A CENTER FOR ASYLUM SEEKERS
Mixed Use No Man’s Land - Eagle Pass, Texas, USA Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico

There is currently a crisis occurring at the United States and Mexico border. Conditions at points of entry along the border have become unfavorable due to the increasing number of people seeking asylum at the border. The asylum process is long and arduous with recent delays creating a backlog of cases. The process requires the individual seeking asylum to be physically present in the United States or at a point of entry along the border. The backlog of cases, then, means that migrants are left in limbo while they await a response to their case, some waiting months. Because of this many individuals are resorting to occupying the streets, spaces near border walkways, and the bridges themselves. Dangerous conditions in the areas near points of entry leave migrants in vulnerable positions. A facility that houses these individuals and families temporarily and safely, is essential. *This project was inspired by and initially followed the guidelines for Unfuse’s 2020 No Man’s Land competition

User Study Collages
The conditions at the border create a barrier between the user groups, especially between the asylum seekers and the border patrol agents. The design of this facility is intended to diminish the physical, mental, and social barriers between the asylum seekers and the border patrol agents. By blurring the boundaries that exist among the groups, the environment of the facility will become one of healing and comfort. To blur the group boundaries, the program of this facility is woven and superimposed.

A Public Reaction. A PUBLIC PAVILION Assembly Savannah, Georgia, USA
Site Perspective
n.02
Revitalization. Response. Reaction.
The federal buildings situated around Telfair Square in Savannah, GA have led to the decline in popularity and use of this square. This area is in need of something that will draw people and keep them coming back. In addition, the federal court buildings adjacent to this site provide an opportunity to create a space for people to directly practice their First Amendment Right of Freedom of Speech. The current political climate yields the need for a space for people to voice their opinions and concerns and be heard directly by those that can make significant changes. This pavilion serves the public as a space for those voices to be heard. The structural grid of the pavilion mimics that of the court building next to it; the courthouse is becoming transparent, politics are becoming transparent. The canopy system moves up and down at various points, creating the opportunity for various degrees of enclosure. It also provides the potential for an individual to raise or lower the canopy in response to an event or ruling. This pavilion is one for responses and reactions. This pavilion is for the people.

STRUCTURAL LAYERS & MATERIALITY
PAVILION STRUCTURAL GRID
ADJACENT BUILDING STRUCTURAL GRID
Layer 1: Grid
The structural grid consists of steel, wood, and concrete columns and steel and wood flitch beams. The steel helps maintain structural integrity throughout the long spanning structure while the wood attached to each steel member contrasts the materials that surround the site. The connection details provide an elegance to an otherwise simple structure. The grid layout on the overall structure is meant to mimic that of the adjacent building that sits on a site with almost identical site characteristics. The simplicity of the structure allows the canopy system and the nest structure to become the prominent features.
22.
Layer 2: Nest
The nest houses the support systems for the overall pavilion. It contains the restroom and some mechanical space. The structure of the sphere is steel and it is clad in woven crepe myrtle wood. The crepe myrtle wood is locally sourced, bringing another natural element to a site surrounded by concrete and brick. The woven cladding creates an interesting light quality inside the sphere. The restroom does not look like a restroom and it is as much a part of the design and experience as the overall structure.
Layer 3: Canopy
The canopy structure is made up of triangular segments. Each segment consists of three thin pieces of wood joined together. The inner piece has laser cut cells subtracted from it. Each segment is joined together by cabling that is fed through channels on each side of the segments. The canopy is attached to the structure at various points. At some points, the cable is attached to a wheel. This wheel can be used to move the canopy up and down, thus creating differing degrees of enclosure and an undulating surface. The light quality that the segments create is meant to evoke the speckled light quality that vegetation provides. The canopy structure creates an inviting shaded area for people to rest and gather.

Materiality
The materials of the pavilion contrast the materials around the site. The wood is inviting and comforting, a relief from the asphalt and brick.

n.03
Centroid. Linear. Balance.
Kayaking is essentially those things. You, the kayaker, are the center point. The stabilizer. The kayak is the linear element; an extension of the kayaker, an extension from the centroid. This linearity yields directionality. Directing one from one place to another; from land to water. The water acts as a network, flowing and connecting people and places. The main form of this architecture began with a centroid and a linear, establishing a grid of spaces. From there, the grid was broken to introduce the dynamic nature of the site and the act of kayaking. And finally, the path flows from the land throughout the building and then to the water. Thus the building is comprised of the linear, the centroid, and the flowing.
