An educator, teacher-trainer, and school leader, Karen Kuse brings more than 37 years of experience in Montessori pedagogy and independent schools. She makes her home in Santa Barbara, California, and over nearly four decades she has helped schools navigate growth, transformation, and renewal. On July 1, 2026, Karen Kuse began serving as Interim Head of School at the Montessori Center School in Goleta, California, the latest chapter in a career defined by community building, campus transformation, strategic planning, and faculty development. Karen Kuse's professional preparation is rooted in Montessori certifications in Lower and Upper Elementary education, complemented by a certification in School Management. She earned her Elementary I and II Teaching Certificate from the American Montessori Society through Barry University in 1996. In 2006 she completed her School Management Certification through the American Montessori Society's Center for Montessori Teacher Education in New Rochelle, New York, and in the same year finished the Foundations of Leadership program at the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, North Carolina. Her degrees come from Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida, where she completed a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts and Sciences in 1994 and a Master of Science in Elementary Education in 1996. Karen Kuse's classroom career opened at St. Christopher's Montessori School in Key Biscayne, Florida. From 1995 to 2000, she launched the school's first lower elementary class and oversaw the design and construction of a permanent building for the elementary program. Karen Kuse is best known for her thirteen-year run as Head of School at the Montessori School of Columbia in Columbia, South Carolina, from 2010 to 2023. In that period she tripled school enrollment and grew a single small building into a four-acre urban campus with seven buildings, negotiating the purchase of eight adjacent properties along the way.
