The Winecoff Fire Station: 1956

A HISTORICAL TIMELINE 1906: J.W. Cannon builds his first textile mill. Kannapolis is established. 1916: Cannon Mills purchased a firefighting hose reel for use in the growing village. The crew is made up of volunteers. 1923: KFD reformed after being inactive since 1918 due to WWI. 1933: “Towel City” firemen set two world records that still stand today. 1934: The department receives the first motorized pumper capable of pumping 300 gallons per minute. 1934: Cannon Mills provides a lean-to adjoining the garage facility at Plant 1. 1942: KFD receives a new Mack pumper capable of pumping 500 gallons per minute, later nicknamed “The Mack.” 1951: An additional new pumper was purchased and added to the growing fleet.

n 1916, 10 years after Kannapolis had been established by J.W. Cannon, the mill purchased its first fire hose and firefighting equipment.

The entire fire department consisted of volunteers from the mill and community. At the time, there were four hydrants placed around the city and, in the event of a fire, the firefighters would attach the 600-foot hose to the closest one and run the reel to the scene of a fire. However, due to the U.S. entering World War I, the department disbanded in 1918. It would be five years before it was reformed. Over the next decade, Kannapolis Fire (KFD) gained a reputation throughout the state for having some of the most athletic firefighters around. Due to the stamina needed to simply carry and operate the hose reel, the job was not one for the weak. As a result, the Kannapolis team regularly set records at the annual State Fireman’s Association meetings in reel race competitions, among others. In 1933, the “Towel City” firemen, as they had come to be known, set two world records that still stand to this day. Only a year later, KFD began to see big advancements in both equipment and facilities. It received its first motorized apparatus in the form of a pumper that was capable of pumping 300 gallons of water per minute. In that same year, Cannon Mills provided an adjoining facility to the garage at Plant 1 and a paid driver. It wasn’t long before the department had its first real fire house. In the early 1940s, the country was deeply entrenched in World War II and the mill was dedicated to providing for that effort. At the same time, KFD received a new Mack pumper, which could pump 500 gallons of water per minute. It would come to be known as “The Mack.” By the early ‘50s, “The Mack” was just the first of several pumpers purchased, and the fleet was growing.
