6th Grade at LuHi A Unique, Supportive Environment
A Unique Approach 6th grade at LuHi benefits from being part of a full middle and high school, but allows for a close-knit, contained experience. 6th grade... 1. Bridges the gap between a self-contained 5th grade classroom to the middle school departmentalized experience. 2. Is centered around classroom hubs which are more contained than 7th-8th grade. 3. Instruction in the core curriculum fits into 2 daily blocks with flexibility (English/Social Studies and Math/Science). 4. Has two dedicated teachers, solely focused on 6th grade. 5. Has a separate lunch period consisting of 6th and 7th graders, only. 6. Includes the opportunity to connect with peers and teachers through weekly class meetings.
Individualized Support Dedicated teachers ● ●
Two teachers work collaboratively to support student growth and development in the core content areas. Small class sizes allow 6th grade teachers to get to know each student, learning and supporting individual strengths and growth opportunities, academically, spiritually, and socially.
Dedicated Middle School Guidance Counselor ● ●
Students have access to a supportive, experienced guidance counselor who supports students through the middle school transition. Fun events aimed at preparing for the future - for example, each 6th grader participates in an annual college day, aimed at learning more about exciting colleges and universities!

Religion Highlights of 6th grade Religion: ● Fall in-school retreat focuses on team-building and spiritual growth ● Attendance and participation at weekly chapel services ● Religion classes alternate with Physical Education class 6th grade Religion class focuses on: ● Getting to know my neighbor ● Getting to know my God
World Language Highlights of 6th grade World Language: ● 1 semester each of French and Spanish ● Focused on thematic, experiential learning units based in language and culture, specifically art, dance, music, and food ● Pass/Fail course without tests allows students to thrive in a low-anxiety environment ● Features project-based learning ● Supports students in selecting a language focus beginning in 7th grade
Math and Writing Labs Extra support: ● Targeted enrichment and remediation ● Skill application directly connected to classroom learning ● Extension of the 6th grade block ● Students attend both each week
Middle School Exploratory Program What is Exploratory? ● Open to all middle school students ● Combined classes extending from 6th-8th grade ● Operates in 5 week cycles ● Time to engage in hobbies & interests, sports, service, and extra academic & social support ● Offerings change regularly, and have included: Legos, Speedball, Christmas Spectacular, Library, opportunities for MS sports teams, etc.
