Kannapolis 101 Classes Start September 5 Curious about how your City government works? Want a behind-the-scenes look at everything from the police department to economic development to the wastewater treatment plant? Want to understand how the City budget works? Kannapolis

101 gives residents that behind-thescenes look. This special nine-week program begins September 5. It is held at various city facilities from 6-8 p.m. The program is free and first priority is given to Kannapolis residents.

annapolis residents are discovering healthy lives by taking part in Loop the Loop and the Run Kannapolis Series, which have resulted in empowering stories of family togetherness, community pride, and significant mental and physical health benefits.

Kearsten Kuddie and fam

Kearsten Kuddie decided to participate in the Run Kannapolis Series after she had become an avid runner. In 2010, she decided she wanted to live a healthier lifestyle, but with two children, that became a tough reality because spending money on a babysitter each time she went to the gym was unrealistic for her family. Instead, she decided to download the Couch to 5K app, where she found her love of running and proved to herself that running three miles was not impossible.

For Kuddie, running is therapy. She has enjoyed participating in Loop the Loop because of the smiling faces and friendly hellos. Her children even join in on the action when they are walking or running with her by interacting and encouraging everyone along their Continued on page 2

At Sherrill’s recent doctor’s appointment, she learned that because of her new healthy habits, she has lost more than 70 pounds and no longer has to take medicine to regulate her diabetes.

The First Knight 5K believes in the honor system, so no proof is required for your race completion. However, we encourage you to post pictures, videos, etc., to social media using the hashtag #EAFK to share your experience with other participants who are completing the 5K. The inaugural Fall Back 5K is a new and exciting event that starts and ends on the beautiful N.C. Research Campus. The run will start at 1:50 a.m. on November 5. (The run will take place during the time change, which happens at 2 a.m. For example, if you run a 30 minute 5K, your finish time will be around 1:20 a.m.) We’ll have lots of fun staying awake and falling back in time!

Amy Sherrill was diagnosed with diabetes more than a year ago and as someone who is afraid of needles, she knew it was time for a change and decided that Loop the Loop was the best place for her to start. Before she was diagnosed, she could not walk very far – she would have to stop and rest to make it to the end of her 50foot driveway. Now she walks five miles, participates in the Run Kannapolis Series and is able to play with her dog again.

“I love Loop the Loop because it’s a chance to get out and unwind and clear your body and mind,” Sherrill says.

As someone who struggled with walking

To date, there are 425 Loop the Loop participants who have collectively logged nearly 16,000 miles. Loop the Loop is part of the City’s Discover a Healthy Life initiative and the Cabarrus Health Alliance REACH program.

The goal is to complete 150 miles by the end of 2017. At the end of each quarter, you are eligible to earn prizes. If eligible for prizes, you will receive an email confirming your mileage and how to pick up your prize at City Hall. There is no fee to participate in Loop the Loop. To register and log your miles, go to kannapolisnc. gov/looptheloop.

Runners and walkers of all ages and abilities are invited to participate in Run Kannapolis, a series featuring the best area 5K fun races held in Kannapolis.

N.C. Music Hall of Fame Announces 2017 Inductees October is right around the corner and that means a new class of inductees to the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame, located at 600 Dale Earnhardt Boulevard.

This year’s inductees include Grammy Awardwinning R&B singer, songwriter and record producer, Anthony Hamilton (Charlotte); Bucky Covington (Rockingham), country singer of American Idol fame; and the late Etta Baker (Morganton) who was a renowned blues singer.

In addition, multi-Grammy-winning singer/ songwriter, Jim Lauderdale (Troutman) was also included, as well as Richard Lewis Spencer (Wadesboro), whose incredible musical talent on the saxophone was highlighted with artists like Curtis Mayfield, The Impressions and the Winstons.

The Sensational Nightingales (Durham) are also part of this year’s inductees. Their popularity during the 1950s was unprecedented for a traditional black gospel quartet, and continues to this day as the group continues to tour.

Finally, The Steep Canyon Rangers (Brevard) rounds out the group. This Grammy Awardwinning bluegrass band often appears with comedian and accomplished banjo player, Steve Martin.

The Induction Ceremony takes place on October 19, at the Kannapolis Performing Arts Center at A.L. Brown High School. The red carpet event is open to the public and tickets are on sale now. Kannapolis Fire Truck Parade Returns The Kannapolis Fire Department will host a Fire Truck Parade as part of their Annual Open House on September 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The parade will begin at 11 a.m. The route will be along Laureate Way and N. Research Campus Drive, between City Hall and the North Carolina Research Campus. Indoor festivities will be in The Laureate Center at City Hall.

The free Open House will focus on the theme, Every Second Counts. Information will be available on making sure you have working smoke alarms, plan home evacuations and prevent fires. There will be emergency vehicles, music, entertainment, helicopters, inflatable game, and a Pit Road consisting of community partners with lots of great information.

The Kannapolis Firefighters’ Assistance Foundation (KFAF) will have hamburgers, hotdogs and drinks available for purchase.

In addition, KFAF will host a silent auction and sell T-shirts. Profits will go to assist local firefighters in need.
