2017 TABLESCAPE S PROGRAM

Over the past 23 years, over $2.8 million has been raised to benefit over 95 local nonprofits in addition to the national Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation. These organizations range in scope but all hold the common mission of meeting critical needs in our community.

Tablescapes has given grants to agencies that help the elderly, the homeless, at-risk children, women escaping domestic violence, special needs individuals, inner-city schools and programs at many of Dallas’ hospitals.

Each year’s beneficiaries have been nominated, researched, and carefully selected by the Dallas Alumnae Association of Kappa Kappa Gamma. The Tablescapes Philanthropy Committee thoughtfully and thoroughly researches each non-profit grant request to determine how to allocate the funds raised at Tablescapes. Thanks to the generous underwriters and corporate sponsors, hard-working committee members, wonderful volunteers, and fabulous designers, our beneficiaries receive 100% of the net proceeds from Tablescapes 2017.

Mark D. Sikes

Mark D. Sikes is an esteemed interior designer working on projects throughout the United States. He is known for creating beautiful and timeless interiors that embody an indoor/outdoor lifestyle. Mark has a talent for mixing American and European, traditional and modern, and new and old sensibilities.

Mark’s work has been widely celebrated for the rooms he designed at the Kips Bay Show House in New York and the Grand Garden Halls at Greystone in Beverly Hills. This summer, Mark opened the Holiday House Hotel in Palm Springs and designed the 25th Anniversary Coastal Living Showhouse in Newport. He is currently working on Nancy Meyer’s home in Pacific Pallisades and Reese Witherspoon’s home in Nashville.

In 2016, Mark released his first book – Beautiful, All American Decorating and

Timeless Style – which quickly made the New York Times Best Seller List. The Director Nancy Meyers wrote in the book’s forward, “This is a book that shows design lovers how classic can look fresh, how style and comfort go hand in hand.”

Whether you’re hosting an afternoon shower for a special occasion or just a summer supper for family and friends, Lolli and Me has you covered with some general planning tips to create exceptional memories for your guests. You can find the complete list at weddingcollective.com/2017/hostess-countdown. Here are just a few of their best tips: 2-3 WEEKS OUT: • Personalize whatever you can for that particular occasion!

Order monogrammed cocktail napkins or hand towels by the sink in your powder room to add a memorable touch.

It shows forethought and intentionality. One of our favorite signatures for a baby or bridal shower is monogrammed floral wreaths on the door to greet guests. This offers a great first impression.

• Think about your menu! Having a “theme” can help: Tex-Mex fiesta, Southern supper, Italian night, finger foods, “sugar and spice”or build around whatever your go-to specialty may be! We love throwing together a lavish cheese tray to greet guests. It’s beautiful for any occasion and is something people feel comfortable nibbling on right away.

1 WEEK OUT: • Follow up on RSVPs to get an accurate headcount if a large number of guests have not yet responded. If you are hosting a more intimate group for a sit-down dinner, always use place cards to ensure a flowing conversation. Guests enjoy being directed where to sit, and you have the opportunity to think through arranging seating so that everyone has the best time!

• Communicate with the guests of honor to let them know how excited you are to celebrate them next week. This is a good time for them to tell you of any relevant RSVP responses they have personally received.

DAY BEFORE: • Confirm schedule for the event with any co-hostesses and vendors. Remind them of the window during which you prefer they arrive to set up.

• Run the majority of your errands for the event today rather than waiting until the last minute. Check that list off!

• Set your table and lay out serve ware. Doing this step ahead of time makes the day of your event run so much more smoothly!

DAY OF: • Get yourself ready first thing, so you do not feel like you’re scrambling to put on mascara or choose an outfit as guests are arriving!

• Be relaxed! The hostess sets the tone for the event, and if you are stressed, others will feel it. Your hard work has paid off, so now just do your best to smile, and HAVE FUN (while, of course, remaining attentive to your guests)!

PLATINUM KEY HONOREE

Pat Dean Boswell McCall is a fourth generation Texan, who was born in the downtown Dallas Baylor Hospital of which her great-grandfather, Col. C. C. Slaughter, was one of the three founders. Pat grew up in Fort Worth, graduated from Arlington Heights High School and attended SMU where in 1955 she was initiated into our Gamma Phi chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma. She graduated from college with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Speech Therapy.

Pat McCall

Pat met her future husband, Bruce Boswell, while making her debut in Fort Worth. They married and lived in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii for three years where he was a Supply Officer in the Navy. They returned to Fort Worth where they started their family and Bruce started their family business, Boswell Interest, Ltd., in which Pat still maintains her position as Secretary Treasurer. While living in Fort Worth, Pat was an active member of the Junior League, the Jewel Charity, the Fort Worth Garden Club, the Fort Worth Woman’s Club, and the Junior Woman’s Club (of which she was President). In addition, she served in the Chaplaincy program of the Tarrant County John Peter Smith Hospital District, as well as the Administrative Board of the First United Methodist Church. With the above activities, Pat still found time to earn her pilot’s license with her husband Bruce. They were married almost 30 years until his unexpected death in 1987.

Since her graduation Pat has been a loyal, active, and supportive Kappa. She has served in virtually every leadership role including an advisor to our chapters at both TCU and SMU, as well as President of the Fort Worth Alumnae Association. She received the Camilla Beall Outstanding Fort Worth Alumnae Award in 1991. Pat attends Klassic Kappas events in Fort Worth for members initiated 40 years or more. Pat has been a generous supporter of Tablescapes since its beginning in both Dallas and Fort Worth. She has blue and blue running up, down and across her family. Pat’s mother was a Kappa, in addition to two of her daughters, two of her granddaughters, a daughter-in-law, a sister-in-law, a niece, and lots of cousins. In 2020 she will receive her 65 year pin!!

Pat met her darling husband Clyde McCall on a blind date arranged by close friends; Clyde was a widower whose wife, Dodie, had died the same year as Bruce. The two celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary this past September.

Clyde is a graduate of Washington and Lee University then received his Petroleum Engineering degree from the University of Texas at Austin.

He started Cenesia Petroleum Corporation and serves as its President. Pat and Clyde have six children and eleven grandchildren between them, including two sets of grandtwins. They are staunch supporters of their family and have very rarely missed any of the games, school or church activities of their children or grandchildren.

Here in Dallas, Pat is active in the Dallas Woman’s Club, the Dallas Garden Club, the Louise B. Belsterling Foundation and the Mary K. Craig Class. Also she is a member of DAR, DRT and Colonial Dames. Pat is a former President of the Texas Committee of the National Museum of the Women in the Arts and currently serves on its National Advisory Board. She has also served on the board of the Dallas Historical Society, co-chaired the 2004 Awards for Excellence, as well as having been an honorary chair with Clyde for one of its luncheons. She and Clyde are on the SMU President’s Associates and the TCU and Texas Tech Chancellors Councils.

Pat is on the Foundation Board of Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association. She has also served on the Baylor University Hospital Foundation Board and the hospital’s Celebrating Women Advisory Committee for the benefit of Breast Cancer Research since its inception eighteen years ago. Pat is currently serving as Secretary of the board of Texas Independent Producers and Royalty Owners Association (TIPRO). In 2004 she received the esteemed “Mr. TIPRO” award for her tireless and enthusiastic leadership. Pat is very proud of another honor that the family received in 2008 when Aledo, Texas opened the new McCall Elementary School that bears her name. Pat and Clyde attend Highland Park United Methodist Church.

After a thorough vetting process, the Dallas Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumnae Philanthropy Committee voted to fund eight incredible Dallas County agencies.

Kappa Tablescapes has pledged to gift $150,000 to these worthy charities as well as to our National Foundation.

KAPPA KAPPA GAMMA FOUNDATION

Mission:

The mission of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation is to support the lifetime development of women through the funding of educational programs, financial assistance, and preservation of Kappa heritage.

The Foundation’s goal is to help women attain their fullest potential by providing the funds necessary to power programs that give Kappa members opportunities for lifelong learning.

Funds support the intergenerational Leadership Academy, raise awareness and funds for the “Not Anymore” sexual assault awareness program, maintain funding for Girls Academy and much more. Additionally, the KKG Foundation provided 295 scholarships to deserving young women this past year; 56% of Kappas who completed an application received a scholarship.

Ten percent of Tablescapes proceeds benefit the KKG Foundation.

AKOLA PROJECT

Mission:

Akola’s mission is to empower women to become agents of transformation in their families and communities through economic development.

In 2004, Brittany Underwood was moved to compassion as a sophomore in college after meeting a Ugandan woman named Sarah who cared for 24 street children in her home. Compassion escalated to action as Brittany founded a nonprofit to construct an orphanage to house children who slept on Sarah’s floor. After completing the orphanage, Brittany discovered that by training and employing women and guaranteeing them an income we could care for thousands of children, without the construction of an orphanage home. Brittany launched a new sustainable model to uplift women and children. The women named it “Akola”, which means “to work.” The Akola Project has blossomed into a thriving social business that empowers women across the globe. The hope of Akola is to encourage new thinking about international development and to inspire the next generation of social innovators to deliver the highest level of impact in disadvantaged communities.

Mission:

The mission of Camp Summit is to provide barrier-free outdoor experiences that promote personal growth and foster independence for children and adults with disabilities.

Camp Summit provides a unique sleep-away camping program in a fully accessible, barrier-free camp for individuals with a wide variety of disabilities ranging from mild to severe.

Programs focus on abilities rather than disabilities and provide a comprehensive camping experience regardless of the camper’s disability. Campers who attend grow in confidence and develop critical social skills through their experience at Camp Summit. This cost of raising a disabled child well into adulthood is far greater than raising a non-disabled child. Funds from Kappa Tablescapes help decrease the financial barriers to attend camp faced by this special population.

Mission:

DCAC’s mission is to improve the lives of abused children in Dallas County and to provide national leadership on child abuse issues.

DCAC serves Dallas County’s most severely abused children.

Many families who arrive at DCAC must leave their homes to escape their abusers, leaving personal items and clothing behind in their flight to safety. DCAC supports these brave victims by providing daily essentials to support their fresh start. Kappa funds will help bring healing to these children through the work of its Therapy Program. Funds will also fund Forensic Interviews which are legally defensible and give child victims of heinous abuse a voice to speak out against their abusers.

Mission:

Seniors’ Pet Assistance Network’s mission is to help Dallas County low-income seniors sustain their companion animals by providing basic veterinary care and pet food.

The Seniors Pet Assistance Network (SPAN) serves the needs of Dallas County low-income seniors, 67 years and older, with basic veterinary care and pet food. SPAN provides financial assistance for pet care including annual shots, preventive heart worm and flea medication. Other veterinary services are considered on a case by case basis. SPAN serves as a volunteer resource to numerous Dallas-area senior organizations and strives to improve the quality of life for seniors’ pets.

TOWN NORTH YMCA

Mission:

The mission of YMCA Safety Around Water (SAW) is to bring safe swimming skills to lowincome apartment communities in the Dallas area by providing access to water safety and lessons the YMCA offers on site.

Many times children are left unsupervised in apartment complexes around swimming pools, and research shows that there is a high population of immigrant families in Dallas living in these complexes with children who do not know how to swim. Using apartment community pools, our staff actively engage and teach children from area complexes to swim at no cost. At the Y, we believe that safe swimming saves lives and that all children should be equipped with the skills to help them safely enjoy the water. Our Safety Around Water program is one of the many ways we help to make time in and around the water both fun and safe.

Mission:

The VNA/Meals on Wheels mission is to provide nutritious hot home delivered meals to the “hidden hungry” homebound and aging who, due to illness, advanced age or disability, are unable to provide or prepare their own meals.

VNA Meals on Wheels provides hot, nutritious, freshly prepared meals five days a week to Dallas County residents who can’t provide for themselves due to illness, advanced age or disability. These meals contribute to the overall health and well-being of participating seniors, including those with chronic illnesses that are affected by diet, such as diabetes and heart disease, and frail seniors who are homebound. Without VNA Meals on Wheels these seniors would go hungry.

ANSWER: I think that layering and dimension are keys to a beautiful tablescape. This is as easily done with inexpensive items as with costly goods.

I love to take a wide ribbon or piece of fabric and use it for a table runner. All of my chargers are from Target or World Market and no one is the wiser. Add seasonal flowers, fruits, or other items and, of course, candles. Voila! I only glance at trends when it comes to holiday décor. I think you should decorate for the holidays, and your home for that matter, in the colors that make you happy. I like my tree and other décor to enhance my home not compete with it. However, I love Nutcrackers, so I do use them every year. I have amassed a huge collection of ornaments and other holiday items over the years, so I have a good selection to choose from. Here, I also apply my layering rule. More is more, in the words of Tony Duquette! My family loves the traditional red and green décor, but I lean more to the metallic: silver and gold. I LOVED the fuchsia and turquoise theme I created one year, and believe it or not, my girls revolted! So funny to me with the pops of pink we have in our home year-round.

ART and the Brain

Creative activities heal, inspire, and validate us. They will often transform our perception of the world. Recent medical journals report that adults who exercise their artistic muscles are 73% less likely to develop memory problems than those who do not take part in artistic activities. Recent studies even suggest that creative and artistic activities help prevent the development of dementia.

Armed with multiple degrees in Museum Science, Anthropology, Communications and Marriage and Family Therapy, Lake Highlands Kappa sisters, Molly Noah (Tulsa) and Emily Noah Lee (A&M) encouraged and supported their artist mother, Michelle Noah, as she brought her creative talents together in a meaningful way to birth CURRENT Artist Workshop and Art Gallery in downtown Garland.

In opening the space at CURRENT, Michelle’s two main goals were to create and sell her works of original art and equip adults and children with both classic and new art techniques. While Michelle composes original works of art, individuals come together at the studio to learn, munch, sip, chat, and be free to create together in community. Artists, makers, and creators work together and individually to explore the relationship between color, emotion and energy … and help ward off memory loss in the process.

Michelle is a wife, mother, commissioned artist, talented painter, book illustrator, and art teacher, but her work at CURRENT brings all levels of art together with the support from her two Kappa daughters who serve as social media and website gurus. “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life,” Pablo Picasso once famously proclaimed. If art is not washing away the dust accumulating on your soul, it might be cleansing your brain instead.
