New Ladder Truck Gets Washdown

Calendar of Events

MAY 2018

MAY 1 Run Kannapolis - Jiggy with the Piggy 5K | 6:30 p.m. Downtown Kannapolis 1-5 Jiggy with the Piggy Downtown Kannapolis

The Kannapolis Fire Department placed a new ladder truck into service at Fire Station 5 with a traditional “washdown” ceremony. The washdown ceremony involves firefighters wetting down the new truck with water from a fire hose, backing the new ladder truck into the station and then having everyone dry off the new truck. This tradition began in the late 1880s when horses pulled pumpers to the scene of fires. When the horses were returned to the station they and the pumpers were backed into the station, and the horses and pumpers were washed down and readied for the next emergency. The new fire truck, Ladder 54, replaces a 1999 ladder truck. The ladder extends to a height of 105 feet. The new fire truck weighs 80,000 pounds, seats five firefighters, has a capacity of 300 gallons and can pump 2,000 gallons of water per minute.

Kaleidoscope Arts & Ag Festival Vendors Sought The City of Kannapolis is once again hosting the Kaleidoscope Arts & Ag Festival on Saturday, November 3, and we are seeking vendors who would like to be a part of the event. The festival will take place in Downtown Kannapolis on the North Carolina Research Campus from 12-4 p.m. The festival returns with new activities and will be the culminating event of the Rowan Arts & Ag Celebration. This event will feature the Salisbury Symphony and local artisans such as painters, jewelry makers and woodcarvers. We will celebrate the rich culture of agriculture with local breweries, wineries and goods from farmers. Registration is currently open for all arts, crafts and food vendors. This is a hand-made/home-made artisan festival. No commercial vendors will be allowed and non-profit vendors will be limited. For more info, visit www.rowanartsandag.com.

f you have been downtown recently you have seen that work is underway on the Kannapolis Streetscape and Infrastructure Project. The streetscape is designed to curve and wind through the heart of downtown – West Avenue. It will feature green and outdoor spaces that will complement the new sports and entertainment venue, apartments, retail and restaurants. It will also include improvements to Vance Street and Oak Avenue.

The unique design will allow the streets to serve as a linear park. The streetscape focuses on green spaces, encouraging pedestrian activity, outdoor dining and social hubs – all les while maintaining traffic flow using nho Installation of new ma two traffic circles and offering parking options.
