CATHERINE BRODIE

Catherine Brodie has a B.S. and an M.A in musiceducation from Eastern Michigan University. She served as a graduate conductor for Emily Lowe and the EMU Madrigal Singers.

She taught at Eastern Michigan University for 20 years in music education and recently retired from there in 2016. She retired from Monroe public schools with 25 years of service in music education. She is also currently the choral conductor of Monroe County Community College Agora Chorale and MCCC Prelude, a children’s choir. Mrs. Brodie is an Emeritus member of (MSVMA) Michigan School Vocal Music Association where she served as District Manager, Honors Choir Supervisor, State Solo and Ensemble Supervisor, Sight reading and Repertoire chair, and the Adjudication committee. She is the secretary for (ACDA) the American Choral Director’s Association Michigan. Catherine has directed several State Honor’s Choirs. Her choirs have also been invited to sing on MSVMA and ACDA-MI Conference programs. In 1997 Catherine was chosen by the Michigan Music Teachers Association as teacher of the year for her work in Elementary Music Education. She was also selected as teacher of the year in 2005 by MSVMA. She is a member of the John Tyner Chorale, and St. Paul’s Methodist Chancel Choir.

She directs the St. Paul’s United Methodist bell choir. Catherine and her husband Bill have three sons; Matthew, Andrew and Brian and three grandsons: Liam, Aidan and Caleb

ALYCE SANGSTER

Alyce Sangster, accompanist, holds a Bachelor of Music Education (piano) from Brigham Young University. She accompanies her church choir, has taught piano privately for years throughout Washtenaw County and currently works as classroom accompanist for Lincoln High School. Alyce is frequently called upon to accompany school and university solo recitals and for MSVMA festivals and college auditions. Alyce has accompanied MCCC Agora Chorale for six years.

She has accompanied Carillon Women’s Chorale for over ten years and was often called upon to accompany Karen’s Lincoln High School students for concerts and MSVMA festival events. Alyce has accompanied the Lenawee Community Chorus and the Monroe RRCC Children’s Chorus. Alyce and her husband, Walter, raised their family in their Ypsilanti home where they reside today.

MCCC AGORA CHORALE

MCCC Agora Chorale has a long tradition in Monroe that goes back over 50 years to the start of the college. Past conductors include Bob Merkle, Sharon Metz, Elaine Rugila, and John Tyner. Under Mrs. Brodie’s baton the choir has been involved in the Bicentennial Concert in honor of the War of 1812. They have also performed in “Late Night Catechism” in the Meyer Theatre. Many of the Women of Agora Chorale also sang as the nun’s in a Monroe Community Players presentation of “The Sound of Music. MCCC Agora Chorale has had the honor of performing with Carillon Women’s Chorale, The John Tyner Chorale, Chiaroscuro Men’s Chorale, and the Eastern Michigan University Choir. Agora Chorale is a perfect blend of town and gown singers who range in age from 16 to 80.

KAREN S. NEVINS

Karen S. Nevins, founding director of the Carillon Women’s Chorale, holds two degrees from Eastern Michigan University (EMU). Karen retired in 2013 after teaching K-12 and high school choral music and piano for 20 years in the public schools. She also served as mentor and co-operative teacher to many EMU and UM student teachers. She has taught voice and piano at the college level several years and in her home studio since 1984. She is currently teaching voice at Dearborn High School and serves as Music Director for the Light of Christ Catholic Parish. An active MSVMA adjudicator/ clinician since 1992, Karen has served MSVMA in multiple leadership and festival hosting roles.

In addition to conducting the 2008 MSVMA State SSAA Honors Choir, Karen was voted to the final ballot for MSVMA 2012 Teacher of the Year. In retirement, she was honored to receive the 2015 MSVMA Emeritus Membership award. Karen was guest conductor of the 2008 and 2014 Lenawee Fine Arts Festival high school honor choirs. She also conducted the 2012 University of Toledo H.S. Honor Choir.

An active member of American Choral Director’s Association (ACDA) since 1992, Karen recently received the 2016 Maynard Klein Award for her contribution to choral music in Michigan and her years of service on the ACDA-­Michigan executive board since 1999. A member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) since 1992, Karen served four years as NATS-­Michigan Treasurer. She has been recognized in numerous professional “Who’s Who” publications. Karen and her husband, Ken, enjoy memorable moments in their historic Blissfield home with their three married children and ten beautiful grandchildren.

CARILLON WOMEN'S CHORALE

Carillon Women’s Chorale was founded in 2001 in preparation for Karen Nevins’ Eastern Master Recital, which featured music composed for the young female musicians in the 18th century Venetian Ospedali della Pieta. Now celebrating their 15th year, Carillon has aspired to a high standard of excellence with a focus on music composed for women and often by women composers. Carillon members come from all walks of life and all professions to include some professional singers/music teachers. For their expressive singing and mature tone, Carillon was one of 7 Michigan choirs selected by blind audition to perform in the 2015 ACDA-­Michigan State Conference. Over the years, Carillon has toured to perform throughout Michigan, in the Sydney Opera House (Australia) and at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall (NYC). Since 2012 Carillon has enjoyed multiple collaborations with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra (A2SO). On May 7, 2017, Carillon will enjoy their fourth A2SO performance of Verdi Opera Chorus Highlights in Hill Auditorium, Ann Arbor. On April 17, 2017, Carillon will perform under the baton of Dr. Andrea Ramsey in Carnegie Hall, NYC. Over the years, Carillon has hosted performances with select high school women’s ensembles and seasonally with Chiaroscuro Men’s Chorus since their founding in 2013. Carillon Women have also collaborated with the Livingston County Women’s Chorus, VocaLyrica, Trillium, Lenawee Community Chorus, MCCC Agora Chorale and RRCC Children’s Chorus.

Carillon has enjoyed three ACDA-­Michigan inter-­generational Women’s Choral Festivals. Having recently acquired their 501(c)3 non-­profit status, all donations to Carillon are greatly appreciated and tax deductible.
