Hello readers

Welcome to the October/November issue … and, we’ll begin with an apology! In the last issue’s Welcome Letter we talked about the inclement weather and the apparent lack of summer. Well, at the time of going to print that was true … but in the short period whilst the magazines were in production the weather did a massive U-turn (maybe it didn’t take kindly to our criticism!) and proceeded to knock out a series of sweltering heatwaves throughout the following two months. By the time the magazines landed through letterboxes the country was basking in Mediterranean levels of sunshine, the rain was already a distant memory, and all our readers must’ve thought we’d gone utterly potty! So, that’s a lesson to us … we’ll keep schtum about the weather from now on! Actually, weather aside, we do have something very important to talk to you about: a change to the team at All Things Local. After 17 wonderful years with All Things Local, our Advertising Coordinator Ruth Brown is moving on to a new chapter. We’d like to thank Ruth for all her hard work, dedication and the many relationships she has built with our advertisers over the years – many of you will have got to know Ruth throughout her time working on our local community magazine. She will certainly be missed. We’re delighted to introduce Rachel Harding, who will be taking over from Ruth from our December/ January issue. Just a Thought... Just Don’t

Hello there, wonderful readers. I got to thinking today about all the times we underplay our achievements. ‘No Fliss – not me!’, you may think. You’re probably partly right. I’ll bet if something obvious like a graduation, a promotion, a birth or a sporting accolade appears amongst friends or family then you are in there, waving the figurative, or potentially literal, banner of congratulations. You may even stretch to acknowledging the congratulations of others when you yourself achieve something of note (this one is slightly harder, we are British after all!) BUT – you knew there would be a BIG but where I was concerned (sniggers about bottoms welcomed!) … BUT – what about the day-to-day wins that you brush aside as if they were nothing? You know: the family meal preparation, the schedule collation, the pet grooming and walking, the cleaning, the shopping, the emotional support etc. We have a word that immediately removes all triumph from our impact in this world, and it is the most reductive word in the English language – JUST.

Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover This year, Bookshop Day falls on Saturday the 10th of October. It’s part of a year-round campaign called ‘Books Are My Bag’ organised by the Booksellers Association. It was created to celebrate bookshops and the part they play in our communities. When you walk into a bookshop, you’re faced with endless possibilities. You could travel to another country, solve a murder, fall in love, or explore another time. Definitely exciting, but also overwhelming. How do you know which one to choose? I’ve struggled with that question since leaving university. Despite studying fiction and poetry, I gradually turned to non-fiction and have avoided the fiction section of bookshops for years. The problem was, I did judge a book by its cover. I’d look at the picture, read the blurb, and decide I already knew what the story would be about. So why bother reading it? Then my sister changed my mind. I bought her a book from a stall where the books were wrapped in brown paper, with a tag giving a brief overview of each story. She opened hers and, because

‘Oh, I just did the weekly shop today,’ or ‘I just cleaned the bathroom and the bedrooms this afternoon,’ perhaps, ‘I just took Stanley on a 5-mile walk this morning’ (for reference, Stanley is supposed to represent a dog not a teenager, but they definitely need walking too!). All the things we do each day are part of the tapestry of life and keep the threads weaving in and out of each other beautifully. So, you may not feel that these daily acts of living are anything to shout about – and, dear reader, I am not asking you to organise a brass band every time you hoover the lounge (but if you want to, then I say go for it!). What I am saying is please stop dismissing the amazing things you do to keep your house, job, pets, family and friends going. So, the next time you feel yourself sliding into that hyper-modest state we have all been conditioned to employ when discussing ourselves – JUST DON’T – please.

I didn’t have high hopes, but that one book changed my reading habits completely. I’d forgotten how easily fiction can pull you into another world: feeling the highs and lows of a story, becoming absorbed in unfamiliar surroundings, and rooting for characters who start to feel real. I spent less time mindlessly scrolling and more time reading. Now I listen when my sister recommends a book. I’ve also learnt that reading shouldn’t feel like homework. If a book isn’t working for you, you don’t have to finish it. Life really is too short. But sometimes, stepping outside your usual choices can lead to something wonderful. We’re lucky to have an independent bookshop in Belper: Dormouse Books. So, this Bookshop Day, why not head into town, browse beyond your usual section, and see what catches your eye? Living the Midlife The Underwhelm of Adulting I’ll be entirely honest with you … I thought I’d have it all sussed by now. At the ripe age of *redacted* (ok, not entirely honest with you, then) I was fully expecting to have this adulting thing all worked out. But it’s somehow not quite what I expected. I feel like the glossy brochure for ‘adulthood’ may have slightly oversold its merits. I remember well the feeling of turning 18 (some details are a little fuzzy round the edges, for obvious reasons) but I recall it being a really BIG THING. My friends and I couldn’t wait to be 18 and embrace all the fun and freedom that being an adult unleashed. Little did we know…! After the initial excitement, the full impact of ‘being an adult’ slowly dawns. If I could turn the clock back now to those days before responsibilities and expectations, well, I’d be in Doc Brown’s DeLorean in a heartbeat! Somewhere along the line, after enjoying your first legal drink, your first holiday with friends and your first solo drive, your life becomes that of a ‘proper’ grown up and you find yourself having to know about things like mortgages, pensions, compound interest, first aid, household maintenance, how to sew on a button and what day the bins go out … the freedom and excitement you were desperate for has morphed into a series of mundane responsibilities, daily decisions and random thoughts pinballing around an over-tired brain. When you’re young, adulthood looks glamorous. You imagine yourself drinking posh coffee, owning tasteful furniture and spending your days deciding which lovely restaurant to dine in with friends at the weekend, after shutting down your laptop following another day at your highly successful job. In reality, the coffee’s gone cold because you didn’t have a minute to drink it. The dog’s been sick on the second-hand furniture (and the cushions are all saggy because the kids have been bouncing on them, again). Your household budget will only stretch to a meal out on birthdays so you’ve got to decide what to cook for tea – again – whilst trying to hit protein and calorie goals set by some impossibly beautiful influencer (who appears to be living the life you imagined), and you

never shut down your laptop because the job is never done. Your first payday signified time to treat yourself … nowadays it just reminds you that it’s time to update your Excel budgeting spreadsheet. On a really good day, you might find and cancel a direct debit you’d forgotten about. Whoop whoop! No longer do you meet with friends and chat into the early hours about hopes and dreams – you’re more likely to strike up a conversation about household appliances. How do you rate the Shark over the Dyson? And is an upholstery cleaner worth the investment? Then you’re home and in your PJs by 9.30pm. This shift is so subtle at first that you barely notice it, but slowly you realise that being an adult isn’t about being footloose and fancy-free, it’s basically about becoming your own parent. You talk to yourself out-loud, constantly (and often in public): “Have you drunk enough today?” “Remember your coat.” “Put that back; you can’t spend £40 on something you don’t need.” Maybe the greatest achievement of middle age is accepting that nobody really knows what they’re doing. We’re all clomping around playing dress-up in our mum’s high heels waiting for someone to tell us that the game’s up, we’ve been revealed as an imposter in this grown-up life. Everyone’s winging it, just some are better at hiding it than others. So, if today you’ve successfully ‘adulted’ in any capacity – put a wash on, changed the bed, paid a bill, eaten a vegetable – give yourself a pat on the back. Celebrate the trivial; childhood you would be in awe at your grownup-ness!

One Lion in America I’ve never minded travelling alone despite being lucky enough to have an amazing family and friends. There’s something special about stepping outside your comfort zone, meeting new people, and discovering that you’re perfectly capable of enjoying your own company. Four years ago, I travelled to Qatar for the World Cup and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, so this year off I went – Dallas bound! Flying from Heathrow, I found myself sitting near five lads from Bradford. After a couple of generously sized American Airlines glasses of wine, we got chatting. They’d been saving for four years to make the trip. I do miss travelling with my wife – long haul flights are always better with company, and we’ve had many amazing trips – but you always meet people to chat to and hear interesting stories, which I love to share with my wife when I get home. As I stepped off the plane in Dallas, the Texas heat hit me like a shovel to the face. It was glorious. An Uber soon took me to my hotel in Uptown Dallas. The first match on my itinerary was the Netherlands versus Japan in Arlington. On the train there, I met a mum and her daughters who were heading to their first live “soccer” match. By the end of our conversation, they’d promised that from now on they’d call it “football”. Then, I saw the stadium. For someone more accustomed to the grounds of the EFL and Premier League, it was breathtaking. Rising above the skyline, it looked less like a football stadium and more like a spaceship in the middle of Texas. Walking through the glass entrance took my breath away; the sheer scale is hard to describe. Once inside, nobody checked your ticket. You could enter your designated section but sit almost anywhere … a useful tip that would come in handy for the England game, later. The atmosphere was fantastic. Japan may only have one song, but they sing it with incredible passion. The Dutch, as always, brought colour, noise and endless energy. After the game, while we waited for a fleet of shuttle buses back to the station, giant fans sprayed a welcome cooling mist over the queuing crowds.

The following day was more relaxed. I did some shopping and visited the FIFA Fan Shop. My boys got World Cup keyrings from Qatar in 2022, so naturally I added a Dallas 2026 keyring to the collection. Another day took me out to the famous Stockyards outside Dallas. I met more England fans - Mike from Dorset and Shaun from Preston. We spent the day laughing, drinking and soaking up the atmosphere while watching what has to be one of the most polite cattle drives in history. None of us, however, were brave enough to have a go at line dancing in Billy Bob’s. By the time we’d taxied back to The Londoner – England’s unofficial HQ pub – they’d already run out of draught beer. The atmosphere was lively – a little too lively for me these days. It was good fun, but I quietly made my excuses and headed back. Then came England matchday. I repeated the now familiar journey from Dallas to Arlington. Harry Maguire’s famous chant echoed around the concourse while supporters happily paid $16 a beer without complaint. Inflation clearly hadn’t dampened anyone’s enthusiasm. Remembering there were no ticket checks inside, I made my way behind the goal where the England fans had gathered. Best decision of the trip. England won comfortably. As Wonderwall rang around that enormous stadium, I felt that familiar lump in my throat. For a few minutes, thousands of miles from home, I was home. Surrounded by ordinary England fans – people who sacrifice time, money and holidays to follow their country across continents. No politics, no division, just a shared love of the team and the memories being created together. So... is it coming home? Well, in the words of Oasis... Definitely. Maybe. Whatever happens, I’ve already started researching villas in Spain, Portugal and Morocco. Because maybe next time, this lone Lion needs his pride. By One Lion of Belper

Bayeux Tapestry Thought to have been made in England, the Bayeux Tapestry is paying a return visit after almost a millennium. The Bayeux Tapestry is effectively a 70-metre comic strip, stitched in wool nearly 1,000 years ago. The medieval world’s greatest surviving piece of visual storytelling, it depicts one of the most consequential moments in English history, a breathtaking embroidered panorama of the Norman Conquest of 1066. Despite its name, it is an embroidered cloth, almost certainly made in England, probably in Canterbury, within a decade or two of the Conquest. The embroiderers were probably Anglo-Saxon women, renowned for their needlework. It is traditionally associated with Bishop Odo of Bayeux, half-brother of William the Conqueror, who may have commissioned it for his new cathedral in Normandy. The tapestry narrates events from around 1064 to the Battle of Hastings. It culminates in the death of King Harold – famously shown with an arrow through his eye, although scholars debate this interpretation – and the English fleeing. Across 58 scenes, featuring over 600 characters, 200 horses and countless ships, it provides an invaluable visual record of 11th-century warfare, clothing, architecture and daily life on both sides of the Channel.

Its survival is remarkable. It narrowly escaped destruction during the French Revolution, when it was almost used as a wagon cover, and was hidden during the Second World War to prevent seizure by the Nazis. The cloth has been in Bayeux since 1077 and is now one of Normandy’s most treasured possessions. The tapestry has been loaned to the British Museum and will be displayed from September 2026 to July 2027 – its first time on English soil since it was made. It arrived in Britain on 10 July in a climate-controlled crate, travelling through the Channel Tunnel under police escort. In return, treasures including artefacts from Sutton Hoo and the Lewis chess pieces will travel to museums in Normandy. The loan coincides with the Bayeux Museum’s renovation and the 1,000th anniversary of William the Conqueror’s birth. The exhibition offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience one of England’s greatest historical treasures. Pumpkin Chilli con Carne This fright-night feast isn’t just for Halloween – it’s the perfect winter warmer the whole family will love. Serves: 4 Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 1 hour Ingredients: • 1 small pumpkin or butternut squash • 2 tbsp vegetable oil, plus extra to drizzle • Salt and black pepper • 500g beef mince • 1 small onion, peeled and diced • 1 green pepper, deseeded and diced • 1 tbsp tomato purée • 1 x 400g tin kidney beans, drained and rinsed • 1 x 500g carton passata • 1 tsp chilli powder (heat of your choice) • ½ tbsp dark brown soft sugar • 1 tsp yeast extract • 1 x 400g tin chopped tomatoes • 700g baby potatoes • 1x 300ml tub crème fraîche • 30g watercress, finely chopped Method

Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan 160°C, gas mark 4. Peel and halve the pumpkin (or butternut squash) and scoop out the seeds. Dice half of the pumpkin into 1cm cubes and reserve. Chop the remaining pumpkin into large chunks, place in an oven tray, drizzle with oil and season. Roast in the preheated oven for approximately 25 minutes or until cooked through. Meanwhile, place a large pan on a mediumhigh heat. Add the oil and heat until beginning to smoke. Add the minced beef and fry until browned. Drain the beef onto some kitchen paper.

Turn the heat down to medium. Add the beef back to the pan, then add in the onion, diced pumpkin and green pepper, cooking until the onions are translucent. Stir in the tomato purée and cook for a further minute before adding the kidney beans, passata, chilli powder, sugar, yeast extract and chopped tomatoes. Cover the pan with a tight-fitting lid and simmer for 1 hour. Place the potatoes in an oven tray, drizzle with vegetable oil and season. Roast in the oven for 30-40 minutes, or until cooked through and crisp on the outside. Once the roasted pumpkin is cooked, remove from the oven and place into a blender. Add a ladleful of liquid from the chilli and blend until smooth. Add to the simmering pan and stir through. Mix together the crème fraîche and watercress, and season to taste. Divide the potatoes between four bowls. Add a ladleful of chilli and serve with a generous dollop of crème fraîche. Beer: Green Hops Green hopped beers celebrate one of the shortest and most anticipated moments in the brewing calendar. Unlike conventional hops, which are dried and stored for year-round use, green hops are picked and brewed within hours of harvest, preserving delicate grassy, floral and herbal aromas that quickly disappear once harvested. The result is a beer that captures the character of fresh hops in a way no dried pellet can replicate. The short harvest has created a tradition of its own. As the first bines are ready, breweries race to produce the season’s first green hopped beer, often timing their brews to coincide with the arrival of freshly picked hops from the fields. It is a style built around immediacy, where timing is every bit as important as recipe design. English bitters, pale ales and ESBs have long been natural partners, allowing the freshness of the hops to take centre stage without being overshadowed by darker malts or heavier hopping rates.

blend with a small quantity of other grapes from Rioja and Navarra, to produce a smooth, easydrinking wine with a punch. They age the wine for 12 months in oak barrels before bottling, giving aromas of toasted wood and spices.

As I write this, we have just had our 5th heat wave. Having probably drunk too much white and rosé through the summer, how about we look at a red as we head into autumn? I have always liked a Spanish Tempranillo wine, which goes well as the evenings close in and the heating is back on. Tempranillo is the main red grape grown in Spain. It likes the cooler conditions of northern Spain, particularly around the Rioja region in the foothills of the Pyrenees and the valleys of the Ribero del Duero. Not only is it used to make wine from mostly Tempranillo grapes, it is often added to other red wines to help soften the wines. As the Spanish wine growers travelled around the world, they took Tempranillo with them. It’s now grown in California and Oregon in the USA, Argentina and Chile in South America and in Australia and New Zealand. Temprano is the Spanish word for ‘early’, as Tempranillo ripens 2 weeks before the other main red grape of the region, Grenache. One of the best examples is Marqués de Cáceres Rioja Crianza. They have been making quality wines since the 1970s in the Rioja region. Taking the Tempranillo grapes from their vineyards in Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa, they

Fitness Matters Thinking About Getting Fitter? It’s Never Too Late!

Getting older does not mean slowing down completely. In fact, starting a fitness routine later in life can bring huge benefits to body and mind. Regular exercise can help improve balance, strength and mobility, making everyday activities such as climbing stairs, gardening or carrying shopping easier. Gentle strength training, walking and mobility exercises all play an important part in keeping the body strong and moving well. Exercise is not just good for physical health: regular movement improves mood, boosts energy and helps reduce feelings of loneliness or isolation. It can also be a great way to meet new people. Many people are now choosing to work with a personal trainer – this option isn’t just for young people or gym enthusiasts! A good personal trainer can design a

programme specifically for your needs, fitness level and any medical concerns or injuries. Using a personal trainer can help build confidence, flexibility, balance and fitness and is a particularly good way to start exercising if you have not done it for many years or feel unsure about where to start. Having someone there to guide and motivate you can also make it easier to stay consistent. You don’t have to lift heavy weights or do intense workouts; many sessions for older adults focus on functional fitness – movements that help with everyday life, such as standing up from chairs, improving posture and increasing confidence in movement. There are other ways to become active without joining a gym, too. Local walking groups, chair-based exercise classes, swimming, yoga, Pilates, community fitness sessions or home workouts can all be excellent choices. Derbyshire Walking: Hartington - The Dales of the River Dove Walk

Distance: 5.5 miles (8.8 km) Start: Hartington Village; SK17 0AL; w3w: ///repayment.terminal.moved Car Parking: Mill Lane (Parsons Field), Hartington SK17 0BE; w3w: ///chart.sunbeam.dynasties (charges apply). OS Map: OS Explorer OL24 This beautiful walk starts and ends in the pretty Peak District village of Hartington and takes you beside the sparkling River Dove through some of the finest limestone dales in the area. Directions: 1. Start your walk at the three-pointed signpost by the bus stop in the centre of Hartington village. Walk south along Mill Lane, passing the Charles Cotton Hotel on your right. Immediately after the Hartington Farm Shop & Cafe, turn left and follow the footpath that runs between the Farm Shop and the toilets. 2. Go through a gate and follow the clear path out across fields, with beautiful views all around. On reaching a second gate at a crossroads of paths, go straight on and immediately through a third gate ahead to continue over fields. Follow the well signposted path to eventually reach a further gate in a stone wall which leads into Morson Wood and Beresford Dale. 3. Follow the clear path through woodland, soon meeting up with the River Dove which runs to your right. Cross the river by way of a pretty footbridge to enter the area known as Pike Pool. Look out for the distinctive limestone column rising up out of the water immediately after the bridge. Continue along the path, now with the River Dove on your left, through beautiful Beresford Dale. 4. On reaching a T-junction of paths, turn left and cross the river again by way of a further footbridge. Immediately after crossing the bridge turn right and follow the clear path across fields. Go straight on through two gates to enter Wolfscote Dale, with the River Dove again on your right. 5. Follow the clear path through Wolfscote Dale, always with the river to your right and towering cliffs on both sides. Watch out for buzzards soaring above and dippers in the river. After approx. 1.2 miles (2 km), turn left at

a prominent three-pointed signpost to enter Biggin Dale (signposted to Biggin). Follow the clear path through Biggin Dale, through a succession of wide gates. Be aware that the terrain is uneven here and the limestone rocks underfoot can be slippery, particularly when wet, so do take care. 6. After approx. 1.2 miles (2 km) look out for a threepointed wooden signpost at the end of a stone wall on your left. Turn left and follow the path signposted to Hartington. 7. The path forks at a signpost after approx. 150m. Bear left and head uphill to follow the bridleway indicated by the blue arrow. Go through a wide gate at the top of the slope to join a path that runs between stone walls on either side. Follow this clear path for approx. half a mile (900m), over a couple of low stiles, until you reach a crossroads of paths. 8. Go straight on at the crossroads of paths, following the sign to Hartington and joining a narrow country lane (Reynards Lane), again with stone walls on either side. There are magnificent views over the surrounding countryside. 9. Keep following Reynards Lane, ignoring footpaths and tracks off to the side, for approx. 3/4 of a mile (1.2 km). At a T-junction with another lane (Hall Bank), turn left and walk downhill back into Hartington. When you reach the crossroads, turn left and return to the centre of the village where you began your walk. Winter Tyres: Are They Worth It? Winter is approaching and many drivers will find themselves negotiating cold, slippery roads. During this time, winter tyres can help provide the best possible traction. How do they work? Winter tyres are designed to help improve the handling and grip of your car in colder climates and make driving in the winter months a lot safer. Standard “summer” road tyres are not as effective when tarmac is wet, icy, salty and damp. Winter tyres are constructed using softer rubber compounds and have much deeper grooves and tread to help increase grip. The treads also feature something called “sipes” – narrow cuts that allow water and snow to disperse away from the rubber. These make them better at performing in heavy rain. Advantages • Winter tyres work most effectively when the temperature drops below 7 degrees C, making them much more usable in average UK winter temperatures, as well as in snow and ice. • They often have a more robust construction than summer tyres, allowing them to fend off bumps and potholes more easily, though they can still be punctured. • Winter tyres give all types of vehicle a boost in grip levels during colder temperatures. For example, a two-wheel drive vehicle on winter tyres is safer to drive on snow and ice than a four-wheel drive car fitted with summer tyres. Disadvantages • When temperatures increase, summer tyres offer more grip and improved handling than a winter tyre operating in the same conditions. • They have more rolling resistance than a summer tyre, so you’d notice some increase in fuel consumption. • The car’s handling can be affected by the larger grooves and tread patterns. • If you remove them during the spring and summer, you have to find somewhere to keep them. How do you store them? It’s recommended you store winter tyres indoors, as placing them outdoors could weaken the rubber over time. Keep the tyres away from direct sunlight, as this

also damages the rubber, and make sure there’s enough ventilation. A garage or shed is best, but make sure you give the tyres a thorough clean before you store them, as mud, salt and water could weaken their structure. What do they cost? Everything depends on the car and the wheel size. If you drive a larger SUV, expect to pay a premium over a small hatchback. There are ranges to suit all budgets though, with winter tyres starting from around £50 each, mid-range will set you back around £110 each, while premium versions can cost more than £170 each. What about all-season tyres? Designed to operate well in a broad range of temperatures, you won’t need to swap them out seasonally. They’re often more expensive than either a summer or winter tyre, however.

Weird and wonderful October, when gardeners are getting into autumn mode, is actually a busy month. There should be squashes, main crop potatoes, spinach and leeks awaiting harvesting, not to mention autumn-fruiting raspberries and orchard fruit, including apples and pears. It’s also a great time for a gentle tidy-up of the garden and for planting spring-flowering bulbs, such as daffodils, tulips, alliums and iris. They’ll then be ready to spring into action with the new growing season. Strange but true That spring will come around is a given, but how many of these weird and wonderful facts about the world of gardening do you know? • Microscopic munching in soil creates the energy that flows between plants. This plays an important role in the carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus cycle which underpins life. Studies suggest that in just one spoonful of soil there could be more life than there are people on planet Earth. It includes bacteria, viruses, fungi, archaea (single-celled microorganisms), and protozoa (single-celled microorganisms with a nucleus), vital for eating dead and decaying plants and animals. • One of the highest-maintenance plants growing in UK gardens is the hybrid tea rose. Roses require pruning twice a year. Repeat-flowering varieties also need to be dead-headed. Diseases including blackspot and mildew are common. But if you opt for more informal shrub or species roses with

open, single or semi-double blooms, these are more appropriate for a naturalistic, easy-going style of gardening. • Buttercups are poisonous. They can be fatal to grazing animals, including horses and cattle. All species of Ranunculus contain an oil which can cause severe mouth irritation and stomach upset if eaten. Most animals avoid them. • There’s a poison garden in the UK. This is at The Alnwick Garden in Northumberland. The Chelsea Physic Garden in London also includes a dedicated area for poisonous plants, sited next to plants that have healing capabilities.

• The dandelion was once a highly useful plant. Dandelion roots were cooked as a vegetable and leaves were used in salads. The flowers would be used in wine and the dye could stain wool. • There are around 200 slugs in an average square metre of garden. • Bananas are the most consumed fruit in the world. However, their security is precarious. While there are more than 1,000 varieties, we regularly eat just one: the Cavendish. These bananas are clones, grown from a slice of another Cavendish plant and not from seed. This means the plants are unable to evolve. The disease Panama wilt has destroyed banana plantations in Asia, Africa and Australia. If it were to spread, we might no longer have bananas to eat. By Caroline Knight

Belper School The Nostalgia of Summer Summer, more than any other season, nestles itself into our lives in the sensory archive of our minds. The scent of sun-warmed rain and freshly cut grass always arrives like clockwork before the memory fully forms. It’s a temporal sanctuary where time slows down and the physical world intensifies, blooming like fireworks across our irises. As we grow up, we often chase the ghost of those endless months, realising that our deepest nostalgia isn’t for a specific place, but rather for the tranquility our minds naturally succumb to in summer. Sound is the first pillar of this nostalgia. To close your eyes and remember summer is to hear the rhythmic buzz of bees vibrating through humid afternoon air. It’s the distant, melodic chime of an ice cream truck winding through neighbourhood streets, a sound that once triggered a primal flood of excitement. Evenings were imprinted by the sharp slap of a patio door swinging shut, the muffled laughter of adults in a dimly lit garden, and the steady, comforting hum of a fan fighting the heat. These sounds composed the background music of a world without deadlines. Texture and touch engrain these memories in the body. Summer nostalgia feels like a sudden shock of cold sea water against the skin. It’s the rough texture of sand drying into a stubborn crust on your feet, and the prickly sensation of walking barefoot across freshly mown grass, daringly playing hop-scotch with the hidden bees below. The season’s defined by a loosening friction in the mind that manifests itself in the freedom of lightweight cotton clothes, the sticky residue of watermelon juice drying on your chin that causes a smile to tug at your lips and laughter to bubble from within, and the phantom sting of sunburned shoulders that signal a day well spent.

Dinners tasted like charcoal smoke and charred sweetcorn, eaten off paper plates while the sky slowly shifted from orange to a deep indigo. These flavours were uncomplicated, consumed in a rush to get back outside. Visuals blind these elements into a permanent gallery. The golden hour of a July evening possessed a cinematic quality, casting impossibly long shadows across sunburnt lawns. The world seemingly painted in oversaturated hues: the blinding glare of noon, the deep green of heavy tree canopies where sunlight dappled through, and the neon pinks of a dying twilight. Ultimately, to experience summer through the senses reminds us of a time when we were entirely present. Children don’t live in the past or the future; they exist fully within the temperature of the air and the taste of the moment. A Student’s View Why the Gen Z Prejudice Must Stop ‘Gen Z’: A colloquial expression of Generation Z of course (used to describe those born between 1997 and 2012) but one that too often is used for divisive purposes. As someone of Generation Z, it’s frustrating how my generation is portrayed across society, especially the media. Articles whose topic concerns my age group are too often accusative, disdainful and naive to our generational hardships and speak as if we’re behind some sort of viewing glass. Why non-Gen Z journalists feel responsible to speak on behalf of a whole generation is unjust as it creates an idea that Gen Z are incapable of speaking on behalf of themselves, which leaves us at a deficit of genuine journalism. Different economic circumstances and major technological advances obviously mean that the world Gen Z experiences during their youth is significantly different to the one which prior generations experienced. But surely every generation adopts a different way of life to the one it succeeds – so why is Generation Z’s lifestyle gaining so much traction? A few months ago, during A-level revision, I overheard a brief exchange between two older men which went along the lines of: ‘These young people don’t seem to be reading anymore.’ ‘Yes, what’ll happen when our generation goes, eh? Utter bedlam!’ ‘I know, but that’s exactly what my father said about our generation though.’ Maybe if the internet came some decades earlier, this man’s father may have taken to social media to rant about how these young boomers would never know the dark days of rationing or a blitz. In reality,

these opinions would have only been pub banter before something else became more worthy of a moan; in modern day, this wouldn’t be the case. This is the reason for the traction; opinion is no longer exclusive to newspapers or conversation where effort had to be made to obtain information. Nowadays, it’s instantaneous. Therefore, opinion diffuses across society faster due to online echo chambers preventing readers from initiating independent judgement, in turn creating a tendency to adopt the judgements encountered online. Lazy, miserable, woke snowflakes, too much scrolling and too little drinking seem to be our media peddled characteristics. If other generations are fed false narratives, then it accelerates a generational divide where not only do Gen Z feel unvalued by older generations, but also older generations feel more compelled to remain in bubbles exclusive to generational peers. This is completely unnecessary in the society Gen Z has to navigate: an unfairly competitive labour market (1 million unemployment), an inefficient housing market and a mental health crisis stemming from the pandemic (anxiety and depression rates up 10% since 2000). So how can a generation be optimistic about a time in their lives that generations prior associated with hope and anticipation? What these journalists don’t seem to consider is ‘why?’. Gen Z didn’t make phones or intend on the extremely damaging aspects of them to invade their lives. Do we blame the youth of swinging Britain for having smoking related health issues when that was sold as a social token? Not all articles on Gen Z share the same negativity, as younger journalists are more understanding (I would recommend Cindy Yu’s Times column, ‘Let’s cut the COVID generation some slack’) but nevertheless, few contribute to an empathetic perspective. The naive opinions that run rife in the media must stop. Tolerance and understanding must develop to stoke a more generationally unified society where Gen Z’s situation is understood, not criticised. Upbeat: Your Email Account: the ‘Front Door’ to Your Online Life As more of the world becomes digital, and we get used to using our email accounts for everything, it’s become increasingly important to recognise that your email account is, in fact, the front door to your entire online life. If a criminal wants access to your account, and has access to your emails, a simple click on ‘forgotten password’ might give them the ability to change your password, locking you out of your accounts. It can even assist criminals in taking over your mobile phone number. They also might be able to verify their own login attempts to other accounts by authorising the attempt via your email account. Email accounts can also be a treasure trove of personal information. You might have sent a photo of your passport to a friend to check in on holiday, or have your payslips sent to your emails. All these attachments, which may lurk in your sent or deleted items, could be invaluable for criminals and put you at risk of identity theft.

To protect against this, always have a unique, strong password that you use purely for your email account. This could be three random words, with a mixture of numbers and symbols mixed in. Where it is available, you should always have two factor authentication enabled on your emails too. This sends a code or link to another email or phone number to verify it’s you when trying to log in. Remember, you should never give this code to someone who calls and asks for it, or an email out of the blue requesting it – only enter the code into the trusted link you’ve used to log in. Local History

Langley Mill Pottery: James Calvert, William Adshead and Arthur Lovatt I have a small collection of pieces of Langley Mill Pottery and was interested to learn that the founder and developers were all Belper people. Now that we have lost Denby Pottery, it is interesting to look back at its Belper origins and its links to Denby. James Calvert came from Durham and may have been attracted here in the 1840s by family connections with the Harrisons of Belper. He opened a chemist shop on King Street and developed a successful patent medicine to cure influenza. One reason for setting up the pottery in 1865 might have been his need for bottles and jars but he soon widened output to include ginger beer bottles and jam pots. James was well-known in Belper as a Guardian of the Workhouse and a member of the Congregationalist Church. By 1870 he was listed as a ‘stone bottle and water filter manufacturer of Langley Mill’. The pottery was doing well and he moved from living above the shop in King Street to a large house on Brookside, locally known as “Calvert’s Castle”. The pottery site was well-chosen, next to the Midland Railway, with a coal mine and clay deposits nearby and the Cromford, Erewash and Nottingham Canals for the transport of fragile goods. In the early 1870s James briefly took on William Adshead as a partner. A Belper businessman, Adshead was also a chemist who branched out into silver and furniture polish. He too would have needed bottles and paste pots. His legacy survives today in the Adshead Ratcliffe firm which manufactures Arbo sealant products. James Calvert’s son William became a partner in the firm in the mid-1870s, married his cousin Sarah Eleanor Harrison of Belper and lived at Pottery House next to the works. When his father retired William Calvert took on new partners, the brothers Albert and John Lovatt. Born in Belper, both were potters at Denby. They would have brought ideas and creativity with them from Denby and the pottery soon began to produce beautiful Langley Art Ware in the form of bowls, vases, oil lamp bases and flower pots. and one of the most important was William Calvert’s daughter Eleanor Sarah, known as Daisy. An exquisite vase decorated by Daisy is shown below on the front cover of John and Jenifer Giblin’s book, the main source of my research. In 1895 William Calvert took a complete change of direction and moved with his family to London to set up as a stationer on Putney High Street. The Lovatts took over sole control and there followed a glorious period when many beautiful vases were made and decorated by talented artists. This lasted until the 1930s. Albert Lovatt died in 1912 and the company’s successes were brought to an end with his brother’s death in 1929. The Lovatt brothers had brought innovative ideas and technology which made Langley Ware desirable for collectors today. The pottery fell on hard times and was bought by Denby in 1959. In 1982 all manufacture was moved to Denby and the old pottery was demolished. Now the same fate has befallen Denby. It is definitely the end of an era.

Friendship Blooms ‘Say it with flowers’ and spread some happiness within the community! Let All Things Local help you to put a smile on the face of someone who truly deserves it. Perhaps a friend or family member is always there for you through thick Beverley Kennedy and thin, or someone in a local business always goes above and beyond to provide an exceptional service. There could be a volunteer who doesn’t realise how much their support is valued … or, maybe, someone you know has had a tough time and deserves a floral ‘pick me up’. Whatever the reason, let All Things Local help you to show your appreciation by surprising them with a beautiful bouquet supplied by Beverley Kennedy (pictured) from Floraline, Gregory’s Way, Belper. This issue, we’re delighted to present the Friendship Blooms bouquet to Angie Sanders from Belper. Angie was nominated by her friend Shelley Briggs, also of Belper.
