Benedictines grow with Brazilian city

Father Jude Burbach and I traveled to Brazil in December; we were pleased to participate in the December 12 ordination of Father Vinícius de Queiroz Rezende in the monastic church of São Bento in Mineiros. Bishop Herbert Hermes, O.S.B., a member of St. Benedict’s Abbey and bishop of the Prelacy of Cristâlandia, was the ordaining bishop.

Father Jude had worked in Mineiros for eight years, from 1975 to 1983. This was his first opportunity to return to the city. He was warmly received, and was able to converse in Portuguese with many.

Since 1962 our monks have been the pastors of the Catholics of Mineiros. They have done great work in creating programs of worship and service as they watched the city grow over these many years.

The month of February, 2008, marks the beginning of a new era for the city as the local bishop has worked with the monks to divide the city into two parishes, each with ten faith communities within the constituted boundaries. The traditional parish of Holy Spirit will have diocesan priests as pastors. The new parish, São Bento, will have Benedictine pastors.

The newly ordained monk priest, Father Vinícius de Queiroz Rezende, will join Father Rodrigo Perissinotto and Father Joaquim Carlos Carvalho to make a three man team for pastoral work in São Bento. The parish church will be the monastery church and the parish will assist with maintenance of the facility. The parish has recently completed the building of a parish office near the monastery.

Father Rodrigo will be pastor. He has assisted Father Joaquim the past four years; Father Joaquim had been pastor the past twelve years. He hopes to become more involved in local counseling and in regional workshops for religious, work that he has done along with pastoral work.

The city has grown to a population of 55,000, and a high percentage of the residents are Catholic. New people have come to town to work in industries that have begun. Perdigão is a poultry slaughter operation, begun only a year ago.

Father Vinícius is a native of Mineiros. He has been studying for priesthood for the past many years, being a member of the group of our monks that lives in Goiânia, the capital city of the state of Goiás.

There, educational opportunities are available in private high schools, at the Catholic University, and at the Institue for Religious (men and women) to do advanced study in Philosophy and Theology This was

spring 2009 started in the 1980s mainly for Religious and most of our men study there, (Official name is: The Institute of Philosophy and Theology in Goiás) and seminary programs.

Fathers Joaquim, Rodrigo and Vinícius each have their parents living in the city of Mineiros.

Our relationship with the community has borne the fruit of vocations from the families whom we have served. The Serra Club has been faithful in its support of the Benedictines.

They rejoice in their long-standing tie to our monastic presence.

Father Kieran’s health is steady; he had great reports from his medical exams in the States when he was here in October; his vision is somewhat impaired but he manages with grace.

Prior Josias’ mother died in recent months. During our December visit to Mineiros, Father Jude Burbach and I visited his father and his sisters who live in Mineiros.

Bishop Herbert turned 75 in May and sent his letter of resignation to the Holy See. That letter has been acknowledged; however, a new bishop of Cristalândia has not been announced. Bishop Herbert and Father Duane Roy, O.S.B., a member of St. Benedict’s Abbey who assist Bishop Herbert, remain in their work of governing the Prelacy.

“He just didn’t seem to have the same sparkle in his eye,” Brickner recalls. “At the same time I was at the point where I was trying to provide some spiritual direction to our guys, but there was a limit to what I could do.”

Brickner saw a perfect match, so he approached his old friend about the chaplain job.

“Father Hugh had been great with me over the years,” Brickner says. “I thought he could provide an outlet to our guys outside the coaching staff.”

At first, Father Hugh was reluctant. He was now busy as assistant business manager of the Abbey and in addition he had no idea what a basketball chaplain did.

“I told him I’d try,” Father Hugh recalls.

“Hugh doesn’t do anything half-way,” Brickner says. “When he said he’d do it, we expected he’d show up and practice periodically and at home games. Shoot, he was at every practice, at every home game. His other schedule kind of worked around ours.” When Father Hugh couldn’t make it to road games, he met the team at the bus to lead them in prayer before they departed.

The change in the team was immediate, Brickner said. “He was a very positive influence. Through his prayers I think the guys realized there is always a bigger picture than basketball.”

Father Hugh still remembers his first game well.

“I asked Joe what I should do,” he recalls, “and he said, ‘You sit at the foot of the bench and I’ll sit at the head and if things don’t go well we’ll trade places.

“I told him at the end of the season there were a few time we should have traded places.”

“That’s the only disagreement we’ve ever had,” Brickner says.

“When he suggested that maybe he should be the one in the huddle telling the kids what to do. I told him that would be like me saying Mass.”

Father Hugh says he didn’t realize how much he’d missed contact with students.

“I seem to be very huggable,” he says with a wide grin. “Not just from mothers, but from players too.”

Turning serious, Father Hugh fights back tears as he expresses the impact of the Ravens basketball program on him.

“They’ve given me new life,” he says, “spiritually, emotionally and psychologically.”

In the past year, Father Hugh has had to scale back his involvement in the program, after he suffered a severe knee injury from a fall on ice, an incident he refers to as his “fall from grace.”

Father Hugh grimaces at what he sees as his limited impact on the team today. But someone with perspective disagrees. John Peer, an assistant coach for the Ravens, has a special tie to the priest. He was a member of the first Raven team for which Father Hugh served as chaplain. Peer and his teammate Pat McGowan had suffered injuries in 2003 that forced them to sit out the season. Their decisions to make comebacks the following season held the potential for a lifetime of physical debilitation. Peer says Father Hugh was very important to the two of them and to the entire team during that difficult time and has remained close to many players from that year.

“Father got both of us through that,” Peer says, “dealing with

injuries and old men’s bodies. He was a big part of our Benedictine experience.”

But Peer stresses that Father Hugh is as important to the 2008 Ravens as he was to his 2003 team.

“Things are on the right track spiritually now because of what Father Hugh has carried through, whether he wants to believe it or not,” he says. “These teams now are better off from day one in the program than we were. There was a lot more to fix with us then.”

Peer says Father Hugh’s legacy is to ensure that the Raven program is grounded in something bigger than winning and losing, that it is producing well-rounded young men.

But just in case, on the Ravens Web page it says of Father Hugh: “Since his addition to the staff, the Ravens have an overall winning record—Father Hugh continually reminds Coach Brickner of this little known fact.”

From The Desert Self-Knowledge and Knowledge of God

S

aint Gregory of Nazianzen, Bishop, in a sermon about the “Marvel of the Incarnation,” wrote “He [Son of God] who makes rich is made poor; he takes on the poverty of my flesh, that I may gain the riches of his divinity.”

I read this selection from my breviary as part of my Morning Prayers. As I spent my Holy Hour in front of the Blessed Sacrament before Mass, Saint Gregory’s words played over and over in my mind. Yet, at the same time, I had many trains of thoughts that morning. These thoughts were not distractions, for they somehow seemed linked.

I recalled these in a column I wrote last year: “In all circumstances give thanks…”

I wrote about how a very difficult Desert Journey started for me during my last two years in the seminary. It was a period of suffering, yet as I said in that column, “and it was the best thing to happen to me,” for I learned much about myself and God. No sooner than I had this thought, than my train of thought went another direction. I recalled conversations from a couple years ago I had with someone who was facing some very difficult challenges, problems, and choices. I look at these conversations in this manner: he kept talking about his symptoms and he seemed to despair of things and those around him. I encouraged him to go beyond the symptoms and discover and diagnose the root problems. To “go beyond the symptoms” means to freely consent the embracing and entering of your own Desert.

It means walking a journey of self-knowledge.

Now these trains of thoughts come together, for I also spent a few minutes during my Holy Hour reading a few more pages from Ralph Martin’s book, The Fulfillment of All Desire. He writes “The saints speak of a twofold knowledge that is essential for making progress in the spiritual life: self-knowledge and knowledge of God…Self-knowledge involves both knowledge of the great dignity and beauty of the human soul in its exalted destiny as well as a profound understanding of the wounds 6

and darkness that sin inflicts on it. Teresa of Avila compares the soul to a beautiful crystal castle that is brilliantly illuminated by the Lord who dwells within it.”

Each of our souls is beautiful, for it is meant to be the place where the Lord dwells. This is part of self-knowledge. Yet so is understanding, knowing and “confronting the wounds and darkness that sin inflicts upon it.” It is wonderful to know we Father Gabriel Landis are created in God’s image. Or to say from the depths of our hearts along with Saint Gregory of Nazianzen about the Mystery of the Incarnation, “He [Son of God] who makes rich is made poor; he takes on the poverty of my flesh, that I may gain the riches of his divinity.”

We are challenged by the Saints and Sacred Scripture to know what things darken our soul. We read in James 4:1-4, “What causes wars, and what causes fighting among you?

Is it not your passions that are at war in your members? You desire and do not have; so you kill. And you covet and cannot obtain; so you fight and wage war. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive because you ask wrongly to spend it on your passions. Unfaithful creatures!

Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore, whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” Our passions make war within us, says St. James. To be attached to the things of this world, where they become more important than our union with God, darkens the beauty of the soul. These passions, given free reign, as St. Paul says in Galatians 5:21b: “I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.” To sum up so far, selfknowledge is awareness that we know the soul is meant to be a place where the Lord dwells. We should desire then that our soul, our “beautiful crystal castle,” should be as free from the darkness of sin as possible. This leads to facing those things which threaten to darken the soul. To go beyond the symptoms, and with the aid and graces of Jesus Christ, up-root and eradicate as best as possible the root-causes.

spring 2009 Knowledge of God is important too! That should be self-evident for those who wish to live a spiritual life. But here is one important reason why. If we have self-knowledge, but lack sufficient knowledge of God’s love and mercy, we could easily fall into the trap of despair. Martin comments: “Such painful awareness of one’s sin easily tempts one to despair, discouragement and deep ‘depression;’ thinking reform is hopeless, one may ‘surrender irrevocably to the world.’ Bernard calls this despair the greatest evil of all, and insists God’s mercy is always available whenever a sinner turns to Him. Bernard writes, ‘My opinion is that all those who lack knowledge of God are those who refuse to turn to him.’”

So why is self-knowledge and knowledge of God important? Answer: Humility.

Martin quotes both John of the Cross and Teresa of Avila respectively.

“While we are on this earth nothing is more important to us than humility…In my opinion we shall never completely know ourselves if we don’t strive to know God. By gazing at His grandeur, we get in touch with our lowliness; by looking at His purity, we shall see our own filth; by pondering His humility, we shall see how far we are from being humble.

“Well now, it is foolish to think that we will enter heaven without entering into ourselves, coming to know ourselves, reflecting on our misery and what we owe God, and begging him often for mercy.”

Having self-knowledge, both of the beauty of our soul and those things which threaten to darken it; and knowledge of God’s love, mercy, and His holiness conforms our proud hearts into hearts where humility grows. Jesus, who took on our flesh, humbled himself, that we may gain the riches of his divinity, and therefore finds a soul where He may dwell.

Praised Be Our Savior Jesus Christ! Now and Always! Amen!

Lemke book a ‘fascinating portrait’ of maverick monk by: Joel Rippinger, American Benedictine Review Monastic history is replete with larger than life characters. They frequently emerge from founding generations and leave a trail of unbridled energy and consternated confreres in their wake. Such was the historical persona of Father Peter Henry Lemke. A product of the German Enlightenment, he was a Lutheran minister who converted to Catholicism. In the course of his conversion, Lemke was attracted to the resurgent Catholicism of early nineteenth-century Germany.

Falling under the influence of Bishop Johann Michael Sailer, he was ordained to the priesthood. After a brief sojourn of pastoral ministry in Bavaria, he embarked on his own for the United States in 1834.

He made his way to Pennsylvania where he encountered one of the storybook figures of early American Catholicism, Demetrius (Prince) Gallitzin. Much like Lemke, Gallitzin was a convert to Catholicism. He had come over to the United States in the 1790s and under the aegis of Bishop John Carroll was ordained as a priest.

When Lemke met him in the wilds of Pennsylvania in 1834, the Russian-born prince had been laboring for over three decades as a missionary. When Gallitzin died in 1840, Lemke was ready to take up his missionary mantle. One of the ways he did this was to return to Europe to seek funds and like-minded missionaries.

When he stopped at Metten Abbey in 1844 he met one of the abbey’s professors, Boniface Wimmer, who confided to Lemke that he was interested in coming to America as a missionary. It was in this instance that Lemke suggested to Wimmer how he should gather a group of Benedictines to come and establish a community in the area around Carrolltown, Pennsylvania, where Lemke had been working. The ensuing story of Wimmer’s arrival in 1846, a subsequent move by Wimmer to Latrobe, and the growth of the first Benedictine community and congregation in the United States, has been told elsewhere.

What this highly subjective, stream of consciousness histori-

cal recollection gives to the reader ready enough to traverse its ramshackle and disorganized framework is a fascinating portrait of a figure who in many ways was Wimmer in a minor key. Lemke was a maverick in every respect, given to impulsive moves that hopscotched diocesan and state boundaries and gave little regard for received orders. He was the opposite of political correctness, giving unflinching commentary on one page about the areligious environment of American cities and on the next page of how slavery as an institution had a deserved place in American life.

What makes the last three decades of Lemke’s life more notable was his entry into the Benedictine community of St. Vincent and his subsequent missionary forays. They took him to “Bleeding Kansas” in the years just before the Civil War, to the gritty urban landscape of Newark and Elizabeth, New Jersey, and finally back to St. Vincent. Through it all, Lemke remained a restless figure, never quite comfortable with the parish or congregation or convent entrusted to his care.

One can be grateful for the monks of St. Benedict’s Abbey in Atchison, Kansas, for seeing through the translation of this memoir and its publication. It is a vivid reminder to all of the outsized personalities and the mercurial temperaments that made up so much of the pioneer generation of American monks.

Obl ates Rule provides ‘tools’ for a good lent

Today is so cold it seems as if not much life can continue but I know that spring will arrive one day along with the many joys and alleluias of Easter. Before that we must live our Lent. For so many people Lent is merely a large groan of, “What will I do this year?

I have tried so many different ways, and it seems that very little is accomplished each year.”

The answer, I believe, is in how we approach the season.

The Church wisely gives a Lenten season each year, and some years ago we were more or less told what we needed to do was merely “survive” it. Let us look at how we can see Lent as a real challenge for growth in spiritual life.

The spiritual life is the same and yet different for everyone. It is the same in that we all are asked to do something. For some that means doing only what is required of us. For others, it might mean taking on so much we face an impossible task.

Chapter 4 of the Holy Rule, “Tools of Good Works,” is something that can really work for us as a means of growing closer to Jesus in the Sacraments and in many other wonderful spiritual encounters. It is my suggestion that you take this chapter and spend all of Lent with it. Each day take several of the verses and use them as an examination of conscience. Look into yourself more deeply than by simply saying I have or have not been guilty in a particular way.

We are called to fast as a good work and we so often only think of food or drink in this area. We can fast from many others things such as too much television, light entertainment reading, talking in a negative way about others. We might also wonder how much we fast in our thoughts about situations. One of the greatest objections of Benedict is grumbling. We can so often be guilty of grumbling without even realizing we are doing it. This chapter which appears at first to be so very elementary can become a genuine challenge to our Christian lifestyle.

I have two other challenges for this Lent that will hopefully be carried over into your oblate life. The first, which I would strongly suggest, is setting aside two periods a day for prayer. Use whatever you may already be using for prayer, but try to look more deeply into what it means to grow in relationship with God through prayer.

Sometimes some of the best prayer happens when one feels as if nothing is happening. Prayer is a discipline, such as physical exercise, and it takes time. There are times when much seems to be going on and other times when it would seem that nothing is happening.

Prayer is, above all, falling more and more in love with God. A love affair that can bring about many different feelings within us to challenge our relationship with God, but we must pray. We must pray on a very regular basis each day. I would strongly suggest setting aside a period of prayer in the morning and another in the evening.

For some the morning time might be very difficult but if we take

stock of our morning activities we might be able to make a space for prayer. The monk is called to pray always and oblates are called to nothing less. Try very hard to take just a second or two to utter something to God before you begin any new endeavor.

The second challenge is to read a spiritual book this Lent.

The monk is called to read a book Brother John Peto in its entirety during Lent. I think Director of Oblates the book should be something about Benedictine life if at all possible. I have listed a number of books that might well serve for this purpose: • The Oblate Life, edited by Gervase Holdaway, O.S.B. • The Benedictine Handbook Both of these books give some excellent information on things Benedictine and may well become a daily guide to many oblates to be read again and again. Three books by Michael Casey: • Truthful Living, Saint Benedict’s Teaching on Humility • Sacred Reading – The Ancient Art of Lectio Divina • Toward God – The Ancient Wisdom of Western Prayer Casey is a Trappist monk from Australia. He has a good number of books about the monastic life and prayer. These books are a challenge but well worth the effort and could well be something that would not be finished by the end of Lent for some.

• A Life Giving Way – A Commentary on the Rule of St. Benedict by Esther de Waal • Reading Saint Benedict – Reflections on the Rule by Adalbert de Vogue There are many other commentaries on the Rule and it is a good idea for oblates to have at least one good commentary.

A Hill of Beans “Your research won’t amount to a hill of beans until it touches the people in the pews,” was the advice that my friend and former physician gave over dinner during my last visit home. I had just presented to Evan “Doc” Peterson and his wife Lois the research project developed by Dom James Leachman, OSB and me. I kept his admonition in mind, now that I am beginning to bring home the fruit of my studies in Rome.

Dom James, as monks are called in England, is a monk of another St. Benedict’s Abbey, this one located in the London suburb of Ealing.

He is a professor of liturgy at the Pontifical Institute of Liturgy, Sant’Anselmo, Rome. He and I had traveled to Atchison for Christmas of 2007 and while there visited the three parishes of Doniphan County, Kansas, where I had served as pastor from 1993-1999.

Dom James knew of these parishes not only from me personally but also from their story that I have published far and wide. I have told the story of what we did during those brief years of my pastorate in the Doniphan County parishes, first St. Benedict’s, Bendena, and then also St. Charles, Troy, and St. Joseph, Wathena. Their story has been published several times in The Tablet, a Catholic weekly published from London with a world-wide circulation of 23,000, and in a similar publication called Tertio Millennio, published weekly from Antwerp, Belgium, for Dutch speaking Catholics.

I have told the story of how these three rural parishes in Kansas celebrated Evening Prayer every Sunday and from this developed their celebration of Evening Prayer for the Dead. This liturgy featured music composed by our friend Joan Wingert and was published by Celebration Publications of Kansas City.

Having told the stories of these parishes while studying in Rome, I had returned home to tell the story of my studies in Rome, as my doctoral dissertation was nearing completion. Dom James and I were at the home of Shirley and Gordon Kimsey where Doc and Lois put on a feast.

During dinner Dom James and I took the opportunity to share the story of the research project that we Fr. Daniel’s new book, Appreciating the had recently founded.

Second Vatican Council (1962-65) the Church has dedicated much energy first to translating the new liturgy into English and the many languages of the world and then to implementing the vernacular liturgy and learning how to celebrate the liturgy well, for example, as we did in the parishes of Doniphan County. In fact, different schools of thought have arisen

and have developed concerning the best way to celebrate the liturgy. The differences between these schools of thought can even lead to conflict as people seek to preserve Father Daniel McCarthy different values.

Dom James and I have noticed, moreover, that in the effort to celebrate the renewed liturgy well, little attention has been given to the detailed study of the renewed prayer texts themselves. We believe that the time is now opportune to rise above the divisions among the various schools of thought in order to deepen the academic study and appreciation of the renewed prayer of the Church in its original Latin text. With this in mind, at the meeting of Societas Liturgica in Palermo, August 2007, we proposed a new model of liturgical renewal, which we call Liturgiam Aestimare : Appreciating the Liturgy, which seeks to appreciate the prayer of the Church through a contemplative study of its Latin text. We trust that a renewed appreciation of the official prayer texts will help the Church to discern the way forward.

Having explained our lofty vision and high goals to our friends around the table, Doc Peterson reflected a moment and then responded with his practical and down to earth admonition: “Your research won’t amount to a hill of beans until it touches the people in the pews.” With this in mind, Dom James and I have sought to put our research into practice. Thus, following our first international and ecumenical meeting of scholars in Rome, we held a Study Day for professionals who are not experts in our field. This included several professors, who use our research to teach their graduate seminary courses, and several journalists interested in promoting our work in their publications.

We have also planned parish workshops to teach a general appreciation of the prayer texts of the church’s liturgy. These workshops will take on a new immediacy in several years when the new English translation of the Sacramentary or Roman Missal is implemented. The Sacramentary is the book that contains all the prayers needed for the celebration of the Mass. The English translation of all the prayers of the Sacramentary are currently under revision by the eleven national bishops’ conferences where English is used as a liturgical language.

When the new translation is published, the attentive listener may notice that the prayers will have a more complex sentence structure.

We aim to help people appreciate these prayers.

Of course a visit to Troy, Kansas, would not be complete without a piece of Genie’s square pie made from scratch and served on the town square with a side dish featuring a home-made cinnamon roll. Sitting around the table covered in the vernacular red and white oil cloth, Genie Ricklefs, who served as a catechist in St. Charles’ parish when I was pastor there, and Peggy Stanton, who served as the pastoral administrator, and I renewed old friendships, recounting our accomplishments in tiny Troy now published abroad, and we heard Doc’s words ring true once again: Appreciating the Liturgy will not amount to a hill of beans until it can be brought to the Home Place Restaurant and appreciated over a piece of square pie and a home made cinnamon roll.

Father Meinrad Miller, Father Brendan Rolling, Brother Joseph Ryan and Father Marion Charboneau accompanied more than 150 Benedictine College students and 17 Maur Hill Mount Academy students to the 36th Annual March for Life in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 22, 2009. The students spent close to 24 hours (one way) on charter buses journeying to the nation’s capital to give voice to the million-plus children who lose their lives to abortion each year in the U.S. The MHMA group traveled with the Archdiocese, while BC 10

coordinates its own trip to the March each year.

Father Matthew Habiger conducted a Natural Family Planning weekend at St. Thomas More parish, Kansas City, Mo., January 10-11, and in St. Theresa Parish, Wellington, Fla., Jan., 16-18.

Brother Peter Karasz, claustral oblate of the community, has made a new three-ply oak door for placement in the doorway between the monastery and the south courtyard. The new door replaces an oak door that had become badly deteriorated; however, the stained glass center piece and the classic hardware of the old door look right at home in the new door.

Brother Anthony Vorwerk and Jim Carter have constructed a number of new birdhouses for placement on the grounds and for sale in the abbey gift shop.

They help Brother Leven Harton as he builds wire mesh protective screens to keep the bees off of his peanut plants; he is striving to retain the purity of peanut strains by preventing cross-pollination.

Father Hilary Heim (1923-1999)

truly gifted man, if not a genius, Homer Heim was born in Rural Leavenworth Coounty, Kan., July 11, 1923. This date is, of course, the Feast of St. Benedict. Homer breezed through Hund School in Leavenworth County with the reputation of knowing more than the teacher in the one-room school. He attended high school at Immaculata, the Catholic High School in Leavenworth. Again, the courses were of little challenge and he finished in three years all his credits and so he spent his senior year taking courses of his choice.

Homer Heim came to Atchison, entered Saint Benedict’s College, made first vows on his birthday, July 11, 1943, did his theology at the Abbey and was ordained May 22, 1949. “From 1949 when he began teaching mathematics at St. Benedict’s College until 1971, when the college merged with Mount St. Scholastica College to become Benedictine College, his field was academics and administration”; a quote from the Abbey death notice. He was Manager of the bookstore, dorm prefect, Dean of Men, Admissions Director and Dean of Studies. Father Hilary received a doctorate in statistics from the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley.

In 1972 Abbot Thomas Hartman asked him to manage the relationship of the Abbey to the Social Security Administration. In 1973 Abbot Brendan asked him to be the procurator or the business manager of the community. He took on the job with his usual preciseness, dedication, and thoroughness. He was a good steward who at the request of Abbot Brendan learned the ins and outs of the stock market, managed the farm interests, took care of the cars, and dispensed cash to the monks.

In 1992 he saw the wisdom of selling some of our bottom Land, now Benedictine Bottoms, a land and wildlife preserve, and investing the money into an Abbey health care fund. In 1988-89 he was the last chair of a renovation committee that devised the plan to renovate the first and ground floors of the Abbey as an Editor’s Note: Abbot Owen Purcell is at work compiling a necrology of St. Benedict’s Abbey, a volume of brief profiles on each of the deceased members of the Abbey from its founding to the present. This document offers a thorough, poignant and often entertaining

infirmary. That renovation was blessed in October 1989.

Father Hilary stepped out of office in 1994 and worked around the abbey gathering and shelling walnuts and planting trees. He did love and cherish trees. He cleaned up the remains of a fire at the old hay barn north of the Abbey and tore down the old pump house by the east gate along the River Road north of the Abbey plus some other buildings by the old saw mill.

He felt the need to serve the community as a priest in residence at Sts. Peter and Paul, Seneca. A physical exam before he undertook this work revealed a heart problem. Nonetheless he took his first parish assignment outside of weekend supply. The parishioners liked him during his short time there. He died suddenly of a heart attack March 9.

Father Hilary was a truly brilliant and unselfish man, as interested in trees and baseball as in the stock market and raising soy beans. He traced the ups and downs of “pork bellies” on a daily basis. He loved to visit and his opinions were sought. When he talked in Chapter, people listened.

Clothed with Faith God’s Will In Our Lives I

recently had the good fortune to read through substantial sections of Pope Benedict XVI’s new book Jesus of Nazareth.

In the second chapter of Jesus of Nazareth where Pope Benedict treats the temptations of Christ, our Holy Father points to an insightful connection between Satan tempting Christ in the desert and the passers-by at the foot of the Cross. What is common to both the Antichrist and these nameless individuals is the identical challenge that is hurled at Jesus by both parties, “If you are the Son of God do _____.”

The connection is, of course, a corresponding unbelief and skepticism in the hearts of Satan when he is tempting Christ and those mocking our crucified Lord; both parties demand that God prove Himself to them. Shortly after reading this penetrating reflection by Pope Benedict, I was amazed, as I prayed over a different section of Matthew’s Gospel, to find another layer of parallel.

In Chapter 14 we find the apostles alone, out in a boat, at the darkest point in the night, weathering a violent storm. At this moment Christ approaches, causing the apostles to be terrified as they cry out, “It is a ghost!” Peter, after being encouraged by Jesus to “take heart,” reacts to the experience differently, saying, “Lord, if it is you, bid me to come to you on the water” (v. 28). If we are to take this “you” to mean Jesus, the Son of God, this entreaty by Peter could be recast as similar the first half of the challenge of Satan and the passersby: “Lord, if you are the Son of God…” Simon Peter, however, reveals a very different attitude from the noted disbelief in the second half of the challenge by designating not Christ but himself as the person who needs to act. What is at stake here?

It seems to me that, for the person seeking God’s will in his or her life, who has prayed and reflected and reasoned about a decision to be made, there are really only two attitudes to take, which are contrasted in the above parallels.

An individual who feels pulled to religious life may want to be certain that what they are confronting is Christ, that Jesus is really in the desire they experience. And often the challenge to Christ’s identity comes out, “Lord, if it is you pulling me along in this movement of my heart do ______. Give me a sign!” In this, the discerning

person dictates what it is that will bring them to act on the motions of their heart, they themselves decide what it is that will be enough for them to move. What a difference in Peter’s statement, “Lord, if it is you calling me, direct me to something extraordinary, self-sacrificing, and demanding, and I will do it without Brother Leven Harton hesitation!” How beautiful is the impulsive faith of Simon Peter, eager to act, eager to take a step toward Christ!

And how much common wisdom there is in this approach to discernment. For it is not in some cerebral analysis of possibilities and contingencies that one finds a vocation. Nor is it in a correspondence of external occurrences that can be offered as some type of universally recognizable justification. A vocation is found in the experience of living for God, that is, in the experience of the life that one is drawn toward. This modus operandi can be found in discerning married life. It is very rare that one thinks twice about taking a first date with a man or woman simply because the desire to do so has an obscure source. Why not understand discernment of the religious vocation in the same light? Why not intuitively trust the desire one finds in oneself for a life devoted explicitly and solely to God as readily as one trusts an attraction to a member of the opposite sex? Why not take that first step toward Jesus by talking to a vocation director or attending a retreat? This is the mindset that Peter exhibited in his own journey toward our Lord’s call, one to which he responded “immediately” (Mk 1:18).

Let us pray that God inspires many young people to answer the call to religious life with the same zeal that Peter demonstrates. For while a step out onto the water does look awfully precarious, it is a step toward Christ, and that is the most secure step one can take.

spring 2009 The bright young student, the son of nobility, fled to the hills to escape what he viewed as a city overrun with debauchery and sloth. He was certain Rome would succumb to its sins and that it would drag him down with it if he weren’t vigilant. Reclusive, living off the land, seeking shelter in a cave, this pious hermit eventually was sought out by others, who claimed they hungered for his leadership.

The bits and pieces that are known about the life Benedict of Nursia have survived the past 1,500 years with the hearthside echoes of legend, captured for posterity and for their Christian wisdom, by the quill and parchment of St.Gregory the Great in his Dialogues.

Tales tell of his followers, who came to bristle under his discipline, attempting to poison him, only to watch his goblet shatter before when he blessed it. Another attempt to off him was foiled when a Raven flew through the window snatched poisoned bread from Benedict’s hand and carried it away. There are tales of miracles. Of Benedict raising young men from the dead, of casting a demon from a large boulder so that his monks could lift it during the construction of a monastery, and watching his twin sister Scholastica’s soul ascend to heaven in the form of a dove.

However, what St. Benedict of Nursia is best known for is his Rule, a slender volume written in the mid-sixth century, which describes spiritual doctrines and a rhythm of daily life practiced in a community. He is universally known as the father of Western Monasticism.

On the following pages, through the eyes of some members of St. Benedict’s Abbey, we will explore the three vows proclaimed by Benedictine monks—Obedience, Conversatio morum, (roughly translated as “conversion of life,”), and Stability—as they embark on a lifelong journey, guided by Benedict’s Rule.

In the time between when he left Rome and when he wrote his Rule, St. Benedict gained timeless wisdom that in its simplicity, yearning and humility has had much to offer people for centuries. Although a bit dry in places, the =, especially in its prologue, bursts with promise, optimism and expectation. This document, written by a gentle but practical abbot, remains as relevant today as ever. If only—and herein lies the entire challenge, and in the 21st century, the problem—one is willing to listen with humility.

Lay Catholics and Protestants, diocesan priests and popes, corporate CEOs and recovering alcoholics and drug addicts. Diverse are the people who have found inspiration, serenity and direction in Benedictine spirituality.

This year is my tenth as an employee of Benedictine monks. In that time many monks and women religious have become treasured friends who have shown that all are worthy of unconditional love. A monk married my wife and me, baptized my children, is godfather to my youngest daughter. Monks and sisters taught me the comforting tenet that progress not perfection was to be sought in life. They have demonstrated the richness of a mature and unswerving prayer life. They have helped me understand the importance of community, not only its value to my progress as a human being, but also my own gift as a witness to it. They have unwrapped the wonder of silence. And they have revealed that obedience with humility is liberating rather than restricting.

The presence of Benedictines in our world, the monastery on the hill, people of deep faith gathering four, five or six times a day to lift the world to God in prayer, is something to behold. The secret, like with great art, is that you can’t appreciate it and learn from it unless you slow down, indeed, unless you come to a complete stop. The kind of stop that creates a moment in which you can feel your pulse slowing and hear the rhythm of your own breathing.

Like a family heirloom, Benedictine monasticism is to be treasured and protected.

Like an heirloom it is filled with great beauty, instilled with tradition. It is a reminder of what we value. It is passed on quietly from generation to generation, a fragile inheritance handed down with great hope that future generations will value and sustain it as ancestors have. Cultures have tried to destroy it—to be sure our current culture is inadvertently making an attempt—but a select few keep it alive and it withstands the test of time. That select few are not only those men and women who answer the call to a monastic vocation. They are simply the caretakers who are fortunate enough to hold out the monastic life and present it to the rest of us as a gift of great insight, peace and spiritual progress.

Obedience, conversion and stability. These are three gifts that Benedict handed down to his followers. Through Benedictine hospitality, they offer them to their friends outside the monastery—that is if we are willing to slow down, take a deep breath, and listen.

Coversatio morum is a vow that is at once a goal and its own reward. A vow confused by translations from ancient Latin yet with a clear moral dictate. A vow specifically monastic in observance of chastity and poverty yet universally Christian in its search for daily spiritual progress.

Conversatio morum, conversion through a monastic way of life, reiterates the other two, obedience and stability, while chastity and poverty, the evangelical counsels vowed by other religious orders, are understood within it.

Conversatio morum has long been debated among Benedictine scholars. It was unclear whether Benedict meant explicit conversion to the monastic way of life, in other words to life in a community under a rule and an abbot, or if he meant conversion of behavior and morals.

Most scholars have come to believe that he meant both. First, the monk vows conversion to the monastic way of life and all that it holds. Implied in that is personal conversion of morals. In other words, a search for Christ that begins anew each day.

The key to conversion can be found in a word that unlocks the first sentence of the Rule—“Listen.” Listen in the silence of the monastery, listen in prayers of the choir, listen in the texts of Lectio Divina (“Holy Reading”), listen in reception of assignments from the abbot, listen in conversations between confreres. In Chapter 7, at the end of his 12 Steps of Humility, Benedict notes that the monk “will now begin to observe without effort, as though naturally, from habit, no longer out of fear of hell, but out of love for Christ, good habit and delight in virtue.”

Father Meinrad Miller says Benedict promised that “conversion of life is not going to be a burden.”

Ideally, the monk comes to see the monastic life as the Holy Spirit at work on his soul, Father Meinrad explains.

“To live this sort of life you have to accept Christ every day,” he says. “It becomes natural, it becomes habit, it becomes love.”

Life under the Benedictine Rule is a “gentle, non-aggressive acceptance of things, people and places as they are,” says retired Abbot Owen Purcell. “It’s an inclusive thing, non-dogmatic; it doesn’t slap you in the face with a big code of laws.”

“Benedict was a man who had been there and done that and he saw a better way, a man of personal experience and wisdom, a man imbued with the best monastic teaching of his day,” Abbot Owen says. Scholars agree that Benedict probably adapted his Rule from the Rule of the Master, a harsher and more patriarchal rule used by most religious orders of his day.

Benedict, on the other hand, hoped to “set down nothing harsh, nothing burdensome.”

“He demonstrated a temperance and breadth of vision that were rare for his time,” Abbot Owen notes. “Benedict created an ethos that takes into account human nature.”

Abbot Owen says the monk’s model of response is the Virgin Mary’s Fiat, “Let it be done to me according to your word.”

“Don’t worry about it, be led, surrender,” he says. “I’m simply

spring 2009 getting out of the way and get about living.”

Father Denis Meade says the Benedictine belief that conversion begins new each day is a source of redemption for those who falter.

“You know you can start over, that it’s OK,” he says. “That’s very encouraging to backsliders.”

There is also something invigorating to starting over each day, he says. “There are so many things that when we do them the first time we are enchanted,” Father Denis says, “but with habit they lose their enchantment. Here, we start over as if it’s the first time; the promise is to avoid staleness. That doesn’t mean immediate gratification. But if a person has a grateful heart, one will have a generous heart. You already know something good has happened, so you start again. To do the most perfect thing you can is not the point. Giving yourself to the present moment in the most generous way you can is.”

For most monks, Conversatio seems to be a vow to be taken in stride, as Abbot Owen says, to be gotten out of the way of, not to be overthought.

“Conversion of morals?” asks Father Louis Kirby. “Well, everybody has to do that. Everybody has to keep working to be better, to reforming their morals. The only difference is we do it as a vow. I guess that should help me get on the beam, but that’s what our Lord said, ‘Reform!’ That’s what St. John said, ‘Reform!’ And that’s what Benedict said.

“We better keep working on it.”

Leven Harton is a recent graduate of Benedictine College with a weakness for chocolate and acoustic rock, a statistician’s knowledge of Kansas City Royals’ baseball, and a hair-trigger wit.

But the sharp features soften, sweet tooth is satiated, and earnestness is clear in his eyes when Harton—Brother Leven Harton, O.S.B., that is—addresses his new life under the three vows expressed by every Benedictine monk—Obedience, Conversatio morum, (roughly translated as “conversion of life,”), and Stability.

Of utmost importance is obedience, the young monk says.

“Obedience to the Abbot, and by extension to the community, the renunciation of self-will, is necessary to get through all the pushing and shoving, the disappointment, the conflicts that happen in community life,” he says. “A certain amount of bowing to the other person is essential for order.”

Retired Abbot Owen Purcell calls obedience “the heart and soul of our life,” especially if we believe (as St. Benedict insists) that “the Abbot holds the place of Christ in the community.”

However, beyond providing order, obedience can be quite liberating, many monks say. Once accepted, obedience frees one from anxieties, from carrying alone the burdens of life. It frees one to humbly seek God’s will without restraint of pride and self-will.

For St. Benedict, obedience was to feel the breath of the Holy Spirit. Obedience was to listen for God’s voice in a peaceful and nurturing home.

St. Benedict begins his Holy Rule: “Listen carefully, my son, to the master’s instructions, and incline the ear of your heart. This is advice from a father who loves you; welcome it, and faithfully put it into practice. The labor of obedience will bring you back to him from whom you had drifted through the sloth of disobedience. This message of mine is for you, then, if you are ready to give up you selfwill, once and for all.

Now in his second year of monastic life, Brother Leven says he is beginning to truly see obedience bear fruit in his life.

“I must be committed not only to doing the things I have been assigned, but to doing them well and for the right reasons,” he says.

“When I perform campus ministry tasks, my motivation can’t be because I’m enjoying hanging out with people my own age; that’s a distraction. My motivation must be because my superiors have chosen the task for the purification and salvation of my soul.”

“It’s not that I can’t enjoy it, and it’s not that I’m perfect at it,” he says. “Obedience is an acceptance of one’s fallibility, which must be internalized, and that is simply the first step toward humility. Pride is the last vice to conquer. I have to recognize that it is God’s will and not mine that is being done.”

Brother Leven has experienced a richer prayer life and interior life through his commitment to the community and its daily schedule of prayer and work. “The family life is a good model for monastic life,” he explains. “I share in recreation with my brothers. I support my brothers. I bow my life and my preference of time to my brothers, just like in a family.”

Obedience can be painful, Brother Leven admits. “Our culture is so geared toward self-will,” he says. “When’s the last time you saw someone meek as a hero in a movie.

“There is a misconception that to be completely obedient is to be weak, but this vision ignores the great struggle of self-mastery,” he says. “For a person who is properly formed, obedience corrals the

spring 2009 mind so you can pray more, so that your mind is free to be lifted up to God more.”

Father Meinrad Miller agrees with his younger confrere.

He says obedience can be the most difficult vow, because it requires such trust in other people, but once surrendered to it opens the heart to God. “For me, to really own obedience in my own life is a freeing thing,” he says. “It reminds me that I’m not God, that I’m not in command, that God has a plan.” Father Meinrad says his trust in Abbot Barnabas Senecal, Prior James Albers, and the rest of the monastic community, keeps him humble, and frees him from the anxiety of self-will.

Obedience is a vow based in Scripture, Father Meinrad says.

Through the disobedience of Adam and Eve sin entered the world, and in Christ’s obedience to his Father is found the perfect model of obedience.

“Obedience is simply a longing to discover God’s will and to follow it as Jesus did,” Father Denis Meade explains, “an imitation of Christ doing the will of his Father, enfleshed by our obedience among and toward other human beings.”

Obedience, Father Meinrad notes, can be found on every page of the Rule of St. Benedict. Obedience to the abbot, obedience to the prior, obedience to the rhythm of life.

And to one another.

“Obedience is a blessing to be shown by all, not only to the abbot but also to one another as brothers, since we know that it is by this way of obedience that we go to God,” Benedict wrote in Chapter 71 of his Rule, entitled “Mutual Obedience.”

In the next chapter, “The Good Zeal of Monks,” Benedict declares that his monks should “each try to be the first to show respect to the other, supporting with the greatest patience one another’s weaknesses... No one is to pursue what he judges better for himself, but instead, what he judges better for someone else.”

To one another they show “pure love”; to God reverence, to their abbot “unfeigned and humble love.

“Let them prefer nothing whatever to Christ, and may he bring us all together to everlasting life.”

“The key,” Father Meinrad says, “is humility. The humble person is the one who looks for God’s will unfolding in every moment.”

The Rule of Benedict provides balance, dictating that while the monks are to pledge obedience to their superiors, the superiors in turn are to remain obedient to the community, always wary of pride and vainglory, and always seeking the growth and best interest of each monk under their care.

“Chapter 64 of the Rule is very consoling to me,” Father Meinrad says. The chapter, which explains what type of man the abbot will be, assures Father Meinrad that he won’t have an “ogre or tyrant” as his shepherd anytime soon.

St. Benedict says the man selected by the community to serve as abbot should “let mercy triumph over judgment” (Jas 2:13).

“By this we do not mean that he should allow faults to flourish, but rather…he should prune them away…with prudence and love as he sees best for each individual,” Benedict instructs. “Let him strive to be loved rather than feared.

“Excitable, anxious, extreme, obstinate, jealous or oversuspicious he must not be,” Benedict insists. “Such a man is never at rest.

Instead, he must show forethought and consideration in his orders, and whether the task he assigns concerns God or the world, he should be discerning and moderate.”

Benedict is simply holding his abbot to the same standard as that of each humble monk.

Passing these over, therefore, let us proceed with God's help, to lay down a rule for the strongest kind of monks, the Benedictines.

Hence, the Lord also saith in the Gospel: "He that heareth these my words and doeth them, shall be likened to a wise man who built his house upon a rock; the floods came, the winds blew, and they beat upon that house, and it fell not, for it was founded on a rock" (Mt 7:24-25). The Lord fulfilling these words waiteth for us from day to day, that we respond to His holy admonitions by our works. Therefore, our days are lengthened to a truce for the amendment of the misdeeds of our present life; as the Apostle saith: "Knowest thou not that the patience of God leadeth thee to penance" (Rom 2:4)? For the good Lord saith: "I will not the death of the sinner, but that he be converted and live" (Ezek 33:11). Now, brethren, that we have asked the Lord who it is that shall dwell in His tabernacle, we have heard the conditions for dwelling there; and if we fulfil the duties of tenants, we shall be heirs of the kingdom of heaven. Our hearts and our bodies must, therefore, be ready to do battle under the biddings of holy obedience; and let us ask the Lord that He supply by the help of His grace what is impossible to us by nature. And if, flying from the pains of hell, we desire to reach life everlasting, then, while there is yet time, and we are still in the flesh, and are able during the present life to fulfil all these things, we must make haste to do now what will profit us forever. We are, therefore, about to found a school of the Lord's service, in which we hope to introduce nothing harsh or burdensome. But even if, to correct vices or to preserve charity, sound reason dictateth anything that turneth out somewhat stringent, do not at once fly in dismay from the way of salvation, the beginning of which cannot but be narrow. For retired Abbot Owen Purcell the Benedictine vow of stability is carved in the granite of a cemetery north of St. Benedict’s Abbey.

Abbot Owen draws on a comparison with his Jesuit friends for explanation. If a person visited the Jesuit house at Rockhurst University in Kansas City after years away and learned a priest she knew had died, she would have to travel to St. Louis to visit his grave.

However, if a graduate of Benedictine College returned to St. Benedict’s Abbey after the same amount of years to find that a monk he knew was deceased, a short walk up the hill would find his grave among those of all his departed confreres.

“That to me,” he says, “is the most concrete example of stability.

It’s not that the Jesuit thing is wrong. That’s just not their charism.

The Benedictine thing is to be planted. You are planted with these guys in this corner of the world. Love me or leave me, I’m with these guys until I die—even after I die. Stability is perhaps my favorite vow. It gives me an anchor.”

Benedict’s call for stability is found in the first chapter of his Rule, “The Kinds of Monastics.”

There, he describes the four main classes of religious life common in his time. In the first sentence he states his preference for the cenobites, who lived in community, serving under a rule and an abbot.

In the business world, Father Denis Meade says, a lateral move is wrong.

“Stability doesn’t say that at all,” he counters. “Stability says being here is good.”

Father Denis says that while for some religious orders there is virtue in mobility, for Benedictines, the virtue is in staying put.

“For the same reason some people live in a house,” he explains.

“It’s good to put down roots. On an emotional level it frees one from flightiness and impulsive conduct.”

Benedict, who had lived life alone as a hermit, had come to value community for the ‘beginners’ for whom he was writing his Rule, believing that spiritual growth did not happen in a vacuum, and he insisted on obedience to a rule to prevent undisciplined and unchallenged seeking.

“When you are beginning to grow in the spiritual life,” Father Meinrad Miller says, “you are facing your own weaknesses and it’s easy to deny them and change the laws according to those weaknesses, or to move on looking on for something perfect.”

“Second, there are the anchorites or hermits,” Benedict wrote, “who have come through the test of living in a monastery for a long time, and have passed beyond the first fervor of monastic life.

Thanks to the help and guidance of many, they are now trained to fight against evil.

Benedict reserved harsh words for the third kind of monastic, the sarabites, whom he called the “most detestable.”

“With no experience to guide them, no rule to try them as ‘gold is tried in a furnace” (Prov. 27:21), they have “character soft as lead.”

Sarabites separated themselves from community to concentrate their energies on God, and in a time before the Church had codified religious life assumed the habit of monastic life without formal training.

“Their law is whatever they like to do, whatever strikes their fancy,” Benedict wrote. “Anything they believe in and choose, they call holy; anything they dislike, they consider forbidden.”

Fourth, and finally, there were the gyrovagues, who drifted from region to region, staying for guests in different monasteries.

spring 2009 “Always on the move,” Benedict wrote, “they are slaves to their own wills and gross appetites.”

Stabilitiy is more than physical, Father Meinrad says. In other words, St. Benedict’s Abbey is more than a big apartment building filled with men in habits.

“This is a true home and we must be true brothers,” he says.

Even while living in the monastery, Father Meinrad admits it is easy for a monk to frequently be away if he chooses.

“I could say yes to everything,” he says. Stability means sometimes saying no to presiding at weddings or leading retreats.

“I choose to spend time with my brothers, to enjoy being with my brothers,” he says. “Whether it’s silence, the prayer life, or welcoming guests, none of it is possible if the monks are gone.”

The monastery is the definition of home to Abbot Owen.

“I can count on the companionship of the guys I live with,” he says. “I’ve been with some of these guys for 57 years, and some of the things they’ve made it through give me courage.”

“Staying put” was a daunting prospect to Brother Leven Harton, as he neared the midway point of his yearlong novitiate. So he asked and received the blessing Abbot Barnabas Senecal and Novicemaster Father Bruce Swift to engage in a spiritual exercise to test his readiness for community life.

Calling it “Going Dark like Jack Bauer” after the popular Fox television drama “24,” Brother Leven chose during the last four months of his novitiate to sever communications with anyone from outside the monastery, including his parents, family and closest friends.

“Any illusions I might have carried that I was living solely for and rooted in my monastic community were tested,” he says. “Before that I could always look forward to the next time seeing family, the next e-mail, or the next phone call.”

During that time, he said, “my emotional support, my amusement and my entertainment had to come from my monastic community.”

Aside from the monastery being his home, Brother Leven says he gained insight into the relationship between monastic brothers.

“Prior James and Brother Simon aren’t my friends,” he says.

“They are my confreres. That is a deeper relationship. This is a person I’ve made a vow to live with. I don’t want to say it’s like a husband and wife, but it is something akin to that. This is someone I owe my life to, my channel to God.” It doesn’t always work, Father Denis admits. Like in a family, conflicts arise, and community life can expose the rough edges of relationships. But the hope is that those edges will eventually be worn smooth.

Benedict’s “Tools for Good Works,” which are laid out in Chapter 4 of the Rule, contain the keys to a strong community.

Here, Benedict asks his monks to follow the Commandments and to sow peace. “Rid your heart of all deceit,” he writes. “Never give a hollow greeting of peace or turn away when someone needs your love. Bind yourself to no oath lest it prove false, but speak the truth with heart and tongue.”

He warns them against sloth, pride and drunkenness, and more than once against speaking falsely and ill of others. “Harbor neither hatred nor jealousy of anyone, and do nothing out of envy,” he writes.

“Do not love quarreling; shun arrogance. Respect the elders and love the young…If you have a dispute with someone, make peace with that person before the sun goes down.”

And when, by chance, even the tools so readily handed out by Benedict go unused, the monastery remains home, Father Dennis says.

“And that means they can’t kick you out,” he adds with a laugh.

Humility came in a flurry for a young Tom Senecal. On a Sunday morning in 1956 on a Wichita baseball field the skinny 19-year-old pitcher recognized that the umpire was obviously blind. “He wouldn’t call enough strikes for me,” Tom remembers 52 years later. “I guess it was our punishment for playing on a Sunday. We won the trophy for coming the greatest distance.”

Today, Tom, or Abbot Barnabas as he’s known by most people, sees lessons in humility all around him.

“Humility is playing basketball for the Runnin’ Revs and never being able to score any points,” he laughs. “Humility is walking through the airport in Brazil and a group of kids start pointing at my big feet and going ‘Hee hee hee!’”

Humility is never learning a second language, he says, or picking out a worn, ill-fitting habit upon entering the novitiate, or being grabbed by his uncle Lucien during Latin translation and receiving the reprimand, “E Gods, Barnabas, don’t be so damn literal!”

Humility, Abbot Barnabas says, is accepting old age and, most difficult of all, the title of abbot.

St. Benedict of Nursia would approve.

“Brothers, divine Scripture calls to us saying: ‘Whoever exalts themselves shall be humbled, and whoever humbles themselves shall be exalted’ (Luke 14:11; 18:14),” Benedict wrote in Chapter 7, where he introduced his “Twelve Steps of Humility.”

Benedict’s “Magna Carta of humility,” as Benedictine Sister Joan Chittister puts it, “directs us to begin the spiritual life by knowing our place in the universe, our connectedness, our dependence on God for the little greatness we have. Anything else, he says, is to find ourselves in the position of a ‘weaned child on its mother’s lap,’ cut off from nourishment, puny, helpless—however grandiose our images of ourselves—and left without the resources necessary to grow in the spirit of God.” No infant child, Sister Joan says, is independent of its mother.

Likewise, “no spiritual maturity can be achieved independent of a sense of God’s role in our development.”

Abbot Barnabas points out that while humility isn’t a vow professed by monks, it is the foundation upon which those vows are lived.

“If you are an egotist you will have a hard time in community life,” he notes. “You don’t do things here for your own glory. You respond to the needs of the community. Hopefully you get to work in areas where you have the capacity to do things well. But you don’t have a constant sense of being able to advance in a career. You have to do well at whatever assignment you are given. You learn to see yourself as others might see you.”

The Abbot notes that while married people raising a family must be consistently aware of contributing to an income and supporting a family, monks don’t carry that same burden.

While still mindful of their contribution to the community, they are freer to move from assignment to assignment depending on the community’s immediate need and without worry about advancement

in a career.

Humility, he says, means that the monk doesn’t view this as a suppression of self, but rather a growth of self, a gaining of selfknowledge.

“There needs to be an honest self-awareness so that obedience doesn’t make you small or limited but instead broadens you so that you don’t become identified in one way,” Abbot Barnabas explains.

In his own experience, Abbot Barnabas experienced that growth when he went from being the headmaster of Maur Hill Academy to serving as assistant pastor in a parish, principal of a grade school, and finally abbot of his community.

“That was my biggest challenge,” he admits. “I didn’t see myself as prepared to be the leader of the community of monks. I had not lived in the monastery since ordination, and had not been a continuing reader of monastic literature, both theory and practice. The community asked me to be abbot, and I accepted. I’ve tried to be present to them and to their needs.”

Stability, also a vow professed by Benedictine monks, requires humility as well, Abbot Barnabas says. “For Benedict it was stability of place; he didn’t want his people wandering around, but as the centuries have passed on it has become a stability of commitment,” he notes. “It does take humility to stay put, to keep doing well at what you’re asked to do, though at times you may feel, gosh, I might be better somewhere else; to keep accepting the good I can do right here.”

Benedict’s 12 Steps implore his monks to reverence, obedience, surrender of self-will, patient endurance of suffering, contentment, self-reproach, restraint of speech, and seriousness.

“If the twentieth century has lost anything that needs to be rediscovered, if the Western world has denied anything that needs to be owned, if individuals have rejected anything that needs to be professed again, if preservation of the globe in the twenty-first century requires anything of the past at all, it may be the commitment of the Rule of Benedict to humility,” Sister Joan writes.

She adds that Benedict would call false the modern principles of “getting ahead” and “being on top.”

Benedict wrote, “we descend by exaltation and ascent by humility.”

Sister Joan writes: “The goals and values of the spiritual life, in other words, are just plain different from the goals and values we’ve been taught by the world around us. Winning, owning, having, consuming, and controlling are not high posts of the spiritual life.

And this is the basis for social revolution in the modern world.”

The view from the abbot’s office has deepened his understanding of humility, he says. He says he sees more clearly his own weaknesses and hopes he has been more resolute in his observation of what Benedict sought in the relationship between confreres who seek to live with humility.

“When you are living with people in community you really are here for the other person, to do what is in their best interest, to help them fulfill their capacities to the best of their abilities,” he says.

“Whether it’s the person next door to you or down the hall or in the choir, your basic approach should be not as their critic but as their support.”

5. Self-revelation “Concerning this,” Benedict says, “Scripture exhorts: ‘Make known your way to the Lord and hope in him’ (Ps 36[37]:5). And again, ‘Confess to the Lord, for he is good; his mercy is forever (Ps 105[106]:1; Ps 117[118]:1).” Reflection, insight, growth, discernment; all the result of honestly removing our masks and opening ourselves to criticism from those we trust.

6. Contentment Quit climbing the ladder of success and find happiness in each task, in each role.“A monk is content with the lowest and most menial treatment,” Benedict says, “and regards himself as a poor workman in whatever task he is given.”

7. Self-reproach Remain in touch with our frailties, and never forget our place as children of God. Benedict quoting Scripture: “It is a blessing that you have humbled me so that I can learn your commandments” (Ps 118[119]:71,73).

8. Obeying the common Rule Benedict not only wished for peace in his community, but also that his monks be willing to take up teachers to guide them on their path.

9. Restraint of speech “In a flood of words you will not avoid sinning” (Prov 10:19) and “a talkative man goes about aimlessly on earth” (Ps 139[140]12).In a Rule that so values listening, it is easy to see that too much chatter might get in the way.

10. Seriousness Humor in the monastery is expressed gently and with sensitivity by the humble man.“We are not given to ready laughter,” Benedict says.

11. Gentle words “We speak with becoming modesty, briefly and reasonably, but without raising our voices,” Benedict says, “as it is written: ‘The wise are known by few words.’”

12. Humble bearing We must act gently and without arrogance in all we do. Humility is central to our relationship to God, to others and to all of God’s creation. “We always manifest humility in our bearing no less in our hearts, so that it is evident at the Opus Dei, in the oratory, the monastery or the garden, on a journey or in the field, or anywhere else,” Benedict says.

Journey Forward

The Journey Forward capital campaign for St. Benedict’s Abbey reached a crossroads as the year 2009 opened.

A significant milestone was met in the closing months of 2008 as the Abbey completed payment on the first phase, the $2.2 million Accessibility Project. Including an initial $464,000 set aside from some generous bequests, the entire project was paid for friends and benefactors.

“In 1876 Abbot Innocent Wolf gave our Abbey the motto, ‘The Lord Will Provide,’ and we have found those words of faith prophetic,” Abbot Barnabas Senecal said. “Almost always, the Lord has provided through the generosity of those we love and those who love us. This campaign has been an example of that.”

Currently the Abbey has approximately $300,000 in cash gifts set aside for completion of the campaign’s final two projects—replacement of the monastery windows and replacement and repair of the monastery roof—and another $800,000 still out in pledges. Neither project will begin until the cash on hand is closer to the cost of at least one of the projects.

Replacing the Abbey’s 80-year-old windows—all 885 of them— with energy-efficient models is a major priority. This could potentially cut the Abbey’s gas utility bills in half and its electricity bills by 15 to 20 percent.

It is estimated that the highly specialized replacement project on such a historic building will cost approximately $1.2 million.

It is expected that the Abbey’s other capital project, replacement and repair of its slate roof, will cost about $800,000.

The campaign has now moved within $900,000 of its ultimate goal of $4.2 million.
