Watch for Me – Pedestrian Safety Encouraged Each year, more than 2,400 pedestrians and 960 bicyclists are hit by cars on North Carolina streets. The Kannapolis Police Department asks that you be careful whenever you cross a street. Use the crosswalk. At intersections with signage, follow the directions and walk across the street only when signage tells you to. As drivers, we need to pay attention to pedestrians. Pedestrians have the right-of-way in crosswalks – always. As the school year starts, pay close attention to areas where students, teachers and parents may be crossing our streets. During the school year, you will see officers at pedestrian and school crossings within the city conducting enforcement and education campaigns.

Our police department is a partner in the Watch for Me NC program for the second consecutive year. Watch for Me NC is a comprehensive program run by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) in partnership with local communities. It is aimed at reducing the number of pedestrians and bicyclists hit and injured in crashes with vehicles. The Watch for Me NC program involves two key elements: 1) Safety and educational messages directed toward drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists; and 2) Enforcement efforts by area police to crack down on some of the violations of traffic safety laws.
All Aboard! Council member Tom Kincaid and Mayor Darrell Hinnant
Kannapolis has been honored with a locomotive. First Lady Kristin Cooper joined state and local officials, as well as members of the community, to christen the #1984 City of Kannapolis commuter locomotive for use in North Carolina’s daily Piedmont passenger service.
“Trains have played a significant role in the economic success of our city. It is a pleasure to have this locomotive named after Kannapolis and to honor the accomplishments that have been achieved by our residents since we became an incorporated City in 1984,” commented Kannapolis Mayor Darrell Hinnant. NCDOT names its locomotives for the cities along the Charlotte to Raleigh passenger rail corridor. Each locomotive’s number corresponds to the incorporation or charter date of the city after which it is named. Through the Piedmont Improvement Program, NCDOT is investing more than $500 million in rail improvements between Raleigh and Charlotte. The program paid for a new canopy at the Kannapolis train station to protect passengers from inclement weather while waiting on the platform. The station served more than 18,000 passengers in 2016.

City to Bring Yard Waste Service Back In-House
B
eginning October 1, the City of Kannapolis will provide yard waste, limb debris and leaf collection to residents versus paying a contractor to perform the services. The City has been examining ways to improve the collection of yard waste, loose leaf, limb debris, garbage and recycling collection. Previously, the City contracted with Waste Management to provide these services to approximately 18,000 Kannapolis households. By assuming the yard waste service, the City believes Waste Management can better concentrate on its core mission of providing garbage/recycling service to residents. The City will hire staff and purchase equipment. We will not incur any additional costs for providing yard waste collection. The City will use the monies it has previously paid to Waste Management to cover the costs of providing the service in-house.
Loose leaf collection will begin Monday, October 23, and run through Friday, March 9, 2018. The City is divided into 10 zones. Collection will occur every other week Continued on page 2
