Streetscape Opens October 10

e are excited to announce the opening of the Downtown Streetscape & Linear Park. Join us at the roundabout intersection of West Avenue and Laureate Way, from 5:30-8 p.m., Thursday, October 10. We will celebrate with a ceremony, the Downtown Runaround (walk/run), food trucks, games, music and more.

West Avenue has been transformed into a beautiful tree-lined street that will accommodate live music, open-air dining, walking, running, a putt-putt lawn and other greenspaces perfect for reading, classes for exercise or other special events. The new streetscape also has fountains, public restrooms, swings, public art and murals.

Oak Avenue and Vance Street have also received a facelift with new sidewalks, trees, landscaping, paving and more.

Mystery Theater Returns

Mark your calendars for an exciting Mystery Theater performance at 6:30 p.m., November 15, at the Laureate Center.

Cruise Director Sunny Sails knew a lot about the passengers. When she was found murdered, who could guess what scandals died with her? Sunny Sails had her own way of handling the passengers on the ship, The Legendary Carnival. Yet, the more that was discovered about the death, the more apparent it became that Sails met her demise in an untimely fashion. Become an investigator and help the detective figure out “who dun it!”

Tickets are $20 per person in advance or $25 per person the day of. Tickets will be available at the door ($25), as long as the show is not sold out ahead of time. Discounts are available for groups purchasing 10 or more tickets. Please call 704-920-4343 to inquire about group tickets.

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Heavy hors d’oeuvres in a buffet style will be served from 5:30-6:30 p.m. The show will begin at 6:30 p.m. The show will last approximately two hours.

Alcohol (craft beer and wine from Douglas Vineyards and Cabarrus Brewing Company) will be available for purchase at the show. Valid, legal ID is required to purchase alcohol.

The show is rated PG-13, and is recommended for adults and mature teens. Tickets can be purchased online at kannapolisnc.gov/parksprograms, by calling 704-920-4343, or in person at City Hall in the Parks and Recreation Department.

Register Now for the Fall Back 5K The Fall Back 5K will start at 1:50 a.m. on November 3. (The run will take place during the time change, which happens at 2 a.m. For example, if you run a 30-minute 5K, your finish time will be around 1:20 a.m.)

We’ll have lots of fun staying awake and falling back in time! Proceeds will benefit the Fire Explorer Post. Register at runkannapolis.com.

Underneath the streets, new infrastructure has been engineered to accommodate the new businesses, sports and entertainment venue, restaurants and offices that are coming to downtown. The $30-million project also includes two new roundabouts and updated intersections designed to be visually appealing and serve as important traffic devices to slow people down as they travel through the pedestrian-oriented area.

Everyone is invited to participate in the Downtown Runaround!

Run or walk the roundabouts, which equals 1.5 miles.

The cost is $10 per person, and this is an extra credit race for the Run Kannapolis Race Series. Participants will receive a special commemorative t-shirt. To register for the Downtown Runaround, visit runkannapolis.com.

While visiting the new streetscape you will see construction on the Sports and Entertainment Venue – the new home of our minor league baseball team. The venue will open in April 2020.

You will also see the building of VIDA, the mixed-use district going up between S. Main Street and West Avenue. There are four stories of apartments above the ground level shops and restaurants. Old Armor Beer Company will also open on West Avenue this fall. This veteran-owned and operated business will offer a variety of specialty brewed beers.

A Kannapolis Christmas Begins November 23 A Kannapolis Christmas will officially kick off at Village Park with the Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at 6 p.m., Saturday, November 23.

The Celebration continues through the Christmas Holiday season with the Celebration of Lights and Winterland Express. We have added more lights and fun for you and your family to enjoy.

A Mother/Son Superhero Event Join us for A Boy and His Superhero, a mother/son event, from 6-8 p.m., Friday, November 1, at the Laureate Center. The evening will be filled with music, dancing, games, refreshments and more!

This program is designed for boys ages five and up to be accompanied by their mother, stepmother, grandmother, big sister, aunt or special lady. Dress in your best superhero costume, or be as mildmannered as the t-shirt-wearing Clark Kent.

Tickets are $40 per couple and $15 for each additional boy. Each registration also includes a 5”x7” keepsake photo!

Tickets may be purchased at kannapolisnc.gov, by calling 704920-4343, or in person on the third floor of City Hall in the Parks and Recreation Department.

Monthly Environmental Tip Enjoy live music and entertainment, kid’s activities and fireworks. Admission to the park and viewing of the lights is free; tickets to ride the train and carousel are $2 per person per ride. The park is located at 700 West C Street in Kannapolis.

Loose Leaf Collection is underway October 21-March 6, which means you do not need to bag your leaves for yard waste collection. Please help us prevent flooding by avoiding placing leaves in ditches and over storm drains.

Recycling Glass Update In July, we announced that glass was no longer acceptable in curbside recycling bins. We have negotiated with our vendor, and we are glad to announce that glass will continue to be accepted in your yellow recycling carts. Thank you for recycling!
