Welcome to the February / March issue of All Things Local. As you read this, we’re now well into 2026 and the festive season no doubt feels like a distant memory. How are your New Year’s resolutions going? Many will have fallen by the wayside by now … so if you’re still sticking with them, give yourself a pat on the back! Of course, resolutions don’t just have to be made at New Year – you can make, or change, them at any time. If you’ve started off with something that now feels a bit too ambitious, why not adapt your resolution? If there’s an aspect of your life you want to work on, then small steps in the right direction are better than giving up altogether. And whatever it is that you may be challenging yourself to, make sure you’re giving yourself credit for your achievements, no matter how big or small. It always pays to be your own cheerleader! We’re now well past the shortest day on 21st December, so we can start to look forward to (and look for!) the first signs of spring. We love looking out for the first snowdrops as they push their way through frozen ground to show us that brighter days are just around the corner. The days will gradually get longer and lighter as the weeks progress and we begin to feel that ‘spring’ in our step. Then, on 29th March, the clocks will ‘spring forward’ and, although we will have to forfeit an hour of sleep, we will benefit from longer evenings … so it’s arguably a sacrifice worth making!

Don’t forget that Valentine’s Day is coming up on 14th February, and Mothering Sunday is on 15th March. If you want to spoil the special someone or mother figure in your life, please consider supporting local businesses who would be only too happy to help you create the perfect treat to show how much you care. I knew it wouldn't be a cheap job but I wanted the best and T Nutt & Sons were very competitive on price. The fitting went without a hitch. The room was an awkward shape so it required an experienced and professional team and that is what we got. The carpet required a seam, which you genuinely cannot see. The room looks amazing. The fitters were quick, polite, clean and professional. I cannot recommend T. Nutt and Sons highly enough. I will definitely be going back for my next carpet or flooring.

A More Civilised Way to Proceed

Judge the parties will jointly appoint a suitably qualified family law professional, often a barrister or a retired Judge to fill the role.

In recent years there have been various initiatives to encourage parties in family dispute to arrive at a settlement without going to court. The umbrella term is Alternative Dispute Resolution which includes methods including arbitration, early neutral evaluation and mediation.

As with a lot of things in life, there are benefits in “going private”. Speed – these hearings can often take place more quickly than the Court can list them. Comfort – private FDRs usually take place in bespoke settings where privacy and confidentiality are assured. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for public court buildings where often conference rooms are in woefully short supply.

I work predominantly in family law, advising married and unmarried couples of their rights and entitlements and helping them find a solution to their issues, be it dividing a property or resolving wider financial matters within the context of a divorce.

The only downside is the cost of the Private FDR Judge. However, this cost is usually relatively modest and is often more than offset by cost savings in being able to deal with matters more quickly and efficiently.

Within financial remedy proceedings the second substantive court hearing is called a Financial Dispute Resolution Hearing or FDR. It is an opportunity once all necessary information about the case has been obtained to have a hearing at court where the focus is on achieving a consensual settlement and avoiding the cost, stress, delay and uncertainty of a final hearing where a decision will be made by a Judge. Everything said within the FDR hearing to facilitate settlement is confidential and cannot be referred to at any future hearings. The FDR Judge will give guidance to the parties about the strengths and weaknesses of their case and the likely parameters for any settlement. The parties are then encouraged to try and settle the case based upon the indications of the Judge. It is a unique opportunity to have frank conversations and to test arguments with the aim of reaching a settlement. The profession has developed a similar system called a private FDR. Instead of a Court appointed

I have represented a growing number of people who have agreed to take part in a private FDR. All but one case settled on the day. The other case settled only a few weeks later – so far, an extremely high success rate. All in all, I have found the process more civilised. It is a good process refined where the parties benefit from being legally represented, having their cases presented by specialist professionals which is often crucial if the case is not only to settle but also crucially to settle in the best possible terms. Innovative Finance ISAs into Cash ISAs. This ban won’t apply to transfers between Cash ISAs or Cash ISAs into Stocks & Shares ISAs.

As you read this you will possibly be in a frantic pursuit to beat end-of-tax-year deadlines as one tax year ticks to a close and another starts the next day. Ensuring you have topped up your ISA or pension is usually a ‘use it or lose’ it exercise, but is it?

There are other valuable tax-breaks available, including saving into a pension scheme. Employees can invest up to 100% of their pensionable earnings (capped at £60,000). The tax-relief on pensions is very attractive, and the £60,000 contribution could have a net cost of £48,000 or even less depending on your highest tax rates. (The difference is the income tax-relief). Those without pensionable earnings can also save up to £3,600 gross into a pension (costing £2,880) so very attractive rates for now, but these will reduce with the new rates of income tax to be applied from April 6th 2026.

Stampeded (Do You Have Time to Read This?)

New rules were announced at the Autumn Statement, which had some investors anxious over changes to Cash ISAs. It transpires that many changes don’t actually start until 12 months later, in April 2027. (It soon comes around though). For Tax Year 2026/27 there are no significant changes to Pension and ISA Allowances, but there are changes from April 6th 2027. The Cash ISA limit will be reduced to £12,000 from April 2027 for those below 65 years old (no change above 65). It will not have any impact on savings if you’ve already contributed to a Cash ISA up until this point. The rules on maximum contributions if you turn 65 partway through a tax year will be determined in 2026 following an industry consultation, but as I write this, have not been confirmed yet. A Cash ISA is simply a savings account where you never pay tax on the interest you earn. Currently, you are able to contribute up to £20,000 each tax year into a Cash ISA (or you can split this allowance between other types of ISA, such as a Stocks & Shares ISA). The Government hopes the change – the first cut to the Cash ISA allowance since 2017 – will encourage more people to invest in stocks and shares instead. There’s no change to the annual £20,000 contribution limit for Stocks & Shares ISAs. A very subtle change is you will no longer be able to transfer money from Stocks & Shares ISAs and

Employers can actually make contributions of up to £60k for employees, despite their earnings potentially being much less, if the tax man can see the employer is making a fair contribution based on the employee’s endeavours for the employer. The contribution must be seen as part of their overall remuneration, and must also pass a “wholly and exclusive test”. This is a means of justifying the employer paying higher contributions. Last, but not least, the employer can make contributions of over £60k for the employee by using unused pensions annual allowances from up to 3 previous tax years. So, in some cases, a contribution of up to £220k for the employee in some circumstances, or even a higher earning employee could do similar themselves too. First steps Approach your pet carefully, as pain or fear may cause them to lash out. Wounds If the wound only has surface bleeding, just clean it with tepid water. If there is significant blood, apply pressure with a clean dressing. If it’s the former, they’ll be struggling to breathe, so you need to open their mouth to see anything that’s stuck. You could even create your own comfy little nest with cushions and throws. Adding a dog or cat to the mix is optional but strongly advised. And if you’re in the mood to share the comfort, call a friend, send a thoughtful note, or give someone a small cosy treat. You could even read that book you’ve been meaning to start, finish that knitting project, or invite family and friends over to join your comfy chill-out party. Honestly, who wants to be uncomfortable, anyway?

Just a Thought...

Should You, Could You, Wood You? As the seasons progress and we are able to access the great outdoors with a slightly reduced chance of being soaked to the skin or blown sideways by a gale, my mind turns to our wonderful woodlands. A friend of mine recommended something that immediately piqued my interest – Forest Bathing. Now, I’ll be honest, at first, I had visions of Victorian-esque ladies in frilly bathing suits strewn forlornly across the forest floor – but once I had moved past my initial amusement I started to soak in the idea and muse on the benefits of this rather marvellous practice. Originating in Japan, the idea is to immerse yourself in the woodland environment and slowly take in all the surroundings, paying particular attention to the 5 senses. The sounds of the wildlife, the feel of the leafy carpet beneath your feet, the sight of the colours, the smell of petrichor and the taste of freedom perhaps. It sounds deeply relaxing and engaging but led me to

wonder what the practical benefits of such an activity could be. Well, it turns out they are plentiful and varied – from lower blood pressure and a reduction in the stress hormone cortisol, to a strengthened immune system and higher quality sleep – it seems there is something positive for anybody willing to participate. I also love the accessibility element of forest bathing: no specialist equipment or high-tech gadgets required. Just you, the forest and some spare time (which we ALL need to get better at carving out – self care is not a luxury but essential, folks!) So, I am throwing down the proverbial gauntlet, my friends, and wondering if, as we step into spring, you will give this one a try? Should you? Absolutely. Could you? Why, yes, I think so. Would you? That is something only you can answer, but I hope the answer is a resounding… YES, I WOOD!

Travel: Along for the Ride From mountains and woodland to over 19,000 miles of dramatic coastline, the UK is packed with scenery that’s best explored on two wheels. Here are five of the best cycling destinations this country has to offer.

Cornwall

With undulating hills and spectacular coastal scenery, Cornwall is a cyclist’s dream. Some of the best routes are the steep climbs between beautiful villages, including the Cornish Way. Running from Land’s End to Bude, this route forms part of the National Cycle Network and is best tackled over four or five days. For a more relaxing holiday, consider the Camel Trail. Spanning 18 miles between Padstow and Bodmin, this traffic-free trail cuts through woodland as it follows an old railway line beside the River Camel.

The Yorkshire Dales: Yorkshire, Cumbria and Lancashire

Boasting limestone cliffs and sweeping valleys, the Yorkshire Dales rose to cycling fame during the 2014 Tour de France Grand Départ. Pedal down country lanes, drinking in the ancient landscape, and look out for glimpses of the Dales’ Roman remains. Intermediate cyclists will enjoy the Settle to Malham Cove loop in North Yorkshire, which carves through rolling countryside and includes a climb up to Malham Tarn. For a greater challenge, the Park Rash climb beckons; it’s one of the steepest routes in England.

The New Forest: Hampshire and Wiltshire

As one of the UK’s smallest national parks, the New Forest is the perfect size for exploring on two wheels. Criss-crossed with a mixture of undulating gravel

tracks and long flat stretches of road, it’s ideal for a family day out. Look out for free-roaming ponies and stop for a pub lunch in one of the picturesque villages. Beginning at Round Hill Campsite between Brockenhurst and Beaulieu, the traffic-free Hawkhill Trail is a great option for chilled days out. The Rhinefield Ornamental Woodland Ride will take you past some of the forest’s tallest trees.

Snowdonia, Wales

Eryri National Park is a beautiful blend of celtic culture, mountain scenery and rugged coastline. The star attraction is Mount Snowdon, the highest mountain in England and Wales. Winter Olympics: The Coolest Games Showcasing some of the most exhilarating and challenging winter sports, the Winter Olympics have been bringing together athletes from across the globe for a century. Ever since the first Olympic Winter Games were held in 1924 in Chamonix in the French Alps, the Winter Olympics have continued to evolve, embracing new sports and technological innovations. The ‘International Winter Sports Week’, initially an integral part of the Olympic Games in Paris, hosted 258 athletes from 16 nations, competing in 16 events across nine disciplines. Today it is a global spectacle, encompassing 116 medal events across 16 disciplines.

While some host countries have faced criticism over costs and environmental impact, the Games often leave a legacy of improved sports facilities and tourism.

Beer: Low Alcohol Beer

tingle keeps it snappy, landing somewhere between dry hopped sour and ultra refreshing table beer. The Kernel – Table Beer is brewed to deliver real character, depth, and balance at around 3%. As routines settle back in, low alcohol beer offers a sustainable, flavour driven middle ground, an invitation to drink a little lighter, think a little clearer, and savour the moment without missing out on flavour. Word on Wine: Port Following on from the last issue, where we looked at the history of Port, we’re now going to take a look at some of the varieties that are available and how they differ. Port is a very enjoyable drink at any time of year, but its rich, sweet profile makes it a great ‘winter warmer’ to enjoy by a roaring fire. Ruby is the simplest and cheapest Port. It is produced in bulk and aged for 2 or 3 years before bottling, using pasteurisation to also help stop the fermentation. Premium Ruby has a redder colour than Ruby and is often bottled as Reserve. Tawny is kept in oak barrels for a longer period, which reduces the red colour and adds tannins from the barrels, giving the slightly browner colour. Tawny Port can, however, come in a variety of colours with white wine being added if it gets too dark.

The wine will be from a single year and bottled after 2 or 3 years. However, it is then stored for up to 30 years and becomes the ‘Flagship’ of some merchants. Single Quinta Vintage is wine from a single vineyard and is aged for 4 to 6 years before bottling. LBV (Late Bottle Vintage) is wine from a single year, bottled after 4 to 6 years, then kept for 3 to 6 years before drinking. White Port is created using up to 30 different grape varieties with a shorter fermentation time of 18 months. It is kept in concrete or stainless-steel tanks, so as not to colour the wine.

Aged Tawny has been aged in oak barrels for over 6 years, again with ‘Reserve’ being put on labels if it has been aged for more than 7 years. Recipe

Courgette and Feta Fritters with Yoghurt Dip Enjoy these deliciously crunchy fritters as finger food or part of a meal, in a lunchbox or a burger bun. Makes: 6-8 (depending on size) Preparation time: 20-25 minutes (plus 30-60 minutes draining) Cooking time: 10-15 minutes Ingredients: • 3 medium courgettes, trimmed • Sea salt flakes • 4 spring onions, trimmed and finely chopped • 150g feta cheese, crumbled • A small handful of fresh dill, chopped • A small handful of fresh flat-leaf parsley, chopped • A good grating of nutmeg • 1 tsp ground coriander • 2 eggs, beaten • 100g self-raising flour • Finely grated zest of 1 lemon • Freshly ground black pepper • Borderfields Gold Cold-Pressed Rapeseed Oil, for frying For the yoghurt dip • ½ cucumber, seeds scraped out • 200ml Greek yoghurt • 1 clove garlic, crushed • A small handful of fresh mint leaves, chopped Method

Coarsely grate the courgettes into a colander, toss with a little sea salt and leave to drain for 30 minutes to an hour. Squeeze thoroughly and transfer to a large mixing bowl. Add the spring onions, feta, dill, parsley, nutmeg, coriander, eggs, flour and lemon zest. Season generously and mix well together. To make the yoghurt dip, coarsely grate the cucumber into a colander, sprinkle with a pinch of salt and squeeze out all the liquid.

Tip into a bowl with the yoghurt, garlic and mint and mix well. Chill in the fridge until ready to serve. Add a generous amount of the oil in a frying pan and place over a medium heat. When the pan is hot, add spoonfuls (about 1 tbsp at a time) of the fritter mix to the pan and flatten down slightly. Cook for 3 minutes on either side until golden brown. Remove the fritters with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper while you cook the remaining mixture. Serve immediately with the yoghurt mix on the side. “I shouldn’t lift heavy weights.” To build muscle and bone strength, you need to challenge your body. Lifting a weight that feels difficult by the final few reps is safe and effective when done with proper form. Light weights have their place, but heavier resistance brings the biggest benefits.

Strong Women – Busting Myths Around Strength Training

Following on from last issue’s article on the benefits of strength training for women, we’re going to address some common fears and myths … and look at the truth behind them! “I’ll get bulky or too muscular.” Women have much lower testosterone than men, which limits how much muscle they can build. Weight training creates lean, toned muscle – not bulk. Bulky physiques come from specialised, high-calorie training, not general strength work. “It’s dangerous; I’ll injure myself.” Any activity has risk, but with good instruction, correct form, and gradual progression, weight training is very safe. Strong muscles actually protect joints and reduce injury risk. “I don’t have time.” You don’t need hours in the gym. Short, focused sessions – two or three times a week – can produce real results. Consistency matters more than duration. “I’m too old.” It’s never too late. Women of any age can gain strength, improve balance, and protect bone health. Many women see dramatic improvements in energy and confidence even when starting in their 50s, 60s or beyond.

How to Get Started Safely and Confidently • Start with light weights or bodyweight and focus on form. • Learn key movements such as squats, deadlifts, and presses – ideally with a trainer or coach. • Progress gradually by adding weight over time. • Allow recovery days; muscles grow and strengthen during rest. • Use what you have – bands, dumbbells, kettlebells, or machines. You don’t need fancy equipment. • Track progress in strength, not just appearance. • Find a supportive gym, class, or community where you feel comfortable and encouraged. The reasons many women avoid lifting weights – fear of bulking up, getting injured, or being too old – are understandable but unfounded. The benefits of strength training are profound: stronger bones, better metabolism, improved mood, reduced disease risk, and greater confidence. Lifting weights isn’t about becoming masculine – it’s about becoming powerful, capable, and resilient. Derbyshire Walking: Rowsley Circular Walk

Start/Finish: trentbarton Sixes bus stop opposite the Peacock Hotel, Rowsley (DE4 2EB, ///diamond.deliver.overhead). Parking is also available nearby. Distance: 3.8 miles/6.1 km. Difficulty: Easy Starting and ending at the trentbarton Sixes bus stop in the village of Rowsley, this is a beautiful walk that takes in stunning countryside and far-reaching views, all in less than 4 miles. The walk takes you through the little hamlet of Stanton Woodhouse, before walking on field paths offering wonderful views towards Matlock. You’ll return on quiet country lanes through the hamlets of Pilhough and Congreave, with views of Haddon Hall, before dropping down on field paths back into Rowsley, past the mysterious tree-topped hill of Peak Tor. Directions

1. Start on School Lane, directly opposite the bus stop outside the Peacock Hotel. Walk along School Lane, passing the primary school on your left. Where the lane bears right immediately after crossing the bridge over the River Wye, continue straight on along the private road lined with high hedges. Follow this private road, ignoring tracks and paths off. After approx. 1.25 km look out for a footpath sign on the right and follow the field path that leads through a metal kissing gate.

2. Head straight on uphill walking alongside the hedge until you reach a wide wooden gate on your left after approx. 25-30 metres. Go through the gate and carry straight on to rejoin the private road that you were walking on before. Continue straight on to reach the little hamlet of Stanton Woodhouse.

3. As the road curves to the right just beyond the

buildings, continue straight on across the grass. Go through a wide metal gate and take the field path that is obvious straight ahead of you between the trees.

4. Follow this curving field path as it leads gently uphill

and bears right. Continue following the clear path through a pair of stone gate posts and a small metal hand gate. At an obvious fork in the path you can go either left or right, although the path on the right is usually clearer and easier to negotiate. Either way brings you out onto the same quiet country lane. Turn right on the lane.

5. Continue on this lane for approx. 1.5 km. At a

junction of lanes stay straight on and follow the signs to Pilhough and Congreave, ignoring the road on the left signposted to Stanton in Peak. Pilhough is a small collection of farms and cottages clustered around a crossroads. Go straight on when you reach the crossroads, taking the very narrow lane signposted to Congreave. The lane twists down for a further 750 metres to the little hamlet. When you reach Congreave, look out for a footpath on your right, directly opposite a house called Dovehouse Farm, before Congreave Farm. Leave the lane and turn right, following the path past the side of barns and through a wide wooden gate with a stone squeeze stile beside.

6. Walk straight on through the gate and stay to the

top of the field, picking up a clear path that bears right and leads downhill towards a small wood. Go through two small wooden hand gates with a stream between, follow the curving path for approx. 10-15 metres then pass through a small wooden gate in a stone wall, emerging into a wide field. Head slightly diagonally right and follow the clear path ahead, with Rowsley village visible ahead of you beyond the river.

7. The path bears right between trees and heads

gently downhill to reach a wide metal gate with a small wooden hand gate beside. Go through the gate and turn left on the lane. Follow this quiet lane for approx. 500 metres back into Rowsley village and your start point on School Lane. Short Story Doing Our Bit for the Planet “Looks like everyone’s had the same idea.” Sandra took a swig from her can of pop and drew a sad face on the steamed-up passenger window. “Not how I wanted to spend my Saturday.” They’d been sat in a queue of traffic outside the recycling centre for what seemed like hours, watching as car after car unloaded their discarded Christmas trees. “Look lively, we’re up next,” Terry said, turning his engine back on as the car in front of them was waved through by a man in a high-vis jacket. “We’ll unload the tree and get out of here.” Terry released the handbrake to edge forward but the man held up his hand for them to stop. “What is it now?” Terry said testily, winding down his window. “Sorry, mate.” The man leaned on the car door. “We’ve reached capacity.” “What’s that supposed to mean?” Terry said. “I’m only allowed to let fifty cars through today.” He shrugged. “And you’re fifty-one.”

“What’s the world coming to?” Terry squared up to him. “Not two weeks ago it was the season of goodwill, and now it’s back to enforcing petty rules.” The man hung his head. “How would you feel about having to drive round with this thing in your car all week? Only to come back next weekend and go through this whole charade again? Can’t you show a little flexibility?” Terry continued, sensing that he had this chap on a hook. “You know it’s the decent thing.” He heard a voice from a car behind him shout “Hear, Hear!” and knew he was winning. “Alright,” the man nodded. “I can’t let you drive in but give me what you’ve got and I’ll take it in for you.”

“We’ve been sat here twenty minutes,” Terry protested. “You’ve been stood not two yards away, surely you could have told me that when I pulled up?”

“Sir, I knew you were a decent chap.” Terry slapped him on the shoulder. Several cars beeped in support. “I hope you’re feeling strong because it’s a big one.”

“Should have read the sign.” The man pointed to an unreadable laminated sheet tied to the gate. Terry gripped the steering wheel; he felt that if anyone looked at him right now they’d see steam coming out of his ears.

Sandra shuffled next to him, still gripping her empty pop can. Terry popped open the car boot.

“I’m not having this,” he said through gritted teeth, opening his car door. “Come on Sandra, we’re getting out.”

“Where’s the ruddy tree Sandra?” Terry whispered through clenched teeth. “I asked you to put it in the boot.” “Did you?” Sandra shrugged. “I thought you were doing it.” “What exactly did you want me to take?” The man scratched his head.

“I suggest you get back in your car, mate.” The man held up his hands. “And come back another day.” “Firstly, I’m not your mate,” Terry said. “Secondly, we’ve queued here in good faith, and thirdly, you are taking our recycling today.” Drivers in the queue behind them began to take interest in the proceedings. Some wound down their windows, others began to beep their horns in support. “I’ve got to lock the gates,” the man said weakly. “It’s more than my job’s worth to let you in.”

Gardening: Go Wild in the Garden Gardens in the UK extend to an estimated 520,000 hectares (around 2,007 square miles, or 5,198 square kilometres). This is a huge area for a small nation and even a courtyard or small garden can make a big difference to wildlife, biodiversity and ecology. Winter in the UK is a great time to work out how your own garden can contribute to the bigger picture. Every small step you take to improve your patch truly makes an impact. Six-point plan This simple plan will help improve biodiversity and have a positive effect on the landscape around you: 1. Plant as many different species of shrubs, trees, perennials and even fruit and vegetables, as you can. A wide range of plants is better for wildlife (provided you avoid invasive species). 2. Choose plants that provide flowers, fruit and seed at different times. This gives wildlife a chance to find food throughout different seasons. 3. Add some cover and habitats. Just a pile of sticks, a small pond, a hedge or a collection of leaves are valuable. 4. If you have a vegetable garden, use the same principles and plant as wide a range as you can fit in. 5. Make a compost heap and use it.

6. Stop using any form of pesticide and use natural fertilisers rather than artificial. A draw for dormice Some wildlife is particularly precious, and there are certain ‘umbrella species’ that show a good standard of habitat and biodiversity. One of these is the dormouse. These small creatures are fully protected by law and termed a Biodiversity Action Plan species. They have suffered an intense decline of up to 70% over the last 25 years. You need to have a licence to disturb or handle these rodents, so keeping a good distance away is essential. In February, dormice should be hibernating. Can you help them within your own garden? It depends on where you live and the appropriateness of your setting. Dormice should be located away from predators, such as the family cat! They need direct access to appropriate wildlife corridors, which enable them to forage for food throughout different seasons. Help for hedgehogs Hedgehogs also need protection from household pets, in particular, dogs. The best things you can provide for these prickly characters are spaces under or through fences. These act as ‘hedgehog highways’, so they can travel between gardens. Shelter and water are important too. A log pile is valuable for food and protection, as these creatures eat invertebrates as well as worms and fruit. While dormice often favour the base of hedges for hibernation, hedgehogs like log piles, compost heaps, dark places under sheds and dense bushes.

The Diary of a Local Mum

How Smart Are Phones, Really? There’s been a lot in the media recently regarding Australia’s ban on social media accounts for under-16s. This controversial decision has been met with strong, and mixed, reactions from all over the world. Everyone has an opinion on this … not least the social media companies themselves, one of which has launched a High Court challenge against the decision. Whether you think the age-related ban is wrong or right, and whether you think social media is a blessing or a curse for young people, one thing is for sure … it’s become a huge part of global society and it’s unlikely to be going anywhere any time soon. The problem is the apparent correlation between the rise in social media and a simultaneous international decline in young people’s mental health. Some argue that the two aren’t actually related, and it’s difficult to prove unequivocally, but it is, nevertheless, a very strong coincidence. So, what should we be doing about the devices that our young people are glued to? How do we safeguard what they’re doing when the whole world is in their pocket? Is this overwhelming access to everything, at all times, too much for a young brain to handle? I would say, undoubtedly, yes! As a parent, it’s so difficult to know what to do when it comes to social media, and moreover, smart phone use in general. Mobile phones have become such an integral part of daily life that we can’t function without them – kids and adults alike. It’s reassuring to know that our kids can always contact us when they need us, and we can contact them (when they answer!). But, of course, smart phones also enable kids to be contacted and traced by anyone else with the correct access, too. And that’s scary. Many of us parents were brought up in much ‘simpler’ times – technologically at least – when risks were very different, so it can be hard to get your head around exactly what perils these devices carry,

from social media access through to tracking functionality. Let’s face it, they’re the most common devices in the world! You wouldn’t give your kids something widely considered to be ‘dangerous’, would you?! But paradoxically, the device we give them to help keep them safe is also associated with some of the greatest dangers that young people face today. Are the risks outweighed by the benefits? Or have we opened a Pandora’s Box and handed it willingly to our kids? The social media companies are unlikely to step up with realistic measures to protect our young people, because, let’s face it, they’re there to make money. Likewise, the manufacturers of smart phones are focused on sales over safety. Governments are slow to move and sweeping in their judgements. So, it’s up to us individually to parent as we see fit. Whatever we do, and whatever decisions we make around smart phone and social media use, as parents we know that any limitations are likely to be met by resistance from kids. Cries of ‘That’s not fair’ or ‘So and so’s parents let them’ can be heard the world over, but it’s important to stick to your guns. Do your research, look at parental controls designed to help you regulate and enforce limitations, and go with your gut. It’ll mostly come down to clear boundaries and open, honest communication. Be transparent about what you’re enforcing and why, to help your child understand it’s for their own benefit. What’s right for one family or child might not be right for another … you know your child better than anyone, so do whatever you think is best. Of course, they’ll always question our judgement and call out any perceived hypocrisy, but leading by example is easier said than done when so much of our life is encapsulated in that small, addictive device. But is there another way? Should we all be stepping away from our not-so-smart phones for a happier, healthier, more peaceful life? It’s food for thought.

Local History

Belper People of the Past John Shorthose and Gooseberries John Shorthose was landlord of The New Inn, a public house and hotel now the home of Colledges furniture shop. Newspapers tell us that he was a Freemason and also a champion gardener, especially keen on growing gooseberries. Born in the last few years of the 18th century, John was at The New Inn in 1825. His tenure lasted until about 1850, when the pub was put up for sale. The sales advertisement claimed it to be “the market-house of the town for the past 50 years”, so it seems that he had done a good job. It was a busy hotel, catering for coach travellers with extensive accommodation for large parties and diners as well as the usual business of a town-centre public house. Gooseberries were a common food, easy to grow and delicious, known for high vitamin C content, a cure for scurvy but not grown commercially until later in the century. However, gooseberries became popular with amateur gardeners, encouraged by the rise of gooseberry societies and clubs. Belper’s Gooseberry Society is mentioned in newspapers as early as 1838 when members met to show their best red, yellow, green and white varieties. Here in Belper shows were held in The Upper Swan (later The White Swan), The Lord Nelson and, not surprisingly, The New Inn. Prizes were awarded for the best-looking and heaviest specimens and weighing was an important part of the event. In 1838 Shorthose’s prize-winners were Maiden Prize and Wonderful; other winning names were Thumper, Snowball, Magnet and Touchstone, By 1871 there were more than 100 different varieties.

Weighing a Gooseberry

the annual horticultural show for his cucumbers and carnations and the following year took awards for dahlias and gooseberries. It is most likely that he maintained a garden, gone now, but shown on old maps, behind The New Inn and he also rented a small garden nearby in 1845. John entered fruit and vegetables in Belper’s annual horticultural show and his name pops up winning prizes for dahlias, potatoes, carrots and celery at Ripley’s show. Perhaps the secret of his success lay in the pub’s stabling for 27 horses, supplying him with quantities of manure! At a meeting of the Belper Gooseberry Club at The Upper Swan in 1852 prizes included eight new tea kettles. After the weighing was over, members “sat down to a sumptuous dinner, provided by the worthy host and hostess…. Jedediah and John Strutt Esq with several of the principal inhabitants have liberally contributed to the funds of the club and we hope that others will follow their example.” It is hard to follow John Shorthose’s life after retirement. He was married with a son and daughters but little more is known about him, apart from a newspaper announcement of his death in 1854 at the age of about 58. However, we can leave him with the accolade of gooseberry champion of the Market Place.

An article in 1832 from the Board of Health advised “to assist in preventing attacks of cholera, gooseberry puddings and tarts are better avoided”, together with “cooked vegetables, salads, cucumber and radishes”. Probably some of these were dangerous because of water-borne bacteria, but it’s puzzling why cooked gooseberries were included in this list. However, it didn’t deter local gardeners from a very popular hobby. In 1835 John Shorthose won prizes at

A traditional part of this process used to be compiling a Top 10 of the music we were asked to play at our funerals – from My Way to Amazing Grace – to see how tastes have changed. For many years, things largely stayed the same, but no longer: music choices have become so diverse that there are no real stand-out favourites anymore, just a huge variety spanning different eras and genres. We’ve stopped compiling our list because it doesn’t tell us anything, except that funeral music choices are now as individual as the people we are helping to lay to rest. Anything goes, whether it’s 1970s rock, a show tune or a 2000s pop singalong. Increasingly, families are choosing to be daring, requesting a song to reflect their relative’s wicked sense of humour, such as – and I’m not joking here – Firestarter by the Prodigy. It truly is each to their own, and a total contrast to when I started out in the industry, when many funerals were conducted at church, in a very traditional way, so

hymns were the order of the day. Over the years, popular tunes started to creep in, with a mixture of religious favourites and secular hits. Now, we have fewer requests for hymns and instead hear personal songs that meant something at a special time in the person’s life – their favourite tune when they were young, or perhaps their wedding song. I love hearing these diverse songs, because I love music and it helps me to imagine the kind of person they were. And, since most people have fond memories of their youth, new patterns are emerging. These days we’re hearing a lot of Elvis, The Beatles, and the Hollies songs played – the music they enjoyed when they were growing up in the 1950s and 60s. Doubtless in the next few years, we’ll be listening to 1970s Queen or maybe some disco and then it will be on to the 1980s – bringing more eclectic tastes in music to the fore, and truly reflecting the life of the person everyone has gathered together to say goodbye to.
