ABOUT THE CHOIR

KANTOREI (or singers) formed in 1997 under Richard Larson’s leadership and has expanded into an auditioned, 52-voice ensemble. Its members come from schools with strong choral music programs, such as Augustana, Brigham Young, Concordia, Luther, St. Olaf, University of Denver, Wartburg and University of Northern Colorado. Kantorei established itself as one of the nation’s premier choral ensembles after performing as an auditioned choir for the 2003 national American Choral Director’s Association conference at Carnegie Hall in New York City, and the Vatican in June 2007. More recently, Kantorei has been featured in several regional and national conferences, including the 2008 National Performing Arts Convention and 2010 Southwestern Regional ACDA convention, both held in Denver. In March 2011, Kantorei returned to the national ACDA conference, with performances at Roosevelt University and Symphony Hall in Chicago. Kantorei completed its second European tour in 2012, traveling to Austria, Hungary and the Czech Republic. The group is conducting a search for a permanent Artistic Director and Conductor to begin in mid-July 1, 2014.

Vocal Symmetry celebrates opposites and balance through music. The program includes a journey of day and night, light and dark, love and sorrow.

It begins with a fanfare setting of Psalm 57 in which the exuberant cry of “Awake, awake!” brackets a more reflective and intimate journey through shadow. Let Beauty Awake, with its clean melodic line, illustrates the simple freshness of the new day. The gentlemen then present an arrangement of a Kentucky Appalachian folk tune, Bright Morning Star. A lone singer begins the piece with a reflection upon, and call to, the star which has so often represented angels and gods. His brothers then assure him that he is surrounded by love, and that the brightness of day is in their souls. Ilay Gandangan, a Filipino sun chant of the Maguindanao tribe, calls on the sun god, Ilay, to end the rain, darkness and sorrow that covers the land.

The piece steadily gains energy and power, reflecting the slow rising of the sun. The next three pieces, Ego flos campi, Here Take This Lovely Flower and Ye Followers of the Lamb illustrate together the growth of the flower under the sun, representing the growth of the soul under love and light.

Following these, As the Sunflower Turns on Her God employs a unique compositional technique based on the Fibonacci series and its approximation of the golden ratio, a number well-known for its role in the growth of the piece’s eponymous flower and throughout nature and art. The first half of the program concludes with a setting of Exsultate. Like Psalm 57, it opens and concludes with a celebratory fanfare juxtaposed with fluid chant lines.

We return with Unclouded Day, the bright first movement of an American song set, implementing an old gospel tune. A tumultuous arrangement speaks of the hope needed to survive dark and turbulent days, and of a final meeting to come. Two standards in vocal literature, Debussy’s Beau Soir and Barber ’s Sure On This Shining Night bring us to the beauty and catharsis of the setting sun and the fall of dusk. Ballade to the Moon is a nocturne exploring observational and psychological experiences associated with love, nature, darkness, and light. The three pinnacle lines are “Come, dream in me!”, “O share thy light!” and “Come sing with me!” Love for the approaching darkness of evening causes the narrator to weep with joy, with only the moon as witness. The text segues into There Will Be Stars, a poem by Sara Teasdale, which uses stars as a powerful symbol of eternal beauty and peace. Longing and melancholy, never far from the surface, are poignantly balanced by hope and an underlying sense of awe and wonder.

Finishing the night-themed set is another choral standard, O Schöne Nacht,

by Brahms. The text illustrates the simple beauties of the night but, in its penultimate line, references a boy sneaking off to his love, transforming a mood of pensive sadness into excitement and joy. As the concert concludes, we reflect on our journey through day and night, love and sorrow, coming to a close with arrangements of an American folk song, Now Our Meeting’s Over, and of 19th century shape note tunes and texts, Long Time Trav’ling.

Both pieces reference the difficulty and complexity of the personal journey through light and dark and what is still to come.

THE CONDUCTORS INTERIM DIRECTOR SARAH HARRISON is serving as the Interim Director of Kantorei for the 2013-2014 season. In addition to Kantorei, she is in her eighth year teaching choir and AP Music Theory at Cherry Creek High School in Greenwood Village. Under her direction, choirs have appeared at several regional and state conventions. Prior to Cherry Creek HS, Ms. Harrison opened and spent five years at Silver Creek Middle/Senior High School in Longmont, CO. In addition to teaching, she sings with various ensembles throughout the community and is an orchestral and jazz string bassist. Ms. Harrison has been a guest conductor and adjudicator in Colorado, Idaho and Nebraska. Ms. Harrison has recently served as Colorado’s ACDA High School Mixed Repertoire and Standards Chair. She also served as Choir Director and Organist at Westview Presbyterian Church in Longmont and taught orchestra in Minnesota before moving to CCHS. Ms. Harrison obtained her Bachelor of Music Education degree, with instrumental and vocal certification, from St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, and her Master of Music in conducting and music education from Colorado State University. She will conduct Kantorei for the entirety of the 2013-2014 concert season, while the group completes a search for a permanent Artistic Director and Conductor who will begin in July 2014.

ASSISTANT CONDUCTOR MICHAEL POHLENZ is Director of Music at Wellshire Presbyterian Church with previous experience as Guest Conductor of the Bethany College Messiah Festival in Lindsborg, KS, and as founding Music Director and Conductor, now Emeritus, of the Wichita Chamber Chorale, an auditioned adult community choir in Wichita, KS. Significant performance achievements of the Chorale included the 1989 National ACDA Convention and the 1996 Joan of Arc Festival in Orléans, France. Dr. Pohlenz has taught choral music and voice at the college level, and vocal and instrumental music at the high school level. He holds choral degrees from Friends University in Wichita, Southern Methodist University in Dallas, and The University of Oklahoma in Norman, with additional doctoral study at The University of Southern California. In his continuing study of choral music, he sang in three Robert Shaw Choral Workshops at Carnegie Hall and studied conducting with Helmuth Rilling at the Oregon Bach Festival. He is currently a performing member of The University of Northern Colorado’s Summerfest Choir.

ACCOMPANIST ALICIA RIGSBY came to Colorado in 1997 after completing her Master of Music degree in piano performance and music theory at Indiana University, Bloomington. Ms. Rigsby was one of the original members of Kantorei, both as a singer and accompanist, but has taken time with her family since 2004. Ms. Rigsby has performed with the Estes Trio, the Aspen Music Festival and the Boulder Chamber Orchestra. She has been teaching music at the Children’s Music Academy, based in Littleton, for 15 years. She is passionate about music as an art form, a teaching tool and an expressionistic medium, and enjoys having all of those musical opportunities in her life. In her free time, she likes to hike, camp, ski and cycle with her husband and two daughters.

In addition to teaching, she sings with various ensembles throughout the community and is an orchestral and jazz string bassist. Ms. Harrison has been a guest conductor and adjudicator in Colorado, Idaho and Nebraska. Ms. Harrison has recently served as Colorado’s ACDA High School Mixed Repertoire and Standards Chair. She also served as Choir Director and Organist at Westview Presbyterian Church in Longmont and taught orchestra in Minnesota before moving to CCHS. Ms. Harrison obtained her Bachelor of Music Education degree, with instrumental and vocal certification, from St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, and her Master of Music in conducting and music education from Colorado State University. She will conduct Kantorei for the entirety of the 2013-2014 concert season, while the group completes a search for a permanent Artistic Director and Conductor who will begin in July 2014.

ASSISTANT CONDUCTOR MICHAEL POHLENZ is Director of Music at Wellshire Presbyterian Church with previous experience as Guest Conductor of the Bethany College Messiah Festival in Lindsborg, KS, and as founding Music Director and Conductor, now Emeritus, of the Wichita Chamber Chorale, an auditioned adult community choir in Wichita, KS. Significant performance achievements of the Chorale included the 1989 National ACDA Convention and the 1996 Joan of Arc Festival in Orléans, France. Dr. Pohlenz has taught choral music and voice at the college level, and vocal and instrumental music at the high school level. He holds choral degrees from Friends University in Wichita, Southern Methodist University in Dallas, and The University of Oklahoma in Norman, with additional doctoral study at The University of Southern California. In his continuing study of choral music, he sang in three Robert Shaw Choral Workshops at Carnegie Hall and studied conducting with Helmuth Rilling at the Oregon Bach Festival. He is currently a performing member of The University of Northern Colorado’s Summerfest Choir.

ACCOMPANIST ALICIA RIGSBY came to Colorado in 1997 after completing her Master of Music degree in piano performance and music theory at Indiana University, Bloomington. Ms. Rigsby was one of the original members of Kantorei, both as a singer and accompanist, but has taken time with her family since 2004. Ms. Rigsby has performed with the Estes Trio, the Aspen Music Festival and the Boulder Chamber Orchestra. She has been teaching music at the Children’s Music Academy, based in Littleton, for 15 years. She is passionate about music as an art form, a teaching tool and an expressionistic medium, and enjoys having all of those musical opportunities in her life. In her free time, she likes to hike, camp, ski and cycle with her husband and two daughters.

KANTOREI (or singers) formed in 1997 under Richard Larson’s leadership and has expanded into an auditioned, 52-voice ensemble. Its members come from schools with strong choral music programs, such as Augustana, Brigham Young, Concordia, Luther, St. Olaf, University of Denver, Wartburg and University of Northern Colorado. Kantorei established itself as one of the nation’s premier choral ensembles after performing as an auditioned choir for the 2003 national American Choral Director’s Association conference at Carnegie Hall in New York City, and the Vatican in June 2007. More recently, Kantorei has been featured in several regional and national conferences, including the 2008 National Performing Arts Convention and 2010 Southwestern Regional ACDA convention, both held in Denver. In March 2011, Kantorei returned to the national ACDA conference, with performances at Roosevelt University and Symphony Hall in Chicago. Kantorei completed its second European tour in 2012, traveling to Austria, Hungary and the Czech Republic. The group is conducting a search for a permanent Artistic Director and Conductor to begin in mid-July 1, 2014.
