Join Run Kannapolis in 2019 Join the thousands of people who have participated in Run Kannapolis. Run Kannapolis is part of the City of Kannapolis’ Discover a Healthy Life brand and cosponsored by Atrium Health. Runners and walkers of all ages and abilities are invited to participate in this unique series featuring the best 5K runs/walks in the city. Each run is held in Downtown Kannapolis and hosted by a nonprofit that benefits from the entry fees.

New City Park Planned

T

he City of Kannapolis Parks and Recreation Department is in the process of planning a new city park.

The eastside park will be in the Lake Fisher/Midlake area of the city, on 33 acres. Preliminary plans for this park call for it to be passive in nature with lakefront walking trails, a playground, a dog park, ropes course, a splash pad and shelters.

There would be no ballfields at this park.

Please join us from 6:30-8 p.m., March 26, at Kannapolis City Hall to give us your input. Drop in and share your ideas for this park during this meeting.

Highlights for this year’s runs include Jiggy with the Piggy. Join us on a Thursday evening, May 2, in your best pig/pork-related costume to qualify for prizes. The Rotary 5K is a virtual run and the Fall Back event is held at 1:50 a.m., the night Daylight Savings Time ends. It allows you to finish before you begin!

Fair Housing Lunch and Learn Event Announced Are you interested in knowing more about the N.C. Fair Housing Act and your rights regarding equal housing opportunities?

A lunch and learn event will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Thursday, April 18, at The Laureate Center, Kannapolis City Hall, 401 Laureate Way. The event is hosted by the City of Kannapolis and Cooperative Christian Ministry. Vendors will share information about housing programs, and you will have the opportunity to listen to a panel discussion after a short video, The House We Live In. Fire Personnel Honored The Kannapolis Fire Department recently held its annual Awards and Appreciation Banquet. More than 200 fire department personnel, family members and special guests attended the event.

The top honors of the night went to Senior Captain Jonathon Jenkins, recipient of the Larry C. Phillips Fire Officer of the Year Award, and Senior Firefighter Kristopher Reeder, recipient of the Danny E. Scott Firefighter of the Year Award.

These awards are presented to personnel who exhibit exemplary leadership skills, commitment to the department and the community, a high degree of motivation, Senior Captain Jonathon Jenkins Senior Firefighter Kristopher Reeder superior supervisory skills and job knowledge, and personal achievements during the year. Honorees are chosen by their peers for the awards.

Captain Jenkins is a 15-year veteran of the fire department. Firefighter Reeder has been with Kannapolis Fire Department for two years.

Spring Openings TRAIN/CAROUSEL OPENING The train and carousel at Village Park will be open weekends only, beginning April 6; the Splash Pad opens May 25.

Hours of operation will be Saturdays from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and Sundays from 12-6 p.m.

All park attractions will be open seven days a week beginning June 1.

OPEN GYM Join us for free Open Gym at Shady Brook Elementary! Those 17 and under – accompanied by an adult – are invited 7-9 p.m. on Tuesdays. Those 18 and older are invited 7-9 p.m. on Thursdays. Call 704-920-4343 for more information.

Garbage Tip Please tie all trash bags before placing them in your garbage bin. This helps prevent trash from being blown out of the trucks and littering the streets.

Fire Chief Ernie Hiers stated, “It is always a thrill to recognize exemplary service, and both these employees deserve the honor this year.”

Farmers Market Seeks Vendors for Summer 2019 The Kannapolis Farmers Market is looking for vendors. If you are a farmer, crafter or baker, we would love for you to participate in the market.

The market is looking for people who offer a wide variety of fresh, local produce as well as cheese, ice cream, honey, baked goods, spices, jewelry, soaps, candies, crafts and more. Vendors pay an annual membership fee of $30, and a weekly rental fee of $10 per 14-foot space.

The market is open May through September and operates every Thursday from 4-7 p.m. at the corner of Vance Avenue and Dale Earnhardt Boulevard.

New Officers Join Kannapolis Police Department Five new officers have joined the Kannapolis Police Department. The officers have completed their basic law enforcement training at Rowan Cabarrus Community College and are now starting their field training. As part of their field training, each officer is assigned to two experienced Kannapolis police officers in the Patrol Division for the next five months.

In addition to the departmental awards, Kannapolis Fire Department Explorer Post 1 recognized several individuals for their achievements during the past year.

Adam Black received the Explorer Officer of the Year Award. Madison Desrosiers received the Explorer of the Year Award. Jun Fung Ng received the Bradley E. Jordan Outstanding Service Award.

Jiggy with the Piggy Volunteers Needed!

Come be a part of the Jiggy with the Piggy Festival on May 2-4 in Kannapolis! We need volunteers to help with the BBQ competition, 5k walk/run, arts & crafts vendors, concerts, family movie and more!

The festival needs more than 200 people for it to run smoothly and you can be a part of the excitement.

Partners in the weekend events include: City of Kannapolis, Smithfield, Kannapolis Rotary, Kannapolis YMCA and the 600 Festival Committee. Sign up today at kannapolisnc.gov/Community/Jiggy-With-the-Piggy.
