CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE WELCOME to the final round of the 2017 Australian Kart Championship presented by Jayco and Castrol EDGE in Melbourne. It is great to see so many of the classes set to be decided this weekend at the final round, at what is undoubtedly one of the most unique circuits in the world with the Melbourne CBD as a magnificent backdrop. In the corresponding round last year, we saw a number of the Champions decided in the final race, and I’m sure looking at the points across the board this will again be the case in 2017. After showing great pace all year, it was great to see Josh Fife finally break through to claim his maiden KZ2 round win in Emerald. The battle between him and Troy Loeskow this weekend will be an interesting one to watch. Of the nine classes competing this weekend, six of them have 10 points or less between first and second in the points standings. The battle in KA1 is the closest of them all with only one point separating Kyle Henry-Smith and reigning Champion Scott Sorensen at the top of the standings. It’s almost just as close in KA2, KA3 Senior, KA4 Junior and X30 with only a handful of points between the top two in each of these classes. All in all I think we’re in for a sensational finale to what has been a great year for the Australian Kart Championship. With 237 entries having been received for this weekend’s event, it brings the total number of entries across the Championship to 1231. This is a strong increase on 2016 and we look forward to an even bigger year in 2018. Thank you to our long-term partners Jayco and Castrol EDGE for their continued support alongside our official Australian Kart Championship partners Mercedes-Benz and SP Tools. These brands accompany the likes of Bridgestone, Dunlop, MG Tyres, Vortex and IAME as great supporters of our sport, and we encourage you to support them all where possible. A big thank you to all of the officials, drivers, teams and members of the karting industry who continue to make this Championship such a success and I hope you all enjoy the Gala Awards Dinner on Sunday night at Etihad Stadium. PADDOCK TORQUE...... RACE OF STARS SET TO SIZZLE
Next month’s Race of Stars event on the Gold Coast is set to be the biggest yet with more than 200 competitors set to converge on the Xtreme Karting facility for the fifth annual invitational event. After the initial round of invites were distributed to the qualified drivers from the Australian Kart Championship and respective other State and Regional Championship and Series’, the interest level from around the globe has been significant. The KZ2 field is gearing up to be the biggest in the five-year history of the event. It is expected that reigning World Champion Paolo De Conto will be returning to defend the Winner’s surfboard that he claimed in 2016 driving for the successful CRG Australia outfit. Numerous other international drivers have expressed an interest in competing at the event across a variety of classes while every State and Territory of Australia will be represented on the entry list.
VALE: ROB MACRI
The karting community farewelled one of the most likeable characters in the pit area last month with the passing of long-time mechanic Rob Macri. After racing for several years, Rob turned his hand in the late nineties to helping young drivers acheieve their goals on the kart track with his meticulous preparation, attention to detail and passion for success. Some of the drivers he worked closely with throughout the years included Tim Blanchard, James and Ben Small, Jack Perkins and more recently Lee Mitchener (pictured with Rob). For all of them, Rob was much more than just a guy who worked on their karts, he was a caring and understanding mentor who had time for anyone. “Rob was a life mentor, caring for anyone who would give him the time, offering words of advice from the experiences he had, and everyone took the advice due to the respect that so many people had for him,” said Mitchener in a recent tribute. Rob was diagnosed with leukemia just over one year ago. Father of Georgia and Ben, he passed away peacefully on August 7 surrounded by family. He was 50.

NEW TRACK NEW WINNERS THE Australian Kart Championship’s first visit to Emerald in Central Queensland proved to be a Championship changing affair for many of the categories. A new track that many competitors hadn’t raced on before delivered outstanding racing throughout the finals and all but one of the Championships presented by Jayco and Castrol EDGE will be decided this weekend. TWM Energy’s Joshua Fife started the penultimate round in the KZ2 category some four points ahead of early Championship leader, Ricciardo Kart’s Troy Loeskow, however his performance to win the final and three of four heats saw that lead extend to 28 points. He was separated from Loeskow in the final by CRG’s Pierce Lehane. Lehane won the third heat on Sunday morning with a second last corner pass on the young Canberra-based Fife. The elite Junior KA2 Championship lead has been cut to four points heading into this weekend’s final round to Todd Road. Coming into Sunday, a perfect score on Saturday by PFG Kosmic driver, Broc Feeney saw him open a slender lead on Ricciardo Kart’s Lochie Hughes. The KA2 final welcomed a new winner in Christian Pancione. The Victorian FA Kart pilot stormed through the field to win heat four, while Hughes gained three points on Feeney. KA1 welcomed a new Championship leader in Scuderia PCR’s Kyle Henry-Smith. The mechanical gremlin that befell Scott Sorensen in Saturday’s third heat was still an issue in Sunday morning’s final heat. In the final, the pair duked it out lap after lap, in a hectic early battle swapping the lead no less than six times during a two lap stoush. After Sorensen led for much of the race in his HDR Arrow kart, Henry-Smith pushed through to the
lead then sped to his second round win in succession by 0.4 seconds. A first time podium finisher in PFG Kosmic driver, Mathew Stenner was a just reward for a year of hard work. The race of the weekend and potentially of the year was the Cadet 9 Final. Up to seven karts had a chance at taking victory throughout the course of the 16-lap race and it wasn’t decided until the final moments. Championship leader, Harry Arnett, who won all but one heat race, emerged victorious. Reaching the podium for the first time was Maddison Feather – the Deadly Kart driver becoming the first female driver to reach the podium of the Cadet 9 category since its inclusion at a national level three years ago. James Sera staked his claim for yet another Australian Championship in KA3 Senior. He and Matthew McLean’s season long battle continued throughout the weekend. A tense final saw McLean lead for many of the 20 laps until Sera made the decisive move deep into the second half of the race. Whilst McLean fought valiantly to regain the lead, he could not get past the wily veteran. Joshua Rogers has kept the Australian TaG 125 Championship alive after a commanding victory on Sunday afternoon. Brendan Nelson had the chance to wrap the Championship up Sunday, but Rogers’ tenacity shone through and he took the lead from Kody Garland and once there, never looked like being headed. Rogers won from Garland and Cody Gillis with Joshua Car between them and Nelson. Velocity Kart Shop CompKart driver, Car was involved in one of the strongest battles of his career in X30. Since the first heat race on Saturday, Patrizicorse Ricciardo Kart driver Marc Tulloch had been on a tear – winning every

race up until the final. This enabled him to cut down the Championship lead held by Car. Tulloch quickly established a lead in the final to be followed by his Kiwi teammate Dylan Drysdale. But behind, Car went on one of the drives of his career to cut through the field and stage a battle with Drysdale forcing his way into second position. He was forced to redress a pass on Drysdale on the final lap due to yellow flags being on display. This saw Drysdale cross the line second, however due to an earlier race misdemeanour, he was dropped two places. This leaves just three points between Championship leader Car and Tulloch heading into this weekend. Kacey Mann was a first time winner in KA4 Junior. A three kart battle quickly
developed at the front of the pack that involved Championship aspirants Jay Hanson and defending Champion, Cooper Webster. The battle between the trio raged until the end of the 16-lap race with Hanson crossing the line first and Mann splitting he and Webster. A post-race protest by Webster dropped Hanson one place and handing a first round victory to Mann. James Wharton became the first Australian Karting Champion-elect of season 2017 with his dominance of Cadet 12. The Shamick Racing pilot wasn’t headed throughout the course of the weekend and took a two second victory in the final this afternoon to establish a lead that can’t be caught in Melbourne. Adrian Haak brought his EVOKart
home in second position in front of Fletcher Harris. The City of Emerald embraced the Australian Kart Championship, presented by Jayco and Castrol EDGE – with close to 1,000 visitors being brought to the town throughout the week leading up to this weekend’s racing. Mayor of Central Highlands Regional Council, Cr. Kerry Hayes and State Member for Gregory, Mr. Lachlan Millar were on hand throughout the day taking in the sights, colour and action of the Australian Kart Championship and on hand during the trophy presentations. Universally among competitors, the challenging 10 metre-wide track was praised for its racing options and the assistance and welcome provided by the host club.
