As Chairperson of Tradfest, I would like to welcome everyone to this historic City and to Tradfest 2020. Kilkenny Tradfest has grown into one of Ireland’s premier traditional music festival, picking up awards along the way. This year’s festival is crammed with some really wonderful music played by the best International, National and local artists in Irish music. As with previous years, we are keen to explore the living tradition, the stories behind the making of the music and to give you an opportunity to experience the pulse of the music through our various workshops and talks. This year we are delighted to push the diversity of the programme further with a heady mix of living legends, new and contemporary acts all embodying the essence of innovation in their craft. Sadly since our last outing, we lost two great friends to Tradfest; photographer, Pat Moore and flautist; Ciara McGrath. Both brought their own unique talent to the fore to help shape and promote the festival and we miss them both dearly. On behalf of our committee and our festival team, I hope that you and yours enjoy all Kilkenny has to offer over the weekend of our National feast day and that you leave with happy memories in your head and a song in your heart. Dubliner, singer song writer Barry McCormack has released seven critically acclaimed albums since leaving Dublin band ‘Jubilee Allstars’. RTÉ Culture has described him as ‘a proper Irish musical cult hero’ and his latest album Mean Time has been called ‘marvelously dark and funny/deadly serious’ by RTÉ. ie. The second half of the gig will see the return of box player John Fogarty and guitarist/singer songwriter John Hegarty who form a superb musical partnership which sees them taking a unique approach to old traditional Irish airs and song as well as performing original pieces as penned by Hegarty.

He passed it on to his sons, John & Pip, who are still playing the reels and hornpipes that he wrote including the Ballygow Reel and Trip to Cullenstown. Like their father, they have played all over the world and we are delighted to welcome them as part of the programme this year. Following the Murphy’s are Tommy Fitzharris (flute), Donal McCague (fiddle) & Brian McGrath (banjo). Multi-instrumentalist Tommy Fitzharris, hails from Stradbally, Co Laois, and has been playing traditional Irish Music since the age of seven and is self-taught on the flute, concertina and whistle. Described by Matt Molloy as “a remarkable musician”, Dónal McCague from Co. Monaghan was awarded TG4 Young Musician of the Year in 2013. Dónal is well known for his vibrant, fresh and unique style. Joined by Brian McGrath from Co.Fermanagh, whose first professional work was with Dervish. He has toured extensively, playing with all the biggest names in Irish traditional music, including Dé Danann, Frankie Gavin, John Carty, Matt Molloy, Arty McGlynn, Dolores Keane, Steve Cooney and Eleanor Shanley. 8

4.30PM | MEDIEVAL MILE MUSEUM | FREE NO BOOKING REQUIRED This is a unique opportunity during TradFest to hear some stunning traditional music in two of Kilkenny County Council’s most recently conserved historic buildings. The Medieval Mile Museum project, managed by Kilkenny Civic Trust, combined sensitive restoration and contemporary design to an exemplary standard. Evans’ Home is the latest addition to Kilkenny’s medieval experience in Kilkenny’s Cultural Quarter. Located just off Johns’ Quay on the east side of the river Nore , it is rich in archaeological & built heritage and has been largely hidden from view until now. In addition to the refurbishment of the historic building itself the development delivers a significant new area of public open spaces. The eagerly awaited finished building will be the new home for ‘The Butler Gallery’, currently located at Kilkenny Castle. As well as music, there will be information sessions taking place throughout the day which will chart the progress of the project from design to completion. The Evans’ Home project is funded by Kilkenny County Council with the support of the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and Fáilte Ireland.
