The City of Kannapolis invites everyone – especially neighborhood associations, community groups and homeowner associations – to celebrate National Night Out.

JULY 7 Movies in the Park: SING (PG)

8:45 p.m. | Village Park

Come out to Veterans Park, 119 N. Main Street, from 6 to 8 p.m., on Tuesday, August 1. We will celebrate with food, children’s games, and opportunities to interact with our police and fire department staff and other community partners.

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes true sense of community and provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.

The goal of National Night Out is to have a police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safe and caring places to live.

Toast of Kannapolis The City of Kannapolis, along with the Friends of Downtown, will host this popular local wine and craft beer tasting event from 2 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 19, in the Laureate Center at Kannapolis City Hall.

A variety of local vineyards/wineries will be sharing a selection of their wines and local breweries will be in attendance as well.

Tickets will be for sale in advance and at the door – $25 per person. Get your tickets before July 19 and take advantage of special pricing of $20 per ticket. For ticket purchase, please visit www.kannapolisnc.gov or call 704-920-4343.

Admission includes a souvenir wine glass or stein, hors d’oeuvres, music, door prizes, and local sundries and crafts for purchase. You must be 21 and present identification to enter.

annapolis City Council has approved the Fiscal Year 2018 budget, which totals $68,125,000 and includes all seven operating funds of the City. The budget includes no property tax increase.

The current tax rate will remain at .63 cents per $100 valuation – a home valued at $150,000 will pay $945 annually in property taxes for all City services.

The budget calls for an increase in water/sewer rates and stormwater fees of a combined increase of $4.45 monthly. These increases have been planned for years to accommodate the downtown infrastructure project and water and sewer expansion in the western part of the city.

The City’s budget is composed of two primary revenue sources: property taxes and sales taxes. The City’s population is expected to be 47,000 by the end of this year – an 11% increase since 2010. This population growth, largely the result of new residential development, equates to an increase of $829,700 in property tax revenues in the FY 2018 Continued on page 2

After researching the matter, the City has determined it can provide the service more efficiently and effectively in-house at the same cost or less than the previously contracted amount.

The budget also includes funding for: • Street paving • Sidewalk repairs • Street maintenance/equipment • Snowplow/salt spreader and brine sprayer • Ballfield and soccer field renovations • Ten replacement police vehicles • Investments in information technology and information technology security systems • Staff merit increases.

Double Decker Carousel and Water Feature Open at Village Park

The City is in the process of replacing and adding new signage that welcomes and directs people to key locations in Kannapolis.

The double decker carousel at Village Park is now open. This unique park feature is the only double decker carousel in North Carolina.

Existing signage was aging and in poor condition.

Additionally, existing signage used different shapes, colors and language, which was confusing. The new comprehensive wayfinding signage is designed to be easily recognizable and located in heavily trafficked routes that visitors travel.

The City’s wayfinding signage will also coordinate with the County’s new wayfinding system.

Water Saving Tips

• Don’t let the faucet run while you clean vegetables. Rinse them in a filled sink or pan.

• When washing dishes by hand, fill one sink with wash water and the other with rinse water.

A 1989 Bertazzon Carousel, it was manufactured in Italy and has 1,800 lights, Brazilian oak decking and charming handpainted Venetian murals. The distinctive carousel horses rotate to carnival music.

Carousels first originated at fairs in Europe in the 17th century, mimicking the tradition of knights on horses as they jousted in tournaments of skill and athleticism. The ride accommodates approximately 60 people and is handicap

accessible. The carousel is housed in a beautiful structure to protect it from the weather.

Nearby, you can now also enjoy the newlyinstalled soothing water feature. Using rocks, grasses and other natural elements, the waterfall feature is a great place to visit to relax and enjoy the park.

The carousel and water feature will be two new favorite places you’ll want to visit regularly in Kannapolis.

The carousel will have the same hours as the Splash Pad and Rotary Train Express: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 12 noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Each ride is $1.50. Village Park is located at 700 West C Street.
