Dear Friends,
Resilience has always been at the heart of Kanuga. This past year, that resilience was tested in ways we never imagined. When Hurricane Helene swept through, leaving its mark on this sacred place, we faced the challenge together—with determination, faith, and the unwavering support of this incredible community.
In the wake of the storm, I witnessed something extraordinary: the Kanuga Spirit, alive in every helping hand, every act of generosity, and every commitment to rebuilding not just the structures, but the experiences and memories that make this place home for so many. It is because of you—your stewardship, your presence, your love for this mission—that Kanuga stands strong today.
This year, we have much to celebrate. Thanks to your generosity, annual giving has increased by an astounding 75 percent over the previous year. Even more remarkable, despite over $400,000 in lost revenue from the hurricane, Kanuga ended 2024 with a small surplus—a true testament to the dedication, faith, and generosity of this community. That, in itself, feels like a miracle. Your gifts sustain our programs, strengthen our commitment to hospitality, and allow us to be responsible stewards of this land we cherish.
As I walk these grounds—past cabins where laughter still echoes, along trails where generations have found peace, and into sacred spaces where prayers continue to rise— I am reminded that Kanuga is more than a place. It is a living testament to the people who have shaped it, those who sustain it now, and those who will be called here in the years ahead.
To each of you who walks this journey with us, whether through giving, visiting, or simply holding Kanuga in your heart, I offer my deepest gratitude. Because of you, we continue the work we are called to do. Because of you, Kanuga endures.
We seek a world of good by providing programs that transform and nourish the soul for work beyond Kanuga.
We honor the image of God in every person and offer radical hospitality to all guests while striving for a work environment that supports staff with living wages and quality benefits.
We treasure God’s gift of creation and commit to using sustainable models that have the least impact on our land and resources.
We give generously while using our inheritance wisely, utilizing our resources responsibly so that Kanuga is preserved for future generations.
Kanuga is a gathering place inviting all people to connect with each other, nature, and the Creator.
To inspire a more mindful and compassionate world

Kanuga has always bounced back, by God’s grace. This holy place has been a refuge, a place of respite and renewal for almost 100 years. With God’s help, nothing will stop us from preserving the legacy of that mission.
While Kanuga has recovered, with thanks to many, there are still western North Carolina families who are without homes and some without family members. We were grateful to co-host a summit this fall for community leaders to chart a path toward healing and recovery.
Written in early December, this is an accounting of the storm from staff on campus that day.
“I’ve lived in Henderson County my entire life. We’ve seen tropical storms and a couple of weak hurricanes come through, but nothing like this. The rain was torrential and wouldn’t let up.”
Read the story as told by Kanuga staff.

— NEW GATE INSTALLED AT CAMP — Made possible by the Jones Family
Former and current Camp Kanuga staff joined together to celebrate the new entrance gate installation. The coded entry provides a meaningful security improvement. “Camp Kanuga is committed to fostering an environment of connection to creation, the Creator, and the community for all campers and staff who arrive through this gate, then depart to serve,” said Executive Vice President for Engagement Jimmy Haden.
“Kyle, Bradley, and I would like to thank all who attended the special event at Camp Kanuga as we celebrated the Jones Gate Rededication in memory of Dr. Don Jones. We are pleased to honor him by installing the automation device and adding improvements to the original gate that our family gave in 1999. May all who enter these gates know the security of God’s love.”—Pat Jones and the Jones family

U Kanuga Lake dam underwent temporary repairs to the spillway and system, with thanks to Property Director Glenn Griffith and the facilities crew (prior to the arrival of Helene!). Some interesting items were discovered in the lakebed!
U After the storm, many repairs ensued, including fixing cottage roofs and removing debris; work is still underway at the Pavilion.
U Thanks to a donation from Steve Salley, new benches were installed at St. Francis Chapel
U We are especially grateful for the help of Tom Rowland, who brought work crews to Kanuga almost immediately to open up roads and remove debris from the grounds. These folks literally made it possible for Kanuga to re-open as soon as we did.
“A n Evening for All Souls: Gathering for Grief & Gratitude” brought more than 200 to Kanuga in October. With families reeling from the Helene disaster, Kanuga created a space for healing, with music, a hot meal, and a candlelit lakeside service.
In 2005, when Ted Brown and Kathy Horton-Brown bought 7.7 sloping acres adjacent to Kanuga, they planned to build a cabin. They also knew that, since part of the land includes a section of High Rocks Trail, the property could aid in protecting Kanuga’s use of the whole trail.
“It was our intention from the start that ultimately the property would go to Kanuga, and we put that in our wills. We never built a cabin because I was active on the Kanuga board (12 years total, including six of those years and a seventh as the corporate secretary), and I always said that I would rather stay at Kanuga than in a cabin next to it,” said Kathy.
The land was officially donated to Kanuga in 2023. Kanuga President & CEO Michael Sullivan expressed his gratitude, saying, “We are so grateful to Kathy and Ted for their generous gift of land to Kanuga. From the start, they saw this property as something that could help protect and enhance Kanuga’s trails and natural beauty, and now their vision has become a reality. Their kindness and commitment will be a lasting gift to everyone who finds peace and renewal in this special place.” —
When Bettye Wall was age 87, she told Kanuga staff, “I want to be around a long time, but every night when I go to sleep, I think that if I do not wake, Kanuga will receive some money and that makes me happy.”
Bettye’s gift represented a percentage of her estate, and while initially designated for a specific program, she revised her plan to support Kanuga in whatever ways became most important.

Agrarian Ministry of The Episcopal Church and St. John in the Wilderness, Flat Rock lend green thumbs to Foster Garden
The mission of the Good News Gardens movement, led by the Agrarian Ministries of The Episcopal Church, is to partner with people in transformational agrarian ministry that feeds body, mind, and spirit.
Good News Gardens is a church-wide movement involved in a variety of food and creation care ministries—gardening, farming, beekeeping, composting, gleaning, feeding, food justice advocacy.
Kanuga’s Foster Educational Garden remains a key site for St. John in the Wilderness, Flat Rock as the parish focuses on building a Good News Gardens presence.
In 2024, Agrarian Ministries of The Episcopal Church held its Field Days gathering at Kanuga. “Kanuga is a great place to encounter the fullness of God’s creation” said Brian Sellers Petersen, coordinator of Good News Gardens for The Episcopal Church.

With appreciation to the Michal Family
The Pat Michal Pollinator Garden, nestled beneath the Buddy Carter climbing tower near Pinky Elliott Field, began as a dream of Mary Kait Brown, Kanuga’s environmental programs manager, in 2023. The Michal family saw the vision and decided to celebrate Pat’s tremedous legacy at Kanuga by making the garden a reality. Be sure to visit this special space!

Rhythm. We find it everywhere at Kanuga, from the harmonious sequence of the cycles of life to the turning of the seasons. We find it in the steady heartbeat of Kanuga’s people as we connect with each other, nature, and the
Creator through programs, camps, guest retreats, and conferences. It’s here in the natural habitats of our gardens, creeks, and trails. It’s in the hatching of tadpoles, the vegetable harvest, the raindrops on our cottage roof, the music

the moon and stars. The people of Kanuga—you— are its heartbeat and life’s blood. You are its pulse, its body, its very existence. Your love and support keep the rhythm steady and the pattern sustaining. Thank you U ♥
Unquestionably, Kanuga’s 2024 word of the year was ‘resilience.’ The first nine months of the year were some of the best we’ve seen together in recent memory. Feedback from conference participants, camp families, and summer guests was overwhelmingly positive; support for the annual fund was trending higher than we’ve seen since 2020; and plans to overhaul our outdoor education programs were crystallizing.
Then Helene came at the end of September. Initially, we thought Kanuga would be closed for months while we cleaned up extensive damage and downed trees. But the Kanuga family rallied to provide philanthropic support and work crews to assist with tree removal, which enabled Kanuga to begin to reopen within only a few weeks.
That support made it possible for Kanuga to fully embrace our mission during a difficult time for our region by providing housing for responders, linemen, medical professionals, and families displaced by the storm.
The resilience demonstrated by the Kanuga family in response to the Helene tragedy has been inspiring and a stark reminder of the critical importance of all that Kanuga is and does.
Thank you for the many ways you help to make Kanuga the special place we love, and I look forward to seeing you back soon!
Gratefully,

I f it’s not about love, it’s not about God. Because the Bible says, “God is Love.” Go out and love somebody in the name of Jesus!—Presiding Bishop Michael Curry, at the Nuevo Amanecer conference. Watch the clip.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil. Because of my faith and integrity, the Lord and the blessed will sustain me while I am sick and will restore me to health. Blessed will be those who care for me in my time of need. To those who share bread with me while I am weak, raise me up O Lord that I may repay them many times over.
These words inspired us as we faced enormous recent challenges, including continued recovery from the COVID pandemic and this year’s Hurricane Helene. But those who love Kanuga have never lost faith in the Lord and, because of that faith, have blessed Kanuga with a tremendous year. Kanuga hosted more than 35,000 people in 2024 and has continued to provide a safe haven for personal growth, connection, and renewal for all people.
I am proud to serve as chairman of Kanuga’s board and to support the incredible Kanuga team. Michael Sullivan, our CEO, has endured as great a challenge as any company leader; he and the senior leadership team have succeeded despite facing very long odds. The Kanuga spirit of hopefulness, guidance, and reverence is alive and well under their daily stewardship.
But it is the support of the worldwide community of Kanuga friends reflected in this report that makes possible opportunities for us to find solace, rediscover our faith, and build lasting connections. The support of everyone, whether attendees or financial contributors, is the vital thread woven into the fabric of Kanuga’s mission.
So, it is with a humble heart, on behalf of all who love and need Kanuga, that we ask for each person’s support in 2025. Yes, we greatly need large contributions, but there is no such thing as a “small” one, as each dollar takes Kanuga another step forward.

Kanuga is building a catalog of stories and interviews with guests, conference attendees, camp counselors, volunteers, youth leaders, educators, parishioners, spiritual leaders, and more. We appreciate all have been interviewed for this project. Look for more interviews coming out this Spring, and visit Kanuga’s YouTube channel to enjoy the storytelling catalog of playlists.
You . Come, Lord Jesus, be our guest, and let these gifts to us be blessed.
