WELCOME LETTER
Hello readers
Welcome to the Christmas and New Year bumper issue! Another year has flown by, and we prepare to bid farewell to 2026 and welcome in 2027. It will be a special year for All Things Local, as 2027 marks our 20th anniversary! As ever, a HUGE thank you goes out to everyone who’s supported us over two amazing decades… we’ll have much more to say on that when we mark our ‘official’ anniversary date in the spring. But, before then, there’s the festive season to enjoy and, however you like to celebrate, there’s a plethora of choice locally – from visiting the big man himself at one of his local grottos, to eating, drinking and being merry in the wonderful local pubs, restaurants and cafes that we’re lucky to have on our doorstep. We hope you enjoy the festivities to their fullest! From carols around the tree, to stirring the Christmas pudding, playing board games with the family and burning off the over-consumption with a Boxing Day walk, Christmas is all about traditions, old and new. Everyone has a unique way of celebrating and their own form of festive frivolities! While it’s good to keep your favourite traditions going, it can also be fun to incorporate something new, so why not ask friends and family for suggestions and add a new ‘tradition’ to your list this year? You might just discover a new favourite! Of course, we’ll be doing what we can to help your celebrations along … with the chance to win a breakfast/brunch for 2 at Morley Hayes in our Crossword Competition, or a bottle of Champagne with our Champagne Sudoku. Turn to pages 6 and 21 to have a go – you never know, you could be one of our lucky winners enjoying an early Christmas present!
Remember to get your entries in by 8th December to be in the draw. And, don’t forget, whatever ‘newness’ you may be looking for in the New Year – from home improvements and renovations, to garden transformations, getting your finances in check or even getting yourself fit and active – there’s a local expert who can help. Browse through our pages to find local businesses who are ready and waiting to help you tackle whatever it is you want to change or improve in 2027. Talking of ‘newness’ you’ll find a few new articles in this edition (as well as many of the old favourites, too!) so we hope you will enjoy reading our latest issue. We’ll be back in 2027 with our February/ March issue but, until then, we wish you all a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR! All the best, Team ATL

Legal Matters: What’s Mine is Mine?
Maybe you focused on building your career and setting yourself up for life. Maybe you have been there, done that, had a messy divorce and you have built your finances back up again. Maybe you have been financially fortunate. You then meet someone you see a future with and THE question is asked. Love is in the air and plans for the wedding are being made. You start to wonder, though, what happens if it doesn’t work out? After all, according to the Office for National Statistics, approximately 42% of marriages in England and Wales are projected to end in a divorce. Can you protect what you have worked hard for or been fortunate enough to acquire? It’s not a romantic thought and it can be a hard topic to raise. But marriage itself is a contract which you should both be going into with your eyes wide open. In the above circumstances, you should strongly consider entering into a pre-nuptial agreement. Now from the outset it is important to note that these agreements are not currently formally binding in England and Wales, but they have been regarded by the Courts as persuasive and sometimes decisive in resolving financial matters on divorce. The Supreme Court decision in Radmacher (formerly Granatino) v Granatino [2010] UKSC 42 provides that significant weight may be given to a pre-nuptial agreement depending on the circumstances of the case. So, what are the dos and don’ts for pre-nuptial agreements? The first step in our view is to seek legal advice and in good time. According to www.hitched.co.uk it takes the average UK couple 1 to 2 years to plan a wedding. If you are
8
thinking about getting a pre-nuptial agreement, then don’t produce one to be signed hours or days before the wedding. The takeaways from the Radmacher decision are that both parties must enter the agreement of their own free will, without undue influence or pressure, and be informed of its implications. In addition, each party should have all the information that is material to their decision, and they must each intend that the agreement should govern the financial consequences of the marriage ending in divorce. A pre-nuptial agreement should be reviewed during the course of the marriage because circumstances will likely change. For example, having children, illnesses, redundancy and other significant life events. If the pre-nuptial agreement becomes outdated or leads to outcomes you did not intend by the time you try to rely on it, then the court may depart from it. When considering a pre-nuptial agreement, the Court will look at whether there are any circumstances which should eliminate or reduce the weight to be attached to the agreement – for example duress, fraud, etc. The Court will also look at whether implementing the agreement would not be fair in all the circumstances of the case. I have often heard pre-nuptial agreements described as being like a raincoat with holes in it. You won’t be completely dry, but you won’t be as wet as you would be without one! Everyone’s relationship with risk is different. A good adviser will assess both a client’s financial capacity for loss and their emotional tolerance for market volatility. Some investors are thoughtful and philosophical, while others become anxious when values fall. An adviser recognises that investor experience plays a part too. However, a new investor may find their first market fall unsettling despite it being an inevitable characteristic of investing. CAN You Imagine Life Without Them? When you need something quick to eat, it’s easy to grab a tin of soup or a can of beans from the cupboard. On January the 19th, Tin Can Day celebrates the invention that transformed how we preserve, store and eat food. The story began in the early 19th century, when keeping food fresh for long periods was a serious challenge. French inventor Nicolas Appert developed a way to preserve food by sealing it in containers and heating it. His work paved the way for later developments in food preservation, including metal cans. In 1810, British merchant Peter Durand patented a method of preserving food in tin-coated iron containers. But it wasn’t until January the 19th 1825 that American inventors Ezra Daggett and Thomas Kensett received a US patent for preserving food in tin cans. Even then it took another 33 years for a dedicated can opener to be patented. Before that, opening a tin meant reaching for a hammer and chisel! Imagine fancying beans on toast for tea but having to fetch the toolbox first.
Modern cans are lighter, easier to open, and designed to keep food usable for months (or even years) when stored correctly. But despite the name, most food tins aren’t made entirely of tin. They’re generally made from steel with a thin tin coating, while aluminium is also widely used for food and drink cans. It’s hard to imagine life without them. They’re convenient, often budget-friendly, and perfect for stew season. Chuck some veg, a tin of beans or lentils, and whatever else takes your fancy into the slow cooker and wha-bam! You’ve got a hearty meal to warm the cockles. And their usefulness doesn’t end when they’re empty. Steel and aluminium cans can be recycled into new products, while clean, empty tins can even be repurposed as plant pots or pen holders if you’re feeling crafty. So, how could you celebrate Tin Can Day? Whip up a meal using ingredients from your cupboards, try a recipe you’ve never cooked before, or donate some in-date cans to Belper’s food bank. It’s a simple way to mark an invention that’s shaped our lives for more than two centuries.

Just a Thought...
So, (stay with me folks) if we are all made up of the dust of the universe that exploded in the Big Bang and if this energetic dust is constantly transferring its energy, then, in reality, the dust will NEVER settle.
I have often said, as I am sure many of you also have, that I will see how things are ‘when the dust settles.’
Perhaps then, there are occasions where a quick decision could be made, or a heart-over-head choice could be followed with carefree abandon. I am not advocating for flying by the seat of your pants (metaphorically) all the time, because life does require moments of reflection and careful contemplation. I will say this though, when my next house cleaning spree comes around, I have an excellent excuse not to dust – it could be someone I used to know!
When the Dust Settles
Of course, this is a metaphor for assessing a situation and deciding on what action to take when the frenzy of circumstance has calmed down. It is a pragmatic approach to making clear decisions and not acting in haste. But then I had a thought – so dangerous when that happens! Assuming science has it correct, all the energy that exists in the universe today has existed since the Big Bang. Science also professes that energy cannot be created or destroyed, just changed or transferred. For starters, what a wonderful recycling mechanism the universe is but, secondly, it stands to reason then that all of us as humans are just intricate particle patterns of energy molecules – or universe dust!
Go ahead and make some bold moves in the months ahead… and don’t you dare settle for anything less.

Lifestyle
Living the Midlife Getting Moving… We all know how good exercise is for us, and moving more is important … isn’t it? But should we be a bit more careful now that things are starting to creak a bit? Is there a right way and a wrong way to exercise in middle age? That might sound like a silly question. Surely all movement is good movement, right? Getting up off the sofa and moving – whether it’s in a formal exercise-based setting (like a gym, or an aerobics class) or just jigging around your kitchen a bit, doing some YouTube yoga, or time-travelling back to your school days by skipping on the patio – is positive. Moving your backside rather than sitting on it can make you feel better both mentally and physically. But … (yep, you knew there was a ‘but’ coming, didn’t you!) as with everything in life – especially midlife – you can overthink it, and you can certainly over-research it. Assisted by help you never knew you wanted from the self-professed ‘experts’ in your phone, you can tie yourself in knots – and that’s before you’ve even started with any yoga! You start off thinking positively: “Right, I’m going to embark on a new exercise regime! I know, I’ll do Couch to 5k, that’s a great place to start and loads of people run. It’ll be good for me!” You search ‘Couch to 5k’ but, before you’ve had chance to click through to Week 1, the good ol’ algorithm steps in and articles begin to pop up, from the slightly negative ‘Why you shouldn’t run after 40’, to the more aggressive ‘Why running is the WORST way for women over 40 to get fit!’ “Eh?!” You think. “I thought running would be a GOOD thing?!” The next articles that pop up suggest walking is a better way to get fit. “Oh, ok!” you think, “Well, that’s easier, but I walk the dog anyway and I was hoping for something a little more strenuous.”
“Wow, ok. 20 minutes? At home? And it saves the gym fees? Sounds ideal.” You’re googling the cost of dumbbells when, all of a sudden, a new pop-up appears: ‘I was hospitalised for 3-MONTHS after a home-workout accident!’ “Crikey, that sounds terrifying! Maybe that’s not the way to go.” But wait, what’s this… ‘How [insert name of ‘famous’ influencer you’ve never heard of] got fit, lost 2-stones, and rediscovered her joie de vivre by dancing herself fit with BOPFIT! Click here to subscribe and CHANGE YOUR LIFE FOR THE BETTER!’ “Hmm, Bopfit, that could be a goer. I’ll just click through for more information … HOW MUCH?!? Erm, no thanks. Couch to 5k was free! Maybe I’ll just stick with that.” But, by now, an hour has passed and your window of opportunity for exercising has almost closed. So, you stand up, run on the spot a bit, then crack on with your day feeling more underwhelmed than reinvigorated … and then, another pop up on your phone tells you ‘All movement is good movement in middle-age! Don’t sit and scroll, just turn off your phone, get up and move your body!’ Hmm, yeah, thanks for the great advice.
Not to worry – the algorithm has more advice: ‘Why weightlifting is the RIGHT way to get fit in middle age’ “Fine. Well, I’ll join a gym then.” But no, before you do that: ‘Don’t waste money on gym fees! This easy 20-minute home dumbbell workout is ALL YOU NEED to get shredded in midlife!’

Lifestyle
Travel: Return Ticket Why revisiting the places we holidayed as children can inform your past as well as enriching your future. Some places remain with us long after we leave them. There’s the seaside walk in Great Yarmouth where we ate ice cream in the rain when we were 10; a caravan park in Swanage where friendships lasted precisely seven days; and a café our parents visited every morning when we stayed in the Yorkshire Dales that year. Childhood holidays have a curious habit of becoming part of our personal geography. Years later, we may remember surprisingly little about the journey, the accommodation or even what we did each day, yet certain details stay remarkably clear. Perhaps that is why returning to those locations can feel so powerful. Reliving the past through adult eyes – should we? The thing is, revisiting a childhood holiday destination is rarely quite as expected. The enormous swimming pool may appear considerably smaller, and the walk into town that once felt like an expedition takes 10 minutes. For some, going back, it feels as though the place is the same in one sense, though has irrecoverably moved on, in another.
Sharing memories Old photographs can add another dimension. Take a few with you, find the original locations and recreate one if the mood takes you - not in pursuit of the perfect social-media post, but simply to capture the passing of time. You may also find, while travelling with parents or siblings, that new stories come about – those that have not been told for years.
Don’t try to recreate everything The greatest mistake is expecting the holiday to feel exactly as it did before. People and places evolve, hotels are renovated, attractions disappear and family traditions change. Searching too hard for an identical experience can leave us disappointed by everything that is different, so instead it’s better to choose a handful of meaningful places to revisit. Of course, taking your own children to somewhere you visited at their age creates a link between generations, and this newness is important.
New memories Mostly though, holidays are there not to relive the past, but to create new memories. Sure, psychologists have long associated nostalgia with feelings of connection and continuity, but returning should still be about the present day. So, try the restaurant that did not exist before and explore the neighbouring town your family never visited. The most rewarding return trips often combine recognition with discovery. Nostalgia is a lovely thing – it allows us to see how much has changed, not only in the destination, but in our own lives, but it also provides a bridge for us to move on from the past and create new experiences.

Beer: Barley Wine Barley wine is one of the strongest styles of beer, with a history rooted in Britain’s tradition of brewing big, robust ales. Its modern identity took shape in the 18th and 19th centuries, with Bass No.1 becoming one of the best-known early examples. Despite the name, there’s no grape involved; the term reflects a beer with a strength traditionally associated with wine. These are beers built around rich malt flavours, often bringing notes of caramel, toffee, dried fruit and a warming alcohol character. American versions can introduce a more pronounced hop bitterness, but malt remains central to many interpretations. Part of barley wine’s appeal is the scope it gives brewers to experiment. Honey can be added to contribute its own flavour, while providing fermentable sugars that can help drive the alcohol content higher. Ageing in oak barrels can bring further layers, with vanilla, spice and sometimes flavours reminiscent of sherry or port developing over time. Not every barley wine needs years in a cellar though; some are enjoyable when fresh, while others reward patience as their flavours evolve.
Word on Wine: Spanish Tempranillo With Christmas round the corner, let’s look at a wine to go with the Christmas dinner while continuing the Spanish theme of the last article. Another grape variety from Spain that has travelled around the world is the ‘Monastrell’ grape. Grown in France as ‘Mourvèdre’ and in California and Australia as ‘Mataro’, it has its origins in the Murcia / Valencia region of Spain and is named after the town of Murviedro. However, the best examples of this wine are still made in Spain in the Jumilla region. Small, sweet, thick-skinned berries produce rich, fruit driven, easy drinking, high alcohol wine with fruit flavours, a smooth finish and light tannins. A good example is Parajes del Valle Monastrell Ecológico 2024, made in Jumilla, Murcia, and imported by The Modest Merchant. Parajes del Valle is a dynamic new winery established in 2018 by the young winemaker Maria Jover, working with organic certified 15 to 40-year-old vines from 4 plots in northern Jumilla. The vines are maintained in the traditional system where the farmers rent the land and receive part of the harvest for tending the vines. This system has helped retain some of the oldest vines (80 – 90 years old) in the region. The wine is started in stainless steel tanks before being transferred to concrete tanks to complete the

Barley wines are often held in particularly high regard by beer enthusiasts. Their strength, the care that goes into making them and their potential to develop with age give them a special place in the world of beer. They’re not usually beers to reach for when you want a quick, refreshing pint however, with many examples sitting around 8–12% ABV, and some exceeding that, barley wines are best served in small measures and savoured slowly. Recipe
Jamie Oliver’s Chilli Sausage Rolls You can’t beat a warm, flaky sausage roll, and with the mild chilli heat this is a heavenly warming treat – a spicy twist on a classic. Ingredients (serves 10): • 3-6 red chillies (depending on heat) • 500g higher-welfare pork sausage meat • ½ tsp smoked paprika • 500g puff pastry • 2 free-range egg yolks, beaten with a splash of milk • 1 tbsp whole cumin seeds Method
1
Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/gas 4. Pierce the chillies, then toast over a gas flame or under a hot grill until black and blistered. Place in a bowl, cover with clingfilm and leave to cool. When cool enough to handle, pull off and discard the skins, then scoop out the seeds – or leave in if you want fireworks!
2
Chop the chilli flesh and mix with the sausage, paprika and a pinch of black pepper. Sprinkle a work surface with flour. Cut the block of pastry in half and roll out into 2 strips, 50cm x 15cm each. Shape the sausage meat into 2 sausage shapes and place along the middle of each strip.
3 4 5
Beat the egg yolks with a splash of milk, then coat the pastry either side of the sausage with the egg mixture. Fold the pastry over and press down to seal. Brush the tops of the sausage rolls with the egg wash, sprinkle with cumin seeds and sea salt. Cut into 5cm lengths and place on a non-stick baking sheet. Bake for 20 minutes, until risen, puffed and golden brown.

Fashion & Beauty Winter Warmer
Five tips for choosing the perfect winter coat. John Motson, John Lennon, Diana Ross, Margot Tenenbaum, Joseph and his amazing technicolour number… the value of a good coat goes well beyond simple comfort. It’s a statement, an expression, a tactical, tacit nod to who we are and what we do. And yes, okay, it keeps us warm. Ultimately, however, as one of the hardest-working items in any wardrobe – after all, it will be worn for several months of the year, whether you’re heading to work, walking the dog or meeting friends for lunch – it pays to get it right. 1. Choose timeless over trendy Fashion trends come and go remarkably quickly, but a classic coat can look just as good five or even ten years from now, so choose with longevity in mind. A tailored wool coat or well-cut trench number can guide you through many seasons, many years. 2. Think carefully about fabric The material matters just as much as the design. Pure wool provides excellent insulation and tends to age beautifully, while those with durable blends can deliver similar at a lower price. Padded and quilted coats are ideal if warmth is your priority, particularly if you spend plenty of time outdoors.
Pay attention to the quality of the stitching, lining and fastenings. A well-made coat often reveals itself in the details. 3. Buy for your lifestyle, not someone else’s It’s easy to fall in love with a beautiful coat in a shop, but think about how you’ll actually use it. If most days involve school runs, commuting or long walks, practicality should probably come before high fashion. A coat that’s waterproof, comfortable and easy to move in may prove a far wiser purchase than one that’s destined to spend most of the winter hanging in the wardrobe. 4. Get the fit right A winter coat should feel comfortable over a chunky jumper without becoming oversized. Be realistic - if it already feels restrictive in the changing room, it certainly won’t improve once temperatures fall. 5. Stick with versatile colours Bold colours can be striking, and we’ve all stood there in a burst of ‘new image’ energy, ready to go out and impress our new selves on the world. Then you get home and realise it doesn’t really feel like you. Ultimately, neutral shades generally offer greater flexibility, so navy, camel, charcoal, black and deep olive work effortlessly with most wardrobes, and they won’t date as quickly as brighter seasonal shades. If you’d like to introduce colour, scarves, hats and gloves are a much easier (and less expensive!) way to do it.

Fitness Matters Stronger After 50: It’s Never Too Late to Get Stronger
Getting older doesn’t mean we have to accept becoming weaker; maintaining our strength becomes even more important as we age. The good news is that you can improve your strength at any age, even if you have never lifted a weight before. As we get older, we naturally start to lose muscle mass and strength. If we don’t do anything to challenge our muscles, this can gradually impact everyday activities such as getting out of a chair, climbing stairs, carrying shopping or even getting down to the floor and back up again. Strength training can help slow this process and keep you doing the things you enjoy – and it doesn’t have to mean going to the gym. Simple exercises using your own body weight, resistance bands or light dumbbells can be very effective. There are many benefits beyond simply becoming stronger. Improving your leg and core strength can help with balance and stability, while regular exercise can help maintain bone health and support good posture. By making everyday activities feel easier, training can improve confidence and encourage you to become more active. For many people,
the biggest improvement isn’t what they can lift in the gym – it’s what they can do outside the gym, such as carting shopping more easily, getting up more comfortably or walking without feeling tired. Even if you’ve never exercised before, don’t be put off if you’re starting from scratch. You don’t need to be fit before you start exercising. Start with just two or three short strength sessions a week, incorporating simple movements and focusing on technique, then build up from there. Exercises such as sit-to-stands, wall push-ups, step-ups, resistance-band exercises and light weights can all be adapted to suit different fitness levels. One of the biggest mistakes people make is thinking they have to do everything at once. You don’t! Even 10–20 minutes of exercise can be a great starting point. Your age isn’t a reason to stop getting stronger – it’s a reason to start. SMALL GROUP PERSONALISED TRAINING / PILATES SESSIONS
START WHERE YOU ARE.
SOUND FAMILIAR?
Perhaps you'd like to feel stronger and fitter, but you're not sure where to start. Or you've joined a gym before, only to find yourself left to get on with it. If the idea of a big, busy gym isn't for you, there's another way. The Base is an independent gym where coaching and community come first. WHAT WE DO ABOUT IT
Six people to one coach. Your programme is written for you and checked every session, so you'll always know what you're doing and have a coach there to help. As you get stronger and more confident, your training progresses with you, so you're always working at the right level. Pilates sessions are included too, complementing your training with a different focus on strength, movement and control. MORE THAN JUST TRAINING
From your first visit, we'll get to know you by name. You'll train alongside a small group of people doing the same thing in their own way, nobody racing you and no need to keep up with anyone else. And quite often the best bit happens afterwards. A coffee and a chat next door in The Base Bar with the people you've just trained with.

Motoring
Motoring: Winter Wonder Make sure your dream winter drive doesn’t turn into a nightmare. Winter driving can be fresh, embracing and invigorating. Yet even the simplest of trips has the potential to catch motorists off guard, given that the colder months bring unique challenges. Thankfully, putting in place a few simple habits can make all the difference when temperatures begin to drop. Start with your tyres Your tyres are your car’s only point of contact with the road, making them one of the most important safety features during winter. Check the tread depth regularly and ensure they’re inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure, as colder weather can reduce tyre pressure naturally. While winter tyres aren’t essential for most UK motorists, they can provide noticeably better grip in prolonged cold weather, particularly if you live in rural areas. Look after your battery Flat batteries are one of the most common causes of winter breakdowns. Cold temperatures make it harder for batteries to perform, particularly if they’re already several years old.
In addition, allow enough time to completely de-ice every window, mirrors and lights before driving away, not just a patch for you to peer through! Respect black ice Black ice remains one of winter’s biggest hazards because it’s often invisible. It commonly forms on bridges, shaded roads and untreated surfaces, particularly during early mornings and evenings. Pack an emergency kit Keeping a few essentials in the boot can make an unexpected delay far more manageable. A torch, phone charger, high-visibility vest, blanket, warm gloves, bottle of water, ice scraper, de-icer and a few snacks take up very little space but can prove invaluable if you’re stranded or caught in heavy traffic.
If your engine seems slower to start than usual or dashboard warning lights appear, it’s worth having the battery tested before it lets you down. See and be seen With shorter days, many journeys take place in darkness or poor weather. Before setting off, make sure all lights are working and keep headlights, number plates and windows clean. Never let the fuel run too low Many drivers are guilty of stretching one last journey from an almost-empty tank, but winter isn’t the time to take chances. Keeping your fuel level above a quarter of a tank reduces the risk of condensation forming in the fuel system. Slow down Perhaps the biggest mistake drivers make during winter is assuming they can continue exactly as they would in July. The safest motorists simply adapt, allow extra time, drive more smoothly and accept that arriving 10 minutes later is infinitely preferable to not arriving at all.

Homes & Gardens
A Design for Life The Kevin McCloud Column Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud discusses how our homes truly pay their way at Christmas. Christmas has a wonderful way of exposing the truth about our homes. For most of the year, a house can get away with looking beautiful while quietly hiding its flaws. Then December arrives. Suddenly there are extra coats draped over chairs, relatives wandering through the hallway, grandchildren building dens in the sitting room, and enough food in the kitchen to feed a small village. If a house has weaknesses, Christmas has an uncanny knack of finding them! Ultimately, we’ve become obsessed with appearances beautiful kitchens, dramatic staircases and magazine-worthy living rooms. Yet good design isn’t really about impressing visitors for 10 minutes; it’s more configured for making everyday life easier for the people who live there. Christmas is perhaps the greatest annual test of that philosophy. Take the kitchen, for starters. It has evolved
into something far more important than the room where meals are prepared: during the festive season, it’s command central. The best kitchens aren’t simply efficient; they invite participation. Lighting, too, quietly transforms a house at this time of year, while storage is another unsung hero. So this year, don’t concern yourself if the cushions aren’t perfectly arranged or the hallway becomes a little crowded. If your home encourages people to linger a little longer, to talk a little more and to leave with happy memories, then it has done precisely what good design was always meant to do.

Homes & Gardens
Gardening: Greenfingers… The Alan Titchmarsh Column He’s a magnificent broadcaster, gifted gardener, brilliant author and all-round horticultural visionary. This issue, Alan Titchmarsh examines how our gardens change during these cold winter months. People often ask me whether there’s anything to do in the garden in December. I usually smile before answering, because the question assumes that gardens somehow switch off for winter. They don’t. It’s more that they simply change their pace. The truth is, I rather like the garden at this time of year. Instead of flowers demanding attention, you’re drawn to the bones of the garden. It’s like admiring the architecture of a building once the curtains have been pulled back. Then there are the winter visitors. Robins seem positively emboldened at Christmas, hopping around with the confidence of old friends; while blackbirds rummage beneath hedges in search of hidden treats.
If you’ve taken the trouble to leave seed, fresh water or a few berry-producing shrubs, your garden suddenly becomes one of the busiest restaurants in town. Of course, there are still jobs to be done. Fallen leaves won’t gather themselves; pots may need protecting from prolonged frost, and any remaining bulbs are best tucked safely into the ground before winter tightens its grip. But December, like life, benefits from knowing when to slow down. There’s also that feeling that the festive period encourages us to gather indoors, yet by throwing on a coat and an extra pair of socks, there’s little better than stepping outside, breathing in the cold air and clearing the mind… not least if you’re about to be descended upon by the in-laws! Perhaps that’s why I never feel quite as gloomy about winter as some people do. Every bud waiting patiently on a branch is already preparing for spring, while beneath the soil, roots continue their unseen work, storing energy for the months ahead. Nature understands something we often forget: growth doesn’t always happen where we can see it. As gardeners, we’re inclined to think our role is to keep busy, to keep going, to keep growing! Yet sometimes the greatest gift we can give a garden is simply the chance to breathe – so try it this winter, and savour the stillness while you do.

Book Reviews
Fine Festive Forays into the Book World What books to look out for as the busy Christmas period kicks into gear. The Fires of December Brandon Sanderson Mega-selling sciencefantasy supremo Brandon Sanderson weaves another compelling story from the Cosmere universe, as a courageous young woman sets sail up the River Violet to warn a king’s court of impending plague. From the creator of The Stormlight Archive and the Mistborn saga, this standalone novel is a brilliant tale of intrigue and attraction. Published December 8th by Orion. Stay For Another Day John Hendy From sell-out arena tours, to working as a roofer, East 17 band member John Hendy’s untold story is one of fame, fortune, and what happened afterwards. An incredibly moving tale, Hendy’s story and words go far beyond a standard celebrity reflection – it is a deeply authentic narrative that reminds us we are all human, and despite the dramatic highs that come about – including selling over 20 million records – there are often lows waiting just around the corner. The former pop idol, now a roofer, tells his story. Published November 27th by Cinalight

Just in Time Emily Wibberley and Austin SiegemundBroka For Gwen Bailey, taking a yellow taxicab in NYC is a magical experience. Literally. When Gwen hails any taxi and mutters a date in her past, she is transported to that time. As a perfectionist, it’s allowed her to achieve the perfect GPA, perfect performance reviews, perfect everything. And if she makes a mistake, well, Gwen can just hop in a cab and correct it. She’s never met anyone else with this ability… until Ian, because for Ian Knox, time travel is for helping the people he loves. The concept weaves the past and present of two strangers together in this whimsical romance. Published on December 10th by Bloomsbury Lina and June Genevieve Wheeler The second novel from Genevieve Wheeler, author of Goodreads Best Debut Novel award nominee Adelaide. Lina and June’s friendship shouldn’t make sense. June has her future planned to a T; Lina takes life day by day, party by party. June’s dreams are colour-coded and neatly filed, while Lina’s are even too big for New York City, where she and June are university students. But after a messy night out throws the two girls together, it seems like nothing can tear them apart… until June’s health takes an unexpected turn for the worse. Then Lina jets off to Paris, leaving her best friend behind. As Lina and June’s once intertwined lives veer off on separate paths, they’re on their own to figure out how to fix their severed bond. Children & Education
Parenting Making a Meal of it Ask any parent and they’ll tell you how mealtimes can evolve from a happy family occasion into a saga of moans, morals and stubborn moodiness! Here are some ideas to make family mealtimes something everyone looks forward to. It’s easy to see why family meals can begin to feel more like hard work than quality time, yet they’re still one of the simplest ways to bring everyone together. Indeed, studies suggest that eating as a family can support children’s language development, confidence and emotional wellbeing, while also giving busy households a chance to pause and catch up. The trick isn’t making every meal perfect, it’s ensuring children want to be there in the first place. Give everyone a role Perhaps Monday is Mexican night, or build-a-burger is planned in for the weekend – let them have a say. The same goes for the actual preparation – young kids might wash vegetables or lay the cutlery, while older ones can stir a sauce, chop ingredients under supervision or choose the week’s dessert. Youngsters are far more likely to engage with mealtimes if they feel involved before the food even reaches the table.
Take the pressure off conversation Not every family meal needs to become a deep discussion about school or future plans - sometimes the best conversations begin with something completely unexpected. Ask everyone to describe the funniest thing that happened that day, where they’d most like to travel, or which superpower they’d choose if given the chance. Anything that sparks ideas or conversation is good. Keep distractions away from the table This applies to adults as much as children - phones, televisions and tablets will always compete for attention, so ensure they are switched off and out of the way. Let the conversation do the talking… literally. Be flexible Finally, remember a shared breakfast or sandwich lunch holds just the same opportunity to bond as does an evening meal, so mix up the occasions, be flexible, and savour in the foodie fun of family.

A Student’s View Is There a Future for Fanaticism? We all have our obsessions – but are there too many things to obsess about in the modern world? During the seemingly endless days of post A-level summer one sunny June afternoon I was spending my freedom, as you do, at the youth-ridden bonanza of Birchover open gardens; wandering around lavish front yards, laden with pristine flower beds and borders trimmed to absolute perfection, the proud owners soaking up the sun and the praise of their visitors. In addition to the gardens though, situated just across the road from the Druid Inn, stood a line of older men all showcasing their steam engines (not the full train, just the actual engine part) with such pride. There wasn’t much to these steam engines: yes, such innovation was a flagship component to industrial Britain that anyone can admire regardless of interest, but all it really did was just turn and turn. But despite the monotony, these men stood happily accompanying their models with pride oozing from their sun-soaked faces. After having a nosey in most of the gardens, we decided to approach the men and enquire about the origins of such enthusiasm. My memory’s foggy on exactly what one man said but I remember his interest beginning at a younger age and, clearly, for most of his life he’d retained the pleasure of observing his prized industrial trophy.
on a single entity as, nowadays, our currency of interest is spent on a wider scale. Mass globalisation and the digital boom have caused this pluralisation, which not only shifts once narrow interest concentration but erodes the novelty of new things as there’s too much information to fully digest and appreciate. Such innovations back then radiated so much more brilliance, not because anything was different about them, it’s just there was much less exposure to the wider world which gave a novelty to the new. Go and watch the 1981 BBC archives video titled ‘1981: Are crisp flavours out of control?’ The sheer shock of the people sampling the new flavours of crisps reflects the novelty of newness those times enjoyed and perhaps took for granted. Nowadays, new crisp flavours would likely be showcased with a small, irrelevant advert on social media that would be quickly whisked away with rest of the onslaught of daily information we are helpless receptors of. I could be wrong. Perhaps in our old age our life slows down due to having less to worry about – but we have no current evidence of this with younger generations. Overall, the fanaticism that we see in the older sectors of society is looking short in lifespan; as long as our attention remains diluted, the novelty that fostered passion in decades prior is endangered. There will be some young fanatics out there, but the majority of younger people probably yearn for a slower way of living that my age associate with pre 2000s decades. But we are victims of the modern world, where living free of devices that scatter interest is increasingly difficult. And so, perhaps fanatics like that proud old man in Birchover will become even more of a rarity in years to come.
This got me thinking though: if this man’s youth had occurred in the globalised 21st century, would his love for steam engines carry the same calibre of fanaticism or not? Realistically, it’s highly unlikely. Our interests and time now are highly pluralised, meaning it’s nearly impossible to commit our focus

Celebrity Interview: Holly Willoughby: Finding Balance For over two decades, Holly Willoughby has been one of Britain’s most recognisable television personalities. As she launches her new lifestyle project ‘Together’, the 45-year-old presenter is embracing a new chapter of her career, craving balance and stability away from the spotlight. “I think your priorities naturally change as you get older. When you’re younger, it’s very easy to think every opportunity has to be taken because you’re worried another one won’t come along. You spend a lot of time proving yourself. As I’ve got older, I’ve realised it’s much more important to choose the things that genuinely excite me and allow space for the rest of life as well.” It’s a philosophy that has developed over the course of 25 years
in the public eye. Beginning her television career as a teenager, Holly grew up in front of the cameras, rapidly building a reputation as one of Britain’s most charismatic female presenters. “I’ve been incredibly lucky to do a job I love for so long, but television can move at an extraordinary pace. You’re always thinking about tomorrow’s programme or the next project. Eventually you realise it’s okay to pause occasionally. In fact, I’d say it’s essential. “I don’t chase perfection anymore because I’ve realised it doesn’t exist. We can be incredibly hard on ourselves, especially as women. We think we have to be everything to everyone all the time, and that’s exhausting. Sometimes good enough really is good enough, and there’s something wonderfully freeing about accepting that.” Home has become an important anchor amid a busy career. Holly has often spoken about her love of interiors, cooking and creating spaces where friends and family naturally gather, believing the simplest moments are often the most memorable. “I’ve always loved that feeling when everyone ends up around the kitchen table without really planning to. Someone makes a cup of tea, somebody else starts cooking, conversations drift from one subject to another and before you know it you’ve spent hours together. Those are the moments you remember years later. “Sometimes finding balance is simply giving yourself permission to enjoy where you are. Listen to yourself – consider what you want and what you need, and move forward on that basis only.”

Friendship Blooms ‘Say it with flowers’ and spread some happiness within the community! Let All Things Local help you to put a smile on the face of someone who truly deserves it. Perhaps a friend or family member Rachael Collins from Fleur Florist is always there for you through thick and thin, or someone in a local business always goes above and beyond to provide an exceptional service. There could be a volunteer who doesn’t realise how much their support is valued … or, maybe, someone you know has had a tough time and deserves a floral ‘pick me up’. Whatever the reason, let All Things Local help you to show your appreciation by surprising them with a beautiful bouquet supplied by Rachael Collins (pictured) from Fleur Florist of King Street, Belper. This issue, we’re delighted to present the Friendship Blooms bouquet to Lynne Millward of Kilburn. She was nominated by her daughter, Sallyann Millward from Horsley Woodhouse. Here’s what Sallyann wrote: “I would like to nominate my lovely Mum who, since losing her Mum, has been raising money for Marie Curie. All year she knits small items to sell locally. She also does a Marie Curie coffee morning and raffle yearly to raise awareness. She donates the profits to Marie Curie as a way to thank them for the help they gave her when she needed them. I know she would be absolutely thrilled to receive the floral bouquet.” Sallyann Millward Do you know someone who deserves a bouquet? Send in your nomination and let us surprise them! Simply state (in 100 words or fewer) who you are nominating and why you’d like them to receive the Friendship Blooms bouquet. Please include your contact details as well as their name and address (or where we can find them!). You can nominate more than one person if they are living/working at the same address… and, remember, flowers don’t just have to be for women! Please note, the only rule is that the person receiving the flowers must live/work/volunteer within the distribution area of All Things Local (see front cover for details). Send your nomination by post to: Friendship Blooms, All Things Local, 74 Woodhouse Road, Kilburn, Belper, Derbyshire DE56 0NA or e-mail it to helen@allthingslocal.co.uk, putting ‘Friendship Blooms Village’ as the subject. Please include your full name, address and daytime telephone number on your nomination.

Closing date for nominations for the next issue is Tuesday 15th December 2026. All nominations are kept on file and you will be contacted if your nomination has been selected. Contact information is only used by All Things Local; no information is given to any third party.

Local History Something from Strutts
The Herbert Strutt Grammar School – now Strutts Community Centre – has its very own 007! Mr Tunnicliffe, the first headmaster, had sown the seeds of a broad curriculum. In the early days of the school, pupils were taken to Derby Grand Theatre to see Shakespeare’s ‘Julius Caesar’ when some of the Governors questioned the propriety of taking children to a theatre. However, Mr Tunnicliffe had gained the consent of parents and so the tradition of taking pupils on theatre visits began. There was a school play production every year, directed by one of the teachers and with all hands on deck as a stage had to be erected in the Hall and all the lighting, sound, scenery, costumes and make-up provided by teachers and older pupils. A House Play Competition and Choir Competition took place in alternate years when pupils were entirely responsible for the productions. It was great teamwork and a lot of fun.
Graham Haberfield playing the character Jerry Booth in the ITV soap opera Coronation Street
It’s not surprising that after appearing in school and house plays, a number of pupils chose to ‘tread the boards’. Possibly the most well-known in his time, was (Sir) Alan Bates who became a star of theatre, film and television. The school magazine, ‘The Scroll’, singled him out for his school performance in Wilde’s ‘The Importance of Being Ernest’, ‘as one who was not only an able player himself, but [...] by his acting encouraged and stimulated the rest of the cast to give a performance to match his own’. He went on to study at RADA and to appear on stage and in
Sir Alan Bates, pictured during the production of the 1967 film adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s novel, Far from the Madding Crowd
‘Whistle Down the Wind’, ‘The Mayor of Casterbridge’, ‘Women in Love’ to name but a few. You may remember Graham Haberfield, well-known for his part in ‘Coronation Street’, but who also took time out to appear in repertory. Sadly he died very young. Both he and Brenda Lawrence, another Strutts’ pupil, studied at Bristol Old Vic. Brenda appeared on stage, film and television in the 60s – in Secret Agent, Man in a Suitcase, Oranges & Sunshine and more.
Timothy Dalton portraying the iconic secret agent James Bond
So, to our own 007. Timothy Dalton left Strutts at the age of 16 in 1962, to attend RADA having toured with the National Youth Theatre. He played James Bond in ‘The Living Daylights’ and ‘Licence to Kill’ and starred in many films including ‘The Lion in Winter’ and ‘Wuthering Heights’ and also in theatre productions. Strutts is rightly proud of its acting alumni. By Sue Salaun and Joan Hardy, Belper Strutts Society

Past or Present? Why, at Christmas, traditions matter more than gifts. Whether untangling fairy lights from last year, hearing a favourite festive song on the radio, or that aroma of cinnamon, psychologists believe it is traditions, rather than presents, that leave the deepest and longest-lasting impression. One reason is that traditions create a sense of stability. After all, rituals we repeat each December provide reassuring continuity, and those rituals also strengthen our sense of belonging, reinforcing family identity, and helping us feel part of something larger than ourselves. Of course, often the simplest traditions become the most treasured. A family breakfast before opening presents, a winter walk after Christmas lunch, or gathering in the kitchen to bake mince pies may seem ordinary at the time, yet these repeated experiences gradually become woven into our personal histories. Psychologists suggest this happens because our brains are especially good at attaching emotion to repeated events. Every year a habit is repeated, another layer of memory
is added. Over time, those experiences become rich with nostalgia – a powerful emotion that has been shown to improve mood, reduce feelings of loneliness and even increase optimism about the future. Interestingly, this explains why many adults work so hard to recreate elements of their own childhood Christmases for the next generation. So this festive season, it’s worth asking yourself what you’ll remember five or ten years from now. Will it be the latest gadget or jumper you unwrapped, or will it be laughing around the dining table, playing a board game that somehow ends in chaos every year?
We are delighted to be hosting our annual Christmas Carol & Memorial Service at The Lion Hotel, 24 Bridge Street, Belper, DE56 1AX
