Clinic for Volunteer Coaches Scheduled POLICE OFFER Kannapolis Parks & Recreation is hosting Fraud/Scam Workshop a volunteer coaches’ training clinic on March 4 for prospective, new or experienced coaches. The clinic will be held at Kannapolis City Hall, 401 Laureate Way, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and is offered through the National Youth Sports Coaches Association.

The City of Kannapolis Police Department is hosting a workshop for seniors on how to recognize scam and fraud attempts. The workshop will focus on how to recognize and deal with the people who are working to scam you out of your money and resources.

Criminals love to target senior citizens in person, via email and by phone. Learn how to not be a victim.

Streetscape & Infrastructure A major component of the Kannapolis Downtown Revitalization Plan is the infrastructure and streetscape improvements planned for West Avenue and the surrounding streets.

City Council has approved a serpentine streetscape design that is unique, has green space, outdoor dining and social hubs, maintains traffic flow with two roundabounts and parking options, encourages pedestrian activity, provides interaction between businesses downtown and preserves the historic core of the city.

This program is designed for girls ages five and up to be accompanied by their dad, stepdad, grandpa, big brother, uncle or other special guy. Dressy to casual attire.

Downtown Revitalization Project: Moving Forward

The streetscape is estimated to cost $5 million and the infrastructure is estimated to cost $15 million. Work is sceduled to begin summer of 2017.

Sports & Entertainment Venue City Council has hired architects Populous and Creech and Associates, Inc. to design the downtown sports and entertainment venue that will be home to the Kannapolis Intimidators.

Parks & Recreation Programs for 2017 Bike Racks Installed at Train Station

The City Council also approved a preliminary schematic, which focuses on the orientation of the field, the architecture of a baseball stadium, dining options, seating, technology, event space, and children’s spaces that create more entertainment and social experiences. A preliminary estimate for the facility is $37 million with the City partnering with the Kannapolis Intimidators and other entities to cover the costs.

The venue will be constructed at the former K-Town Furniture site located at Oak and West Avenues. It is expected to host baseball games, concerts, festivals and other events.

The current stadium is more than 20 years old and is in need of major renovations. The new facility should be open for the start of the 2019 baseball season.

Populous has a portfolio of work that includes designing 48 minor league ballparks across the U.S., and major league baseball parks for the Atlanta Braves and the Miami Marlins.

Demonstration Project The City Council and Lansing Melbourne Group (LMG) are working to complete an agreement that will bring apartments, retail, restaurant space and a parking deck on West Avenue. LMG intends to purchase four acres and invest $60.6 million to develop the project.

Third Dimension Brewery The City Council has approved a lease for Third Dimension Brewery, to be located at 100 West Avenue. It is a beer production facility and tap room that will produce more than 200 barrels a month. The brewery is projected to open in late 2017.

The City and the North Carolina Rail Division have teamed up to place secured bike racks at the train station in Downtown Kannapolis. The public is welcome to use the racks to store their bicycles while they are traveling on the Amtrak train. The project is not only practical but artistic, as the bike racks were designed to look like the North Carolinian train that stops at the Kannapolis station.

“We love how the bike racks turned out. Hilbish Ford helped us paint them professionally so they are eye catching and a beautiful addition to the Amtrak station and our downtown,” said Irene Sacks, director of economic and community development.

The racks are conveniently located in the parking lot of the train station. Users simply lift the lid, roll the bicycle into the unit and lock the cover with your own U-lock or padlock. Each BikeLid unit holds up to two full-sized bicycles. For added security, bikes can also be locked to BikeLid’s interior steel frame, using a U or cable lock.

Kannapolis Receives Sidewalk Art Grant Volunteers from the City, A.L. Brown High School, Duke University/MURDOCK Study and Cabarrus Health Alliance recently painted the sidewalks along South Ridge Avenue with interactive art exercise stencils. Part of the City’s Discover a Healthy Life initiative, children (and the young at heart) can follow the directions on the sidewalk art and march, tiptoe, step, jump, crab crawl and more.

This art and healthy living initiative is designed to make walking more fun and interactive. It was made possible when the City of Kannapolis received a $10,000 grant from the KaBoom! Foundation, a national non-profit dedicated to bringing balanced and active play into the daily lives of all kids. The City was one of the winners in the Play Everywhere Challenge, a $1-million national competition that awarded innovative ideas to make play easy, available, and fun for kids and families in cities across the U.S. The Challenge is hosted by KaBOOM! Additional art will be added on First Street and East C Street in the near future.

Beginner Belly Dancing Class Participants will learn about proper posture, foundation movements, a simple choreography, and belly dance history and culture. In addition, participants will gain increased self-esteem, a more positive body image, and an appreciation of the strength, flexibility and beauty of their body and its movements. This class is taught by Wendy Konzelmann.

Start Date: January 12 Days: Thursdays Time: 7 p.m.

Cost: $45 per participant for four-week session Fan Fiction Writing Workshop A series of three classes focusing on taking your fan fiction to the next level.

First Session Overview: Tips and tricks on how to create and share your fan fiction. How to be on beta teams, targeting audiences, procuring loyal readers, and earning revenue from advertising and sponsors. Want to turn your fan fiction into an original novel?

We cover that too!

Second Session Overview: Everything a fan needs to know to create a stellar fan production! Audio drama, video or stage productions, this session covers scripting, casting, editing and marketing fan productions of all types.

Fan groups welcome!

Third Session Overview: Take the final step and transition from fan fiction to original work! Everything you need to know about using skills obtained through writing fan fiction to create and publish original work.

The workshop is taught by Lady Soliloque, a novelist, writer, artist, video

and audio editor, actress, event hostess and public speaker.

Session One Date: January 20 Time: 7 p.m.

Cost: $20 per person per evening.

Register for all three sessions and receive a $15 discount! All three sessions must be registered for at the same time.

Scrapbooking Basics This class will provide instruction and direction to enable participants to complete a scrapbook on any subject of their choosing. This class is taught by Kay Patty.

Cost: $25 per person for six classes Crafts For The Home With Jenny Project ideas for each month will include: door wreaths, wooden painted signs, floral arrangements, rustic signs and more. All materials will be included, but participants may bring embellishments as desired to personalize each craft. Classes are taught by Jenny Booe.
