At a recent meeting, your Kansas Pork Association Executive Board approved changes in the eligibility requirements for the KPA Wendell Moyer Scholarship. The changes allow students who attend colleges across the state to apply.

Please note the $1,000 scholarship supports youth who have demonstrated an interest in the swine industry.

Kansas Pork Association Wendell Moyer Scholarship

To be eligible you must: • Be currently enrolled as a college student in Kansas with junior or senior standing majoring in an agriculture or related field and plan to:

- Pursue a career in swine production management or a closely related field, or

- Attend veterinary school with an emphasis on swine, or

- Attend graduate school and major in a degree with an emphasis on swine.

• Write a brief letter describing:

- Past and current experience in the pork industry

- Leadership activities related to the pork industry and

- Role you see yourself playing in the pork industry after graduation.

• Submit an essay of 750 words or less describing an issue you see confronting the pork industry today or in the future – and offer your solutions.

• Obtain two letters of reference from current or former professors or industry professionals.

Association Update Jodi Oleen Director of Consumer Relations Reflecting on 2013 As we sit down and begin to reflect on 2013, I’m always amazed at how much our farmer members do each year to reach out to those who might not understand farm life.

These efforts take precious time away from the everyday responsibilities of the farm and from their families but their importance in our freedom to farm for generations can’t be underestimated. This year KPA members have given their time to visit with customers at women’s events, taught food and culinary classes, served food to people giving the gift of life through blood drives, invited film crews onto their farms and visited with professional organizations about food and farming.

Efforts by you and your peers have touched literally hundreds of thousands of Kansans that want to know more about where their food comes from — and your efforts don’t go without thanks.

KPA sponsors student conference Your association spent Wednesday, October 23rd, talking with students attending the Southwest Kansas Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) 2013 Fall Leadership Conference held in Dodge City.

During three breakout sessions, KPA staff spoke to approximately 60 junior high students about characteristics of farmers, the ethical responsibility that farmers have and what a Kansas pig farm looks like today, utilizing both videos and the model pig barn. Bacon Farmers

Shine in Retail Program

W

e wanted people to share with us where their bacon started — and they answered.

During National Pork Month in October, “Your Bacon Starts Here” was a retail program hosted by your associatoin through partnerships with Hy-vee, Farmland Foods and a grant from the Iowa Pork Producers Association. The program’s goal was to start conversation about food and farming in Kansas while encouraging grocery shoppers to purchase pork through print, in-store and online outreach. In the contest portion of the program, participants were asked to share a picture showing others where their bacon started.

Promoted in 21 Hy-Vee stores in the Kansas City area, grocery shoppers saw a variety of signage including materials in and around the meat case, a life size stand up of one farmer and his wife, recipe cards and giveaway reuseable grocery bags. To bring “Your Bacon Starts Here” to life, KPA staff teamed up with Minnow Project, an advertising agency out of Lincoln, Nebr., and took a video crew to visit three family pork farms in Kansas to film and create the visuals for the program.

The month long program and contest ran October 14 – November 12. One lucky winner received a year’s supply of bacon and another lucky winner received $250.00 worth of bacon for being the “people’s choice” award winner.

“We are very pleased with the overall reach and outcome of this program,” says Jodi Oleen, director of consumer relations. “Most importantly, elements from this campaign will be used for years to come.”

KPA Sponsors 2013 K-State Swine Day Producers, veterinarians and industry members joined students and faculty at the KSU Alumni Center in Manhattan on Thursday, November 21st for the 2013 Swine Industry Day. Each year this event brings those with various roles throughout the industry together for discussion and learning. Your association participated in the Technology Trade Show held throughout the course of the day, featuring multiple producer education take home resources, 2013 consumer program materials and farmer videos, and a drawing giveaway for a new Traeger grill.

It’s with great excitement that the Kansas Pork Association would like to invite you to an

Operation Main Street 1.0 Training in Manhattan on January 13-14.

OMS has facilitated over 6,700 presentations to key decision-makers and influencers such as youth and classroom education, culinary arts and nutrition classes, citizen groups, dietitians, county commissioners and small animal veterinarians. Since January 2008, OMS presentations have received coverage in print, online, television and radio media outlets resulting in an audience reach of over 31 million.

The speakers are farmers, veterinarians, industry experts, mothers and fathers who are passionate about agriculture, rural America and raising healthy and nutritious food.

OMS serves three roles:

1. familiarizes you with conversation techniques to connect with customers and consumers 2. provides a media training and messaging strategy short course 3. facilitates grass-roots speaking opportunities in Kansas

The Operation Main Street Speakers Bureau is funded by the National Pork Board. The National Pork Board has responsibility for Checkoff-funded research, promotion and consumer information projects and for communicating with pork producers and the public.

Chinese Holiday Season Brims with Visions of Pork The holiday season is approaching in China, and shoppers and retailers alike are brimming with visions of pork – and, increasingly, of U.S. pork.

“As the January lunar New Year approaches and the seasonal winter meat consumption period gets underway, USMEF’s efforts to raise the visibility of U.S. pork and its quality, safety and value are moving into high gear,” says Joel Haggard, USMEF’s senior vice president over the AsiaPacific region.

by USDA at more than 50 million metric tons (more than Undersecretary Michael Scuse; USMEF Senior VP Joel Haggard at 110 billion pounds,)the upcoming holiday period is circled the Food and Hotel China exhibition. on the calendars of U.S. pork exporters.

The retail footprint of U.S. pork in China has expanded since the first sliced bone-in butt portion-control steak products were introduced at select Shanghai retail stores this summer. Several U.S. pork items are now available at major retail chains, including METRO Cash & Carry, RT Mart, Sam’s Club and Auchan Supermarkets.

In mid-November, U.S. pork was front and center at China’s flagship Food and Hotel China (FHC) exhibition in Shanghai, where four U.S. pork brands were prominently sampled and featured in front of thousands of industry visitors ranging from retailers and restaurant chains to wholesale distributors from thirdand fourth-tier Chinese cities. Funding for the exhibition was provided through the Pork Checkoff and the USDA Market Access Program (MAP).

“We expanded our presence at FHC this year in recognition of U.S. pork’s growing retail presence, and the desire of importers and distributors to highlight American pork’s attributes vis-à-vis that of the competition,” says Ming Liang, USMEF’s marketing director for China.

At FHC, USMEF sampled and gathered comments and opinions on a winter-specific retail product, thinly sliced pork butt for seasonal hot pot. Although beef and lamb are traditional hot pot favorites, sliced pork usage is expected to increase.

“This item has potential because we can feature it at lower prices than popular sliced domestic and Oceanic lamb, which have skyrocketed in price,” Ming says.

USMEF also is investing in online marketing of U.S. pork in China. With an 80 percent annual growth in online merchandise sales over the past five years, China is the fastest growing e-commerce market in the world.

A working lunch, sponsored by USMEF in mid-November, highlighted the e-commerce market for food in China and featured China e-commerce platform leader TMall.Com General Manager Ma Xue Jun, who related stories of TMall.com’s record-breaking Single’s Day sales on Nov. 11.

Recognizing what our farmers, members and friends are doing to go above and beyond

Dr. Joel DeRouchey is named ‘40 under 40’ Vance Publishing’s 40 Under 40 Award recognizes young leaders in the agricultural industry who will be instrumental in meeting the 2050 challenge.

As one of the leading swine nutritionists in the country, Joel DeRouchey is a rising star within the pork industry and is a frequent speaker at regional, national and international producer and veterinarian meetings. His practical swine nutrition research focuses on helping producers lower production costs through the use of alternative ingredients and improved feed-processing techniques.

DeRouchey received his undergraduate degree from South Dakota State University and did his graduate work at Kansas State University. He has served the National Pork Board through his participation on the Animal Science Advisory Committee as well as the Swine Educators Executive Committee. In addition, he has been a Pork Quality Assurance Plus Trainer since the program’s inception.

“As an extension specialist, researcher and teacher at K-State, Joel has become a trusted advisor to producers and students,” says Mike Tokach, Kansas State University, and Bob Thaler, South Dakota State University. “He is an excellent example that you can be recognized for mastering subject matter in multiple fields while being a team player. Joel is known for his knowledge in swine nutrition and management, environmental management and youth livestock programming. This diversity in expertise has propelled him to high visibility.”

Dr. Mike Tokach awarded university’s highest honor This year, Kansas State University is honoring Mike Tokach as a new university distinguished professor. This lifetime title is the highest honor that the university bestows on its faculty Tokach, a professor of animal sciences and industry and a K-State Research and Extension specialist, researches practical swine nutrition and works with producers on rapid adoption and technology transfer to Kansas livestock producers. He has authored 204 articles in scientific journals, six book chapters, more than 700 extension and nonrefereed articles and has been awarded seven patents for his research. He has given more than 100 invited lectures at national and international conferences, and has developed multiple in-depth nutritional education programs.

Additionally, Tokach is a member of an aggressive swine extension group that has generated more than $3.5 million in gifts to K-State for construction to facilities such as the gestation barn and weaning facilities to support extension research projects.

Tokach joined K-State in 1991 as an assistant professor. He earned his bachelor’s degree in animal and range science from North Dakota State University in 1986; his master’s degree in animal science from Kansas State University in 1988; and his doctorate in animal science from the University of Minnesota in 1991.

Apricot-Glazed Ham Prep Time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 1 hour, 30 minutes Ingredients 5 pound fully-cooked boneless ham 1/3 cup brown sugar, firmly packed 1 tablespoon cornstarch 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon cloves 2/3 cup apricot nectar 2 tablespoons lemon juice

Place ham on rack in a shallow roasting pan.

Bake, uncovered, in a 325 degree F. oven for 1 1/4 hours or until meat thermometer registers 140 degrees F. (about 15-18 minutes per pound.) For the glaze, in a small saucepan combine brown sugar, cornstarch, nutmeg and cloves. Stir in apricot nectar and lemon juice. Cook over medium heat until thickened and bubbly, stirring constantly. Brush ham with glaze. Continue baking 15-20 minutes more, brushing occasionally with glaze.

Yield: 20 servings

The purpose of this program is to encourage producers to be proactive in providing the best possible care for their animals and show commitment to the ethical principles of pork production as outlined in the We Care responsible pork initiative. Having a PQA Plus advisor review your operation can both improve the well-being and productivity of animals in your care by noting changes or additions that may not otherwise be noticed.

The Kansas Pork Association is offering a $100 rebate to Kansas Pork Producers completing a PQA Plus Site Assesment. The funding is available on a first-come-first-serve basis.

• Rebate amount may not equal more than the total assessment cost.

• Rebates available on a first-come, first-served basis only as funds are available.
