Why Respite Planning Should Start Before Families Feel Overwhelmed

Respite is often considered only when a family is already stretched, tired or managing an unexpected change. By then, there may be less time to think carefully about the participant’s routines, preferences and comfort with a new carer. Planning earlier gives families more space to explore suitable options and introduce support gradually. It can also help respite become part of an ongoing routine rather than something arranged only during difficult periods. For some families, this may include flexible short term respite through shorter stays, occasional overnight support or planned weekends that suit the participant and family. Starting the conversation early can make the process feel more considered, familiar and manageable for everyone involved.
