The Rotary Express Train and Splash Pad announce their spring/summer schedule. Both will operate on a limited schedule this spring; the first weekend to enjoy the Splash Pad is Memorial Day weekend, May 27 - 29. It will be open Saturday, from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m., and Sunday - Monday from Noon - 6 p.m. Village Park is located at 700 West C. Street.

Then, beginning June 3, the Splash Pad will be open every day for the summer: Monday - Saturday, from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m., and Sunday, from noon - 6 p.m. The last weekday the Splash Pad will be open is August 27, but it will stay open

t is going to be another great year to discover fun in Kannapolis. The City has announced its lineup of concerts, movies, special events, Intimidators Baseball and, of course, fireworks for 2017. All events are free to the public and will be held in downtown Kannapolis.

Award-winning groups Little Texas, 38 Special and Diamond Rio headline an awesome Summer Concert Series in Kannapolis. Each group will play their Grammy-nominated and country music awardwinning hits in the amphitheater at Village Park.

38 Special

The 38 Special concert is June 3 and Diamond Rio is August 12. The concert series also includes a diverse mix of musical genres such as the ever-popular Charlotte Symphony performance on June 30; Confederate Railroad on June 17; Trial By Fire and On the Border on July 15; and Too Much Sylvia on July 29.

Family Movies in the Park are every other Friday Diamond Rio night at Village Park and this year include Finding Dory, Zootopia, Peanuts, SING, Pete’s Dragon and Moana.

Stories Under the Stars returns this year at the Kannapolis Library. These special children’s events include Steve Langley, Grey Seal Puppets, Doug Berkey, Piedmont Dance Theatre and Jason Frame.

The Kaleidoscope Cultural Arts Festival returns in August and October. This festival features more than 100 local artisans such as painters, jewelry makers, woodcarvers as well as other family-friendly activities.

Join us for lunch and dinner for Thursdays on Main, with performances by Gary Lowder & Smokin Hot, Jim Quick and Coastline, Black Water Rhythm & Blues Band and Tim Clark Band.

Other events include the Kannapolis Cruise-In on the second Saturday of each month, the Fire Truck Parade and Open House, Fall Family Festival, Kannapolis Intimidators baseball games (intimidatorsbaseball.com), Christmas Events and much more.

The long-term vision of the future of Kannapolis is being developed, thanks to the work of citizens from throughout the community. This work is being done through the robust public engagement process to chart the city’s future called Move Kannapolis Forward.

Move Kannapolis Forward is a community-driven process that will establish the city’s longrange vision, goals and policies for land use, transportation, housing, development, parks and recreation, historic preservation the economy and public services.

With all that is going on in Kannapolis – downtown revitalization, new businesses coming to town, economic development initiatives, new neighborhoods breaking ground, and road improvements improving safety and expanding opportunities for residents in this city and throughout the region – now is a more important time than ever for citizens to make their voices heard about what they love about Kannapolis and what they want it to be.

Members of the community began the process by providing input during the first public meeting of the planning process, the Move Kannapolis Forward Summit, held in April.

Attendees gave us input on what they like most about Kannapolis, what they would most like to see change and how they thought Kannapolis could move forward on its path to becoming a vibrant city. For those who did not have the chance to attend the Move Kannapolis Forward Summit, you can still provide your input and opinions.

A schedule has been mailed to each Kannapolis city home; the schedule is also available at www.kannapolisnc.gov or on Facebook or Twitter.

There will be even more opportunities for public input throughout the process, which will continue into early 2018. Opportunities will include providing feedback at tables located at community events this summer, as well as during presentations to groups and organizations that will take place around Kannapolis.

For all events, children 18 and under must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. No pets or smoking please.

Sunday Jazz Series in May The City is “jazzing” up Sunday afternoons with a new jazz series. From 1-3 p.m., on May 7 and May 14, jazz music will fill the air for everyone to enjoy. Concerts are free and will be in Veterans Park, 118 N. Main Street. Food will be available for purchase on-site. Brad Bailey will perform on May 7 and the John Gurske Trio will perform on May 14.

Brad Bailey performs jazz standards such as What A Wonderful World, Sway, Georgia, Unforgettable and Route 66 in a rhythmic style that creates the sound and energy of a full band. Featured in Charlotte Style Magazine and Bass Player Magazine, Brad is a world premiere eight-string banjo player, combining smooth vocals with bass, banjo and percussive grooves all live on one instrument.

Run Kannapolis and Loop the loop 2017 Run Kannapolis is off to another great start. Both the Spring It On and Rhythm and Run 5Ks each had approximately 300 participants. The Loop the Loop exercise program is also very popular, with almost 400 people signed up since January. There is still time for you to qualify for great prizes and get healthy by participating in one or both of the programs.

Run Kannapolis is a series of 5K walks/ runs held throughout the year in the city.

Loop the Loop is a series of loops around the downtown core that you can walk, bike or run. The loops are ½, 1, 2, 2.5 and 3 miles. Signs and sidewalk markers are conveniently located along the loops to help you navigate.

John Gurske graduated from the University of Wisconsin where he studied jazz history and performance with the Brad Bailey legendary Richard Davis. John created his own Jam Bands program, giving students the vital experience of playing with others in small group settings. He has six jam bands ranging from 5th graders to high John Gurske Trio school seniors. Being a uniquely well-rounded musician, he gives students a solid foundation of musicianship, yet adapts his teaching to various students’ tastes in different musical genres.
