Hello readers and welcome to the Christmas/ New Year edition As we approach the close of another year, I find myself in a reflective mood…

“Never set limits; go after your dreams. Don’t be afraid to push the boundaries. And laugh a lot - it’s good for you!” These wise words came from athlete Paula Radcliffe.

I can really identify with this quote; particularly the ‘laugh a lot’ part! Me and my husband Roy have been lucky enough to realise a lot of our dreams over the years; both at work and in our personal lives. If you don’t have dreams and vision it’s easy to fester in the comfortable and then get to a ripe old age and wonder ‘what if’? Roy and I are both self-employed and despite it being hard work, we wouldn’t have it any other way. Aside from work, we are blessed with a wonderful circle of friends and laughter is always high on the agenda.

So with Christmas nearly upon us and the New Year just around the corner take a bit of time to think about YOUR hopes and dreams. Put a little plan in place to see if you can achieve them, just one step at a time and who knows where you’ll end up.

Money Matters: Business Owners Who Rent Since starting the business in 2009 as a sole trader from a dining room on Nottingham Road in Belper, Belper Independent Financial Solutions has relocated to its third but hopefully permanent home. Since 1st November it can now be found 80 yards away from its previous home, at 10 Chapel Street, Belper.

Why was this? Typical of many businesses, the demand for independent financial advice created the need for the business to expand and grow.

Of course, expanding an operation is not unique to financial advice firms, and many businesses from builders to bakers do this if the demand and desire to grow exists. So, nothing new there.

Neither is the way that Belper IFS has expanded to bigger premises but perhaps the ‘how’ it was done may be something people will not know about.

A special type of plan called a Self-Invested Personal Pension is a vehicle that enables the holder to choose and manage the investments made.

SIPPs can purchase many types of asset including commercial, but not residential buildings. In this particular case, the Director of the company was able to allocate the cash assets within the SIPP to purchase the building. Similar to a standard personal pension, the assets within the SIPP are technically owned by the pension provider.

So what does this mean? As a consequence, the SIPP now effectively owns the building in Chapel Street, and Belper IFS becomes the tenant. Belper

IFS now pays tax deductable market-going rent to occupy the building, except that the rent is effectively funds belonging to the SIPP which, in turn, the Director can use (like assets of a standard personal pension) to provide retirement benefits when he retires. All highly tax efficient, like most regulated pension arrangements.

SIPPs are also able to borrow money too, so even if the assets of a pension fund do not appear sufficient to buy the right commercial property, it is possible that a lender may make advances to the SIPP sufficient to buy, subject to credit underwriting and their own lending criteria.

So, if you run your own business and are paying rent on premises you occupy, an option to use your pension to buy your premises may be worth considering. Of course there are many risks to pension investment and advice should be considered before pursuing. Commercial property purchase is not suitable for everyone as capital loss can occur at any time, as well as other potential risks such as liquidity and taxation. But as a business owner it may be worth your consideration.

The Better Life When Life Gives You a Lemon Tree...

The garden can be surprisingly forgiving, as we used to find out regularly when we kept chickens. What had become swamp, left to its own devices (i.e. fenced off), soon restored itself to health.

With that forgiveness sentiment in mind, I greeted the arrival of the lemon tree Anne had ordered with skilfully concealed disappointment. I took a sip from the last of this year’s elderflower Champagne, gazed down at the shrub and realised we’d be waiting a long time for our next batch of elderflower if we relied on home-grown lemons.

The other thing I soon realised is that lemon trees have quite specific needs. Aside from heat and light from the (world’s smallest) conservatory, there’s the soil balance to be considered, as well as the feed. By good fortune, the chap we asked at the garden centre had a passion for ‘citrus’ as I’ve learned to call it. I now know that there are two types of feed – for summer and winter. Also, that opinion is divided on the subject of soil-free or general-purpose compost. Most surprising of all, as we ambled to the car, me clutching my citrus leaflet as though it were a lifebelt, he caught up to us and whispered furtively, “Of course, some people swear by peeing around the tree – a good source of nitrogen.” He winked once, in Anne’s direction, and then vanished behind bamboo and boundary coverage.

I think I’ll pass on that suggestion. Some of our neighbours find us strange enough as it is. (And by us, of course, I mean me.) For example, now that word has got out that we’re growing oyster mushrooms from spore plugs that I tapped into logs a few months back, it’s clear that the bush telegraph has got some of its wires crossed. No, we’re not going into full-time commercial production and, no, it won’t take 10 years to get our first crop.

According to the instructions – which, as all gardeners know, never lie – we should see something edible soon and then potentially twice a year for the next five years.

I can’t wait till the neighbours find out we’re having a bash at growing chestnut mushrooms as well!

This year I have seen the benefits of planning out the gardening year properly. I generally follow the rules, but my earnest efforts to start off early Swiss chard Galaxy, bartered climbing beans and Oregon mange tout in mid-April, all met with disaster. Once I’d learned my

lesson and waited until the soil had warmed up sufficiently, the replanting – overseen by Anne and the cat – led to something of a bumper crop. We also enjoyed our first baby beetroot this year. And there was me thinking a Solo F1 was a birthday trip around Brands Hatch.

Speaking of planning ahead, we’ve added a rainwater diverter, aka an old piece of drainpipe, to the downpipe on the back roof, helping to fill the subterranean tank. I think the tiny flowerpot on the end is a nice touch and it’ll doubtless prove a nice talking point for neighbours and walkers in the village. That is, until they find out about the bags of manure being delivered.

Days out with Dennis Go by Bus? Why Not??

We are fortunate in our part of Derbyshire to have the Peak District on our doorstep so I make no apology for returning to it once more. We are off to Buxton via Chesterfield.

The first bus of the day is Trent Barton’s The Sixes (6.2) to Ripley from King Street, Belper at 09:33, arriving a little after 10am.

The next bus is Trent Barton’s Comet from Ripley Market Place to Chesterfield at 10:28 arriving at 11:10. Access to the town is across the road and up the escalator. You have the time in Chesterfield for a spot of lunch or a bit of shopping before catching G & J Holmes of Clay Cross Service 66 from stand B12 (two stands down from where you left the Comet) at 12:35. G& J Holmes buses are normally white in colour.

This superbly scenic route travels via Baslow, Eyam (the plague village), Tideswell and Millers Dale to arrive in Buxton Market Place at 13:50. As you are passing the church in Baslow, look out for the clock face that instead of having digits from 1 to 12 spells out VICTORIA 1897 to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee.

When you arrive in Buxton, access to the main shopping centre is down the hill into the town requiring a short walk. Should you not

wish to visit the town, the Market Place has toilets, shops, cafes etc.

You have 50 minutes to amuse yourself before returning to the Market Place stand E for High Peak Buses’ Transpeak service at 14:40 which will carry you back to Belper, arriving at 16:00.

Bus pass holders as usual travel free. Paying passengers are advised to buy a Derbyshire Wayfarer ticket from the first driver of the day which will cover everything except the Buxton – Belper sector which will require an extra fare to be paid because High Peak Buses DO NOT accept Derbyshire Wayfarer tickets on Transpeak services.

Travel The Victoria Falls In November 1855, a Scottish missionary sailing down the Zambezi was the first European to set eyes on the awesome falls, long known to the natives as ‘the smoke that thunders’.

“Scenes like this,” he mused, “must have been gazed upon by angels on their flight.” His name was David Livingstone and he called the falls ‘Victoria’ to honour his Queen.

Stretching 1.7 km across Zambia and Zimbabwe, reaching a height of 108 metres (twice that of Niagara) and pouring an average of 550 million litres of water a minute, the Victoria Falls defy imagination and, with all statistics combined, they are the largest in the world. Mist and spray are visible for 20 km around.

Surprisingly this mighty phenomenon does not occur on mountainous terrain but on flat land. It all started millions of years ago when earthquakes created faults in the old lava sheet and, as soft material filled up the cracks, the river forced its way through, carving out over time the eight zigzagging gorges we see today. But nature is not set in stone and the great Zambezi continues its work, protected by UNESCO and national parks on both sides of the border.

Most visitors view the falls from the Zambian side, where the Eastern Cataract brings the first heart-stopping moment as roaring waters plunge over the edge and the placid upper river continues to flow unaware towards the precipice. But just feet away, the great mass of water tumbles into the ‘boiling pot’, trapped in a massive swirl as it struggles to escape through the tightest of bends. A long flight of slippery steps leads down to the cauldron’s edge, a spine-chilling place where baboons bare their teeth and you might shudder at the sight of a crocodile swept over the edge.

Up on the top, those who dare bathe in the death-defying Devil’s Pool on Livingstone Island,

where the explorer measured the drop with a bullet attached to a piece of string. Meanwhile, along the Knife’s Edge Bridge suspended in mid-air, strange poncho-clad creatures crawl like aliens across the face of the fall, soaked to the skin but gazing, exhilarated, at the force of the water and the giant rainbow over the Victoria Bridge which spans the deep river chasm. Opened in 1905, the bridge was built in England, shipped to Mozambique and assembled at the site in 14 months. Trucks and trains cross it at a snail’s pace and it marks the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe claims over two-thirds of the falls with 16 breathtaking viewpoints along sign-posted trails which meander through pristine rainforest to reveal the entirety of the falls: Devil’s Cataract, Main Falls, Horseshoe, Rainbow (the highest), then looking right across the bridge into Zambia. There are fewer visitors on this side and, along with birds and butterflies, you might spot antelopes, bushbucks and other game. A statue of Livingstone looks down on it all, perhaps pleased that here, the water never dries.

It’s different in Zambia when around OctoberNovember time, the falls can dry up, breaking up the magnificent curtain of water into narrow streams and exposing the rock face, but on the other hand, Zambia claims the best viewing spots to enjoy the full moon. On a clear night, a magical lunar rainbow, or ‘moonbow’, appears over the water, ghostly and pale to the naked eye, but a good camera might capture the colours and one of the most enduring memories of the Victoria Falls.

Decisions, Decisions...

Over the course of a day, we make thousands of decisions. Most of these are made by our intuitive mind. This autopilot system is so efficient that we are often not even aware of making a choice.

Our logical mind, however, takes a lot longer. It takes more effort to mull over the complexities of an issue in a logical way to reach a reasoned conclusion.

I recently read an article about decision making that had some good advice. It outlined an important factor to consider whenever you need to make a decision:

comfort zone and encourage you to learn more about yourself. By veering off the familiar road you can learn new skills and find out what you might be capable of.

I took this sage advice on a recent dog walk. Taking the road less travelled, I found myself flailing about in a muddy field, rescuing my previously white dog from a swamp (well, it sounds more dramatic than a puddle) and getting completely lost for an hour.

This confirms that taking the road less travelled can make a difference.

So, try making up your mind and decide what changes to make as this year comes to an end.

After all... what’s the worst that can happen?

There is no such thing as a perfect decision!

Although an overtly simple statement, the fear of making a wrong decision can paralyse some people into non-action. Therefore, the knowledge that whatever happens may not be as perfect as Mary Poppins might help you feel a lot more relaxed about the decision-making process itself.

According to various research (and personal experience) resolutions rarely last. Generally, my resolves are dissolved by the end of January.

Research has revealed that 90% of people admit to “always” failing at least one of their resolutions.

So, despite the lack of evidence that resolutions are in any way worthwhile, I am at least going to make my mind up and resolve to be more motivated with my decision making!

Pauline Latham OBE MP The ‘Weeping Window’ Poppies are coming back to Derby!

The year of 2016 has certainly been a busy one and I just wanted to take this opportunity of highlighting several of the positive things that have happened locally.

If you have read some of my previous articles in this magazine, you will be aware that some time ago, I submitted a bid for the poppies from the Tower of London to come to Derby as part of their tour around the country. After months of preparing the bid, and hosting a visit by the 14-18 NOW Executive Committee, I am now absolutely delighted that Derby has been chosen as one of the few cities to host them at the Silk Mill Museum in Derby City Centre.

Many of you will be aware that Derby artist, Paul Cummins, designed the poppies at his Studio in Pride Park and was commissioned by the Tower of London to commemorate the centenary of the start of the First World War. His work consisted of 888,246 ceramic poppies to signify each British and colonial soldier’s life lost in the war.

When I visited his workshop in Pride Park way back in Visit by the Executive Committee January 2014, I saw the to the Silk Mill poppies being made. It was an amazing sight to see the thousands of poppies that had all been individually made by hand. Now, the people of Derby and surrounding areas can enjoy the ‘Weeping Window’ on its tour around Britain when it is displayed at the Silk Mill. Derby will host the poppies from JuneJuly 2017. Watch out for press releases and additional details being publicised with further information in due course.

I must also take this opportunity to mention Hollie Webb, who went to Ecclesbourne School in Duffield and was a member of Belper Hockey Club. Hollie scored the winning goal for Team GB in hockey in the recent Olympics in Rio; such a fantastic achievement both

locally and nationally. Team GB won a fantastic number of medals with only USA and China beating us in the Olympics and only China in the Paralympics. Hollie’s performance is such a major achievement and has certainly put Derbyshire on the sporting map! I am currently working on trying to get Hollie’s achievement recognised in Belper in some way. Unfortunately, it is not possible to have a postbox painted gold in the town but I am currently investigating the possibility of having a gold hockey stick on display in Belper. Of course, this will require some assistance with the fundraising and therefore if you feel that you can help, please get in touch via email on pauline.latham.mp@parliament.uk.

Finally, I have held a number of ‘Meet your MP’ sessions around my Mid-Derbyshire constituency over the last year. I have a further one scheduled to take place in Duffield on Friday 20th ‘Meet your MP’ Session January and another planned on Friday 3rd February in Little Eaton.

The purpose of the event is to give my Mid-Derbyshire constituents an opportunity to hear more about my role as your local MP which will be followed by a short question and answer session from the audience. Just a Thought...

Fit for Purpose For the first time in several years I ventured into a keep fit class. This is not my natural environment. There is a distinct lack of chocolate cake, soft furnishings and coffee.

There is far too much enthusiasm for sweat, exhaustion and bending into impossible shapes. However, after bringing two children into the world and having a rather extended break from all things health related, I knew it was time.

My heart was beating faster than the pulsating dance music blaring out of the speakers. I tried to quickly create an army of excuses as to why I couldn’t do it, shouldn’t do it or absolutely wouldn’t do it. Too late - a 5,6,7,8 GO! Suffice to say I made it through the ups, downs, ins, outs and roundabouts of the class. I caught

sight of my beetroot completion in the allencompassing mirrors and felt the Lycra leggings grip for dear life to my legs. I walked (well, staggered) away wondering what I had done to myself. Then after a moment, I laughed – it was actually good fun and I felt alright.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not about to start living on wheatgrass shots or parading goji berries around to anyone who’ll listen, but I think I’m going to keep up this little fitness class; a mini victory for myself.

I’m also keeping up the other little wins in my life, by going straight over the road for a latte and a slice of Victoria sponge after the class. Well it is all about balance after all!

Pepper and Turkey Stuffed Sweet Potatoes This is a tasty and healthy post-Christmas Day family supper and a great way to use up leftover roast turkey.

Serves: 4 Ready in: 1 hour 15 minutes Ingredients: 4 medium-sized sweet potatoes, scrubbed 2 tbsp olive oil 1 red onion, peeled and chopped 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 1 red pepper, deseeded and sliced 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and sliced 225g cooked turkey breast, diced 1 x 230g tub fresh tomato salsa Salt and freshly ground black pepper 100g Cheddar cheese, grated Chopped avocado, lime wedges and freshly chopped parsley, to serve Method: Preheat the oven to 200C, Fan 180C, Gas Mark 6. Prick the potatoes all over with a fork and place on a baking tray. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes or until tender.

Just before the potatoes are ready, heat half the oil in a frying pan and fry the onion for 6-7 minutes until tender, adding the garlic after 5 minutes. Add the peppers and turkey and fry for a further 2-3 minutes. Stir in 2 tbsp of the tomato salsa and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.

Halve the baked sweet potatoes and roughly mash up the flesh with a fork. Season lightly and drizzle over half the remaining oil, then pile the turkey and pepper mixture on top of the halves. Scatter over the cheese and drizzle over the rest of the oil. Return to the oven for 10-12 minutes until the cheese has melted.

Serve with chopped avocado and lime wedges, sprinkled with freshly chopped parsley. Spoon the rest of the salsa into a small bowl and serve on the side.

For a vegetarian version replace the turkey with halved chestnut mushrooms or diced aubergine or courgette and use vegetarian Cheddar cheese.

Beer Beers of the month: January Beers of the Month: December December is the month for hideous selfindulgence – your office party, your partner’s office party, your Christmas party, your neighbours’ various Christmas parties, relatives you haven’t seen for months (12 months, to be precise) dropping by, the Day itself, New Year’s Eve... you get the picture. So here are a couple of hideously self-indulgent beers whose calories will all have to be dissipated somehow in the grand January detox.

Let’s start with Guinness. Not the Guinness you’re used to, but one of its crop of new “craft” style bottled beers.

It’s easy to be cynical about the number of big, old-established brewers jumping on the craft bandwagon – but what matters is the quality of the beer itself. Is it any good?

In the case of this 6% alcohol West Indies Porter, based on a brewer’s book from 1801, yes, it is. It pours jet black, with a rumpled, loose, light tan head.

The nose is astonishing – a big burst of toffee and coffee (a more appealing mix than it sounds!) followed by a pineapple-chunk tang. The mouth feel is quite light, but the flavour packs more of that rich coffee balanced by sharp green fruit. The contrasting themes continue into a lingering finish. Well done, Guinness!

Stronger at 7.3% alcohol is McEwan’s Champion, a supercharged version of a Scotch ale. Traditional Scotch ales are dark amber in colour, sweetish, and not particularly hoppy and, apart from its muscular heft, Champion fits the bill perfectly. The colour is almost garnet; the nose blends fresh peaches with biscuity malt, with a faint whiff of esters in the background; the body is full and rounded and definitely on the sweet side; and the finish is a little sharper but against a backdrop of caramel. This will definitely be my Hogmanay beer!

So, that grand January detox we just spoke about...

Well, let’s forget it, shall we? I’ve just discovered that the average temperature in the UK is lower in January than in December – well, not that, exactly, because we all knew that, but by how much. The average daytime temperature in January ranges from 1.3-6.9°C compared to 1.9-7.2°C for December. So it’s much too cold to abandon those strong, warming, oxtail-soup beers in favour of something lighter and springier and zingier. So here are two absolute all-time classics for you: Fuller’s 1845 from Chiswick, West London, really looks, smells, feels, and tastes the part. At 6.3% alcohol, it rather defies conventional categorisation, with a rich ruby colour more like port than beer.

The aroma is of all things comforting: caramel and toffee at first, giving way to sharper notes of green fruit and citrus.

The mouth feel is rich and luscious with yet more toffee from the crystal malt Fuller’s favours; but there’s still more than a hint of citrus fruit – it tastes like it smells, in fact. Finally the finish is short and sweet, without any lingering hop bitterness.

Shepherd Neame 1698 from Faversham in Kent is marginally stronger at 6.5% but is a much less overwhelming beer than 1845. It’s slightly easier to buttonhole, for a start, being a descendant of the Burton pale ales that took the world by storm 200 years ago. It doesn’t have anything like the richness, either. Rather, it has a Christmas cake fruitiness with aromas and flavours of vine fruits, candied peel and marmalade on a surprisingly light, subtle body. The finish is very much hoppier than 1845. This is a beer that demands respect: it doesn’t drink its weight and could easily creep up on you!

Fuller’s and Shepherd Neame are two of the oldest breweries in Britain – in fact, with the possible exception of the Blue Anchor brew-pub in Helston, Cornwall, Shepherd Neame IS the oldest brewery in Britain – and the numbers in the titles of these beers, as you’ve probably guessed, refer to their dates of foundation. Next time we’ll look at something very much more recent!

Footnotes: A Season of Goodwill Hello up there, this is a message from your feet. We have served you faithfully throughout the year and, to be honest, you don’t seem to have given us much of a thought.

The festive season is almost upon us and we would like to make a few little requests. Firstly, please remember that when you go on your marathon shopping trips it would be nice to do it in comfortable shoes, not high heels. We would like to be in something warm as we don’t like chilblains and, believe us, you won’t like them either. It would also be nice if you could find time to put us up for a little rest now and again.

While we’re talking, please find it in your heart to give us a little treat for Christmas. A little soak would be nice as we don’t seem to get one very often now you’ve had that shower installed. A nice bit of cream would be lovely too as we do get a bit dry carrying you around all day.

Obviously, we’d like you to keep our nails trimmed, especially that thick one as it makes it difficult for us to work comfortably and we will have to complain if you don’t.

One last thing, if you don’t look after us and we do have to complain a little bit, please don’t say nasty things about us ‘killing you’ or being ‘more trouble than we’re worth’ and please don’t tell everyone how ugly we are; remember we have feelings too.

Derbyshire Walking: Whatstandwell to Alderwasley Walk Type: Hilly countryside with several steep climbs Distance: 4 miles (6.5 km) Time: Allow 2.5 – 3 hours Waymarking: Routeway 19 OS Map: Explorer OL24 (1:25,000) The Peak District, White Peak Start: Car park just beside Cromford Canal, on Main Road. Turn off A6 just before the Family Tree.

Whatstandwell Railway Station is only 5 minutes’ walk away (Grid Ref SK 332544) The Route: This walk takes you along the Cromford Canal, which lies within the internationally recognised Derwent Valley Heritage Corridor. The route climbs through woodland and traditional farmland, crossing briefly into the Derbyshire Dales.

1. Turn left to walk ¾ mile along the Cromford Canal towpath in a northerly direction, going under 2 bridges. When you reach Gregory Tunnel either go left and up and over the tunnel, or proceed directly through the tunnel itself.

Along the canal keep an eye open for Water Vole, the

(non-poisonous) Grass Snake and the noisy water bird the Little Grebe.

2. Whichever route was chosen, at the far side of the tunnel turn left to follow the public footpath through the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust’s Derwentside Nature Reserve. Take care on the very uneven path.

3. Turn right to cross the bridge over the River Derwent passing beside Homesford Waterworks.

Follow the path as it travels under the railway through a low archway. Continue to follow the road as it climbs up to the main road (A6); beware of traffic.

4. Do not cross the road at this point but turn right to travel along the pavement for 300 metres, passing Homesford Cottage and several houses.

Approximately 30 metres short of the ‘Conservation Crafts’ sign, cross the road (beware of traffic) and follow the footpath uphill (ignoring all branches off) to travel up through Birch Wood. The path continues uphill bearing right with walls on either side up to the B5035 road.

5. Turn right at the road, taking care to face the oncoming traffic. After 50 metres cross the road and climb the stile into Kings Lot Wood. Follow the path as it bears left up through the wood. After approximately 150 metres, turn right to travel up steps on a concessionary path. After about 75 metres the path passes right through the stone wall and continues through the wood on a path marked by posts with a red stripe.

6. The path skirts the woods with open fields immediately to your left and after about ½ mile links to a public footpath which is part of the Midshires Way. Turn left and follow the path along the edge of the woodland. There are excellent views of Crich Stand and the valley.

corner. Halfway up there is a footpath junction, level with the 4th pole under wires. Turn left here and head for the gate and stile, in a dry stone wall, just below the corner of the field. Pass the solitary stile, through a gap in the wall.

9. Continue to follow the path over two stiles as it travels beside the wood, along the valley – there are good views of Crich Stand and Holloway Village.

10. Go over the stile and through the wood. Once in the field keep the fence immediately on the left.

Then follow the path, which comes to a blue metal farm gate.

11. Go through the gate and continue straight ahead, keeping the wall/hedge on the right. Travel through the next four fields; Crich Stand will be directly ahead.

12. At the fourth field, follow the path as it runs to the right of a house, over two stiles. Go down the verge on the right-hand side of the drive. At the bend, cross the drive to continue downhill. Turn right, to follow the path running beside a stone wall.

Cross the road and two stiles to drop down to the A6 (beware of traffic). Take care crossing the road, as the pavements are narrow. Follow the road over the river, past the Family Tree and up Main Road to the start point.

7. Follow the path as it travels to the left of farm buildings through a gate and two stiles. Once at the farm entrance gate, go through the gateway and turn sharply right to follow the track. After approximately ¼ mile go through the wicket gate on the left, before the farmhouse, and cut through the field to cross the Mere Brook via the stepping stones.

8. Go through the gate and continue straight up the edge of the field, keeping the wood on the left. Just past the second pole, turn right along the track to an old gate post. Head uphill towards the top right

And Another Thing...

Tom makes a new friend Snuggled up on the sofa with her iPad, My Dearly Beloved sat giggling to herself.

I lowered my copy of What Camper Van to ask what was tickling her so.

“Oh it’s Steph, she’s just so funny.”

The mention of that woman’s name gave my heart cause to sink, for Stephanie was Sarah’s N.B.F. (New Best Friend) – a position to be treated with great caution. Cue eye rolling from yours truly. “Listen you big snob, just because you don’t go on Facebook, don’t sneer at those who do. It’s a great way to stay in touch with people. It’s not shallow at all.”

“And what snippet of whimsy is she imparting tonight?”

Sarah flipped her tablet round to show me a video of a cat on a skateboard. “Isn’t that hysterical?”

“I’ll throw all my Laurel and Hardy DVDs in the bin then, shall I?” “Up to you, anyway don’t make any plans for Friday, we’re going out for dinner with Steph and Dave.” The idea of Steph invading our lives I had resigned myself to. But now Sarah was adding a Dave. I knew nothing of this ‘Dave’ person. I gave a little involuntary shudder. “Tom, what is the matter with you?

He’s a nice guy. You and him could become friends.”

“I’ve already got friends thank you. We won’t get on, trust me.

What does he do?”

“I think he’s a Management Consultant.”

“I’m not going.”

Sat in the car park of the restaurant, Sarah had some strong words for me. “Listen Tom, I let you wear that old shirt as a compromise. Steph and Dave have been married for nineteen years and she says a good marriage is all about compromise.”

“I want to go home.”

Sarah pressed on. “Just relax, and whatever you do, don’t crack that ‘You’d be out by now’ joke.”

“But darling, that’s my default gag.”

“Let’s just go in.”

Greeted by a handsome young man pretending to be from Sicily, we were shown to our table, at which the dreaded love birds where already ensconced. Noting that Dave (tall, trendy haircut, polo neck) had a micro check of his watch as we approached, I was greeted with a dreaded ‘man hug’. “Tom! So glad you could make it! (obviously a dig) Tom, I’d like you to meet the gorgeous Steph.”

Highlights, fake tan, white teeth, gym figure. “Tom! I feel as if we already know each other, Sarah’s told me so much about you.”

“Yes, and I’ve seen the pictures on the internet.” Cue frozen grin from Steph and icy stare from Sarah. “...on Facebook, obviously.” Minor crisis averted, Sarah, noting that the lovebirds were holding hands, grabbed at my wrist, thereby disabling my left arm.

Appalling muzak filled the restaurant. Dave gasped and, eyes swimming cooed, “Steph listen, this is our song - Because You Loved Me by Celine Dion!” Cue muffled sobs and double hand holding. I yanked away my arm and reached for the wine list.

Steph, smiling but with eyes narrowed asked, “So, what’s your song Tom?” I slapped down the menu and proudly declared: “We haven’t got one. Dave, I believe you’ve been married nearly twenty years?” Dave beamed uxoriously at his wife. Ignoring the kick from Sarah I pressed on. “You’d be out by now.”

Dave’s innocent smile heralded the tumble weed. “Out from where?”

My throat tightened. “Prison, because if, instead of marrying her, you’d murdered her with say, an…axe?”

Sat in the car afterwards Sarah was justifiably furious.

“Thanks for ruining yet another night.”

“Well they made me sick. Who are they trying to kid, acting like teenagers?”

Sat on the couch three weeks later, in an attempt to thaw relations I decided to offer an olive branch. “Sarah, why don’t you ask Steph and Dave over for dinner. I’ll cook. Really I don’t mind.”

“That’s going to be difficult, she’s unfriended everyone on Facebook!”

“Why?” “She’s run off with her personal trainer. I never liked her anyway. Now make yourself useful darling and put the kettle on.” Sarah’s warm smile sent me to the kitchen, safe in the knowledge that no matter what, there would only ever be one girl for me.

Motoring Golf GTI Clubsport S What is it?

It’s the fastest front-wheel-drive car around the Nürburgring; a stripped-out hardcore celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Golf GTI and a limited edition collector’s piece all in one.

The Golf GTI Clubsport S is the result of asking engineers to do what they can to cement the GTI’s name in the hot hatch pantheon.

What’s under the bonnet?

Lifting the Golf’s bonnet will reveal the same two-litre, turbocharged petrol engine you’ll find elsewhere in the Golf range – notably the Golf GTI and Golf R. In this application it’s been tuned up slightly, producing 306hp – broadly similar to the Golf R’s output but with a different exhaust system freeing up a couple of horsepower.

That’s paired with the six-speed manual gearbox for weight purposes, as the extra few kilos of the dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) would work against the weight-saving nature of the Clubsport S.

less impressively. The sticky Michelin Pilot Cup tyres offer huge amounts of grip, too.

On the mixed and drying roads we used, the Clubsport S exhibited a little torque steer if you gave the car some stick, but far less than you might expect.

Otherwise, it’s a very neutral car to drive on the road.

What does the press think?

AutoExpress reckons that the Clubsport S has ‘even more involvement and surprising refinement’, while Autocar thinks that it’s ‘by a nose, the very best fast Golf you can buy’.

What do we think?

It seems odd to turn a car with such broad credentials into a two-seater sports car, especially as the rear compartment trim is still present, but you can’t really ignore the way it drives.

The Golf R might be a safer bet for all-weather performance, but the Clubsport S makes a great case for itself on dry roads and doesn’t feel as wrung out as other front-wheel-drive offerings of similar power outputs.

Losing the rear seats makes the Clubsport S a bit of a tough sell when silhouette rivals retain the family usability and two-seat competitors are commonly less expensive, but as all of the UK’s allocation of 150 have already been sold, it’s almost a moot point.

Short Story Christmas is Crafty “We’re doing Christmas differently this year,” Carol announced, carrying in huge shopping bags. “Roger, stop what you’re doing and give me a hand with this tree.”

Jonty wagged his tail. He knew all about Christmas, because it happened once every seven years. Roger would set up a tree in the lounge and then climb the creaky loft ladder for the box of decorations. The pair of them would coo over the little snowmen decorations made from cotton wool and toilet roll tubes, the doily angels, and the crepe paper snowflakes that they would stick to the patio doors.

Carol would get nostalgic and ask Roger to pour her a sherry and put on a Slade CD. And Jonty would lie under the coffee table, waiting patiently for a mince pie to fall on the floor.

“The theme is Rustic Cottage,” Carol said. “You’ve got to have a theme.”

“I thought we already had a theme,” Roger said glumly.

“Do stop sulking,” Carol said. “You decorate the tree, while I do a spot of stencilling on the patio doors.”

Jonty settled into his place beneath the coffee table.

Roger hung the new decorations in silence, while Carol sprayed the glass on the patio doors so that it looked like snow had drifted up the panes. Jonty waited for the sherry and Slade but they never came, in fact Carol went up to bed early, leaving Roger to lock up.

“I’ve been to this stall called Christmas is Crafty,” Carol said, unpacking the contents of her bags.

“It’s inspired me.”

“I like Christmas just the way it is,” Roger said, but judging from the smells coming from Carol’s shopping Jonty wondered whether Christmas had been vastly improved.

“Look at all the adorable new decorations I’ve bought,” Carol said. “Everything is handmade.”

“All the stuff before was handmade, by the children,” said Roger.

“The kids are all grown up now Roger; it’s time to move on,” Carol said, opening a box of dried clementines which had been studded with cloves and tied with sticks of cinnamon. “These things are handmade but better, you know, professional.”

Jonty game them an appreciative sniff.

“Honestly Jonty, get your nose out and give me some space,” Carol said. “Look at these Roger, good enough to eat?”

Jonty’s ears pricked up.

Carol showed them a box of gingerbread men delicately decorated with raisin buttons. Then she unravelled a raffia rope threaded with colourful popcorn, and a dozen huge pine cones sprayed with silver and gold.

Though Jonty regretted his lack of mince pie, he reminded himself that Christmas was different this year, so he waited in his basket until he heard sounds of snoring from the bedroom above. Then he padded into the lounge, a firm plan already in his mind. First he licked the snow off the patio doors. It tasted pleasantly of soap. Next, a well-aimed leap from the back of the sofa brought the fir tree down.

He then crunched his way through the gingerbread men and the clementines. They smelled better than they tasted. The raffia strings of popcorn proved interesting; he found there was no stopping once he’d begun, and it was necessary to eat the whole chain right to the end. Then he chased the pine cones across the floor. Finally, tired and queasy, he chewed them all up as well, just for fun.

Feeling thankful for Carol, he dozed amid the wreckage of this wonderful new type of Christmas.

Then he thanked Roger for kindly leaving the lounge door open; something that Roger had never once, in all Jonty’s days, done before.

If you’re considering alterations to your home or an extension, it may be helpful to understand how the process works and exactly what role your architect plays in bringing your idea to fruition.

Following agreement on the plans, we submitted a planning application during which time we liaised with the planning officer to slightly amend the design so an approval was gained.

After securing planning approval we moved on to the working drawings – the more technical ones – in order to secure building regulations approval.

This is a recently completed Pilkington Architecture project that involved the construction of an extension on the front of a detached house, over an existing study. The brief from the homeowner was to increase an existing small, single bedroom to a double with an NEWbathroom.

Homes & Gardens A lovingly created pot of winter flowering bedding plants, perhaps under-planted with a few small bulbs such as crocus or miniature daffodils, will make a lovely instant garden impact present for anyone. Despite the huge quantities of Christmas paraphernalia in garden centres now, any half decent centre will still have a good range of winter bedding plants and winter interest plants available.

Gardening Gardening Gifts If you have any gardening friends it is so easy to get them a present they’ll really enjoy and find useful this Christmas.

Any good local garden centre will have plenty of potential gifts in a wide range of prices, sizes and shapes to suit anybody from the complete novice to the most experienced gardener. Alternatively, take a look on the internet and get some gorgeous gardening gifts delivered right to your door.

Houseplants make brilliant presents, so why not choose a couple of really good-looking ones? At this time of year there are plenty, such as the indoor cyclamens and azaleas or a flamboyant poinsettia or a gorgeous Christmas cactus, which look fantastic whilst in flower – but don’t forget that lots of the foliage houseplants look great, too.

Make sure that you keep the plants at their best by placing them in a suitable position before you give them away.

Outdoor plants are also an ideal choice, but make sure that you know that the plant you are choosing will go to a suitable home. There is no use buying a lime-hating plant such as a Pieris, rhododendron, Camellia or azalea for somebody if they garden on chalk – although a supply of ericaceous compost and a good sized pot could also be a present from someone else if you plan carefully.

Holly’s Column Farewell…

This academic year I’ve decided to stay on at Belper School and complete a two-year A Level course. It’s fortunate that the high school I attended has a Sixth Form Centre with the subjects that I want to study, whereas some students are compelled to move because of subject choices or lack of sixth form in their school.

Although I would have chosen this path anyway, many others are now obliged to stay in education or in employment with training regardless, because of raising the age of participation to 18.

My Grandmother left school when she was 14, which seems very young to me now.

Though this never restricted her, I think that the 4 extra years in educational training can widen opportunities in later life. In some ways young people reaching 16 can feel restricted by the new law, while the age also allows new freedoms. At 16 you can ride a moped or lawn mower, own your own pet or have an alcoholic drink with a main meal.

More drastically, you can leave home, get married or join the army and, whilst you can make these decisions on your own, you’re still not trusted with a vote for another two years. A lot of us have strong feelings towards the important decisions others are allowed to have a say in and not having the right to vote can leave the younger generation misrepresented.

I’m looking forward to more independence when I turn 17 as I can learn to drive and relieve my mum of her ‘taxi driving’.

The Diary of a Local Mum Not Now, Bernard When I was younger, I remember reading the popular children’s book ‘Not Now Bernard’ by David McKee. The story has always stayed with me, although my feelings towards it have altered over the years.

It’s about a small boy (Bernard) who is trying to get his parents’ attention because there’s a monster in the garden who wants to eat him. His parents, engrossed in seemingly unimportant tasks, keep replying ‘Not now, Bernard’. The boy is subsequently eaten by the monster which then goes on to try and eat the parents. Still disinterested, they simply reply ‘Not now, Bernard’ to his roars, obliviously putting the bemused monster to bed in place of their son.

The idea that a boy could be ignored to the point of being eaten and beyond horrified me as a child... and quite rightly so. The parents were guilty of neglect of the highest order. I felt so sad for Bernard and let down by the fact that there was no storybook ‘happy ending’.

However, now I’m older with children of my own I do feel a bit differently about the book, which unsettles me slightly. Over the years (this is hard to admit, so bear with me)...I have developed a smidgen of empathy for Bernard’s parents. Now, I would never, ever condone paying your child so little attention that they’re eaten by a monster. Failing to notice that your son’s been replaced by said monster is beyond irresponsible. But ... there are many times when I’ve uttered the phrase ‘Not now’ (with ‘Bernard’ then echoing round my brain triggering waves of guilt, no matter how outlandish the request or inappropriate the situation).

The thing is, children will ask anything just as soon as the idea pops into their head or the ‘urgent’ need arises – anytime, anywhere. They’ll poke their head round the shower screen holding up the Argos catalogue if they’ve just found something they’d reealllly love for Christmas. They’ll ask for help tying

their shoelaces while you’re on the loo. They’ll urgently need to discuss the real reason for the demise of the dinosaurs at bedtime or they’ll commandeer the dining table for junk modelling just moments before you serve tea. There’s absolutely no concept of a ‘good time to ask’.

Parents these days get a lot of stick in the media for being too engrossed in their phones to notice their children, missing out on simple day-to-day interactions, pleasures like watching their faces as they play, or the fun of joining in their games and, sadly there are some parents who don’t interact as much as they should. However, I think there’s a lot of pressure on modern parents to make the whole world revolve around their kids...and it’s not necessarily healthy.

I recently read about an informal ‘study’ that a mum had posted on social media (ironically), supposedly to show how much ‘social media obsessed’ parents were missing out on. She sat in the corner of the room observing her child (without interacting) as he played, noting how many times he looked in her direction.

Unsurprisingly, he looked her way a lot. He was no doubt wondering what the heck she was doing!

Her point was that she had missed out on all those occasions when he was seeking her approval or input.

But, isn’t it also important that her child learns to play without her input or approval?

Of course, there’s a balance to be achieved, but while uninterrupted family time is vital and children should know that their parents are always there for them if needed, I think it’s also important for them to understand that their mums and dads sometimes have to do other things and can’t constantly be at their beck and call. Learning to wait a while for non-urgent things and being able to entertain themselves for short periods are important skills for children to learn.

So, I’m going to free myself from the guilt I feel every time I say ‘not now’. Children do have to learn that sometimes ‘now’ isn’t the time...as long as you always make some time later (and as long as there’s not a monster lurking in the garden, obviously).

Stamp and Deliver Once again, Derbyshire Scouts’ Stamp and Deliver scheme will be running in December 2016.

Since it began in 1982, the scheme has raised over £1million for local charities. Last year it raised £5000 for the BBC Colin Bloomfield Melanoma Appeal which supported the charity Skcin, raising awareness of skin cancer through ‘Sun Safe’ education, teaching people about the risks of UV and the importance of sun safety to promote prevention and early detection of the disease.

This year’s scheme will operate from Friday 2nd December, with last collections at 2pm on Thursday 15th December. All cards must be posted in one of the iconic yellow postboxes by that time. Cards are collected, sorted and delivered by local Scout groups in the delivery area, who receive a proportion of the sale of the stamp. The stamps cost 25p each and can be brought from over 200 outlets in the area. Full details of the sales points can be found at www.stampanddeliver.com.

All cards posted will be delivered by Christmas Eve. It is important to check the delivery area, which is shown on the website and on leaflets available at the sales points as, unfortunately, cards posted to addresses not listed cannot be delivered.

My dad suffers from dementia and is becoming increasingly reliant on my mum, which is hard for them both. Mum is 87 years of age – although she doesn’t look it – and hasn’t had an easy life in many ways, but she is the most generous, loving, caring person you could meet. She’s a wonderful mum and nanna to her three children and four grandchildren and we’d all like to let her know how much we appreciate everything she does!” Sue Grace Nominate someone to receive the next bouquet.

For those of you who have upgraded to Windows 10 either by design or by accident, you may have found yourself looking for the contacts you had in Windows Live Mail. Unfortunately with the upgrade, Microsoft has forgotten to ensure their safe arrival into the Windows 10 environment.

There is an App (program) in Windows 10 called ‘people’ which, when you have added your contacts to it, will integrate with the Mail program. Open the People App, then either add the contact’s details one by one or click the + sign and choose the email account you want the contacts to be saved from.

To help discourage an opportunist thief from targeting Christmas presents during the festive season, police officers are reminding people of simple security measures they can take to better protect their homes from crime.

Insp. Pat Howitt, who is in charge of policing in the Amber Valley area, said: “I would urge people not to leave expensive items, including electronic gadgets such as laptops, tablets and phones, in view of windows and doors as this can be a target for opportunist thieves over the Christmas period.

“Simple steps such as closing curtains at night, not leaving Christmas presents or valuables in plain view of people

Other crime prevention advice includes: • Keep doors and windows locked – it only takes seconds for an opportunist burglar to get into your property; • Leave a light on if you are heading out and buy timer switches to turn lights on at a specific point; • Keep valuables out of sight and consider placing high-value Christmas presents in a secure place instead of under the tree; • Mark your property with kits such as SmartWater and get bikes security marked, too; • Register valuables for free on the secure website www.immobilise.com, which helps police reunite recovered stolen items with their owners; • Be vigilant and report suspicious activity immediately to the police on 999 if a crime is in progress, 101 in a non-emergency or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Local History: Gentle Giants

This piece from the Society’s collection is part of an account of life at Broadholme, eighty years ago: ‘In the early 1930’s, the farm where I was born was a land of giants...Shire horses. They were used as power for the simplest mechanical devices right through to complicated reaping and binding machines at harvest time. Most of the Shires were docile, willing, intelligent animals and needed little encouragement. They could even be trusted with young children, though I was ten years old before I could manhandle the heavy awkward horse collar into position.

We children were given the easy but time consuming jobs like taking a pair of horses to be shod at the Blacksmith’s shop in Belper. We enjoyed leading them, tethered together by the halter. The sounds and smells peculiar to the smithy fascinated us as the shoes were shaped, heated and fitted to each hoof in turn while the Shires stood patiently, unconcerned at the smoke and banging. On the way back to the farm, we were able to ride bareback, holding on to the halter and the horse’s mane, for they knew the way home and needed no encouragement or direction.

The partners who owned the farm were also Shire horse dealers, mainly in conjunction with the railway companies which used Shire horses for parcel delivery and collection, and also for moving wagons in the goods station yards, sidings and docks. The horses, bought in the Midlands and Wales, were transported to Belper by rail in special horse boxes attached either to the front or rear of express passenger trains, so that within hours they could be available for collection from the horse dock at Belper goods station. My father would go to collect them, and occasionally I could go with him. As the express rolled to a stop, the guard would signal to the driver to ease back so that he could uncouple the horse box from the carriages, which was soon shunted into the horse dock. The engine recoupled to the train and, with a blast on the whistle and a hiss of steam, it was on its way again.

The next few minutes for Dad was a crucial time when his quiet introduction to the Shires, his calming words and gentle touch, would put them at their ease. The box doors were then opened, the ramp lowered and his charges led out one by one, tied to the horsedock railings and then haltered together, ready for the two-mile walk to the farm. They were led against the traffic with Dad in the centre of the road, prepared for calming action should any traffic upset them. On arrival at the farm, the horses were stabled, fed and watered and left to rest and recover for a while before a thorough examination by the stablemen. Perhaps later they would be let out into the paddocks where they usually had a gallop round as if really enjoying the freedom as they settled with the other horses.’

by Rosemary Annable. “A History of Freemasonry in Belper” will be given by Richard Moss on February 1st. Visitors are welcome and are charged £3. St John’s Heritage Centre on the Butts is open on the last Saturday of the month from 9.30 am to 12.00 noon with members in attendance.
