Thousands of lights decorate the parade entries, which makes this one of the holiday’s most special nighttime events in the state. Loose Leaf Collection Begins October 23 It’s Fall ya’ll, which means it’s time for leaves to fall from trees. Beginning October 23 and running until March 9, the City collects loose leaves. At all other times of the year leaves must be bagged.

State Road Projects Updated
T
he City recently received an update on the transportation projects that are planned or underway by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). Due to the growth and condition of our state roadways there are several projects happening at once. The City and NCDOT encourage everyone to be safe and follow speed limits in work zones. Additionally, please watch for timely updates on the City and NCDOT websites, Facebook and Twitter outlets. I-85 Widening Project: This project extends from N.C. 152 (Exit 68) in Rowan County to N.C. 73 (Exit 55) in Cabarrus County. The project is tentatively scheduled to be completed in 2019. N.C. 3 Widening Project: This project will widen N.C. 3 from two to four lanes from Kannapolis Parkway to Dale Earnhardt Boulevard. Clearing and utility relocation is now underway. Actual construction of the street should begin in Spring 2018. N.C. 3 Widening Project – Phase II: This project would widen N.C. 3 from Dale Earnhardt Boulevard to U.S. 601. Environmental submittal of documents is underway. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2024. Cannon Boulevard and Dale Earnhardt Intersection Improvements: Right-of-way acquisition will begin in 2018 with construction scheduled to begin in 2020. Completion will be in 2021. Kannapolis Fire Receives Sports Injury Training Before the football season started, Kannapolis firefighters received specialized training on how to respond and treat sports injury emergencies. Jim Bazluki, MAEd, LAT, ATC, a member of the North Carolina Athletic Trainers Hall of Fame, and who is on staff with Carolinas Healthcare System – NorthEast, conducted the three-day training for Kannapolis firefighters and Cabarrus EMS personnel. The Kannapolis Fire Department is onsite at Northwest Cabarrus High School and A.L. Brown High School football games. They are also the first responders to any 911 call involving any sports injuries.

Salvage Dawgs to Feature Kannapolis Downtown Revitalization Project Salvage Dawgs – one of the top three television shows on the DIY Network – has filmed an episode about the city. The episode is slated to premiere in May 2018. The show’s premise is to take items that are going to be discarded and turn them into furniture, art or other useful items. They are all about being environmentally sustainable and preserving history.

Kannapolis Installs More Bicycle Racks We’ve added two more bicycle racks in downtown. One is located near North Research Campus Drive at the Plants for Human Health Institute building. The other is in the parking lot of the NCRC Medical Plaza Building on Watson Crick Drive. Funding for the racks was provided by a grant from the North Carolina Rail Division. Two racks are already in place at the train station. The public is welcome to use the racks to store their bicycles during the day as they enjoy downtown or while they are traveling on the Amtrak train. The project is not only practical, but serves as public art. We would like to thank Hilbish Ford who professionally painted them so they are eye-catching and a beautiful addition to the NC Research Campus and our downtown.
