MARCH 2017
March 11 Family Saturday, 2 p.m., circus-themed show, Kannapolis Library
The Parks & Recreation Department is working to expand the greenway system in Kannapolis. Currently, the City has three greenways: 8th Street, Bakers Creek and a ½-mile segment on the Rocky River. Phase I of the Irish Buffalo Creek Greenway is expected to begin in 2018. The survey and preliminary design work are completed and right-ofway acquisition will begin this year. This 2.6-mile greenway will run along the sewer easement in the area. City staff will preserve most of the trees along the greenway in order to make the trail as beautiful as possible and to help drainage issues in the area. The Irish Buffalo Creek Greenway will have three public access points: Oakwood Avenue (across from the Lantern Green and Stonewyck neighborhoods); Vietnam Veterans Park; and Rogers Lake Road. The next phase of the Rocky River Greenway will start in late 2018 with design and construction. This one-mile segment will be very scenic and include a portion that will run along the river. It will be the connector greenway between Mecklenburg County and Concord greenways. Public access and parking is located on Shiloh Church Road for Phase I, which is already opened, and this will remain as the main public access for Phase II. Both the Irish Buffalo Creek and Rocky River Greenways will have 10-foot-wide paved trails. The 8th Street Greenway connects Loop Road to West A Street. Once the Greenway crosses West A Street, it ties into Bakers Creek Park Greenway. Bakers Creek Greenway runs through Baker’s Creek Park and connects to Village Park.

In Case of Emergency, There’s Black Board Connect
I
n the case of emergency situations such as fires, police events, road closures and water main breaks, Blackboard Connect is the communication system the City uses to notify residents and businesses. That’s why Kannapolis residents are encouraged to sign up. It’s easy, there is no charge and, by signing up, you will ensure you will be made aware of emergency situations. You will also have the peace of mind of knowing your information will not be given or sold to any third parties. Blackboard Connect works as a kind of reverse 911 communications system. In the event of an emergency or pertinent event, residents are notified by phone, text or email. The City will use your most current information to contact you. Residents can enter as many phone numbers and email addresses as they wish. Continued on page 2
