaring, “I’m in a tent – go on, guess where?” The Arctic, you may wish malignly.

The weather, of course, conspires to keep you in a state of perpetual moistness. Whether it’s damp clothing – silly you for having brought only one pair of walking boots – or an unexpectedly warm summer evening, turning your camping fleece into a water-retaining sauna, you can be sure that the heady scent of sweat and disdain will linger in your nostrils for days to come.

Making tea on an incline is like participating in a health and safety film. The groundsheet, thankfully, is waterproof, though not, alas, melt-proof. Still, it’s all part of living among the elements. There’s plenty of wildlife too and most of it is set on getting inside your tent. Not the birds though – they’re too canny for that. And besides, it’s much more fun to use your tent canvas for target practice!

Days out with Dennis Go by Bus? Why Not??

I thought that I had covered all the ways of getting to Sheffield in previous articles but here is one I previously missed. This time we are going via Mansfield; I will deal with ticketing later.

Trent Barton’s The Sixes 6.2 at 9:33 from King Street in Belper will have you in Ripley by about 10:00. Trent Barton’s The Nines bus from Ripley Market Place at 10:20 will get you into Mansfield by 11:30.

There is only one critical bus on the day and that is the 11:50 from Mansfield Bus Station, Bay P. This is Stagecoach’s service 53 to Sheffield. Mansfield Bus Station is only three years old and is one of the better ones, albeit a bit draughty.

This travels via Bolsover and past the gates of Renishaw Hall where the well-known Sitwell family resides. At this point, it is a very rural route with excellent views off to the left. Entering Sheffield, the bus shares the roadway for a while with part of Sheffield’s tramway system.

Sheffield Transport Interchange is reached by 13:25. The bus to Chesterfield (Stagecoach X17) leaves from Sheffield Transport Interchange, stand B4, at ten past and twenty to the hour, taking 45 minutes or so to get there.

Leave this bus in Chesterfield Coach Station, walk up the hill and left to Stand B14 where Trent Barton’s The Comet will bring you back to Ripley at 20 past and 10 to the hour. Leave the bus at Ripley and walk across the road to where Trent Barton’s The Sixes once more will carry you back to Belper at 3 and 33 minutes past the hour.

Lifestyle Traditions remain strong in these rural heartlands where farmers toil on terraces carved into the slopes and old folks still weave baskets and palm leaf hats. Others have joined the burgeoning tourist trade and a few rustic inns pop up along the road, serving tiny Canarian potatoes eaten with mojo sauce, meatballs, cod, goat’s cheese or honey-based desserts.

Travel Tenerife off the Beaten Track In the north-west corner of Tenerife, the Teno Rural Park may not be as famous as Teide or Anaga but this six-million-yearold volcanic range casts a magic spell on anyone who discovers it.

Covering just over 8,000 hectares above the lovely village of Buenavista del Norte (meaning ‘nice view’), it climbs to over 1,300 metres at Cruz de Gala, much of it along a windswept ribbon of road with glorious mountain and ocean views.

In these green bucolic hills, every bend of the road reveals something new: a colourful Guanche hamlet clinging to a slope, a vineyard or two, a row of prickly pear, a fabulous viewpoint where deserted trails head into the mountains suspended between ocean and sky.

There you might catch a glimpse of the mighty Mount Teide rising in the distance, the highest point on the island, or come across a young man practising his shepherd’s leap, clutching a long heavy pole to bounce like a goat from rock to rock. In days gone by, it was the only way to keep up with your flock; today it’s a competitive sport which keeps the skill alive.

The higher you go, the more dramatic the scenery, with deep gorges and cliffs created by ancient lava flows which left in their wake a rich variety of ecosystems. There are all sorts of endemic plants, laurel forest, succulents such as the candle-like spurge which grows the size of a small tree, coastal thistles, palm, dragon trees and myriad grasses and wild flowers. Hawks, kestrels and falcons hover high above, great colonies of pigeons gather in the forest and, if you’re lucky, you might just spot a rare native lizard basking on the stones.

At around 700 metres, the road reaches the mountain village of Masca, the Machu Picchu of Tenerife, they say, and when you set eyes on the rocky amphitheatre towering all around and the razor sharp peak guarding the entrance to the gorge, it’s easy to understand. Draped in bougainvillea, clinging to a knoll sprinkled with palms and orange trees, it’s a pretty little place, home to barely 100 but attracting ramblers and visitors alike, with a shaded square and steep cobbled lanes leading down to the viewpoint over the gorge. The Atlantic beckons far below, deep blue in the sunshine, but the trail plunging down the ravine is a two to three hour challenge: jumping from rock to rock (and no room for a shepherd’s leap), tackling loose lava grit, boulders, streams, here a flimsy bridge, there a waterfall where you wish you could stop, but there is no turning back. Finally, hot and tired but smiling, hikers emerge on a small sandy beach, but exploring the rich ocean life is best left for another time. The beach is totally isolated and the only escape is back up the ravine or a boat ride to the majestic cliffs of Los Gigantes along the coast on the edge of the Park. Meanwhile, on the westernmost tip of this most popular Canary Island, the Teno lighthouse offers yet more spectacular views right off the beaten track.

As the cult’s leader, Freya, tries to keep the ‘Bad’ out, the punishments become increasingly cruel. Blue and Toby want to escape, but Foxlowe is all Green has ever known, and her desperation to win Freya’s approval has devastating consequences. This is an unsettling, haunting read that leaves many unanswered questions, but is impossible to put down.

Nevernight Jay Kristoff Set in a city built from the bones of a long-dead god, Nevernight follows the fortunes of sixteen-year-old Mia. Aided only by her ‘shadow cat’, Mia’s on a quest to become an assassin and wreak revenge on the people who betrayed her family. Think Kill Bill meets Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials, with an extra helping of darkness, sex, violence and poetry added in for good measure.

All the Pretty Horses Cormac McCarthy First published in 1992, All the Pretty Horses follows John as he travels from Texas and into Mexico.

En route he finds friendship and love, and discovers what it means to be an adult. The last in a long line of Texan ranchers, John manages to get work on a Mexican ranch, breaking in the wild horses. While there, he falls for the rancher’s daughter, Alejandra, but is unfairly imprisoned and barely survives. It’s no surprise this won several awards and was made into a film.

Treemendous Marking the start of the winter tree planting season, National Tree Week runs from the 26th November to the 4th of December and was started by the Tree Council in 1974. Events involving tree planting still take place all around the UK. When the colder months arrive and leaves fall to reveal stark branches, the changing nature of trees is an ever-present reminder of the seasons of life.

I have also read that the presence of trees in urban areas has contributed to a reduction in violence and crime. It seems that a greener outlook creates a peaceful atmosphere. It has also been shown that a view of trees and greenery can aid concentration and focus, perhaps by rooting us in the here and now.

As a gesture of gratitude for the gifts of the trees, my daughter and I decorated our backyard tree. Half dead, half alive we festooned the ‘Yin Yang tree’ with ribbons and garlands. The dog ably assisted with the watering. Our efforts indeed bore fruit and the branches now hang heavy with apples.

There’s no need to leave it until National Tree Week.

Take a leaf out of my book and climb a tree, hug a tree or even research your family tree!

Another way to be reminded of the circle of life is to watch The Lion King. I don’t recommend watching it too often though; it can be a particularly heart-wrenching experience!

Of course we all know that without the ‘lungs of the Earth’ cleaning the air and providing oxygen, our lives would be extinguished. Yet there are other interesting tree facts you might not be aware of: In Britain, we are lucky to have the largest population of ancient trees in Europe. The oldest single tree is the Fortingall Yew in Tayside which is over 3000 years old. The oldest trees in the world are said to be the Bristlecone Pines in America.

These are estimated to have lived for up to 4600 years!

An important quality of trees is their natural healing properties. You only have to hug one and you will feel instantly better. I think the hugging of trees must be quite ingrained in my family; my 2-year-old daughter has branched out into hugging lampposts.

Scientifically speaking, various studies have shown that patients in hospitals tend to recover more quickly and require fewer painkillers if they have a view of trees from their window.

Pauline Latham OBE MP I held a ‘Meet your MP’ session in Belper in July and was delighted with such a large turnout from local people. I took the opportunity to explain my role both in Parliament and in the Constituency and answered a variety of questions from the audience.

Early in the summer, I had a meeting at Babington Hospital with a group of Community Care providers and was interested to hear about the range of services, the support and dedication they offer to the people they visit. This is a crucial provision for those people who need their assistance, particularly as the voluntary sector becomes smaller.

Listening to the carers’ views, it is clearly evident that the social impact of the elderly and others who need their support, has a massive impact on health services and therefore this provision offers a huge benefit in relation to their long-term health. For example, by funding carers to assist with administering the correct medication in the homes of the elderly helps with their long-term health.

The carers also act as a key link between the community and the primary and secondary health care they need.

In the summer recess, I visited the Severn Trent Water plant in Little Eaton where I met with staff and was given a guided tour of the site. It is a site I drive past often and have always wondered what exactly it is that they do there. I was interested to see the filtration process that water has to go through from when it is taken from the River Derwent before it is suitable for drinking. I also chatted to staff about the changes the company has undergone over the last few years including learning more about how certain chemicals are no longer stored at the Little Eaton site and the different chemicals now in use.

In view of the large amount of rainfall in the early summer months, I was pleased to hear that there is at least one advantage to this – there is now sufficient water at source.

I really enjoyed my visit to the site and now when I have a glass of water, I appreciate it even more.

the year, Duffield Meadows School and Little Eaton School visited Parliament. They learnt about the history of Parliament and were also able to visit Downing Street for photos outside Number 10. Thank you to all the staff and students for representing MidThe 'Meet your MP' session in Belper Derbyshire so well and I look forward to welcoming the next group of visitors soon.

In the Constituency, I was pleased to visit two schools in Belper; St Elizabeth’s Catholic Primary School and Pottery Primary School. I spoke to pupils about the role of an MP and answered a wide range of issues including my opinion on the EU Referendum, whether I had met the Royal Family and my thoughts on Theresa May becoming Prime Minister!

Finally, I was invited to an update meeting regarding Belper’s Neighbourhood Plan, a document which will influence the shape of things to come in Belper in the future. A number of local residents are working on this Plan and it will enable people living in the area to join together to comment on how the town should develop over the next 10 to 15 years. It will cover issues such as new housing developments, leisure and transport facilities, opportunities for retail and employment and more generally how they want the Belper area to feel as a place to live. The steering group will be holding meetings and seeking the views of local residents, business people and landowners during a consultation period which will culminate in a local referendum to be held probably in May 2017. Belper Street Angels Listening Ears, Helping Hands, Looking Out …

Belper Street Angels are a group of local volunteers who for the last 4 years have been available on Belper’s Estates and in the Town Centre on a Friday evening offering support wherever they can.

They provide bottled water for those who have had too much to drink, pink flip-flops for those who have lost their shoes, and simple first aid. The Street Angels have got phone numbers for taxi firms, and for agencies that offer help with particular needs such as substance abuse. If there’s broken glass on the pavements they’ll sweep it all up, and also deal with any glass bottles or unfinished drinks that people have left lying around. They’ve helped people look for lost keys and phones.

There are currently 15 Street Angels, ranging in age from 20s to 70s and they each commit to do one shift a month either an early one or a late one. To help them with their planning they ask people to sign up for a year at a time, and then renew their commitment if they want to. The group’s roots are in local churches, but there is no requirement for Street Angels to belong to any faith group.

In addition to the above, a lot of the time they’re just there, chatting to people and seeking to be a friendly and reassuring presence on the streets of Belper. The group feel really appreciated and time and again people say how much they value what they do.

Bennett Construction, County & McAndrews Roofing and Roy Milner Painting and Decorating carried out the sympathetic restoration with professional efficiency leaving The Hunters Arms with a fresh, welcoming new façade.

Not content with bringing one pub back to life, Paula and Mark are working their magic on another local pub, The Wheel Inn in Holbrook, which they bought just over a year ago. Popular for real ales and ciders, The Wheel’s picturesque setting and beautiful rear garden makes it the ideal destination for walkers as well as couples and groups seeking quality drinks to please everyone’s palate.

Buy a Brick to Build a New Tearoom Members of the public are being invited to ‘buy a brick’ to help build new tearooms in Belper River Gardens.

The proposal to replace the existing derelict building by a much needed facility is being taken forward by a new community interest company, Belper Community CIC Ltd, whose aim is to tackle problems which affect the whole community. Belper Community CIC Ltd is owned and controlled by local people who want to give their time and energy to benefit the town. They have promises of funding and are applying for grants to cover the capital costs but, in the short term, there is a need for some cash to get the project going. Small donations from members of the public will help increase the probability of obtaining larger grants, by demonstrating public support for the new building.

For a donation of £25 the donor will receive a ‘virtual brick’ on the website and eventually, when the tearoom is built, a permanent record on a ‘supporter wall’. Donors also receive a certificate and an invitation to the opening event.

This project will provide what many in Belper have wanted for a very long time. A new cafe will augment the popular Edwardian River Gardens with their boats and play area. It will be a focus for events and visitors to the Derwent Valley

Mills World Heritage Site and become a top notch venue for special occasions.

After a decade of false starts, a clear path to provide a new building now exists. The new design (pictured) has gained popular support and proposals have been developed with the support of local councils who are prepared to contribute significantly to the costs. A planning application will be made shortly, with a view to getting the building up and running and in operation in 2018.

Les Dorey, one of the company directors said, “We need people in Belper to support this scheme in order to make it happen. Buying a brick is a neat way of doing this and will provide a permanent record of their generosity and involvement for future generations enjoying the new tearooms.”

Beer Beers of the Month: October October and it’s Trafalgar Day again. Woodforde’s Brewery in Nelson’s home county of Norfolk commemorates the occasion with its 4.5% abv best bitter, Nelson’s Revenge.

Odd cove, Nelson, and like many of our best-loved military heroes something of a maverick. Sixth child (of 11!) of a moderately well-connected Norfolk vicar, Horatio was born in Burnham Thorpe in 1758 and joined the navy at the age of 13½. As a young officer he was distinguished by extraordinary energy and reckless courage which was matched by his intellectual restlessness – he was a promising watercolourist as well as a student of military tactics.

Nelson’s Revenge has one of the most complex and absorbing noses of any beer I know. It comes on all rich and biscuity, as if someone was making butter-candy in the next room; then suddenly you get a darker note of vine fruit, then a brown-sugary hint of pineapple, and finally a citric sharpness. Glorious!

The palate is one-dimensional by comparison – light, fairly acid, with a hint of green fruit – while the finish, though long and dry, is more sour than bitter.

Sierra Nevada Torpedo Extra IPA has absolutely nothing in common with Nelson except the naval connotation in the name.

This beer is as contradictory in nature as the Hero of Trafalgar: its nose is estery -sharp like a Belgian blonde beer, yet at the same time oily, sweetish, and resinous.

The flavour is both sharp yet sweet – or rather bittersweet, like a crème brûlée that was perhaps rather too brûlée. The finish is short and sharp but, all in all, a beer the Admiral himself might have admired.

Beers of the month: November Lovely month, November. Not quite winter yet, and still a fair bit of autumn colour in the woods and lanes; but the Earth is most definitely half-asleep by now and even on those brilliantly clear late fall days, there’s a distinct nip in the air. Still, you want to spend as much time outdoors as you can taking it all in, maybe doing a bit of foraging (great month for mushrooms, November), before the cold weather sets in in earnest. And when you get home, you want to be met by a cheery log fire and a beer to match. So our choices this month are both dark but not too rich, and strong but not rabbit-punch strong.

First up is that perennial favourite, Theakston’s Old Peculier (it really is spelled like that) from North Yorkshire. It used to be marketed as being so strong that soft southerners were only allowed to buy it in halves, but that was in the days when some keg beers were so weak they could legally be sold to children. It’s actually 5.6% alcohol by volume, which is respectable but not exactly muscle-bound.

Actually, nothing in Old Peculier is all that extreme.

The nose has a touch of seasonal caramel, but the dominant note is sharp pineapple chunks. The body is surprisingly light and the palate is really quite sweet, with some cinnamon spice but not much hop bitterness.

The finish isn’t especially bitter, either. Not quite as weighty as its reputation would have you believe, but a fine complement to the season.

Innis & Gunn’s Oak-Aged Rum Finish is another dark beer that isn’t as heavy as appearances suggest. It’s a meaty 6.8% abv, which accounts for the little bottle it comes in; and when you see that sort of strength and the word “rum” on the same label, you’re bound to start thinking of molasses. The nose lives up to expectations: there’s a certain amount of pineapple chunk, and some herby hop in the background; but it’s the smell of dark rum that thumps you in the hooter.

It all calms down on the palate, though: the rum is balanced by a woody sharpness and a slight peaty character, and the finish is short and sweet.

Nicely balanced, and one to sip.

Recipe

Sweet Potato and Chickpea Curry A quick and easy vegetarian dish full of Indian flavour. If you don’t have all the spices just use 1-2 tbsp medium curry paste. Serve with boiled basmati rice or warmed naan breads, if liked.

Serves: 4 Ready in: 45 minutes Ingredients: 2 tbsp vegetable oil 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 3cm piece fresh root ginger, peeled and grated 1 large onion, peeled and chopped 1 aubergine, cubed 2 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground turmeric 2 tsp ground coriander ½ tsp hot chilli powder 3 medium-sized sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed 500g carton passata (sieved tomatoes) 400g can chickpeas, drained and rinsed 1 tsp garam masala Salt and freshly ground black pepper Freshly chopped coriander, to garnish Method:

potato is tender and the sauce has thickened.

Stir in the chickpeas and garam masala and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Simmer for a further few minutes. Serve in warmed bowls garnished with chopped coriander.

For a chunkier sauce use a 400g can of chopped tomatoes and add 250ml water.

Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan and fry the garlic, ginger and onion over a medium heat for about 5 minutes until light golden.

Stir in the aubergine and fry for a further 2 minutes.

Add all the spices to the pan and cook, stirring, for 1 minute until fragrant. Stir in the sweet potatoes, the passata and 150ml water and bring to the boil.

Footnotes: Corns Are No Joke It’s quite strange how people joke about how painful corns can be because anyone who suffers from them knows they are no laughing matter.

Corns come in two varieties, Helloma Durum, the hard corn, and Helloma Molle, the soft corn. Soft corns develop between the toes and hard corns anywhere on the foot. They are always caused by the same thing – pressure.

When the foot encounters too much pressure, from footwear being too tight or standing on hard surfaces for too long, it produces hard skin to protect itself. However, if the cause of the pressure remains, the constant production of hard skin actually increases the pressure which ultimately results in a corn due to death of the skin at the living layer. The usual treatment of corns is to remove the centre (enucleation) and, in some instances, padding and/or treatment with a chemical such as silver nitrate. Unless the cause is removed however, they will come back.

With soft corns between the toes and hard corns usually on the outside of the little toe, it can be as simple as buying wider or bigger shoes. It’s a little known fact that your shoe size can increase by a half to a full size in your late thirties or forties. Hard corns, particularly on the ball of the foot, can be more difficult if you spend a lot of time on your feet. They usually require regular routine treatment to prevent them becoming painful again. If you do suffer from painful corns, you have my sympathy as I have suffered with them myself – which is why I don’t joke about them.

Derbyshire Walking: Alfreton to South Wingfield Walk Type: Circular route through undulating countryside; 90% footpaths, 10% country roads Distance: 4 miles (6.5 km) Time: Allow 2.5 – 3 hours Waymarking: Routeway 3 OS Map: Explorer 269 (1:25,000) Chesterfield and Alfreton Start: Saint Martin’s Church, Alfreton (park sensibly within the town) The Route 1. Enter the churchyard and go straight ahead, passing the main entrance to the church. Follow the flagstone path through the churchyard with the church on your right. St Martin’s Church is reputed to be the oldest building in Alfreton. The lower arch was built in the 12th century, and is the oldest part.

The rest of the tower was completed 200 years later.

Leave the churchyard and travel sharply left. Cross the stile to the right of the gate and proceed along the track for approximately half a mile.

2. As the track bends to the right, go over the stile and cross the field. Continue along with the hedge now on the right. Pass over a second stile and turn left to the stile by the road. Cross the road; beware of traffic.

The River Amber

The River Amber Oakerthorpe Nature Reserve is formed from the remains of the Oakerthorpe coal mine, which helped to create a marshy area alongside Oakerthorpe Brook. This is now a nature reserve managed by Derbyshire Wildlife Trust.

5. Go across the gravel path and head straight on to reach the boardwalk. Follow the boardwalk and then the path to reach a gate. Follow the path across the drive, passing the house then follow the path to reach a road. Cross the road (beware of traffic) to a footpath on your left by a phone and post box.

6. The Anchor Public House is to your right.

Go through the gap and cross the lawn to reach Hollybank House car park. Cross to the right hand corner of the car park. Follow the path with the hedge/fence on your left, to go up David’s Hill.

Follow the footpath around the field and into the woodland. Follow the path out of the wood and continue up the field, following the hedgerow on your left passing the large radio mast.

7. Enter the woodland and follow the footpath on your right along the top of the wood. At the steps,

4. Go straight ahead with the wood on your right.

On reaching the fairway, cross with the bunker on your left. (Look for a footpath sign, low down, near the bottom of an oak tree.) Beware of flying golf balls! Cross the second fairway to the left of the tee and large oak. Head down the lane, with the wood on your left, then turn left into Derbyshire Wildlife Trust’s Oakerthorpe Nature Reserve.

9. Turn right and follow the road until you reach the church. Turn left into the churchyard, pass to the right of the church and cross a stile to leave the churchyard and enter a field.

Wingfield Manor was built in the sixteenth century by Ralph de Cromwell, Lord Treasurer to Henry VI. Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here in 1569 and again in 1584. Whilst there she plotted with Anthony Babington, a local squire, to escape with the intention of overthrowing Queen Elizabeth I. The conspiracy was foiled and Babington was executed in 1586. The manor is administered by English Heritage and is open to pre-booked groups only. The manor is privately owned so access is unavailable outside of these arrangements.

All Saints Parish church dates back to the 13th century.

What is believed to be the tomb of the ancient Norman family of DeHeriz can be found in the churchyard. This family were the lords of the Manor of Oakerthorpe. The tomb cover, found beneath the east window, depicts a knight lying cross-legged.

8. Turn left under the railway via a tunnel, emerging onto a sports ground. Go through a kissing gate and follow the path through a field.

Travel alongside the River Amber and then cross the bridge over the Amber to reach Holm Lane, opposite Taylor’s Mill. Cross the road (beware of traffic) onto the pavement opposite.

South Wingfield (or ‘Winfield’ according to old records) is believed to have had two mills. Taylor’s Mill dates back to the 17th century, although there was a mill on this site long before. The other mill was believed to have been under the walls of Wingfield manor.

10. Continue along the path until you reach a stone squeeze stile. Turn right and head uphill to the bridge across the railway. Turn left after crossing the bridge and follow the path alongside the quarry, passing through two wicket gates. Go through a squeeze stile between two stone gateposts. Follow the wall on the left to reach Dale Road.

11. Turn right and follow the road uphill to reach the junction. Cross the road (beware of traffic) to the footpath opposite. Pass through six fields, heading towards a wood and the church. Upon reaching the small wood, turn right along the track, towards the gate.

12. Turn left through the gate to rejoin the route back to the church.

And Another Thing...

Where Tom does ‘Snapchat’ “Tom? Tom! Put down that silly magazine and listen.”

“It’s not a silly magazine. Look at that split-screen camper isn’t she lovely?”

“Amazing. Listen, it’s about Hannah.”

My ears pricked up at the mention of our teenage protégé.

“What about Hannah?”

“Well, you know that boy she likes at school?

The good-looking one that’s taller than you?”

“No. But do continue.”

“Well - and don’t breathe a word - they’re talking.”

“What about?”

“Does it matter? The main thing is that they’re talking. Isn’t it exciting!”

“Thrilling. Are they talking now? Do you want me to go and listen?”

“No! Don’t be nosey. Just be happy that she’s talking to a nice boy. Here she comes. And no smart remarks thank you.”

And with that Hannah, mobile device positioned firmly in front of her face, plopped down on the sofa opposite.

A pause, then. “So, your mother informs me that you’re talking to a boy.”

“Mmnn.”

“Are you talking now? Well it’s not much of a conversation.”

Hannah rolled her eyes as she held up her phone.

“Er, Snapchat, hello?”

“And how do you do Snapchat?”

“You just ‘do’ Snapchat, OK?” Sarah tried to explain. “Tom, it’s a messaging app. It’s like texting but more...teenagey.”

“Well I was texting Nigel last night asking could I borrow his nail gun and I don’t remember anyone getting giddy about that.”

“Er, I am actually here in the room you know? For goodness sake!” (Or words to that effect). With parental embarrassment now at its absolute zenith, Hannah, her eyes rolling like a zombie, flounced out in disgust.

My Dearly Beloved and I returned to watching Wanted Down Under. “That wife is bullying him into going, why doesn’t he just tell her? I say dear, she’s...what’s the matter?”

“Tom, after the way you spoke to Hannah about that boy, well I wouldn’t be surprised if they ended up not speaking at all.

Anyway I’m not staying here, I’m off out.”

“Where to?”

“None of your business. And do you know why? Because… we’re not speaking!”

Fortunately, in short order Hannah and her new squeeze did in fact begin “speaking” and very soon after (proving the ancient maxim that ‘faint heart ne’er won fair lady’) Hannah was asked out on a date to the cinema. And who was the chauffeur for this romantic interlude? You know it brother. So, after just three hours of hysteria about which outfit to wear (during which time I went about my chores with Benny Goodman playing blissfully on my fruit-based MP3 player) we were ready.

Then, just as I pulled up outside an annoyingly large detached house, Hannah self combusted with embarrassment. Why? Because I (not unreasonably in my view) dared to beep my horn.

“Dad!! For goodness sake!” (Or words to that effect).

Eventually, Adam appeared. Gangly, spotty and smelling of a mixture of nerves and Hugo Boss, he flopped into the back seat.

“ThnkufrtkngustocinewrldmrHughes.”

“Don’t mention it...I think.”

The whole journey was conducted in complete, stony silence.

Eventually we reached the Multiplex. Wordlessly, the happy couple exited via a rear door. I shouted after them, “Oi, I thought you two were speaking?”

“Tom, talking, in this context means that they are, well you know, talking.”

Cue eye rolls all round!

And so Adam and Hannah became a couple and all was well.

That is, until three weeks ago when Sarah rushed in carrying an emergency tub of Ben and Jerry’s. I dropped everything and plumped up the cushions.

“I think I’ve just about grasped that concept, thank you.

And so what comes next?”

“Tom? Can Hannah sit next to you for a bit, she needs her Dad.”

Sarah leant over and eyes widening said, “Well after talking, if it goes well, then it’s... speaking!”

And so, as a tear-stained daughter snuggled up to next me and began scooping ice cream determinedly into her mouth, we settled down to watch Annie Hall. In complete silence.

My mouth dropped open in astonishment - who’d have thought? I was about to throw in my twopenn’orth when up piped Hannah.

Motoring Renault Clio dCi 110 Dynamique S Nav Previously seen as the teenager that refused to grow up, the Renault Clio celebrates its 25th birthday this year – and with a host of new styling and design cues, could this be the most mature Clio yet?

What is it?

Originally launched in 2012, this is Renault’s facelifted fourth-generation Clio. Mechanical upgrade comes with the new 1.5-litre dCi 110 diesel powertrain, previously seen in Nissan’s Qashqai, and the option of a manual transmission coupled with the pre-existing TCe 120 petrol engine.

Renault has poured a lot of resources into styling – the exterior includes a new grille, re-profiled bumpers and an LED light signature, while C-shaped daytime running lights can be specified on certain models.

Cabin quality has improved significantly, with new upholstery, matt chrome trim and soft-touch materials – no more scratchy plastics to be found here.

With 30 different colour combinations, five roof decals, and four exterior customisation packs, the model has been dubbed ‘the most stylish Clio yet’.

What’s under the bonnet?

The pokey dCi 110 diesel powerplant is linked to a six-speed manual gearbox, providing 108 bhp. 0-60mph takes 11.19 seconds, and top speed is 121mph.

The diesel engine can be noisy when the car is at idle or moving slowly, but fades to an indistinct hum at 3,000 revs. The dCi 110 returns an impressive 80.7mpg, while emitting just 90g/km CO2.

What’s the spec like?

Spec on the £17,755 dCi 110 Dynamique S Nav is

extensive, with an updated sound and infotainment system with Bose speakers and the new R-link connectivity system featuring as standard.

However, the new diesel engine is only available in this top-level trim, meaning that drivers looking to spend less are left with the option of one of the pre-existing powertrains.

The basic spec Clio starts from £10,495, meaning the range includes both affordable and high-end (for the B-segment) options.

Any rivals?

There are a host of affordable rival superminis including the DS3, Citroen C4 Cactus and Ford’s Fiesta. Drivers wanting a more premium experience can opt for the Audi A1, which the Renault is no match for.

What’s it like to drive?

This longer and wider Clio, with its sportier appearance and increased cabin space, delivers better handling. The car’s agility and body control is improved, but not enough to make the drive markedly different to its predecessor.

The 108bhp engine is powerful enough and the car accelerates with ease in any gear.

The stop/start feature, standard on some models, works well and doesn’t cut out at unfortunate moments – as it does in some of the Clio’s B-segment competitors.

A driver-activated Ecomode, which is standard on the Dynamique Nav model and above, reportedly improves fuel economy by up to 12%.

Verdict Renault claims the Clio is more versatile and mature than its predecessor, but with the new diesel powertrain only available in the top-spec model, we feel the carmaker is shoehorning itself into the more upmarket end of the B-segment. The facelift does well to refresh the product and keep it relevant. But with 13 million units sold worldwide since it was launched in 1991, and 12,589 sold in the UK alone between January and June this year, we very much doubt the Clio will be going out of fashion any time soon.

“You’re trespassing,” Marion said with annoyance. “That tree borders my property. All the fruit belongs to me.”

“You can’t own a tree;” the girl said, “it’s a living thing.”

“But I’ve got nothing to catch them in,” Marion said, annoyed.

She didn’t much like games.

“What utter nonsense,” Marion said crossly. “Of course you can.”

“Then nip into your house for a bowl.” The girl smiled sweetly. “As big as you like.”

The girl looked dubious.

“I don’t trust you,” Marion said, “the minute I’m gone you’ll be off with the lot.”

“Last year all the plums just fell into the lane and got ruined,” the girl said. “That’s a waste, and we’re taught not to waste food.”

Marion felt a twinge of guilt. Last year she had intended to pick the damsons, but it meant getting the step ladder out of the garage and she’d never got round to it.

The girl looked offended.

“Brownie’s honour I would not,” she said. “Alright then, why not catch them in your scarf?”

“They taste like plums,” the girl replied tartly.

“It’s not a scarf, it’s a pashmina,” Marion said, then realised what a good idea that was. The girl clearly wasn’t aware just how big her pashmina was. If she held it taut she could catch every damson, and the annoying child would end up with none at all.

“So you’ve been eating them as well?” Marion asked.

“Alright then,” Marion agreed, “you’ve got yourself a deal.”

“Just the one,” the girl grinned. “It was juicy.”

She unfolded the length of fabric.

“Why don’t you climb down with your bucket?” Marion said cunningly, “And I will take my share from what you’ve picked.

The rest you can keep as a picker’s fee.”

“Not fair!” the girl cried. “It’s massive.”

“They’re not plums,” she said firmly, “they’re damsons.”

The girl considered this for a moment.

“How about,” she replied, “I take my share from the bucket and you get what’s left instead?”

“You can’t back out now,” Marion said, pleased that the balance of power had been redressed.

“Alright,” the girl conceded reluctantly, “get ready then.”

“Certainly not,” said Marion. This child really had some cheek.

“Don’t forget those are my damsons and you are a thief.”

Marion squinted up into the branches of the tree with the pashmina outstretched like a fireman’s net. The girl wedged herself against a branch and held up the bucket. Slowly it began to tip. Marion braced herself.

“If you cared about them you’d have picked them already,” the girl said. “I’m the one who’s taken all the risks.”

First there was a strange rattling sound, then a slurry of wet damson stones rained down upon her.

“But you didn’t ask permission,” Marion said, outraged.

“You know how I said I’d only eaten one?” the girl laughed, swinging nimbly down with her empty bucket. “Well, I might have been lying.”

There was a steely look in the girl’s eye. Then she smiled.

“How about we play a game?” she said. “I tip this bucket and whatever you catch you keep, and whatever falls on the ground I keep.”

Gardening Tools of the Trade With the arrival of autumn, there is plenty of maintenance work needed in the garden. Using the right equipment will ensure that jobs are completed as easily and quickly as possible.

It really is worth buying as good a quality garden tool as you can afford. Poorly made and badly designed tools can work out a lot more expensive (and frustrating!) in the long run, so start with a few good ones and build up gradually.

A good quality fork and spade are essential and they need to be sturdily built. The neck and head of the spade should be moulded from one piece of metal for added strength. The shaft is usually constructed from wood or metal and you should make sure that it is firmly attached at both the head end and the handle. Ensure the metal parts have been treated to prevent rust.

A hand fork and trowel are essential for smaller jobs such as weeding or gardening in confined spaces, and they are also great for moving and dividing smaller plants, for planting bulbs and for mixing up small amounts of compost. It is definitely worth feeling the handle to ensure that that the grip is comfortable.

Next decision: stainless steel or coated steel?

Stainless steel does not rust and many people find they move through the soil better, but they are pricey. Coated steel tools are much cheaper and provided you keep them clean and oil them periodically and at the end of each season, they last well.

You will need a hoe for weeding between small plants and for aerating the surface of the soil.

Sharpen your hoe regularly and it will last for ages and slide rapidly and easily through the soil. Most hoes have a 1.5 metre (5 foot) shaft but if you are very tall, then longer ones are available from some manufacturers. My favourite is the SpeedHoe, UK designed and with an unusual almost heart-shaped

head with a blade running around all edges and a pronged rear, making it the easiest and most effective hoe I’ve ever used.

A spring-tined rake is really useful because it has thin flexible wire tines which make it perfect for raking up lightweight debris and fallen leaves or, of course, lawnmower clippings.

Although a garden rake can also be used to rake up leaves, its main purpose is to break up lumps of soil and help you to create a fine level area for sowing seed, whilst at the same time removing stones, lumps and other debris.

If you plan to grow vegetables, then a small hoe known as an onion hoe is an invaluable tool and allows you to weed between fairly closely spaced crops. For really tight spaces and weeding between paving, I’m addicted to my Speed Weeder, a small red-handled tool which is the best I have used for hoiking out dandelion roots in one piece too!

Finally, if the tools carry a guarantee then make sure that you keep the receipt and any relevant label from the tool itself or else it may well be difficult to prove precisely when and where you bought it.

Holly’s Column Autumn Events Because of the school calendar, September always feels like the start of a new year for me. Except, instead of promising resolutions and lively celebrations, there are resentful school children with oversized uniforms and haircuts worn to last – not to mention countless trips to WHSmith.

Although as with everything new there is an air of excitement (even if we won’t admit it). We (secretly) look forward to the clean crisp air of autumn and watch the green leaves turn a brilliant array of brown, burgundy and orange.

There are key events in Belper that help us adapt to this transition with a more open mind, such as the Belper Fair.

However, what can be a lighthearted, back garden display for some can be a frightening and traumatic experience for pets and pet owners. The message I’m hearing is that pet owners accept that bonfire night comes with fireworks but displays starting several weeks before and ending several weeks after gives them little chance to soothe their pets, with some even having to be sedated.

So maybe swap the sonic boom for a sparkler this November?

Then, not long after the Christmas lights have been switched on, everyone is playing ‘spot the first Easter egg’.

The fair invites a great community atmosphere which my mum first introduced me to when I was 18 months old. Since then I’ve been going with my friends annually, slowly building up to the bigger rides. As well as rides, there are the traditional hook-a-duck stalls and food stands offering anything from candy floss to burgers.

Not forgetting the opportunity to win a teddy bear twice your size!

Hot on the heels of the fair is Halloween.

Though some people may regard this American import with disdain, the Belper community has turned it into something very positive. As I have mentioned in a previous article, several households dress up their homes to raise awareness and money for charity. Many families join in the fun and sport ghoulish costumes – from grandparents to newborns.

No sooner than we have packed away our witch’s brooms and grim reaper’s scythes, the Christmas decorations that have been creeping out since mid-June arrive in full force.

This is despite the fact that November 5th is next in line. There are several well-run bonfires and firework displays in and around Belper.

The Diary of a Local Mum Lies, Lies, Lies...

so uncharacteristically shy. Years later, she admitted she’d been terrified because I’d told her that grandma, a very wise mother of 6 and grandmother/great grandmother to many, never missed anything “She’s got eyes in the back of her head.” Poor child.

We always encourage our children to tell the truth. “It’s important to always be honest” we say. “People need to be able to trust you” we tell them. “You must always, always tell the truth” we reiterate. And then we tell them lies.

You’ll get square eyes if you watch too much TV There are variants on this. Sometimes it’s if you watch too much TV, sometimes it’s if you sit too close, but in essence they’re the same lie. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m sure there’s absolutely no scientific evidence to prove this ‘fact’. I, for one, have never, ever seen anyone with square eyes. But it’s one of those lies that is now so ingrained in our psyche that I bet even as an adult you still daren’t sit right in front of the TV, just in case.

A big, fat, pack of parenting lies that you were probably fed as a child and swore you’d never tell your own children...but they spring from your mouth unbidden, like some kind of dark parenting spell passed down through generations.

The batteries have run out/they don’t sell those ones anymore A bit of a cheeky one and, I have to admit, it’s sometimes necessary just to save your sanity.

Some toys just make the most irritating noises!

Now, you may have read that paragraph and thought “No, I don’t lie to my children. We have a good, honest relationship built on mutual trust and respect.”

Ok, read the following and then tell me you’ve never lied (no crossing of fingers either):

If you pick your nose you might pull your brains out Ewww! Yes, picking your nose is a disgusting habit but, really?! Telling kids things like that will scar them for life – or make them dig a little deeper, just to see if they can...

If the wind changes you’ll stay like that Some ‘genius’ came up with this eons ago and somehow it has now become a stock phrase for all parents who’re trying to encourage their child to stop sticking their tongue out/gurning/contorting their features into something more reminiscent of a creature from Harry Potter than a smiling toddler.

After spending my childhood trying to maintain a neutral expression just in case, I always swore I’d never use this one but I think it may have escaped my lips on occasion. Shame on me.

The ice-cream van only plays a tune when it’s run out of ice cream It’s mean, tight-fisted, probably a bit lazy, and it could seriously impact some people’s livelihoods if a rumour like this got hold – but I bet we’ve all said it once or twice.

Mums have eyes in the back of their head When my daughter met my grandma (her great grandma) for the first time as a small toddler she barely uttered a word and spent the whole time looking at the floor. I couldn’t understand why she was

Eating crusts makes your hair curly Seriously? I mean, is there even a point to this one? Is it supposed to encourage children to eat their crusts or leave them? Do you want curly hair or not? I’ve no idea. Aside from the fact that it’s utter rubbish, if you’re going to lie at least do it for a reason.

So, there you have it. Some of the lies of parenthood exposed (and this is by no means an exhaustive list). If your children are of reading age then I’ve just outed you and I’m sorry, but the guilt was just too much.

I hate myself for ever having played a part in spreading these crazy, age-old mistruths. I’m sure my nose has grown...

The Creation Station An innovative and award winning programme for pre-school children has been launched in Belper and Duffield.

The Creation Station’s hands-on art and craft exploration sessions give even very young children the chance to safely experiment with a wide range of materials, tools and ideas. Kay Fletcher is leading the weekly, term-time programme for youngsters and their parents/carers at The Strutts Centre in Belper and the Scout Hut in Duffield. Kay, a local mum of two, will be leaving her 14-year teaching career to begin her Creation Station journey.

To celebrate the launch, everyone buying a trial session will get a second session for free. Kay said: “I am really excited about bringing the Creation Station to Belper and Duffield. Our aim is to inspire children’s imaginations through our specially designed art and craft activities and products. As well as being terrific fun for both child and adult, the sessions encourage positive parenting skills through practical creative play. Creating their own piece of art each week also helps develop a child’s thinking and creative skills. Another plus point for parents is that even

when we get messy using paints and clay they don’t have the worry and stress of cleaning up like they would at home.”

Classes will be held on the following days: Tuesdays 9:45 – 10: 35 (Little Explorers - 15 months to 5 years) and 11:00 – 11:45 (Baby Discover - 6 months to 14 months) at Duffield Scout Hut; Wednesdays 10:00 – 10:45 (15 months to 5 years) and 11:15 – 12:00 (6 months to 14 months) at The Strutts Centre, Belper.

Local Gymnasts to Compete in Norway Many of us have been inspired by the incredible performance of Team GB at the Rio Olympics this summer.

Athletes in a range of sports have been clocking up the medals to make Rio Britain’s best ever away Olympics, and British gymnasts certainly played their part with some historic victories. Meanwhile, a little closer to home, a team of local gymnasts have also been enjoying success and, like their Team GB heroes, are planning to take their performance overseas too!

The Advanced Display Team from Little Eaton’s Trix Academy performed at the British Gymnastics ‘Gym for Life’ event at Liverpool’s Echo Arena in July, winning silver and scooping a prestigious award for ‘Innovation and Originality’. Groups from all over the country took part in the event so it really was a fantastic result for the relatively new club which moved from small premises in Belper to their dedicated Little Eaton facility in January last year.

However, there’s no time to relax for the Trix gymnasts and coaches – it’s onwards and upwards as they prepare for even more events...and their biggest challenge yet! In July 2017 the Advanced Display Team’s eleven gymnasts, aged between 10 and 15, will be taking part in the FIG

World Gym for Life Challenge in Norway where they will represent not only their club but their country, competing against teams from all over the world in the 4-day event.

Upbeat With the arrival of the darker nights of autumn, we would like to remind readers to think about their home security and to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime.

Although our area continues to be a safe place to live, when it does happen, most burglaries are carried out by opportunist thieves who might use the darker evenings to look out for lapses in security – such as doors and windows left insecure or property left on display in cars.

By taking some simple steps you may reduce this opportunity, and we would urge residents to keep windows and doors locked and secure at all times, whether they are inside or outside the home. Please also pay attention to the security of sheds, garages and cars, and to any items you store inside.

Other advice and tips include:

• Making use of good outdoor lighting to put off a burglar.

• Making your home look occupied when you are out – avoid leaving curtains closed during the day and use automatic timer switches to turn lights on.

• Consider fitting a burglar alarm – make sure it is installed

properly by a reputable firm. Also remember to set it before you leave home.

• A thorny hedge along the boundary of your property may put thieves off, as may a gravel path, as it’s noisy to walk on.

• Always close any gates and secure with a lock.

• Trim back any hedges or plants that a burglar could hide behind.

We urge residents to be good neighbours and to contact the police if you see anyone acting suspiciously in your area. Call 101 for a non-emergency, and 999 in an emergency situation.

Also, consider becoming part of a local Neighbourhood Watch scheme. These are small groups of residents who look out for signs of crime in their community, sharing information with each other and the police. Members also receive advice on home security and coordinators can help other residents to tap into the support offered by other agencies.

Local History:

Belper Area Floods of 1965 This article for All Things Local was compiled during early summer following days of thunderstorms and heavy rain over the country, giving rise to flash floods in many areas.

This unseasonal weather brought to mind the serious floods which arose in the Belper area in December, 1965, and the Society’s archive has the following account of the disruption caused by the water.

‘Belper, Milford, Duffield and Ambergate were badly hit by the floods which followed melting snow and two days of heavy rain. By the Friday morning, several stretches of main road were under deep water and acres of farmland were inundated when the rivers Derwent, Ecclesbourne and Amber burst their banks. Transport along the A6 was blocked at Ambergate, along the Moscow straight at Milford and through Duffield to beyond the Baptist Church.

Many workers waited for buses that did not arrive and trains into Derby were considerably delayed due to flooding in the Matlock area. Drivers tried to reach their destinations by alternative routes only to find that these too were blocked. Traffic diverted to Blackbrook, through to Duffield, Allestree and then Derby, met with country lanes which were often choked with traffic.

The Derwent at Belper was dangerously high on the previous evening and the Coppice Brook also overflowed leaving much of Walker Bottom under water. Houses at Bullsmoor were isolated, and several near Pottery School were also affected. This was all caused by water pouring down from the Peak District after incessant rain. During Thursday night the Derwent was said to have reached its highest level for more than thirty years, and was 12ft 6ins higher than normal. The main weir just above Belper Bridge was completely submerged, and the tops of the bridge arches were not visible. Flood water entered four houses on Wyver Lane in Belper, and one resident remarked that he could not remember flood water in his living room for more than 62 years. The emergency services struggled to minimise the impact of the flood but were fighting a losing battle. One of the worst hit areas was Duffield where householders and shopkeepers were issued with sandbags in an attempt to keep the water out of their premises, but

despite these precautions the River Ecclesbourne flooded some properties. Tamworth Street was under two feet of water, and Ecclesbourne Avenue was also flooded. Near the Baptist Chapel on the main Derby Road, a stretch of stone wall was demolished, and the fields between the road and river turned into a lake with the railway embankment the only land visible.

The newly decorated Hurt Arms at Ambergate had all the downstairs rooms flooded, and cars in the car park were submerged, as were those at a nearby garage which lost some of its stock.

Reviewing the situation at its next meeting, Belper Rural District Council’s Estates Committee reported having received a telegram offering help from Belper’s M.P., George Brown, to which it had replied with thanks, informing him that “our heads are still above water”!’

The Society’s next talk is on Wednesday, November 2nd, 2016 at 7.30 pm at St. John’s Heritage Centre, and will be about “Working Women and Children in the Industrial Revolution”, given by Michael Parkin.

“Ecclesbourne Valley Railway: Into the Next Decade” will be given by Eric Boultbee on December 7th. All are welcome. Visitors are charged £3. St John’s Heritage Centre on the Butts is open on the last Saturday of the month except in December, from 9.30 am to 12.00 noon, and members are on hand to help with queries.
