A Thin Place

between heaven and earth

Therefore, since we are encompassed by such a vast assembly of witnesses, let us shed every encumbrance... and let us persevere in running the race laid out before us.—Hebrews 12:1 NRSV

The verse from the Letter to the Hebrews has been a steadfast source of strength for me through many days. There’s an undeniable affirmation in considering those who have journeyed before us, now cheering us on in life. Here at Kanuga, this sentiment feels especially tangible in our daily experiences, with nearly a century of transformative work within the community gathered here.

In the pages that follow, we find ourselves surrounded by your testament, supporting the mission of this place through stewardship and philanthropy. From lives transformed at camp to profound moments at conferences, the enduring power of the Kanuga Spirit shines through your generosity. For all you contribute to sustain our ongoing mission, I extend heartfelt gratitude.

I’m also keenly aware of how we’re embraced by the presence of those we love but no longer see in this physical space—elders who have shaped us across generations. Many have departed in the past year, and their memorials are honored here. Their spirits continue to envelop us.

On many days, I stroll through the grounds, attuned to the echoes—the laughter, the songs, the joy of reconnecting with old and new friends. Yet, one of my most cherished moments is when the campus is quiet, yet I still hear the voices. Sometimes, I find myself sitting on the porch of cottage two, listening to a guest recounting tales of childhood or sharing dreams for the future generations. Other times, I find solace in St. Francis Chapel, where the wisdom of an old priest friend still resonates. Across generations, the voices speak.

Athin place is where one can walk within two worlds (between heaven & earth, between the physical & spiritual, between the analog & digital, between others & ourselves) – the worlds are fused together. Either knitted loosely where the differences can be discerned or tightly where the two worlds become one. Thin places aren’t typically perceived with the five senses. Experiencing them goes beyond those limits. —Kanuga Empowered Youth (KEY)

Truly, we are encompassed by a vast assembly of witnesses. What a privilege it is to be part of this unique and sacred community.

My deepest appreciation to you for running this race alongside us.

— THE LABYRINTH RENEWED —

In Honor of Bob

When Albert Gooch, former president of Kanuga, asked The Rev. Bob Haden to develop a new conference at Kanuga, Bob agreed on one condition. As the story goes, Albert held his breath. Bob answered, “The condition is that we install a first-class labyrinth at Kanuga.” Albert gave his approval, and challenged Bob to organize the fundraising effort to build it.

Several decades later, our lovely outdoor labyrinth, designed after the one in Chartres Cathedral, Paris, was in need of some TLC.

Once again with Bob and Mary Anne Haden’s lead, funds were raised for the effort. The renovated labyrinth is now more accessible to more people, with improved lighting and pathways.

Allen Proctor of Haden Institute talks about Bob Haden’s legacy and Kanuga’s labyrinth.

We attended our first Renewal Conference at Kanuga in 2010 with our children (then aged 9 & 7) and had a powerful experience as a family. The unique mix of freedom and programming for the kids made the week a magical one. Especially in this moment in our culture, a wholesome family retreat is a much welcome respite. Our hope is that the children who gather at Colhoun will experience godly fellowship and play, and might someday bring their own families to connect with this sacred place.—Donors, anonymous

— COLHOUN CHILDREN’S ROOM

A Newly Renovated Space for the “Littles”

The Colhoun Room in Kanuga’s gym has been re-imagined as a space for young children, restored and up-fitted with attention to details such as light, furnishings, and play space.

It was thanks to anonymous donors in 2023 that the room was transformed into a Montessori-style layout with a variety of play stations and activity spaces, including an outside patio and top-of-the-line playground equipment.

To date, more than a dozen parishes and groups have used the new room and reported back that they love its flexibility, openness, and design.

— FACILITIES UPDATES

Donor-supported Improvements 2023 saw many wonderful donor-supported projects, including the following:

U Each Kanuga Lake Inn room now has a mini-fridge and coffee maker, with thanks to Mason Alexander.

U Main Lodge has a new roof, with thanks to Kathy High and her husband, George Steele for the lead gift.

U Lakeview Chapel has been refurbished with new decking, thanks to Laura and The Rev. Tommy Townsend.

U Improvements to the Bog such as new boardwalks and signage

U Renovations were made to cottage 19, thanks to an anonymous donor.

“Good News Gardeners spent some more time in the Foster Educational Garden at Kanuga earlier this week, planting okra and other produce, tilling beds, and listening to the music of God’s creation. What a beautiful way to celebrate the spring season and the new life and growth promised to God’s people with Jesus’s ascension. —St. John in the Wilderness, Flat Rock

— GOOD NEWS GARDENS — Volunteers Boost Kanuga’s Conservation Efforts

The mission of the Good News Gardens movement, led by The Episcopal Church, is to partner with people in transformational agrarian ministry that feeds body, mind, and spirit.

Good News Gardens is a church-wide movement of individuals, congregations, schools, colleges, seminaries, monasteries, camps and conference centers involved in a variety of food and creation care ministries—gardening, farming, beekeeping, composting, gleaning, feeding, food justice advocacy.

Kanuga’s Foster Educational Garden has been a key site for St. John in the Wilderness, Flat Rock as the parish focuses on building a Good News Gardens presence.

Good News gardeners incorporate prayer and liturgy into their work. On the fourth Tuesday of each month, they meet in the morning at the garden to complete a list of activities alongside Kanuga’s Environmental Programs Specialist Mary Kait Brown. There is also a Saturday work day in the summer.

Produce from the garden is used by Kanuga’s chefs and also donated to charitable partners in collaboration with St. John’s. The 2024 harvests will benefit Mountain Trail Outdoor School.

All are welcome to join! Sign up HERE

Generations of Kanugans since 1928 have referred to this holy ground as a “thin place,” where we can feel the mysterious power of God sate our hunger to be part of something greater.

FINANCIAL OVERVIEW

Reflecting on the past year, I feel immense gratitude for the Kanuga community and all we have accomplished together. Your philanthropic support, volunteer leadership, and commitment to Kanuga’s future made it possible to:

U Create a new center for young children in the Colhoun Room

U Nimbly respond to necessary—and sometimes surprising—repairs on the Main Lodge roof, Lakeside Chapel, and other community spaces

U Improve the Kanuga Lake Inn guest experience with added amenities like coffee makers and mini-refrigerators

U Successfully relaunch our signature Lansing Lee conference

U Celebrate being together with friends new and old during the Returning & Becoming conference

U Offer life-changing experiences for the next generation of leaders at camp and the outdoor school

Of course, we still have work to do, and together we will embrace new opportunities to continue to strengthen and find new ways of connecting with each other, nature, and the Creator.

Thanks for all you bring to Kanuga. I look forward to seeing you soon!

Gratefully,
