early 600 people were guests on the College campus Feb. 4-5. Half were high school seniors compeing for Presidential and Dean Scholarships for the coming year. Half were accompanying family members.

They were guests of Benedictine College at a wonderful dinner. Dr. Michael Boland, a graduate of 1981, welcomed them before the meal. He credited BC with instilling in him a desire to be a life-long learner, to serve others in significant ways, and to build upon Christian faith as a platform for decisions and values. He is a neurosurgeon working in three hospitals in St. Louis, Mo., and offering his skillful surgery to citizens of Guatemala on an annual service trip there, and by having youngsters from Latin America live with his family as he tends to their medical needs in St. Louis. What a wonderful spokesman for college hopefuls to hear on the evening before they were to give their best in formal interview and in spontaneous essay writing on a topic that had not been previously announced.

The Admissions Office had asked that I follow Dr. Boland by giving a Benediction. I had sketched these notes and had written a verse that I sang to the musical line of “The Servant Song,” “Hunger is an experience. Some hunger passes when we are fed. Some hunger persists when we learn a little and want more. Some hunger persists when we compete alongside equals. Some hunger Benedictine College engineering persists when we love and students cooperate on a project. are loved in return. May we hunger throughout our lives.”

The Servant Song’s third verse: “When you come to Benedictine, you will learn to work and pray. Time alone and time together, learn of self and of the Lord.”

Benedictine College’s tight-knit community life has been one reason for a steady increase in enrollment.

You know, even the psalmist knew about ravens. The next morning we prayed Psalm 147 and these verses rang out: “(The Lord) covers the heavens with clouds, provides rain for the earth, makes grass sprout on the mountains, gives animals their food and (gives) ravens what they cry for.” Each of the 288 high school seniors desires to join these ravens who call to the Lord in familiar ways. Each has proven abilities and we welcome them all. Five will win full-tuition scholarships and five will win 75-percent scholarships. Others sholarships are available as well.They will join Benedictine men and women in “calling upon the Lord.” Students may join the religious communities in the Liturgy of the Hours. Students may pair with the Benedictine Sisters as Prayer Partners.

May the Lord of the Psalmist answer all our needs. May our hungers persist and give us the momentum to move “Forward, Always Forward,” in our response to other’s needs and in pursuit of a virtuous life.

Abbey to Begin Capital Campaign Feasibility Study

T

hree monks gathered on a bluff in Doniphan County more than 150 years ago to bring monastic life to Kansas. Collectively, for hundreds of years, our monks have been serving Jesus Christ and providing a place of spiritual retreat for thousands of Christians from our historic monastery in scenic Atchison. St. Benedict’s is truly a one-of-a-kind spiritual community.

As sponsors of Benedictine College and Maur Hill-Mount Academy, and as pastors in area parishes and chaplains in hospitals, convents and prisons, the monks gather to them the faithful seeking community in Christ, as did their predecessors on the frontier. The monks open their hearts and home to guests by the hundreds with Benedictine hospitality, welcoming each person as Christ, true to the Rule of Benedict, as did their three rustic spiritual ancestors. And within that monastery and its adjoining Church, the monks do their most important work. They gather four times daily to lift the world to God in prayer in the Liturgy of the Hours and the Eucharist.

Naturally, serving so many people and running an active Abbey leads to unique facility and fiscal challenges. As a result, the Abbey has embarked on a feasibility study to determine if now is the time to begin a capital stewardship campaign to address several pressing needs. We are actively pursuing suggestions and advice from the friends of the Abbey to help us with such an important decision. After nearly a century of ministry, the monks’ home is in need of renewal. It will require an effort of those gathered within, but also from those the monks have touched – to teach, to welcome, to pray for, to advise, to provide with spiritual direction, and to offer the sacraments. Additionally, we face long-term maintenance issues, as well as providing healthcare and retirement funds for our monks. As our leaders have sought God’s will for the Abbey, they have chosen to embark on a feasibility study to determine if now is the time to address these critical needs. We know that by following this process of prayer and discernment, God will lead our steps and help us build consensus for this vision to restore and strengthen the Abbey.

Financial Considerations

The Abbey has identified needs of approximately $3 million to renew our monastery home, both spiritually and physically. Half of the money we hope to raise will go toward replacement of the 885 windows in our historic monastery and repairing our monastery’s slate roof. Replacing more than 12,000 square feet of old metalpaned windows would cut the Abbey’s gas usage by an estimated 50 percent and electricity usage by 15-to-20 percent. At current utility costs, that would save the Abbey more than $26,000 a year, not to mention the decrease in wear and tear on furnaces and air conditioning units. The other half of the $3 million raised would go toward endowments for planned giving, vocations and education to provide for the future of our community and its apostolates; for healthcare and retirement for monks who have dedicated their lives to good works; and for maintenance of facilities and grounds.

The Urgency

The issues facing St. Benedict’s Abbey are urgent. The sooner we are able to repair the windows, the sooner we will recognize the sizable savings and allow us to be better stewards of our natural and financial resources. Additionally, the needs of our monks are real and need to be addressed immediately. It seems clear that the time to act is now. Your prayers and participation in this process matter greatly. We are thankful for all that God has provided our Abbey. Now we look to Him to help us move into this phase of restoring our house of worship and providing for our monks.

We pray that God would lead and provide for the Abbey to move forward by faith to meet these needs and challenges. Thank you for taking the time to complete the survey. We will report the results in an upcoming issue of Kansas Monks.

Father Gervase Burke 1901-1965

devotee of the comic strip character, Popeye, and a recipient of an original message from Popeye’s cartoonist, E.E. Segar, Father Gervase Burke died of cancer. He had been diagnosed in 1963 and The Kansas City Star interviewed him six months before his death.

He was at peace about his situation and told the reporter, “You’re going to die too, you know… the only difference between you and me is that I know the time. At death man is meeting not his end but his fulfillment. You can’t change the ending.

The real ending of the play is that the character has fulfilled himself.”

Father Gervase was born in Wheaton, Kan., came to St. Benedict’s College and made first profession July 2, 1921. He completed college in Atchison and completed theology studies at He Father Gervase served as an army Sant’Anselmo. earned a master’s in chaplain during World War II. English at the University of Toronto. He was a popular dean of men, prefect at St. Joseph’s Hall, teacher of English, book reviewer and wit.

During World War II Father Gervase was a chaplain in the U.S. Army, stationed in Dakar, which is near Senegal in Western Africa. He loved the troops and the warm weather and thereafter was never warm again. He often wore his Army greatcoat to early morning prayers at the abbey and was known to use a Zippo lighter to warm his hands at prayer. Once as chaplain he demonstrated his wit in a piece for the Bonjour the West African Army Weekly, addressing controversy over “obscenity” in the USO shows.

“I suffered them, I suffered from them, I suffered for them and I suffered with them,” he said of the “entertainers.” “They were off color because they were below par, they had dirt because they didn’t have talent, and they were filthy because they weren’t funny.” He called the entertainment not so much a threat to the morality of the soldiers but rather an insult to 90% of the servicemen and women who viewed 6

them. “I am a chaplain,” he said. “Of course I am interested in the morals of mens . . . But please note that I am not complaining that these shows lower a soldier’s morals . . . I am simply complaining that they insult his intelligence.”

That same wit carried over to the classroom.His excuse for not giving “A” grades was that the last time he gave one the Civil War started.

Father Gervase maintained a practical view of life and death until the end, but never lost his zeal for living.

Every Benedictine Needs his Baseball ‘ ’ Father Gervase Burke, the redoubtable English teacher at St. Benedict’s College from about 1933 to 1963, was probably the greatest baseball fan in the history of St. Benedict’s Abbey. Father Gervase liked other sports, such as football, and one of my most vivid college memories is of him attending college basketball games while at the same time reading books. The books did not seem to interfere with his enjoyment of basketball, nor did the games seem to diminish his enjoyment of reading.

But baseball was his real love. The Kansas City Athletics had come to town by then. When things were not going well, Father Gervase would go about saying in a loud voice, “Oh, those A’s!”

Even when preaching he might slip in, “Oh, those A’s!” at appropriate times.

Father Gervase died before the Royals came to Kansas City. He would have rejoiced at their World Series victory. At their current

Many oblates pray part of the Liturgy of the Hours daily or at least with some frequency, but I imagine very few ever are able to pray the Hour of Vigils. This hour used to be called Matins and was the night office of the monks. It was prayed sometime after midnight and consisted of a good number of psalms and readings from the Old and New Testaments plus readings from the Fathers of the Church. The Vatican Council shortened this office to two or three Psalms, a reading from Scripture and one from a reliable orthodox source, usually a Father of the Church (but it can also come from a more modern writer). Many Trappist monasteries still pray this hour around 3 a.m., often with only several monks reading in a darkened church, while the rest of the community listens. It is a very reflective office.

Here at the abbey we pray this office daily at 6:20 a.m., and follow it immediately with Morning Prayer. The entire office takes about 35 to 40 minutes; slightly longer on Sundays and solemnities when the gospel of the day is added and the office ends with the great hymn of praise –the Te Deum. The Psalms prayed at this hour of office are reflective and challenging.

Here at the abbey our office is on a four-week cycle, and during that time we pray a number of Psalms at Vigils: Psalms 18, 89, 68, 132, 63, 104, 139, 107, 10, 91, 78, 105, 106, 44, 78, 37, 94, 14, 49, 53, 25, 11, 71, 52, 77, 82, 79, 140, 22, 38, 74, 6, 69, 55, 102, 42, 43, 35, 13, 17, 61, 109, 31.

SPRING 2011 doldrums he would probably say, “Oh, those Royals!”

The Royals seemed a little better this year than last. Their hitting improved and the team was rarely completely out of a game. There is no question that they need better pitching. It is sad to see Zack Greinke traded since he was one of the few Royals with whom fans have had Father Michael Santa some identification. Such identification is important for the growth of a baseball tradition.

We can learn from Gervase Burke that it is important for a monk to have a vicarious identification with something. It takes us out of our own limited world and helps take an interest in others.

It might be a local sports team, a saint, a politician, or some other public personality. Here at the abbey we monks are working on what is called a “Customary.” It is a little book that describes how a monk ought to behave in his daily life. Maybe it should have a sentence that says, “Each monk should have a strong vicarious identification with organizations or persons outside the monastery.”

A good prayer experience might be to take a Psalm and read it very slowly and then reread it. Try to find a line or two that speaks to you.

Don’t be concerned if the rest of the lines don’t seem to say anything at the time. Look at Psalm 140 for example.

Maybe a verse strikes a note with you.

Verse 7 – “I say to the Lord, you are my God; hearken, O Lord to my voice Brother John Peto in supplication.” This particular verse Director of Oblates might have a very strong meaning to someone begging something from God at a particular time. Hang on the verse throughout the day. Psalm 109’s first verse might be a real help – “O God, whom I praise, be not silent…” Just the first half of the verse may speak to someone who has been asking God for something and is growing weary of asking, who is now not afraid to challenge God a bit. Verse 14 in Psalm 77 brings forth a different aspect of our relationship with God – “O God, your way is holy; and what great god is there like our God?” The above is, of course, a form of Lectio Divina, bringing the Psalms into real life by using the prayers that Jesus prayed.

Sometimes I have a question from an oblate about his or her membership when they live a great distance from Atchison or are not able to attend meetings for other reasons. Once you have made your oblation you are an oblate of the abbey as long as you wish. I use this magazine as the primary form of communication with oblates but would be most happy to send you more frequent communications via e-mail or regular mail if you would so desire.

Every month I send out an email and mail a few copies of news of a more personal nature to oblates who attend meetings or have requested more news. This little newsletter has more names and more information about what is going on here at the abbey.

clergy and diocesan communication officers; and medical professionals and hospital administrators and staff.

Speakers will include: Dr. Janet Smith, chair of Life Ethics at Sacred Heart Major Seminary, Detroit, Mich.; Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann of the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas; John Allen Jr., Vatican analyst for CNN and National Public Radio, All Things Catholic at the National Catholic Reporter, and author of “The Future Church;” Dr. Robert P. George of Princeton University, co-initiator of the “Manhattan Declaration”; and Dr. Jan Hemstad, president of the Catholic Medical Association and Medical Doctors of the Catholic Medical Association. There will also be presentations by Father Matthew and his colleague in the Natural Family Planning Outreach, Father Daniel McCaffrey.

Father Matthew and his partner in the institute, Benedictine College’s Matthew Tsakanikas, a doctoral candidate at the Pope John Paul II Institute on Marriage and Family in Rome, are interested in the fence riders.

“Of Catholic gynecologists, only one percent is with us,” says Father Matthew who can quote statistics like a man who has returned to them time and again looking for something he might have missed. “That’s pathetic. The other 99 percent are part of the problem. A couple hears about God’s plan from their pastor but then goes to their Catholic ob-gyn and gets prescribed the pill. If our main allies aren’t doing what they are supposed to, we aren’t going to go very far.”

The problem, Father Matthew says, is that the doctors never received training on Natural Family Planning in medical school, and many doctors don’t understand how effective it is. They don’t realize, he says, that in many cases a couple trained in Natural Family Planning can have a more than 98 percent success rate, and that NFP is an effective way to overcome infertility.

In addition, pharmaceutical corporations that produce contraception put a lot of money and energy into influencing doctors to prescribe their products.

“There is big money in contraception,” he says.

To counter this, this summer’s institute will offer doctors 14 hours of continuing medical education credits and provide speakers that are respected medical professionals.

“We have to have peers talking to peers,” Father Matthew says. “If we can get one Catholic ob-gyn to convert that will be a success. Our goal is to get that one percent up to five percent.”

Father Matthew continues to fly to California, New York, South Carolina, Texas, New Mexico, Pennsylvania and even Africa. He goes wherever Father Matthew Habiger discusses Natural Family Planning with Benedictine he is invited, preaching the gospel of Natural College students during Social Justice Week March 3. Father Matthew travels Family Planning. The tall angular priest looks younger than his 69 years, and his zeal shows intnernationally to speak out against contraception.

8 Father Matthew Habiger understands why so many people turn a deaf ear to him.

“If something is nonsensical to you and it requires self-discipline, why bother,” he says matter-of-factly. “We have the technology, why not use it?”

He notes that 85 percent of Catholics of child-bearing age are using contraception. Of those Catholics, 40 percent have chosen sterilization. When they hear Natural Family Planning they often think of the antiquated and faulty “Rhythm Method,” he admits.

Father Matthew is bringing his experience and connections from 10 years with Natural Family Planning Outreach to a National Summer Institute co-sponsored by NFPO and Benedictine College July 11-16 on the B.C. campus. Father Matthew says the central question to the institute is: “How do you retrieve something we’ve lost: God’s plan for marriage, spousal love and family?”

Father Matthew and his counterparts in the Natural Family Planning movement directly link this use to the 50 percent divorce rate among those same Catholics. “It is corrosive to the marriage bond,” he says. “Contraception destroys the natural connection between love and life. The marital act has profound meaning. It means that the man and woman intend to make the total personal gift of self to the other. “ There are many people sitting on the fence, he says. “They know what the Church teaches, but they don’t know why. They know the dos and don’ts but they don’t know the whys. We are appealing to anyone who brings an open mind and a good heart.”

The institute, while open to the public, is focused on three primary groups: Marriage preparation and health science teachers;

Catholics still are using contraception in massive numbers.

Father Matthew and his message are received well wherever he goes.

He takes this as a sign of fertile ground. But he is blunt in his analysis. He and the relatively small band of movement champions crossing the country aren’t enough.

He is critical of pastors and even bishops who won’t take the message of God’s plan for marriage, spousal love, family and Natural Family Planning to the pulpit. He decries ignorance of NFP in the community of marriage preparation leaders.

A moral theologian, Father Matthew spent 10 years immersed in the pro-life movement, travelling internationally to spread its message and he still champions its cause and cheers the work of the U.S. Bishops in this area. But he is convinced that contraception is the “taproot feeding the culture of death,” vital to the movement. And he says many clergy are plainly afraid to speak of it from the pulpit out of a fear of hurting feelings or offending Catholics who are so overwhelmingly using contraception. “There is a price to pay for speaking out on God’s plan for marriage, spousal love and family. Some people may reject you while defending their lifestyle,” Father Matthew says. “But there also is a price to pay for our silence at the pulpit: a 50 percent divorce rate, emotionally scarred children, an 80 percent cohabitation rate, an 85 percent contraception rate with 40 percent of those couples now sterilized and a drought of vocations to the priesthood and religious life. We clergy must decide which price we are willing to pay.”

The Summer Institute, which was made possible thanks in part to a grant from Our Sunday Visitor, which paid for almost all publicity, will be an annual event.

But Father Matthew calls it simply a step in the right direction.

“These values need to be in every diocese,” he says. “It needs to be in every parish.”

In the meantime, Father Matthew continues to travel and talk to anyone who is interested. He sends an e-mail newsletter to 450 editors, family life directors and Natural Family Planning coordinators across the country. He writes columns. He delivers homilies. He takes heart that anything good must happen one person at a time.

“Here I am in my Podunk room at my computer,” he says with a laugh. “Just look at the damage I can do.”

The large chapel at Mount St Scholastica has such a ciborium over its altar, and the big chapel at St. Benedict’s Abbey has a projection in the ceiling directly above the altar to express the divine self-gift given in the gifts shared below. St. Benedict’s Parish Church, our former abbey church in Atchison, still retains its ciborium although the gifts are now placed on the new altar some distance in front.

All of these are architectural monuments to the exchange of gifts of self between humanity and divinity in the Eucharist. As we present ourselves at these altars and as we come under these ciboria time and again throughout the course of a lifetime, these monuments stand as witnesses to the many and changing ways in which we give ourselves to explore, to commit and to transcend.

In my previous column I described how, in the past, monks of St. Joseph Priory exercised creativity, initiative and leadership in their service roles. In this article, I write of on-going efforts to promote leadership through continued monastic and academic formation.

Revealing their vision and experience, during the process of monastic Visitation to Saint Prior Duane Roy Joseph Priory in December 2009, Prior - St. Joseph’s Priory both Abbot Barnabas Senecal and Abbot Joaquim de Arruda Zamith highly recommended promoting leadership among our monks.

We see that the monastic movement’s spread was concurrent with the expansion of Christianity, on all sides of the Mediterranean. What held them in common was the written word (Sacred Scripture) - radically following the Risen Lord, and giving witness of His presence.

Many monastic founders and leaders were men and women who excelled in learning. Long before monasteries became centers of learning, monks were encouraged to read and study. They were active figures in defense of the Christian heritage. Some elaborated treatises on virtuous living, theological tracts, biblical reflections and homilies, writing in Coptic, Greek and Latin. Others composed Rules for the cenobitic life–those members of a religious order living in common. Such works are not only patristic– relating to the writings of the early church fathers–but also classical literature.

There is no mold for making a monk. Instead, in formation, one must be aware of what “form” one uses. What shape, size, density, and configuration do we want? What makes a praying, fraternal and hospitable monk?

of services. In Father Eugene Dehner’s autobiography he wittily writes about his three hats: the monk´s cowl, the professor´s mortarboard, the priest´s beret.

“Educate better to serve better” was a motto used by the State Department of Education here in Goiás in the 1980s. The excellence Benedictine College maintains even today was founded on those same efforts to qualify monk professors during the years between 1930 and 1950. We also believe educational opportunities qualify monks to serve better – to be better monks.

Consider the following: Last October, Father Vinícius participated in a two-week Seminar on monastic formation, promoted by the Inter-Monastic Conference of Brazil. As diocesan coordinator of youth ministry, his leadership and enthusiasm are producing fruits.

Father Joaquim Carlos presently is in Rome for two months of intense studies on the Rule of Benedict. As a clinical psychologist, retreat master and holding other leadership roles, these studies will contribute to his vision of the Benedictine charism in today´s world.

Father Rodrigo, current pastor of a newly-formed parish, has many opportunities for leadership in planning, evaluating and initiating out-reach programs and concurrently is working on a degree in clinical psychology.

Brother Carlos Alberto, a recently professed member who already concluded three years of theological studies toward the priesthood, will begin a master´s degree in literature, specializing in translation and editing of texts.

Father Josias earned a master degree in philosophy of education 20 years ago. Among his students are leaders in all walks of life. He is a writer, retreat master, and lecturer. He contributes to the formation of young monks.

In his Circular Letter (Jan. 2011), Abbot Primate Notker Wolf shares his vision for Benedictines today in secularized and religiously indifferent societies. “Community life,” he says “is a sign of Christian love, a witness of God´s presence in the world.” He invites those of us in poorer countries to contribute–by prayer, work and study–to the development of the specific regions where we are inserted, “as was once the case in Europe.”

Acquired knowledge and qualification contributes to leadership capacity. Perhaps some consider leadership qualities less significant in monasteries or not as important as obedience. Vision of the future and conscious of signs of the times are of equal importance.

First vows, which follow a period of postulancy and a year of novitiate, last for at least three years before a monk can seek permission to profess final—permanent—vows.

of my life if I stay here,” Father Justin says. “This formation is more conducive to the balance of monastic life and the apostolic life.”

Father Justin taught high school, worked in campus ministry and prison ministry, and, of course, served as a pastor, all apostolates of St. Benedict’s. However, in his search for a new home, it was the men of St. Benedict’s, more than the ministries, that drew him to Atchison.

“I felt a lot of camaraderie with the young guys here,” he said. “We were on the same page.”

He says he has found what he sought in the daily schedule of prayer and work, and even more in the bonds of community.

“I had priest friends and great parishioners and family where I was before,” he says. “But I like the sense of community, of praying together, eating together.”

It hasn’t been without its adjustments, he admits.

“I like the sense of community, of praying together, of eating together.”

-Father Justin Dean “There are the rubs of community life, of getting to know one another,” he says. “I’m reminded of the quote from Proverbs, ‘Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.’”

With that Proverb in mind, Father Justin seemed primed to answer Abbot Barnabas’s final question of his profession homily: “Where are you going?”

“You are going forward with a commitment to the vows of obedience, stability and conversion of life,” he said. “You know that obedience is to the Rule, the Abbot and the community. You know that stability in this place and in this way of life creates definition for you, creates identity and declares intent. You know that conversion of life – that seeking to make yourself in the image of Christ – is a life-long task of opening yourself to grace and to companionship in the best sense of that word.”

The Abbot expressed his hope that Brother Christopher and Father Justin find happiness and holiness in their new home, and that they accept the challenges of community life with humility and a desire for the common good.

Brother Christopher takes the Abbot’s words to heart.

“It takes a lot of trust,” he says. “A lot of the time I don’t necessarily know what’s going on, but God probably does.”

Father Rob Fleckenstein and Father Michael Polinek made a retreat at the Abbey, Feb. 13-19.

They were seminary classmates of Father Jeremy Heppler, having studied theology at St. Vincent Archabbey Seminary in Latrobe, Penn. Father Fleckenstein is parochial vicar at St. Alphonsus, Wexford, Penn., and Father Polinek is parochial vicar at St. Joseph, Warren, Penn.

Father Marion Charboneau is teaching two courses at Benedictine College. One is a freshman class on U.S. History since 1865. The other is an upper division class on The Civil War. Father Marion has completed application for admission to doctoral studies at Kansas State University this fall.

Monks will be on Spring Break trips in midMarch. Prior James Albers will be in Haiti with a BC student group, under the guidance of Project Haiti. Father Jeremy Heppler will accompany BC students to El Salvador in coordination with CFCA. Father Brendan Rolling will accompany a pilgrimage to Rome. Also, during Spring break, Brother Simon Baker will visit St. Meinrad Archabbey Seminary.

Father Daniel Gardner, priest of the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas and an Atchison native, began a month-long stay in the monastery Feb. 1.

He was grateful to have had time for prayer, reading, quiet meditation and camaraderie with the monks. He was also able to spend time with his mother, Dorothy, a resident of Atchison. Father Dan is pastor of All Saints Parish, a consolidation of SS. Cyril and Methodius Parish and St. JosephSt. Benedict Parish in Kansas City, Kan. Trey Cocking, Atchison City Manager, and Stefanie Lief, Atchison Community Development Director, toured the Abbey church and joined the monks for Midday Prayer and lunch March 2.

Maur Hill-Mount Academy is progressing with its campus lighting project. The next pole placed will be in memory of Brother Martin Burkhard, a donation from the Klebba family. Brother Martin prefected in St. Leo’s dormitory 1978-89. He occasionally visited the Klebba home in Linn, Mo. Ten medical students from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences will began a week in the two Atchison Benedictine monasteries March 7. This is an annual elective program for students of this University, where they gain insight into the attitudes and practices of monastics in regard to death and dying.
