OFFICE AND APARTMENT BUILDING
YEAR: 2021
TYPE: University Project | 6th Semester
TEAM: Fiona Yu (Architecture), Matthew Tamarua (Building Science)
ROLES/RESPONSABILITIES: Commercial Construction Drawings
SOFTWARE: Revit
TASK: The task was to design and document the structural framework, the core construction and the facade of a multistory mixed-use building on an existing site in Wellington, New Zealand. The building needed to include shops, offices, apartments and underground parking as well.
APPROACH: The design phase of the project was a collaborative work within the team, where we researched and made design decisions together, taking into cosideration each other's professional area. In the documentation phase we divided the work into three areas where we all worked individually. Matthew Tamarua made the project management documentation as his professional area, Fiona Yu documented the office floors of the building, and I prepared all the construction drawings for the apartment levels as well as the 3D model of the entire building. Thus, every drawing represented in this portfolio is my individual work.

33 m2 MULTIFUNTIONAL FAMILY HOME
YEAR: 2022
TYPE: Freelance Work
TEAM: Individual Project
ROLES/RESPONSABILITIES: Architect, Interior Architect, Project Manager
SOFTWARE: Sketchup, V-Ray
TASK: The task was to design and project manage the build of a 33 m2 multifunctional family home, fulfilling every functional and atmospheric requirement.
APPROACH: The design took a warm, natural and minimalist approach with high attention to detail and practicality. The layout was carefully planned in order to accomodate a kitchen/dining, a livingroom, a bathroom, a bedroom, two small offices and a designated entry area, all in a spacious and comfortable arrangement. I worked very closely with contractors in order to find unique and creative solutions to fit everything into the house and ensure beauty as well as ease of use. I also custom designed each piece of furniture (apart from the two office chairs) to make sure that the function and storage is maximised throughout. The house is mostly finished, only some decor pieces and bar chairs are still under manufacturing.

FALE MALAE CULTURAL CENTRE
YEAR: 2021
TYPE: University Project | 6th Semester
TEAM: Individual Project
ROLES/RESPONSABILITIES: Conceptual Design
SOFTWARE: Revit
TASK: The task was to design a Fale Malae, a meeting space for Pasifika people, for an allocated site on Wellington's waterfront. We were challenged to design the Fale Malae from concrete, as the main structural system and as an expressive material.
APPROACH: The proposed design draws its inspiration from the ocean, as the surrounding and connecting element of the Pacific Islands, and as the main respresentative for Pasifika people. Thus, the sculptural roof form is made from concrete based on Felix Candela's thin shell structures and aims to mimic the waves of the ocean. The interior surface of the roof showcases arts, legends and symbols of Pasifika people, which are carved into the timber molds used for casting the concrete shell. The building's layout aims to follow the spatial arrangement of the traditional Samoan fale, which is elevated from the ground, and welcomes visitors from the sea side while the hosts enter on the land side.

SUBURBAN LIBRARY IN KHANDALLAH
YEAR: 2020
TYPE: University Project | 4th Semester
TEAM: Individual Project
ROLES/RESPONSABILITIES: Conceptual Design, Physical Interior Model
SOFTWARE: Adobe Illustrator
TASK: The task was to redesign the existing library in Khandallah, a suburb of Wellington, New Zealand. The conceptual design needed to be presented through linework drawings.
APPROACH: The proposed design draws its inspiration from the small scale atmospheric shops along the street and aims to pick up their rythm in a playful way. The multi-layered, subtly curved form of the floating roof vivaciouly chases the canopy roofline along the street. The building follows the boundary of the shops next door, creating a connection to the cafe as well as a srong street presence through opening up to the street by the use of windows/glass walls. The ultimate aim was to design a warm and welcoming space which feels less like a big, brusque public institution, and more like a home, where people come to rest, play, and unwind after work, or focus and get some work done in a dedicated space.

TASK: As the Tapu Te Ranga Marae, a major Maori village burned down in the Wellington region in 2019, our task was to design a Whare on the the village's space, a house where the indigenous people can gather, study, and generate income in order to build back their village again.
APPROACH: As the native people of New Zeland live in strong relationship with nature as well as they also value innovation, the proposed design aims to use timber as a natural material, and an innovative recyclable Japanese PVS mesh material, which provides insulation and allows a close connection to nature. The organically shaped roof hosts vegetation on top, and ensures that the building blends seamlessly into nature. The lowest level of the building contains a kitchen and a dining area, the middle level consists of multiple study spaces, while the top level being closest to the sreet, houses a cafe shop and a covered outdoor market place for income generation.
