The Rufty-Holmes Senior Center is sponsoring the 2017 Summer Fan Program for Seniors. The center has received funding from the Duke Energy Foundation to buy fans for senior adults who may have health risks associated with the intense heat of summer.

Hot weather is not just uncomfortable. As we age, our bodies lose some ability to adapt to heat. Some medications can add to the problem. Hot summertime weather may worsen many pre-existing medical conditions, such as asthma and COPD. To qualify for a free fan you must be: • At least 60 years of age, or disabled • A resident of Rowan County The program is intended for clients who don’t have air-conditioning, and need financial assistance. Eligible senior adults may call to reserve a fan and pick it up at the RuftyHolmes Senior Center. The information needed is the name, address, phone number, age and date of birth for the person receiving the fan.

Stormwater Tips Stormwater is the leading cause of water pollution in the United States, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency. How can you help? Dispose of chemicals, trash, recycling and pet waste properly to keep our water clean. Do not allow these items to enter the storm drains on your streets.

Dirty water from washing or rinsing items around your house and yard is a common source of stormwater pollution.

• Dispose of dirty water in a sink where the water will go to a sewage treatment plant.

• If rinsing or washing your tools or equipment inside isn’t possible, do it on your lawn where the water will soak in and not enter a storm drain.

hroughout the year there are various projects aimed at improving our beautiful city.

Many organizations work on building or improving homes, planting trees, collecting litter, etc. There is still much to do.

We have code enforcement staff who also work to further improve the aesthetics of our city by enforcing City ordinances meant to keep our community safe, healthy and clean.

Some residents see code enforcement in a negative light. However, code enforcement is really about taking pride in our community and committing ourselves to beautifying, preserving and improving our quality of life here in Kannapolis.

The following are just a few of the ordinances that help preserve property values, help us recruit businesses and jobs to our city, and ensure safety for residents.

• Placing indoor furniture on your porch or lawn is strictly against code. If this is observed on your property by code enforcement officials, you may face penalties.

Children raced zucchinis in the Kids Zone at the Jiggy with the Piggy Festival. Competitors worked diligently and used their imaginations to create the fastest and most nutritious cars with the supplies of vegetables provided to them.

Jiggy with the Piggy Zucchini 600 Winners Announced

Jiggy with the Piggy 5K a Huge Success With 368 walkers/runners, the Jiggy with the Piggy 5K was a huge success. We loved seeing all of the participants in the Jiggiest Costume Contest. We hope everyone had a great time and will continue to participate in the rest of this year’s Run Kannapolis Series.

The overall male winner of the 5K was Christopher Capps of Charlotte and the overall female winner was Nicole Morgan of Charlotte. This is the third year in a row Nicole has won overall Jiggy Honors!

Lillian Helton of Kannapolis won the Jiggiest Costume Contest and received a prize package from Smithfield, the presenting sponsor of the Jiggy with the Piggy Festival.

Practice Fireworks Safety This Summer Summertime is here and 4th of July celebrations are just around the corner.

As you plan your holiday activities, Kannapolis Fire Department encourages you to have fun and be safe. Many people like to celebrate with fireworks.

Did you know that sparklers burn at approximately 1,200˚F? Did you also know that clothing ignites at approximately 900˚F? Sparklers, fountains and novelty fireworks items that do not explode or have a report, are not intended to spin, do not leave the ground and do not fly through the air are permissible in North Carolina.

Examples of legal fireworks are snake and glow worms; smoke devices that produce white or colored smoke; trick noisemakers, including party poppers, string poppers and snappers; and wire sparklers. You may purchase these items in North Carolina only if you are 16 years of age or older.

Please remember, when using any of these devices, follow all necessary safety precautions. Misuse of fireworks – regardless of age – can lead to serious injury, death or property loss. More than 10,000 people are hurt annually due to fireworks. If you use any of these devices, keep a hose or bucket of water nearby.

Be aware of your surroundings and do not light items near anything that is flammable. Remember, grass, trees and buildings can easily catch on fire if you are not careful.

Annual Police Department Service Awards The Kannapolis Police Department recently held their annual service awards ceremony; Officer Trey Hinton was presented with the Roger Dale Carter Memorial Service Award and Deena Chavis received the Norma C. Howard Memorial Award.

Roger Dale Carter is the only Kannapolis police officer to be killed in the line of duty. Officer Carter was shot by an assailant as he responded to a 911 call in 1993. Annually, this award is given Deena Chavis and Trey Hinton in his memory and presented to the police officer that possesses an exceptional reputation for personal honesty and integrity that is beyond reproach. The recipients of this award conduct their personal and professional lives in a manner that is consistent with the law enforcement code of ethics and the core values of the department, which are Excellence, Pride, Integrity and Stewardship.

The Norma C. Howard Memorial Service Award is presented annually to a civilian police department employee that possesses a reputation for individual integrity and honor. The recipients of this award conduct their personal and professional lives in a manner that is obviously consistent with the code of ethics and the core values of the agency.
