Watch Out for School Buses! As the new school year approaches, Kannapolis Police officers would like to remind all motorists to slow down and obey school speed limits in school zones, and comply with state laws related to school bus stops. Please see the diagrams below, provided by the NCDMV that depict when motorists are required to stop for a stopped school bus. With your assistance, we can make this a safe and successful beginning of the school year!

When An Emergency Happens – How Can We Access Your Home?
hen an emergency occurs at your home, Kannapolis Fire needs safe, quick and reliable access. If that access is not available, the fire department resorts to forcing entry by breaking a window or door, which is not always the best option. Kannapolis residents who live alone, or have a history of falls or medical concerns that affect their ability to let emergency personnel into their home, now have an opportunity to participate in the residential Knox Box Loaner Program. A residential Knox Box is an emergency-access key vault that is installed on the entry door of your house. Inside these square security boxes, a key to the property is stored to prevent the need for forced entry. Many homeowners find it convenient to hide a key or give one to a neighbor or friend. While this may work, there is no guarantee the key will be accessible when needed. There are also many safety concerns associated with a “hide-a-key” or leaving a key with another person. For these reasons, Kannapolis Fire recommends the use of a residential Knox Box.
Firefighter Daniel Jen kins installs a residential Knox Bo x.
The residential Knox Box is composed of high-quality materials and is very secure. Through a FEMA grant, Kannapolis Fire has received a supply of boxes to enable qualified applicants to obtain, free of charge, a loaner Knox Box. Applicants who receive the loaner box will get an annual follow-up call to verify contact information, appropriate key, etc. continued on page 3
