Of course, I know there are 24 hours in every day, but I always feel the days seem that little bit longer once the lighter nights are upon us.

I’ve got an interesting weekend ahead. My husband Roy received a voucher for his birthday last April (from Ruth who works with me and her husband Ed) to go ‘Zorbing’.

For those of you who haven’t heard of this activity, in a nutshell, it involves him being strapped inside a giant transparent hamster ball and being rolled down a hill!

Rather him than me! The voucher is for 2 people but you’ve probably already gathered that I won’t be participating. We’ve volunteered Ed but as I write this message, he’s currently (and rather suddenly if you ask me) developed a bad back. Ruth has gallantly offered to go in Ed’s place if his back doesn’t improve … as much as I don’t want to see Ed in pain, I would REALLY love to see our Ruth go rolling down a hill in one of those giant orbs!

Money Matters: Use It or Lose It The tax year is nearing its end and a new one commences on 6th April. Each year – dependent upon age, the composition of your total income, and any unpaid tax from previous years – you are given a personal allowance. The maximum unrestricted allowance permits all but the highest earners to enjoy a tax free income of £11,000 p.a.

Legitimate avoidance of tax remains a course of action actively encouraged by the Government, with the periodic introduction of varying tax-breaks.

Most are familiar with Individual Savings Accounts and this allows you to shield up to £15,240 into either a Cash or Stocks & Shares ISA (or combination of the two). Any interest, dividend income or capital growth is tax free with the exception of the 10% tax credit paid on all dividends.

From April 6th, if your total income (including streams such as wages, pensions, benefits and savings income) is less than the personal allowance, plus £5,000, you will be eligible to register for tax-free savings with your bank or building society accounts. Non-savings income is always taxed before savings income. So the tax-free band of £5,000 only applies if you earn less than £16,000 or if some of your savings income falls into the £5,000 that sits on top of your personal allowance.

There are other ways to effectively reduce your income tax bill including making pension contributions. Currently the Annual Allowance for pension contributions is £40,000, which can effectively (should you be able to fund it) create

an income tax neutral position on earned income from employment and self-employment (i.e. tax paid = relief given on contributions). However, a small percentage of individuals can receive 20% income tax relief on pension contributions up to £3600 gross, even if they have no income in the relevant tax year. (This was an incentive created to encourage people with zero or low earnings to save for their retirement, as effectively the £3600 contribution only costs £2,880 net – an uplift of 25% based purely on the net contribution made).

For the more discerning investor, there is also the option to invest into more sophisticated financial investments such as Enterprise Investment Schemes and Venture Capital Trusts, but these are not for the faint-hearted as, by their nature, they invest into higher risk assets such as fledgling businesses.

Remember though that whilst investments such as Stocks and Shares ISAs, Pensions, VCTs and EIS’s offer generous tax breaks, their value can go up or down and may be worth less than you paid in.

Just a Thought...

What a Card!

So it’s my daughter’s 3rd birthday. I’ll get her a nice card to go with her present: one of the easier assignments in my week, or so you would think.

As I strolled into the card shop considering whether she would like one with a badge on it or not, I was struck by an overwhelming sense of fear as I stood afoot a mountain of paper based peril. I had not bargained for the vast array of choice that was placed before me.

My mind began to race trying to locate the birthday section of the cards, let alone the ones for a ‘daughter’. As I scanned across the stack of assorted sentiments I found cards for anniversaries, deaths, weddings, thank yous, congratulations – which I concede are all fairly standard cards to have in a card shop. However, when I began to come across cards to be sent on behalf of the family pet to

the next door neighbour, my patience began to thin somewhat.

I hold the ideals of choice, equality and diversity at the core of my central belief system – apart from, it seems, when it comes to greeting cards! When you can send a card from your cat to your primary school teacher’s elderly relative once removed, I believe we have entered dangerous waters. And then you have the choice of said card in pink or blue depending on the relative’s gender. However, should there not be a more neutral colour choice for those who do not wish to be pigeon-holed by gender stereotyping? When I pondered this I knew things had gone too far. I left the shop enraged at my fruitless expedition. I’ve heard of pushing the envelope, but really!

The Better Life Green with Envy Our Better Life has always been about cooperation.

We try to work with nature and the seasons; we swap produce and ideas with neighbours and friends.

It’s never about competition...usually.

“You must come and see our new place,” a friend of ours simpered. “We’re still renovating, but the garden is looking lovely.”

In fairness, they’ve been renovating for months and months now and there’s no sign of the house surrendering yet.

Anne was very keen to go, principally because she likes looking around other people’s houses – when they’re in, I hasten to add.

The garden was, to my emerald eyes, spectacular. They had six chickens, each one a different breed and with its own pedigree, a humungous vegetable plot with three types of potato already in the ground and enough fruit trees to have made 48 litres of cider last autumn. By way of a contrast, we once harvested five sweet potatoes that wouldn’t fill a saucer and managed a mug of juice from a bag of foraged apples.

I smiled then, remembering how we’d agreed a tomato growing competition: Gardner’s Delight vs. Sweet Million – our conservatory vs. their leaky greenhouse.

We were given a whistle-stop tour of several fruit bushes and raspberry canes, a nod to the concrete pond (rectangular) and a visit to the earthworks soon to become a solar array. They also showed us where the water butts will sit and how they plan to follow our example, by linking them to a Rainwater Hub up the wall under the main drainpipe.

And I recalled those words of Robert Louis Stevenson: “Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant.” Mainly, it had to be said, because it was written in the seed catalogue.

I was quiet on the drive home, thinking about what we could do with more space. Anne, ever the practical one, knew just how to harness my ambitions. She drew up a list of things we need to do in March for our own little eco-paradise: 1. Take up more grass, so we can extend the mini-meadow to make it a midi-meadow. We’ll also need more fine sand for the 50 / 50 mix before we sow last year’s wildflower seeds and it’ll be a chance to delve into a traditional seed catalogue to diversify.

2. Spread the love by spreading the compost. Plus, this year I really want to look at doing something with seaweed. Incidentally, the ‘love’ does not extend to weeds.

3. Tend to the plants in the (world’s smallest) conservatory.

I tend to think everything is pot-bound, but sometimes I am right. It’s also a good time to check the drainage and keep a watchful eye on the temperature. It may only be March but it can be pretty toasty in there on a sunny day.

4. Generally, get busy. This covers a multitude of activities – everything from checking car boot sales for new old tools to turning over the veg patch and planting out onions and beans.

Days out with Dennis Go by Bus? Why Not??

Usually, my ‘Days Out’ are circular in that the traveller comes back a different way to that which they went. Sometimes it’s not practical to do that so, from time to time, I do an out and back article, with the route being the same both ways.

This is very much one for the shopper because we are off to the ‘Mecca’ of retail therapy – Meadowhall – the massive retail complex that lies to the east of Sheffield, almost in the shadow of the M1.

For those not travelling on a bus pass, a Derbyshire Wayfarer ticket from the first driver of the day will get you to Sheffield and back.

An additional fare will need to be paid to and from Meadowhall.

Travel Schönbrunn Palace, Vienna From a modest hunting lodge to a breath-taking palace and now a museum, Schönbrunn ranks among Austria’s top attractions, claiming seven million visitors a year.

Restored, extended and embellished over time on the edge of Vienna, it survived a turbulent past to become the favourite summer residence of Austrian emperors for almost three centuries.

Named ‘beautiful fountain’ after an artesian well, it will soon celebrate 20 years as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its ‘remarkable Baroque ensemble and synthesis of the arts’.

Beyond the wrought iron gates, the elegant façade, painted ‘Schönbrunn yellow’, rises across a vast courtyard where horse-drawn carriages invite visitors to explore the grounds in style.

But first of all, the palace beckons with over 1,000 rooms filled with chandeliers and gold, paintings, tapestries, imperial portraits, Rococo furniture and more. Much of what we see today is the legacy of Maria-Theresa, the 18th century empress and only female ruler in the Habsburg dynasty. So Schönbrunn enjoyed a golden age as palace and gardens were remodelled for the pleasure of the empress and her court. Most impressive is the dazzling Hall of Mirrors where, they say, six-year-old Mozart performed for the empress before ‘springing onto her lap and kissing her heartily’. The Blue Chinese Salon with its rice paper hangings, the Porcelain Room and the Millions Room decorated with IndoPersian miniatures are also due to MariaTheresa, reflecting her love for all things exotic.

A day would barely suffice to do justice to every room opened to the public, but of special note are the Walnut Room, used as audience hall by Emperor Franz Joseph, his wife Sisi’s apartments where a secret staircase allowed her to escape from the pressures of the Court, the 43 metre long Great Gallery which hosted banquets and balls, the Hall of Ceremonies and its monumental paintings, the Chapel and the

Napoleon Room where the French Emperor stayed when he occupied Vienna.

Beyond this palatial treasure-filled interior, the Habsburg displayed their wealth and power in extensive grounds, from the botanical garden and Europe’s oldest zoological park to the orangery, the palm house and the English and French gardens, the latter by a disciple of Le Nôtre who designed Versailles. Nature reserve, pristine gardens and recreation area all in one, the figures speak for themselves: 25 km of trees along the avenues, 30 km of hedges, 300,000 plants and 20 hectares of lawns mowed up to 21 times in season.

Entry to the gardens is free and locals and visitors alike come to relax, gazing in wonder at the blazing colours of superb flower beds, listening to the cool gurgling of Neptune’s fountain or rambling through dark mysterious woods. There’s a manicured maze, a set of 18th century follies named ‘Roman ruin’, 32 neo-classical sculptures and a triumphal arch, or gloriette, on the hill top with panoramic views over palace and garden and the city beyond.

It’s no wonder this is acclaimed as the best preserved Baroque garden in the world.

The Austrian Empire came to an end after the first World War but with its palace and gardens, Schönbrunn remains for all to enjoy and an enduring magnet for television and film crews, as seen in James Bond ‘The Living Daylights’ or the legendary Sisi trilogy.

The Rt Rev Alastair Redfern also highlighted the plight of the Syrian refugees and argued for a compassionate response to the humanitarian crisis. Following this, Mr Harrington took part in a Q&A, to directly address the questions and concerns of constituents.

Over the last few months I have spoken in a Parliamentary debate on the effects of the removal of drugs from the Cancer Drugs Fund. I was joined by MPs from all political parties bringing forward cases of constituents who have been affected. In my speech, I highlighted a case of a constituent with multiple myeloma, a blood cancer, who has seen his final drug for the condition, Imnovid, removed from the Fund before he could access it. This means that the removal of drugs from the Fund has created a situation where a doctor can continue to provide a cancer treatment for one patient but is now unable to do so for a new patient with the same cancer, even though it is likely to benefit them.

In February, I hosted a ‘Crisis in Syria’ event at St Peters Church in Belper as a number of constituents had written to me regarding the refugee crisis. The Minister for Syrian Refugees, Richard Harrington MP, was invited to speak at the event along with the Bishop of Derby, The Rt Revd Alastair Redfern.

Who is Horton?

I hereby designate the 15th of May as Horton Appreciation Day. According to the film ‘Horton Hears a Who!’, which is based on the book written by Dr Seuss, it was this day he became aware of the existence of another world that existed on a speck on a clover.

There are many things that have filtered into my consciousness after having watched this film at least 48 times. At first I watched with interest and amusement, but after it got into double figures I started to fall into zombie territory. I began to dangerously drift off into the dark recesses of my mind.

So – in order to wake myself up – I decided to change my perspective and begin to watch with new eyes. Perhaps I could discover some deeper meaning from this quirky tale my daughter has become all too obsessed with – I mean, enchanted by.

For those of you unfamiliar with the story (I once was one of those unenlightened folk) it concerns the imaginative elephant, Horton, whose large ears detect a noise from a speck on a clover that he learns is actually the teeny, tiny world of Whoville.

He then suffers ridicule and disbelief from his society as he tries to convince them of the existence of another world.

and forgiveness, perhaps?

I am sure after I have watched this film another 48 times I will have a whole new viewpoint on it but I aim to dwell no more on the repetitive nature of this task.

If you feel overwhelmed by the boredom of repetitive tasks, remember that it can actually give you the opportunity to delve deeper into the mysteries of space, time and an understanding of what it is to be human.

By simply changing your perspective, you really can change your world.

I have a funny feeling this might apply to life in general and not specifically to children’s films...

Without empirical knowledge, she is incapable of putting any trust into the assertions of Horton. Similarly, the Mayor of the tiny world of Whoville is ridiculed, yet both step bravely forwards to enlighten their respective societies. Recipe

Pork Jambalaya Cooked in just one pan and on the table in less than an hour, this is a great midweek family supper. Serve with garlic bread or a mixed green salad, if liked.

Serves: 4 Ready in: 55 minutes Ingredients: 1 tbsp groundnut oil 100g chorizo sausage, sliced 350g pork loin steaks, cut into chunks 1 onion, peeled and chopped 3 celery stalks, trimmed and chopped 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 2 tsp smoked paprika, plus extra for sprinkling 2 tsp Cajun seasoning 225g easy-cook long grain rice 700ml vegetable stock 100g fine green beans, chopped 1 large yellow pepper, deseeded and diced

Stir in the chorizo, green beans and yellow pepper into the pan and cook, uncovered, for a further 6-7 minutes until the rice and vegetables are tender, adding a little more stock if necessary. Serve sprinkled with a little more smoked paprika and freshly ground black pepper.

Method:

Heat 1 tsp of the oil in a large deep frying pan and fry the chorizo over a high heat until golden and the fat starts to run.

Remove from the pan with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper.

You can replace the pork in this recipe with diced chicken breast fillet or boneless thigh fillets. Alternatively, use large raw king prawns and add them to the pan in step 4 and cook until pink.

Add the diced pork to the pan and fry for 2-3 minutes, stirring all the time until browned.

Remove and set aside with the chorizo. Add the rest of the oil to the pan and fry the onion, celery and garlic for 5 minutes until beginning to soften.

Stir in the spices and rice and cook, stirring, over a medium heat for 2 minutes then pour in the stock and bring to the boil. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Return the pork to the pan, cover and simmer gently for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Beer Beers of the Month: April Surely April is about more than finishing off the Easter chocolate. Well, there’s St George’s Day, for one thing, which also happens to be Shakespeare’s birthday; but most important of all, spring is definitely here. Even if it’s stair-rodding it down with freezing cold rain it’s officially no more than an April shower.

So let’s try a couple of beers that will bring our taste buds back to life after all the strong dark beers they’ve wallowed in over the winter.

The first is Marston’s New World Pale Ale at 4.1% alcohol, a very pale beer hopped with an unnamed blend of Australian hops.

The nose absolutely screams pineapple with an overtone of elderflower suggesting (to me, but I’m not that expert!) that the varieties include Citra and Galaxy.

The palate is creamy, with yet more pineapple balanced by a quenching bitterness. The finish is more traditional, with a lingering hop bitterness perfect for a hot day (provided we get one, that is).

Single Hopped Kentish Ale from Shepherd Neame (4.5% alcohol) is actually brewed exclusively for Tesco and is an altogether different proposition. Here the hops are East Kent Goldings, a strain first grown in Shepherd Neame’s own hinterland more than two centuries ago. The floral aromas and flavours – of lavender, according to the bottle-label – are much more subdued. The nose is fresh, not over-assertive and, if anything, grassy. The palate is pleasingly light, and here the lavender does come through, but subtly. The finish is earthy, dry, bitter, and very, very English. Drink one on St George’s Day!

Beers of the Month: May Cider is always seen as a summer drink, and local Apple Days are always held in October, so why are we featuring it in May? Apple days celebrate not cider but the apple harvest and apples in general. But October is when the cidermaker’s year really begins. That’s when the main harvest and when the hard labour of milling and pressing gets under way in earnest.

Once it’s gone through its first fermentation, the fresh-pressed juice is sealed away for its long, cold, slow, maturation to emerge fresh and bright in May. That’s when the Big Apple Association holds the Cider & Perry Trials at Putley Village Hall in Herefordshire and when the Campaign for Real Ale hosts its national Cider & Perry Competition at Reading Beer Festival. The ciders entered in these competitions are the genuine farmhouse item – still, strong, and 100% fresh-pressed juice and not what you’d usually find in supermarkets. However, here are two that come close: Chaplin & Cork’s Somerset Reserve is named after the two cidermakers at the Shepton Mallet Cider Mill.

And it’s very good, with an overpowering aroma of freshly-picked apples, a palate that’s quite light for its alcohol content (6.8%), only lightly carbonated, and an authentic burst of tannin in the finish.

Henry Weston’s Vintage from Herefordshire is even stronger at 8.2%, so treat it with respect.

The nose isn’t quite as pronounced, and the palate is sweeter, richer, rounder – creamy, even – while the finish is also quenchingly bitter.

Whilst neither of these is what an aficionado would call “traditional”, they’re both excellent in their own right.

Humour: The University of Life I had an argument with a friend recently about the purpose of universities within contemporary society (that’s right, we don’t discuss The Great British Bake Off like normal human beings, we hit the big issues, and we hit them hard).

Next year’s students will have just sent off their applications, and thousands across the UK are excitedly waiting to embark on the next stage of their lives at Bristol, Birmingham or, erm, Bangor.

With this in mind, I was griping about the fact that, back when I took my degree, I couldn’t help but feel that a disturbingly high proportion of my fellow scholars didn’t seem that bothered about the actual work.

‘Some people don’t have a passion for studying like you did,’ my friend said, as I complained about lecture-mates who appeared to have cruised out of top fee-paying schools and stumbled into uni simply because that’s what everyone else was doing. I was more than happy with her point, of course, although I did have to ask what these people were doing at a university. She argued that, for some, higher education isn’t really about intellectual improvement, but about developing social skills, learning to be a proper human, taking those first brave steps into grown-up society and finally washing your own pants. The problem is, unless I’m grossly mistaken, universities are there to challenge and enlarge our intellects – not to function as some kind of enormous adult crèches.

I take issue with this unspoken consensus that somewhere along the line higher education became all about ‘personal development’. To my ears, it just sounds like bourgeois self-indulgence, like the gap-year fantasy that says you don’t really know yourself until you’ve spent sixteen months mincing around the Himalayas in a sari with a bunch of people called Theo. If you’re purely in the business of learning how to operate a washing machine for the first time, surely there are more efficient ways of doing it than whilst also struggling to plough your way through the complete works of Anton Chekhov?

Picking up valuable life lessons is, of course, one of the many excellent side benefits of going to university. The experience offers far more than

simple scholarly value and that is undeniably a good thing. But does it therefore follow that we should be stuffing our institutions with as many young people as possible, regardless of their academic aspirations, simply so they can work out how best to prepare a couscous salad? To me, that sounds like a very bizarre distribution of resources.

I don’t know much about politics, but I can’t help but feel like the drive to fill Britain’s universities in the late nineties was really just a thinly-disguised government point-scoring exercise. For me, New Labour confused the obviously admirable desire to give everyone – regardless of background – an equal shout at securing a place in higher education with the frankly pointless goal of making sure every last soul in the country has a degree, even if it is in Turf Management. Tony Blair dreamed of a society where everyone was above average, but you can’t eradicate averageness. All you can do is move the goalposts around.

So what am I really saying here? I guess it’s a message to the glorious youth of our nation - if you want to study, go study. But if all you really want to do is snort Jägermeister through your earhole, is it worth the £40,000 debt on the other side? Because I’ve worked it out, and forty grand could buy you approximately eight thousand Jäger Bombs. Exactly.

Book Reviews: Older, But Not Always Wiser The main characters of these books may be in their twilight years, but they certainly aren’t content to sit back and spend their pensions on Werther’s Originals and bingo nights. With amateur sleuths, explosive experts and adventurers amongst them, they’ll keep you reading well past a sensible bedtime.

The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper Phaedra Patrick Arthur Pepper likes the quiet life, but that all changes when he discovers a charm bracelet hidden away in his late wife’s things. Arthur’s cross-country quest to discover the meaning of each of the charms sees him uncovering a side to his wife he never knew existed. But will his new found knowledge help him come to terms with her death, or forever taint his memories of her? A thoroughly enjoyable read, with great characters and a page-turning storyline, this is Phaedra Patrick’s debut novel, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see her on the bestseller lists very soon.

The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared Jonas Jonasson Allan has just about had enough of his care home, with its condescending manager, rubbish food and endless rules. So on his 100th birthday he makes his escape, in his slippers. After stealing a suitcase full of money, Allan begins a dash across country, picking up new friends as he goes (including an elephant called Sonya). As we learn of his extraordinary life, it becomes clear that there’s rather more to this centenarian than meets the eye, including a passion for explosives…

The Extra Ordinary Life of Frank Derrick, Age 81 J.B. Morrison Being run over by a milk float wasn’t on Frank’s to-do list for the day, and he sure as heck isn’t going to let some interfering home-help try to baby him.

Nope, he’s quite content on his own, with his cat Bill, his DVDs and a series of cold callers trying to sell him things he doesn’t need. But home-help Kelly Christmas proves rather more likeable than he expected, and he starts to realise that life can indeed begin again at 81. With his biting sense of humour, Frank will keep you laughing all the way through this immensely entertaining book.

Elizabeth is Missing Emma Healey 82-year old Maud is determined to solve the mystery of where her best friend Elizabeth has disappeared to. While she’s at it, she’d also like to figure out what happened to her sister, who went missing more than 60 years ago. The problem is that Maud has been getting a bit forgetful lately, and the clues keep getting muddled in her head. With twists and turns aplenty, you’ll be left guessing until the end. Definitely a ‘just one more chapter and then I’ll go to sleep’ kind of book.

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry Rachel Joyce Staid, reliable Harold lives with his wife Maureen in Devon. When Harold receives a letter from an old friend, Queenie, telling him she’s terminally ill, he pens a short reply and sets off to the post box. But his walk to the end of the road turns into a somewhat longer trip, as he decides to deliver the letter in person, and on foot.

As he travels the long road north, both Harold and Maureen are given the time to look back on their long marriage, and figure out whether it can be saved. Beautifully written, and at times extremely poignant, this book is highly recommended.

The Church of All Saints

The Church of All Saints, Ashover, was built between 1350 and 1419 by Thomas Babington, although the south porch is much older – dating from around 1275. The church contains one of the few Norman lead fonts in England dating from about 1150. The font is decorated with twenty figures, mounted in pairs. During the Civil War and the Commonwealth (1641- 1660) the font was buried for safekeeping and restored to its present position after the Restoration. Outside the church, to the west, is a stone coffin dated around the year 1200.

It is said that if you walk around the coffin three times, then lie inside with your eyes closed, you will hear the sounds of ghostly chains, quite faintly at first then louder as time passes! As if a haunted empty coffin was not enough, both the church and churchyard are supposedly haunted by a figure of a headless woman. This ghost is said to be the wife of farmer John Towndrow who bludgeoned her to death before cutting off her head and killing himself. It is doubtful you will bump into this spectre as its last recorded appearance was in the north aisle of the church during 1890.

Health, Beauty & Fitness ahead. After a short distance the track swings left; ahead lies a motocross race track, cross it carefully and proceed between the two sets of fences (see photo).

Continue on the path past the mouth of a disused quarry, being aware of the motocross course at all times.

The path crosses the track twice before approaching a stone bridge over the River Amber. At this point the river looks rather like a well-developed stream.

According to the dog walker I chatted to about this route, this next section can become boggy after heavy rain.

Safe path between fence lines

Cross the bridge and turn left, then walk up the field keeping the wall/fence to your left. Continue in the same direction into a second field. Look ahead to the right for an open gateway with a stone squeeze stile next to it. Pass through the stile/gate and continue through the next two fields via stiles keeping the field boundary to your right as you go. On entering the fifth field through a line of tall trees, the Elizabethan Goss Hall is on the right. Keep to the path and pass in front of the Hall to a metal gate and a stile. Go through the gate and the stile out onto a lane. Turn left and walk down the lane for approximately half a mile.

Goss Hall

Goss Hall is one of three old halls dating from a time when Ashover was divided into three manorial estates. During the reign of Elizabeth I the owner Anthony Babington was executed for treason and Goss Hall gifted by the Queen to Sir Walter Raleigh. Goss Hall is reputed to be haunted by a pipe smoking ghost that fills the house with the smell of tobacco smoke. (A link to Sir Walter Raleigh bringing tobacco to this country perhaps?)

This ghost was so diligent in its smoking duties that during the 1950s one owner was forced to leave the hall due to the smell of the ghostly smoke.

As you walk down the lane you will pass a house/cottage on the left and footpaths to both left and right. Ignore these paths and look for a wide track crossing the lane around a quarter of a mile after passing Greenend Farm (also on the left). At the crossing ahead along the lane lies Overton Hall; as with many of the sites in this area it too is considered to be haunted. Do not head towards Overton Hall but instead take the track to the left and follow it up the hill. Views down onto Overton Hall are available through the trees to the right of the track.

Some of my research suggests that this may be an old packhorse trail; evidence for this becomes clearer when the route passes through a stile directly ahead and into a field. Follow the obvious path across the field, noting as you go that it is paved, although in places the paving is overgrown. Such paving was often put in place to provide the pack animals with better grip and reduce erosion. As the path nears the end of the field the ground falls away sharply into a hollow and the paving turns into a set of steps.

Descend the steps and exit the field into the hollow. Follow the path down towards the River Amber; it is worth noting that where the ancient paving is absent there is quite noticeable erosion. After a short distance, the path meets a disused Bridge over the River Amber railway line and now bears left along the old track bed before going to the right and resuming its course down to the river.

Remnants of the paving are less evident along this stretch, but the small bridge that crosses the River Amber is of a type that lends weight to this once being a packhorse trail.

Once over the river, continue up the path towards Ashover. Note that the paving is being used as the foundation of an old drystone wall, and how the path has been affected by erosion. Continue up this path until it leads out alongside the Old Poets’ Corner into the centre of the village. From here it is a matter of retracing your route past the church and back to the car park, to end the walk.

Motoring Range Rover on Test It’s the dreaded question that anyone even remotely connected to cars fears more than any other: what’s your favourite car? But finally I might have the answer: the Range Rover.

Not the Sport or Evoque, but the good old fashioned, full fat Rangie.

A looming family holiday involving a 1,500-mile trip gave the perfect excuse to borrow the car, and after two 13-hour shifts behind the wheel I can honestly say there’s nothing else I’d rather have been in. Here’s why: firstly, it’s super comfortable. The front seats in our Range Rover were heated and cooled and had more adjustments than a home hi-fi amplifier from the 1980s. The huge armchair-like seats with cushioned headrests never dulled a muscle and left us with no aches and pains.

speed of 135mph and a 0-60mph time of 6.8 seconds, it’s brisk enough for French Autoroutes. It piles on speed in a smooth and linear fashion, quietly and without fuss, whilst adding to the feeling of luxury travel.

However, what really sets the Range Rover apart are the little touches. Things like the soft-close doors, the illuminated logos projected onto the floor by the wing mirrors at night, and the front seat armrests that adjust to the perfect height. I love the fridge in the centre console, the cameras all around the car that make it a doddle to park, and the split tailgate that automatically opens and closes at the touch of a button.

With a five-year-old on board, the £7,300 entertainment pack (yes, you read that right) was a blessing. Two 10.2inch rear screens and wireless headphones meant Finding Nemo could work his fishy magic at keeping the ‘Are We Nearly There Yets’ at bay until at least Dover. The multimedia system might be showing its age a little, but it works well. It takes seconds to hook your phone up for music streaming, the satnav might look a little dated but it got us to France, Switzerland and home without fail and it’s simple to set a DVD running for the rear occupants while listening to Dad FM in the front.

But above all, it’s the fact that despite all this luxury and Rolls Royce-rivalling opulence, it’s still so utterly capable off-road. As we arrived in Villars, Switzerland, the snow was falling heavily and cars were being abandoned up the mountain as snow chains failed to do their jobs. But not the Range Rover. A flick of the all-terrain response button to its ‘Snow & Ice’ setting and away we went.

So there you have it. The one car I would buy if I had to live it with it for the rest of my life. Just as long as I could afford the £109,710 for the pleasure…

Then there’s the size – I know Range Rovers are massive, but when it comes to getting a ski trip’s worth of luggage inside, it coped admirably. Despite using up the entire boot space there was ample room inside; enough to curl up for a snooze in the back and enjoy the equally cosseting rear seats when my wife drove.

For its size it’s no slouch. Our test car had the delightful 4.4-litre SDV8. Despite only returning 26mpg, with a top

Marehay Garage The garage on Derby Road in Marehay has been a familiar and reliable fixture in the village since it was first established by William Hunt back in 1931. The business grew, and in the 1960s William’s sons John and David joined the firm. It became a Vauxhall franchise in 1965 and has been known for new and used car sales as well as parts and servicing.

But, just as the garage has altered throughout its history, it is once again time for a change. John and David Hunt have taken the decision to leave the business, passing it over into the capable hands of current General Manager, Ian Dawes.

With effect from 31st March, Marehay Vauxhall will become Marehay Garage Services Ltd, a Vauxhall authorised repairer, providing servicing, warranty work and parts, all to the same high standards that have earned the garage its excellent reputation over the years.

While the new and used car sales showroom will close, the service reception area is being refurbished and relaunched, with its new look due for completion by the end of March.

Customers new and old are welcome to come along to see the refit and say ‘hello’ to most of the familiar friendly faces.

While, regrettably, some staff will be leaving from the car sales side of the business, 17 members of the Marehay team will remain, offering customers the warm welcome that they have come to know.

Gardening: Go On, Grow Your Own! Enjoying a delicious meal which includes some home grown ingredients is a wonderful feeling – it fills you full of just the right sort of pride (and maybe even a little bit of smugness!). It simply feels good to indulge in a bit of Grow Your Own and then reap the rewards.

You may well have been sowing and potting on vegetables for a while now, but if you’re behind schedule or haven’t produced vegetables before, don’t panic – there’s still time to grow just about any crop in your plot this year.

Most plants can be raised from seed now, but there are a few that are likely to give a much better yield with an earlier start. Instead, buy in plants of crops such as tomatoes, sweet peppers, chilli peppers, melons and aubergines over the next month or so.

Some vegetables can be directly sown now into well-prepared garden soil in a suitable spot in all but the coolest gardens – beetroot, lettuce, beans, peas, carrots, rocket, spinach to name but a few. Slightly more tender crops such as sweetcorn, squash and courgettes fare better if given a bit of extra heat when you are germinating the seeds, which is where an electrically heated propagator really comes into its own. The seedlings may then need pricking out and potting on until they are sturdy enough to live in the great outdoors, but try to ‘harden off’ the young plants before placing them into their final positions as they may be damaged by cold, wind or rain. Put the young plants outside on warm days once the weather has stabilised, and bring them back under cover at night. Leave them outside after a week or so, covering them with fleece at night to let them acclimatise.

Holly’s Column Work Experience It has been reported in the media recently that children in England are unhappier at school than their peers in almost every other country. Many reasons are given for this but high on the list are bullying, feeling left out by other children, poor relationships with teachers and low self-esteem due to negative body image.

Matthew Reed, Children’s Society chief executive has said “We need to find a way to make young people feel happier about their lives to avoid storing up problems for the future.”

It’s clearly not related to the wealth of the country as children from much poorer nations still report a much higher level of happiness. Matthew Reed says: “We are one of the richest nations in the world yet the happiness of our children is at rock bottom.” Teachers’ Unions have urged the Government to devote more time in the curriculum to programmes that help prevent bullying and challenge negative attitudes. But how do such programmes work? I have been able to do some work experience looking at this very issue.

For 8 weeks I have been helping with an after-school drama club at a local primary school that is specifically designed to help pupils develop more confidence, self-esteem and more positive, hopeful attitudes.

Amongst the group members are children who struggle with social skills and making friends and others who have well-developed skills and can model positive behaviours.

Some children have language and communication difficulties that make it hard to pick up social cues and unknowingly put others off making friends with them.

The children have been brilliant and it’s great to see how they support each other in the ‘safe’ environment of a drama group. This was achieved by starting to play drama ‘get-to-know-you’ games to break the ice which developed into more advanced techniques in how to work well with others. People don’t often realise their own strengths, personal qualities such as curiosity, perseverance and empathy. We gave a quiz to the children to see what they thought their strengths were and then compared it to one their parents/carers had completed. In contrast to the theory above, the children seemed to recognise their strengths although sometimes alternate to the parental view. The surveys opened conversations between parents/carers and the

child, encouraging an ego-boosting discussion about the child’s achievements and how to use them in everyday life.

We also looked at processing emotions like anger and sadness then, in a theatre and real world context, how you would show or control these emotions. Then we practised these new-found skills in improvised role-playing situations with great success. For example: “I’m very upset – my hamster has just died”, “I’m sorry to hear that but you gave it a really good home.” As opposed to, “Well it’s not very expensive to buy a new one”. These scenes soon turned comical and were presented together as a pantomime in front of their year to give the children an extra ego-boost.

I can see a lot of value in programmes like this and although preventing the problem in early stages of life is beneficial, I think the target groups should maybe be higher up in education focusing on secondary instead of primary.

The Diary of a Local Mum Milestones Rolling over, first teeth, first words – there are so many milestones to be celebrated throughout childhood. As a parent you’re always by your child’s side, encouraging them to roll onto their tummy, be brave and take that step, utter a new word, read their first book, swim without armbands, climb onto the next step of the climbing frame...

And that’s what we’re here to do – to encourage and support our little ones as they grow. Each achievement is met with cheers, applause, hugs and praise (and countless photos and videos of the momentous event, obviously!). But, although you continue to celebrate and praise, there comes a point when these milestones stop being exciting and start being scary. You may be cheering, but inwardly a knot begins to form as you realise that each new milestone marks the transition from baby to child, to teen, to adult – and it happens at an alarming rate.

First steps become first shoes, then school shoes, football boots and (eek) high heels! You go through that back-breaking stage where your toddler will only walk whilst holding on to your hands as you stoop over, but then they take tentative steps on their own and, before you know it, they don’t want to hold your hand in public anymore.

That first night in their own cot in their own room is really daunting but they eventually sleep through the night (yippee!). You can once again enjoy several hours of unbroken sleep and wake up feeling human; it’s bliss. But, before you know it, they’ve gone from the independence of their first night in their own room to their first sleepover at a friend’s house, their first school residential, or Beaver/Cub/Rainbow/Brownie camp. Your baby has gone from your bedside to their own room, to being out there in the big wide world... without you! You’re hit with the realisation that they’re no longer the helpless little baby that needed you constantly (draining as it was), but they’re becoming their own person. An independent little soul who can dress themselves, pack their own bag, tie their own shoelaces, and brush their own teeth.

You’ve encouraged and celebrated this transition and

now you’re just starting to realise what it actually means.

I came across this brilliant poem by Stephanie Turner recently and instantly began to well up. There’s such a conflict of emotion that occurs as you will your child to move on to the next stage but then instantly want to press rewind (‘Hooray! They’ve slept in their own bed! Oh no, they’ve slept in their own bed...’): I won’t always cry, Mummy, when you leave the room, and my supermarket tantrums, will end too soon, I won’t always wake, Daddy, for cuddles in the night, and one day you will miss, having a chocolate face to wipe, You won’t always wake to find my foot is kicking you out of bed, or find me sideways on your pillow, where you want to lay your head, You won’t always have to carry me in asleep from the car, or piggy back me down the road, when my little legs can’t walk that far.

So cherish every cuddle, remember them all, Because one day Mummy, I won’t be this small.

It may be easy to look back with affection on the supermarket tantrums that once made you wish the ground would swallow you up and, when you’ve trying to snatch just a few more minutes of precious sleep, having a toddler’s foot in your ear is never going to fill you with glee – but it’s true to say that these moments are gone too soon. I’m a huge fan of cuddling my children at every given opportunity and I will continue to do so until they ask me to stop (in public, at least), because I’m painfully aware, as they continue to march through the milestones, that one day they’ll no longer be small...but I’ll always be their Mum.

Short Story Alpaca on the Line “Once again we apologise for the delay.”

Godfrey, trapped in a stuffy train carriage cluttered with empty food wrappers, rolled his eyes at the announcement.

His wife, Betty, had gallantly joined the queue for the buffet, so now he was bored and had no one to entertain him. The young man opposite was absorbed in his Spycraft magazine, unconcerned that he was taking up all of Godfrey’s leg room.

“It’s amazing what they can do now,” Daniel said in awe.

Godfrey had already noted from the badge pinned to the man’s shirt that his name was Daniel Goffin and that he’d been attending a first aid training course. He’d also observed from the reserved card in Daniel’s seat that they would only be sharing this table until the next station, which was of little comfort given that the train wasn’t even moving.

Daniel looked staggered.

“We are currently awaiting a farmer’s assistance to herd a stray alpaca off the line,” the announcement continued. Daniel looked up from his book.

“What’s an alpaca?” he said to no one in particular. Godfrey smiled to himself.

“Very good question,” Godfrey replied. “It’s interesting, isn’t it, how most people are unaware of real life espionage situations?”

“Are they?” Daniel seemed amazed.

“Very much so,” Godfrey continued. “I spent years in the Secret Service so I can always spot a code word when I hear it”.

“Isn’t it just?” Godfrey agreed. “Then the bag must be placed in a rubbish bin at the next station.”

“Why?” he said finally.

“Because the agent will have placed the data in an empty coffee carton or something like that.” Godfrey tried to contain his exasperation.

“Why are you telling me this?” Daniel asked suspiciously.

“Because Daniel Goffin,” Godfrey pulled a plastic bag out of his knapsack and slid it across the table, “you’ve been chosen.”

“Why me?”

“I believe they felt your first aid training might come in handy.”

Daniel turned a shade of green.

“Is there a reward?” he asked finally.

“Surely serving your country is reward enough?” Godfrey said.

“Think of it as a kind of jury service.”

“A code for what?” Daniel put down his magazine.

Daniel touched the carrier bag gingerly.

“The ‘alpaca’ naturally refers to an agent on this very train who is in possession of top secret data,” he whispered. “’On the line’ means his cover’s been blown.”

Daniel’s eyes sparkled.

“Why would they announce it?” Daniel asked, dumbfounded.

“That’s the interesting bit,” Godfrey said. He leaned in closer.

“Now they need a ‘farmer’.”

Daniel frowned.

“A ‘farmer’, as that periodical you’re reading will no doubt tell you, is a civilian volunteer.” Godfrey scanned the carriage to see if anyone else was listening. “Their task is to collect the data and deposit it safely. It’s your classic dead drop.”

“How?” Daniel had also started whispering.

“The volunteer goes from table to table collecting up all the refuse into a special bag. It looks like a normal supermarket carrier bag but it is impregnated with a microscopic homing device.”

“It’s your chance to be a hero,” Godfrey added magnificently.

“I’ll do it.” He stood up decisively, bumping his head on the baggage rack.

“Good man,” Godfrey said, “if anyone asks, this conversation never happened.”

He watched him go just as Betty returned.

“What’s that strange young man doing?” she said, handing him a packet of biscuits. “You’ve not been playing secret agents again have you? You did promise.” The train shunted into motion.

“He’ll be alright,” Godfrey smiled, stretching out his legs.

“I’ve just given him a little project to keep him busy.”

Derbyshire Constabulary’s first Digital PCSO has launched an online blog as part of a county-wide ‘Protect Yourself Online’ cybercrime initiative.

Similar to a traditional police community support officer, PCSO Shevani Raichura works closely with communities to offer advice, promote safety messages and reduce vulnerability, however all of it is online.

The first of her dedicated blog posts looks at the dayto-day role of the Digital PCSO, what is involved, and how PCSO Raichura went from policing the streets of Littleover to supporting the online community.

The regular blog posts will feature in the cyberhub and will include the latest campaign news, address any emerging scams, and also offer tailored advice on how web users can protect themselves online.

Local History: A Visit to Belper Mills

In 1829, Sir Richard Phillips published his account of “A Personal Tour through the United Kingdom”. In this extract, he describes his visit to Belper: I proceeded to Belper to view the superb establishment of the Messrs. Strutt, cotton spinners. The excellent road lay through the most delightfully variegated country. On crossing the river, I beheld long lines of cottages, built for the residence of the families employed in Messrs.

Strutts’ smaller factory at Melford. (sic) Passing this, the extensive but straggling and picturesque town of Belper, covered the eastern hill. What remains of the old town, is not a tithe of the present one, and the whole is now supported by Messrs. Strutts’ gigantic mills.

I approached these with mingled pleasure and astonishment. A manufactory, in such hands, presented none of the usual drawbacks on one’s feelings. They never discharge their workmen; and good conduct is a life interest in comfort! The picturesque beauty of the situation, the height and extent of the buildings, and the increase of the busy throng, as I entered the yard, was exhilarating. The effect grew as I approached, for the distance of two or three hundred yards, the noise, produced by the united rattling of thousands of small wheels, was like the sound of a hail storm on a large skylight, or the fall of an immense sheet of water.

There are five oblong factories and two circular ones. The five are six storeys high, with ten or twelve windows on each storey. The circular buildings have forty or fifty more.

In this establishment, and at Melford, Messrs. Strutt employ 1,300 hands of both sexes and different ages, and spin 18 tons of cotton per week.

This manufactory produces the cleanest and most perfect yarn made in England, which appears to arise from the systematic perfection of all the machines, and from the astonishing cleanness of every part of this great factory. The wheels are as bright as the grate of a good housewife’s drawingroom, and though cotton is a dusty article, yet I

nowhere saw either dirt or dust. At the same time, order prevails throughout, for as the main shaft gives no respite to the carding, roving, and spinning machines, so every attendant diligently and silently watches the lines of bobbins which are performing their miraculous evolutions, while the other apparatus are correcting and regulating the stages and steps of the production.

The whole is turned by eight or nine water wheels, of about twenty-four feet diameter, and twenty feet in length. The fall is about twenty feet, and the admirable contrivances of revolving balls (adopted in the steam-engine) are affixed, to render the power uniform, by varying the depth of the falling stream. In truth, it is one of the features of the entire establishment, that all that can be performed by machinery, is so performed, and that the machinery is the very best for its purpose.

On May 4th, Robert Mee discusses Derbyshire Associations for the Prosecutions of Felons, 1702-2013. All are welcome. Visitors are charged £3. The Heritage Centre is open on the last Saturday of the month from 9.30 am to 12.00 noon, and members are on hand to help with queries.
