Leaves are banned from landfills by North Carolina law and cannot be disposed of in your garbage container. The City offers loose leaf collection Monday, October 24, 2016 - Friday, March 3, 2017. During the loose leaf collection period it is not necessary to bag leaves for them to be collected. However, if you do choose to bag your leaves, the bags will be collected weekly, the same day as your garbage is collected. Loose leaf collection will occur on ALL holidays EXCEPT Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. For those two holidays, Waste Management will operate on a one-day delay for the remainder of the week. Loose Leaf Collection Schedule There are 10 zones in the city for loose leaf collection. To determine your loose leaf collection zone, please visit www.kannapolisnc.gov. Loose Leaf Collection Dos & Don’ts • Leaves must be placed at the curb or along the ditch line – not in ditches – in rows parallel with the street. • Leaves must be clear of sidewalks and the street. • Place leaves at the curb by 7 am to ensure collection on the scheduled day. • Leaves mixed with limbs, other yard waste, sweet gum balls, gravel, glass or other solid matter will not be collected. • Leaves in garbage containers will not be collected. • Leaves must be clear of water meters and fences, and placed on the street side of retaining walls.

In 2015, U.S. fire departments responded to more than 368,000 house fires, which resulted in more than 2,700 deaths. Tragically, three out of five of these deaths were in homes with outdated or non-working smoke alarms. “Don’t Wait – Check the Date – Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years” is an important message from the Kannapolis Fire Department to you. Working smoke alarms are vital to the safety of you and your family if a fire were to occur in your home or business. Please remember to: Test smoke alarms once a month; change batteries (if applicable) every six months; and replace smoke alarms every 10 years. Need assistance with your smoke alarms? The Kannapolis Fire Department can help!* Call 704-920-4260 or complete the public education request form found on the fire department’s web page at www.kannapolisnc.gov.

*Kannapolis Fire Personnel cannot install or provide technical assistance with hard-wired smoke alarms and other safety devices. For assistance with hard-wired safety devices, please consult a master electrician.
